I wanted Estranged by Guns N Roses (for Rock with 3 movements) but I think there's really only 2 movements and I can't find a 3rd in it.

Anyone want to give it a listen and check my work?

I am having a hell of a time with this one. My untrained ear can't seem to tell the difference from a separate movement/theme and an extended guitar solo.

That's my problem with Estranged.

The piano in the middle of the song is clearly a new movement, but then it's tough to tell if the guitar solo afterwards is part of the song or it's own venture within the tune.

I'll find something eventually but this was one of my favorites.

7.03 - Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfwVfEXJhQQ

Maybe I just don't get the deeper level of these lyrics, but some of the most ridiculous lyrics in one of the better songs of it's time.

Well billy rapped all night about his suicide
How he kick it in the head when he was twenty-five
Speed jive don't want to stay alive
When you're twenty-five
And wendy's stealing clothes from marks and sparks
And freedy's got spots from ripping off the stars from his face
Funky little boat race
Television man is crazy saying we're juvenile deliquent wrecks
Oh man I need tv when I got t rex
Oh brother you guessed
I'm a dude dad
All the young dudes (hey dudes)
Carry the news (where are ya)
Boogaloo dudes (stand up come on)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (I want to hear you)
Carry the news (I want to see you)
Boogaloo dudes (and I want to talk to you all of you)
Carry the news

Now lucy looks sweet cause he dresses like a queen
But he can kick like a mule it's a real mean team
But we can love oh yes we can love
And my brother's back at home with his beatles and his stones
We never got it off on that revolution stuff
What a drag too many snags
Now I've drunk a lot of wine and I'm feeling fine
Got to race some cat to bed
Oh is there concrete all around
Or is it in my head
Yeah
I'm a dude dad
All the young dudes (hey dudes)
Carry the news (where are ya)
Boogaloo dudes (stand up)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (I want to hear ya)
Carry the news (I want to see you)
Boogaloo dudes (and I want to relate to you)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (what dudes)

Carry the news (let's hear the news come on)
Boogaloo dudes (I want to kick you)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (hey you there with the glasses)
Carry the news (I want you)
Boogaloo dudes (I want you at the front)
Carry the news (now you all his friends)
All the young dudes (now you bring him down cause I want him)
Carry the news
Boogaloo dudes (I want him right here bring him come on)
Carry the news (bring him here you go)
All the young dudes (I've wanted to do this for years)
Carry the news (there you go)
Boogaloo dudes (how do you feel)

7.8 Magic Johnson (Red Hot Chili Peppers) - Songs that mention an Athlete

lyrics:

L.A. Lakers, fast break makers
Kinds of the court shake and bake all takers
Back to back is a bad ### fact a claim that remains in tact

M A G I C see you on the court
Buck has come to play his way and his way is to thwart
M A G I C, magic of the buck
Other teams pray for dreams but he don't give a ####

Penetrating the lane like a bullet train
Comes the magic blood a telepathic brain
Knucklehead suckers better duck
When the buck comes through like a truck

Scott stops, pops and drops it in
On his way back gets a little skin
From the hand of a man named A.C. Green
Slam so hard break your TV screen

Worthy's hot with his tomahawk
Take it to the hole make your mamma talk
I hate to burst your bubble but triple double trouble
Is coming to your town and he's going to make rubble

L.A. Lakers, fast break makers
Kings of the court, shake and bake all takers
Back to back is a bad ### fact a claim that remains in tact

Lakers are the team that I watch on the telly
'Cause they got more moves that a bowl full of jelly
The buck stops here, pops then cheers
A roar through the forum that deafens my ears

The one and only know if his kind sits in a throne
Not for the records that he holds but for being bald and bold
Kareem Abdul Jabbar all time great super super star
I hate to burst your bubble but triple double trouble

7.2 Hallelu - The Devil Makes Three (Religious/by Non-religious artists)

Nothing is wrong here so I'm climbing up the walls
Trying to kill this silence with gun blasts and alcohol
I've been laughing, I've been crying, I've been living, I've been dying
They say tell the truth, they're lying, Hallelu

Chorus:
Hallelu, Hallelu, praise the lord and pass the ammunition too
They say Jesus is coming, he must be walking, he sure ain't running
Who can blame him, look how we done him, Hallelu

What will it take to have this place on bended knee
You run to the forest, you can bet I'll burn the trees
I will poison the water 'cause it's only getting hotter
And we came for sons and daughters
Hallelu

Chorus

Trials and tribulations, that's just bread and wine
Getting my hands dirty, that does not take off the shine
On this farm to get your filling, there's got to be a little killing
So I am ready and I'm willing, Hallelu

Chorus

If you're waiting on salvation you'll need candles and libations
Train ain't coming in the station, Hallelu

They say Jesus is coming, he must be walking, he sure ain't running
Who can blame him, look how we done him, Hallelu

Checking it out now

EDIT: Takes about 4 minutes to get into the second movement (piano solo). The first movement is then reprised a few times, so "Estranged" is OK for the category.

Just noticed that in the OP, Bender's picks in the 3rd & 4th rounds are the same song ("Red Hill Mining Town"). Can't check the GoogleDoc from work.

Round 7 Lick The Tins "Can't Help Falling In Love With You" (80's movie soundtrack)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4rqsmtwiaM

From the end of the film, "Some Kind of Wonderful"
That song makes me angry.
Yeah, Stoltz totally should have tapped Lea Thompson rather than the butch.
Could've been a threesome and that song still would have gotten my blood up.

This, coming from the guy who put a bunch of gypsie kids howling up there...

6.19 - Rush - Working Man

The middle of the song features an extensive instrumental jam with two guitar solos by Alex Lifeson, and freestyle bass playing by Geddy Lee. It was voted 94th in Guitar World magazine's list of the 100 greatest guitar solos.

Rush released this on their own label, Moon Records. A DJ named Donna Halper at WMMS in Cleveland, Ohio listened to the song and put it on the air. Immediately, the radio station received calls from people asking when the new Led Zeppelin album was coming out. Listeners thought Rush sounded very similar to Led Zeppelin and that Geddy Lee was like a Robert Plant clone. The album gained more and more popularity in Cleveland from the airplay, and Donna Halper sent for more copies of the album so she could give them to record stores. These copies were quickly sold, and someone from Mercury Records heard the album on WMMS and liked it. Mercury signed the band re-released the album. With the backing of a major label, Rush became very popular in the US and Canada.

The song features the band's original drummer and co-founder, John Rutsey, who was replaced by Neil Peart. This is probably why I like the song so much - no Ayn Rand-inspired bull#### lyrics, just straight ahead rock n roll.

I'm not really doing much research (Wu Tang Clan will be the exception), just going with what I think of for each cat. But I did stumble across this song when listening to RHCP for the draft. I had forgotten about it.

Agreed - but great band and great tune.

Make-up picks:

3.19: "Walk Away", James Gang (1971)

Love Joe Walsh's solo jamming on this tune, especially wah-wah work throughout the coda.

4.04: "Cliffs of Dover", Eric Johnson (1990-2014 instrumentals)

A huge part of the early-90s resurgence of Texas boogie guitar. Johnson had been playing this live for years before running it through an Echoplex during the sesssions for Ah Via Musicom, thus creating what may be one of the very last classic-rock staples.

Make-up picks:

5.19: "Unbelievable", EMF (Scream)

For this category, it will probably be unusual that the scream is, in fact, intentionally subtle on the recording. EMF sampled Andrew Dice Clay screamng "OOOOOH ... what the f### WAAAS THAT?!?" from one of his stand-up performances. The sample is broken into three pieces and played in the background during the choruses (and a few other times, too)..

6.04: "The Ballad of Serenity", Sonny Rhodes (Bluish Grass)

This is not a centerline pick, but hopefully it's close enough to count. No mandolin, but plenty of lap steel and fiddle. Not only did Joss Whedon (naturally) script Firefly's episodes, he also wrote this tune for teh theme.

This pick is partially schtick but it fits in my mix:

7.xx "Timothy" The Buoys - (1971)

It's a peppy, AM radio single about cannibalism written by Rupert Holmes, who later hit it big with "The Pina Colada Song"

At the time, I was working on an arrangement of '16 Tons,' the Tennessee Ernie Ford hit from the '50s, for an artist named Andy Kim. While I was working on the arrangement, there was a cooking show on the TV in the kitchen. It was called The Galloping Gourmet with Graham Kerr. It's on in the background and I'm singing the lyrics to '16 Tons,' playing it to a kind of vamp sort of like 'Proud Mary,' and I sing 'Some people say a man is made out of mud, a coal man's made out of muscle and blood. Muscle and blood and skin and bones, a mind that's weak and a back that's...' and I think, you know, that almost sounds like a recipe - muscle and blood and skin and bones, bake in a moderate oven for 2 hours, top with Miracle Whip. I had seen the movie Suddenly Last Summer about a week earlier on TV, and it had a revelation about cannibalism in it, and I thought, If it's good enough for Tennessee Williams, it's good enough for The Buoys. So I thought, Cannibalism during a mining disaster, that'll get banned. It's not like I'm really telling people to go out and eat someone, this is just this dark, horrible thing that happened in this story. So I write this lyric: 'Timothy, Timothy, where on Earth did you go?' It's about three boys who are trapped in a mine with water but no food for maybe a week. When they're pulled free, they don't remember what happened, but they know they're not hungry. One of them is missing, and that's Timothy. We record this on the weekend and I don't think about it again.

When this was released, some little radio stations played it and kids would hear it and figure out what it was about. They would call and request the song, and the radio stations, surprised by the phone response, would then listen to the song to find out what it was about. Says Holmes: "They played the song originally because it had a nice rhythm, kind of like a Creedence Clearwater Revival feel. It was catchy enough, but then they'd hear what the song was about and say 'We can't be playing this, it's about cannibalism!' and they'd pull the song off the air. The kids would call in and say 'Why'd you pull the song off the air,' and they'd say, 'Because it's disgusting, you shouldn't be listening to stuff like that.' Well, all you have to do is tell a teenage kid that he shouldn't be listening to something because it's disgusting and vile and loathsome, and he'll demand it. So the record, unlike "Pina Colada," which vaulted up the charts, went up like one or two digits every week. It was on the charts forever. Stations were playing it, kids were clamoring for it, it would move up the charts, then the station would pull it, the kids would clamor more and some other station would go on it to satisfy that demand. It just kept going up the charts.

Scepter Records in the beginning did not even know it was on their label. The promotion men for Scepter Records, who were trying to break a Beverly Bremers single, would say, 'We couldn't get it on that station, they went with this stupid song called Timothy.' Finally, someone said, 'You idiot, it's on our label.' Now they have a problem, because now they're getting up towards the top 20, and they know there are some big stations that are simply not going to play this record. WABC-AM, the biggest station at the time, they never played it. Scepter Records started a rumor that Timothy was a mule to try to get the taint of cannibalism out of the picture and try to make it a Top-10 record. Someone called me and said, 'Was Timothy a mule? You wrote it.' And I said 'No, what can I tell you, they ate him.' It did better than we intended it to do. It was supposed to just start the controversy, instead it actually was a hit. I was a 20 year old kid hungry not for human flesh, but hungry to do something successful in the music business. I think I diagnosed a dilemma that a friend of mine had and found an effective way of solving his problem.
