Buffett enunciates better than CSN. Only when I heard his version of Southern Cross did I realize it was "why twice you ran away" instead of "why, Christ, you ran away".
Yeah, I might be busy and stuff. So we'll see you in krista's covers countdown in a few months...Not sure when/where the covers talk started. It's not that I never like them, it's just odds are if I know the song elsewhere, I won't like it as much. Just a factor of how well known and liked by me the song is that's being covered.Wait you don’t like covers? I chose one with you in mind. Lol.Some of my biggest surprises of the 31s for a variety of reasons were:
I Got Loaded - before this song, I could have named you exactly 1 Los Lobos song.
Southern Cross - see above. No little Buffett, but asumed it was stuff I wouldn't dig.
Suffering Jukebox - 0 knowledge of this artist, but was expecting folk.
Dare Me - just know the hits. That be some funky *** bass, mama.
Little Darling - I took exactly 1 song for zamboni to surprise me with a Lizzy song I haven't gotten to yet.
Head Rolls Off - another I think I have heard peripherally, but could tell you a thing about them.
Overall, great start to the list. I didn't skip anything, but y'all are already pushing it with the covers.
My 2 biggestare:
Black Midi - I was liking it, but I also have the impression that this one could be the Bauhaus of Part 2 in that it also scared me at night.
The Jam - again, I liked it but I also got a whiff of bands that I normally don't click with. You got me with Chicago, so until proven otherwise - in Pip I trust.![]()
Some I do flat out hate and try to avoid - perfect example is Johnny Cash's version of Hurt.
That being said I am a stupid ****ing idiot who has no clue what they're talking about lmao

To be honest, I would have fun researching and finding covers I really like, but the listening to the rest will probably give me fits.
I still like Ozzie, so yeah. And Tchaikovsky is my favorite classical composer, so rock on.That being said I am a stupid ****ing idiot who has no clue what they're talking about lmao
If someone talked to you the way you just talked about yourself . . . sheesh. I know it's self-effacing and a way of saying "I'm no expert," but stick with us here. Unless you've bitten the head off a bat, we'll stick with you. And even then we might.
If you want the very best recording quality, you want Telarc. For 1812, they used real cannons in a large, walled square so they could record the sound bouncing off the walls and church bells so that it would sound as close as they could get it to the original performance. It's like you are there in the concert hall with the orchestra/musicians/chorus.Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Пётр Ильи́ч Чайко́вский)
I listened to the entirety of this playlist, and several 100s of songs in that playlist several times with several different recordings over years and years and played some of the final 31 ranked playlist in an orchestra. I spent 3-4 weeks 3-4 hours a day on average since learning about the thread to make the final 31. I ended up with 56 pieces on my playlist that I thought were top 31 worthy, though I believe there is a noticeable quality gap between 1-20 and the rest.
I attempted to homogenize recording quality by mostly selecting recordings from the last 20 years and from the Mariinsky Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, and the Borodin Quartet. Soviet-era recordings were largely discarded because the audio quality just wasn't very good. Due to my intense hatred of opera, most of it had to be left out, though there was some I did enjoy and include. The ranking of 31 inadvertently ended up containing what I thought was a good mix of traditionally popular pieces and more relatively unknown works.

There are warnings about the sound levels on some tracks. Heed them carefully.
Ebay has this one available among many others. Don't let the recording year scare you. Telarc was special.

I'm sorry, I prefer my cannons to be at an acceptable audio level
Had a chance to listen to this. I definitely don't know enough Rainbow as I should beyond that album and some of their other more well known songs. Interesting song here - Dio & Co. do the classical thing with violas, cellos, flutes.

I think True Stories is the only Heads album I never listened to. Liked this song a lot - guess I missed out on it by assuming that album wouldn’t be any good for whatever reason.Talking Heads
#31 Radio Head
First of 2 songs from 1986's True Stories. From Songfacts:
So, you know, bona fides as an influence on other bands.
- The band Radiohead took their name from this song. Originally, they were known as On A Friday.
Baby your mind is a radio
Got a receiver inside my head
Baby I'm tuned to your wavelength
Lemme tell you what it says:
Transmitter!
Oh! Picking up something good
Hey, radio head!
The sound, of a brand-new world.
Cornell is one of my fav vocalists too and I never heard it before researching my list. It was originally only on the soundtrack for the movie Machine Gun Preacher. This version is the only studio track on his live album Songbook.Favorite known to me songs:
Guided By Wire--I think there will be many of these for me
Never Gonna Change
Fame
Head Rolls Off---I know there will be many of these for me since I almost picked this artist for this round, but @sneveneleven loves them a bit more than I. Although, I already had a top 31 list ready to go and this song was not on it. Still love it.
Crash Years - a Neko double shot
Favorite new to me songs:
Absolute Beginners
Good Year
The Keeper - his voice is one of my favorites. Surprised I hadn't heard this one.
This - I love a few CS songs but had never heard this one. Like it a lot.
Are you doing strictly solo Cornell or including Soundgarden? I can’t remember what you said.Cornell is one of my fav vocalists too and I never heard it before researching my list. I intended this one to go at the end…lol…very atypical to anything they ever did…a nice melding of classical and blues influences in a rare ballad.Had a chance to listen to this. I definitely don't know enough Rainbow as I should beyond that album and some of their other more well known songs. Interesting song here - Dio & Co. do the classical thing with violas, cellos, flutes.

Between this song and her own song on the list, I feel like I've really missed out on something and so excited for the other 60 songs coming up = I realize not all NP songs will be hers.Neko Case
I would say taking a brief look, she probably takes the lead on somewhere around 25% of their songs over the discography. She'll probably crack 50% on this list though.Between this song and her own song on the list, I feel like I've really missed out on something and so excited for the other 60 songs coming up = I realize not all NP songs will be hers.Neko Case
Not even in the bottom half.
I have great news for you. I don't know which songs @The Dreaded Marco selected, but it's a lock that the best is yet to come (and Suffering Jukebox has already set the bar high).Unknown Unknowns (songs I don't recognize from artists for whom I have little or no knowledge/experience)

Yes the link is always at the top of the reveal post each round.I shot the lock off my wallet and signed up for Spotify premium so that I could join the nerd herd. Well, first 30 days are free so that's nice. Still won't give up my YouTube Music w/ premium add-on because I could never go back to ad-supported YouTube. Trying to immerse myself in the picks without the benefit of a playlist (a playlist without ads, I mean) was kind of a drag last thread.
There are playlists, right?

Yeah, his solo stuff is surprisingly weak in my opinion. Vocals are still usually still top notch but it's mostly just him and an acoustic guitar doing laid back stuff singer/songwriter style stuff .Everything except Soundgarden so solo, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog will be represented. Are you doing strictly solo Cornell or including Soundgarden? For my taste based on the music I have experienced: Audioslave > Temple of the Dog > Soundgarden > Cornell solo. Very much looking forward to this list!
