Before I get wound up, I want to make clear that going into this, I accept that getting the masses to listen to bluegrass is an uphill battle and that it's not going to be for everyone, maybe not anyone here, and I'm OK with that.
That said, there is just so much I want to unpack that it will have to happen outside of the song reveals as well.
Not sure where everyone stands regarding their knowledge of bluegrass, so I hope to at least give some context and tell a small part of its complex history.
Finally, what makes this band so dear to me is that they represent one of the most significant connections I have to my father; this is his favorite band, and we have seen them together, as well as other heavy hitters in the genre, more times than I have seen any other live act, combined. I've seen them as a kid, as a teenager, as a young adult and finally as a husband and father/peer to my father. As a result, even though this isn't my favorite band, I still have a lot say/share about them.

In honor of next month's Farm Aid... my round 2 selection will be one of its cofounders... John Mellencamp. Growing up in the midwest in the 80s ol' Johnny Cougar was our guy. Not sure my writeups will do him justice, but I was able to catch him in concert this past year, and for a man in his 70s he's still got it... Get ready for some Heartland Rock!

I suspect your top 31 Jam would look a lot different from mine, but we'll see.
will be watching this one closely, and i friggin' whiffed on not getting them, or the Modfather, in undah the wire.
Weller solo and The Style Council are still available, though the latter doesn't have a ton of top material to choose from, IMO.
I could have taken the entirety of Weller's career, but he has a boatload of solo work and I haven't really kept up with it since 2008. And, even though their lifespan was short, The Jam's material is so strong, and they were so prolific when they were active, that it's going to be hard to narrow down a top 31 from just that.

My playlist of “favorites” of Nina Simone has around 70 songs, and keeps increasing as I keep diving/rediscovering. Narrowing down to 31 will be more difficult for Nina Simone than Jorge Ben Jor was. I think I could do 31 of her original songs, and 31 covers (most of the covers, which she completely reinvents into her own). Will try to include a balance as her career spans multiple genres (soul, jazz, folk, gospel, blues, R&B, you name it) and experiences (some lighter, playful tunes; some more intense tunes reflective of the civil rights struggles or her personal life; and some with a mix of sounding playful but with intense lyrics). I just ordered her autobiography and will try to include some commentary based on that.

i don't wanna play "spoiler" here, but i've made my feelings known over the years on what i consider to be overblown/rated songs of theirs ... the list ain't long by any stretch, but i cringe when i see them gushed over.
no "wrong" selections, tho ... just a coupla/few i will always pass on - more interested in whut makes the top 5, because these are some very deep cuts ripe for the pickin'

Drive-By Truckers this round for me. I’m a little nervous about the issues I’m sure some will have with one of the band’s three lead vocalists and heck some may also have issues with the more country leanings of one of the other songwriters/singers - but will discuss more on that when I do my initial band introduction.

Those that had trouble getting past the vocal with Modest Mouse are probably going to really have issues with my choice this round. David Berman's voice in the Silver Jews and Purple Mountains wouldn't be considered standardly good, but I love it and it fits his lyrics perfectly.

I’m not sure if it was you but some one took a Purple Mountains song in a past draft that I fell in love with and couldn’t stop listening to despite some amazingly depressing lyrics. I did dive a little deeper after that and enjoyed but really looking forward to your list to get back into him.

It's fascinating that there's a crew of bands that seem to run in the same circles but don't sound much alike. Craig is super open about his love for DBT in the new book and I always see a ton of Truckers' shirts at THS shows but other than their relationships with overly committed fanbases, there's not a ton in common.
Likewise, the other tees I always see are Mountain Goats, Menzingers, Gaslight Anthem (ok, they sound like THS), and Against Me! When I saw THS in London in March, we pregamed at a pub with several huge Against Me! fans. I guess the crossover is more about vibe and energy than genre.

I had Against Me!/Laura Jane Grace, Jason Isbell (solo instead of DBT), and John Prine on my short list...so now I'm down to a comedy band, an Irishman, or a favorite from my college years.
