\\m// Official Dealer's Choice Music Mixtape Draft (4 Viewers)

8.xx "Is This Music?" Teenage Fanclub (instrumental)

The rock part made this a tougher category for me than I thought it would be.
Are you doing a rock theme?
I thought the category was rock instrumental
No. Higgins asked about it, and TK said:

Jazz instrumentals are definitely fine. Was initially thinking basically anything where they just play instruments, but if people wanna draft computer/electronic music that's cool too.
Thanks for the clarification. You'd think I'd know these things.

I'm happy with the way the Fannies track fits my mix but the search would have been shorter if I could have thrown some Arvo Part in.

7.12 Get What's Coming - Rival Sons (Multiple Movements) - bonus live-ish version

How much do I  this band? Impossible to quantify. GB them for bringing rock back. They're the love child of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, with a little funk/soul thrown in.

I really wanted to go with Pressure and Time from them here, as it's my favorite song of theirs, but I think it's just an A-B-A kind of structure. Get What's Coming has at least an A, B and C. And it's not an insufferable progressive 8+ minute monster. I actually listen to this.

Anyway, enjoy rocking out.

BTW, I hate the bumper songs being 7 million times louder than the actual track. It's like late night t.v. commercials all over again.

8.12 You Don't Have To Cry - Crosby, Stills & Nash (Folk, Bluegrass)

It's straight folk, I hope it's o.k. for the category. Not a big country/bluegrass fan so I don't have much in this area to post that isn't mainly folk.

Such great vocals.

Probably cheating, as I am not sure that it has to be an 80s song from an an 80s movie, but I wouldn't be honest with myself if I didn't get something from my favorite 80s movie:

7.xx: Johnny B. Goode (pivotal song from an 80s movie)

If it is not cool I will pick one of my many other much cheesier selections later.

I THINK this one will fly for the 3 act structure song, but if not I guess I will toss it into the animal category:

8.xx: Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three Different Ones) (3+movement song)

That one is a FBG special. There have been several bands/albums that I have gotten out of all these drafts that we have been doing. Don't think any have been as big as that album. Really didn't listen to much Floyd, or if I did it was more just the 'popular' songs. Now I would say that I have listened to that album more than any other over the last 5 or 6 years.

I will also be tossing out my Nirvana pick for the #1 album. Evidently I didn't do enough research and found a lot more albums that I could mine for better options in that category.

Instead I will take my selection for the scream category. Just about #### myself the first time I put this one in, and it still makes me jump sometimes:

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Skunk (scream)

I contemplated it for religious/non and animal, but I already took PF and wanted to pretend to keep my honor. Then I had to listen to the entire album and realized it's a strong contender for greatest personal influence. Pigs was surely a snipe if I was to be dishonorable, which is pretty much a given in this format. Dogs and Sheep don't do it for me for a draft. There's equally strong contenders.

Story. I was the doubles partner in high school to our leagues singles champion. So we were pretty dominant as long as I stayed out of the way. He listened to Animals almost every day, sometimes a few times a day, for months and months. He talked about it enough to get a little disturbing. But I was into to it too. HS doubles can be a semi-violent form of tennis. A dominant team tends to get a ton of overhead smashes. Well over half of my partners smashes started with him saying "haha!" then smashing the ball, and of course, "charaude you are". He was an original trash talker. I added the 'u' to emphasize his proper english. :)

I owe three. I look at the categories and my half folk half prog mix and get draftaphobia. I

Very cool story.

Pigs was definitely in consideration for me, but that and the rest of the album were too obvious to use in the Animals category.

9. Charlene- I've Never Been to Me (Bad lyrics in a song that I love)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhQWND9jKDA

Hey lady, you, lady, cursin' at your life
You're a discontented mother and a regimented wife
I've no doubt you dream about the things you never do
But I wish someone had a talk to me like I wanna talk to you

Ooh I've been to Georgia and California, and, anywhere I could run
Took the hand of a preacherman and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free

I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me

Please lady, please, lady, don't just walk away
'Cause I have this need to tell you why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of a weary heart that has lived a million lies

Oh I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece
Where I sipped champagne on a yacht
I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed 'em what I've got
I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things
That a woman ain't s'posed to see

I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me

Spoken: Hey, you know what paradise is? It's a lie
A fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be
But you know what truth is?
It's that little baby you're holding, and it's that man you fought with this morning
The same one you're going to make love with tonight. That's truth, that's love

Sometimes I've been to cryin' for unborn children
That might have made me complete
But I, I took the sweet life and never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that cost too much to be free

Hey lady, I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me

I've been to paradise - never been to me
(I've been to Georgia and California, and anywhere I could run)
I've been to paradise - never been to me
(I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece
While I sipped champagne on a yacht)
I've been to paradise - never been to me
(I've been to cryin' for unborn children )
(Fade)

Now THESE are bad lyrics. Lines like "Crying for unborn children" and "I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring" are just classically awful. But I love this song. It may end up being one of my mulligans because it's not 100% acoustic. It starts out with a piano but you can hear electronics pretty quickly. But I'll keep it for now.

Pro-Tip: Do not listen/watch this right before you go to bed. I had a "furry" dream with a lot of screaming.
The whole album is peeled eyes. It's just...probably one of the best punk albums I've ever heard. Still love the title of the album. Ballsy, and I didn't know it until recently, but a riff on Ornette Coleman.

Okay, I have break drafter's block by going in a different direction...

From the boozy celtic punk phase. My favorite song about an athlete.

Athlete

7.xx The Hitchers - Strachan

She waited for the match to start
to start a fight up with me.
She said, “What’s that you’re watching?”,
“It’s a programme about art”.
She said, “A programme about art?”, I said
“A programme about art” and then the greatest
midfield artist of them all walked out onto the park.
The crowd were on their feet and they whistled and
they cheered for the tiny wee Scotsman
with the copper coloured hair.
She said, “You just don’t care, You never listen you know…”
Lukic out to Wetherall and Wetherall to Dorigo.
Dorigo knocks it on to Fairclough, Fairclough looks for Speed.
Now she’s ranting like a lunatic, “I’m switching off that telly”.
“Look at me while I’m talking to you!”
To Strachan now, puts Kelly through
There’s one man pulling all the strings and twenty-two
know damn well who.
The air begins to thicken. Inside the box Strachan has stricken
The gap unfilled -he makes the kill -One-Nil!
She waited for the match to start
to start a fight up with me.
She said, “what’s that you’re watching?”,
“It’s a programme about art”.
She said, “A programme about art?”, I said
“A programme about art” and then the artist
tackles perfectly and floats over the park
to the waiting Rodney Wallace who knocks
it back in to Deane and now the Deane Machine
to McAllister and McAllister’s just seen
that Gordon Strachan slipped his marker
and he’s free now in space
he’s got ‘em pouring forward spraying the ball
all over the place.
Now Gary Speed is involved again, he steadies the ball.
“Am I talking to myself?”, she says, “or talking to the wall?”
“Will you look at me while I’m talking to you!”
To Strachan now, puts Fairclough through
There’s one man pulling all the strings and twenty-two
know damn well who.
The air gets even thicker.
The ‘keepers quick – Gordon Strachan’s quicker.
The gap unfilled, he makes the kill -Two-Nil!
She waited for the match to start
to start a fight up with me.
She said, “what’s that you’re watching?”,
“It’s a programme about art”.
“If you don’t take your grief and bad vibes and get out of my face
I’m gonna sit right here and whistle my way through Melrose Place”
You could’ve lit the air in the room with a matchstick,
McAllister’s cross sets up Strachan’s hat-trick
The gap unfilled, Strachan’s skill – Three-Nil!

Awful Lyrics (but I love the song/video anyway)

Let's translate some of this.

Bubbles and water
Legs up for hours
My goldfish is under me...

I'm fed up with loneliness
With my uncle overstressed...

Fed up with the rain, the plane...
That makes me throw up again.
I'm fed up with all cynics
Bathing caps and all critics
I'm fed up with being fed up! Poor me!
8.xx Alizee -- J'en Ai Marre

And now for something completely differente

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Tamacun (instrumental)

http://bit.ly/1chgBCh
They're good.
Yah, big fan. Flamenco meets heavy metal acoustically. I've used them before in a draft. If you can find Rodrigo playing plugged in, it's excellent.
 Rodrigo y Gabriela rock.
Interestingly they got their start by moving to Dublin and gathering a following there.

Have people been throwing picks back? Not taking category mulligans, but making a pick and then deciding on something better later?

My favorite artist, and one I long ago gave up proseltyzing about after putting him on mixed-tape after mixed-tape for friends and loved-ones and having them universely disinterested; at this point, you either know him and love him, or don't. I'm assuming most of you don't and won't.

Every one of his songs is heartbreaking... even the happy ones. Pretty sure every song is in the key of D minor, the saddest key of all [/Tap].

(eta2: This isn't one of my favorites of his musically... but dammit, it's the saddest thing I've ever heard).

wrist-slitting time...

9.4- Damage- David Sylvian (Sad) (eta: with Robert Fripp)

wrist-slitting time...

I found the way
By the sound of your voice
So many things to say
But these are only words
Now I've only words
Once there was a choice

Did I give you much?
Well, you gave me things
You gave me stars to hold
Songs to sing

I only want to be loved

And I hurt and I hurt
And the damage is done
You gave me songs to sing
Shadow and sun
Earthbound, starblind
Tied to someone

Why didn't I stay?
Why couldn't I?
So many lives to cross
Well I just had to leave
There goes everything,
Everything

Can I meet you there?
God knows the place
And I'll touch your hand
Kiss your face

We only want to be loved
We only want to be loved

I only want to be loved
And I hurt and I hurt
And the damage is done
You gave me songs to sing
Shadow and sun
Earthbound, starblind
Tied to someone

I'm throwing back The Glamorous Life.. I didn't know we could just pick straight Prince covers. I will make a new pick shortly.

No you're not the first.. that is fine, my mistake

I'm probably going to pass on that category and take more Ben Folds because that's what we need! He must have a dozen or so goofball songs that qualify for this category, but this one is the first and probably best.

Ben Folds Five - Eddie Walker (name in title)

Yeah, the Prince category isn't my category. But I didn't read it as encompassing covers like the Robyn cover. Of course, I understand that was probably the only option that JML had considering his all-Scandinavian theme.

Keys is defensible. She's not a protege, per se, because she was famous before doing much with Prince, but she did induct him into the Rock and Roll HOF (and Prince played the introduction at his shows). I think they've at least appeared at shows together.

I'm just serving prior notice that the first guy to pick Foo Fighters' Darlin' Nikki cover will get booed lustily.

Nice, they played this "rare" one during their tour after reuniting. Saw them at the Ryman.

Songs from acts in the Prince/Minneapolis lineage, or produced by Prince, without Prince being the featured vocalist
I think we're doing this wrong. Shakira lists Prince as a primary influence but that's not the lineage. Posting the Alizee made me think of Shakira and I put it up. I'm throwing it back for something directly in the lineage.

Yeah, with the Prince thing I wasn't really thinking straight cover songs. But if that's what you want to go with, it's o.k.
