This is the 4th song I have included in my top 31 from Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory album, their 1st studio album. The song peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot Rock and Alternative Songs chart. It won the 2002 Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance.

The song that first drew me to listen to Linkin Park is my #1 in this countdown, but this song was the one that really clinched for me how much I liked their music. Up to that point, I had not really heard any music like Linkin Park, and I loved it.

Chester said this about the song:

"Crawling has caused me the most trouble live more than any other song. Just because it’s that one long note the whole time... There are definitely moments on every record where at the end I go "why... did I... do that?", you know? Crawling was that one for me on Hybrid Theory."

"Crawling is a really like... a really emotional song, it's got a lot of deep lyrics. It's kind of like admitting something that you don't really like to admit, which is, you know, having a problem with yourself. You know what I mean? And sometimes you have to like learn how to deal with living inside your own skin and being the person that you are. And that's not something to be ashamed of or anything like that. It's just something that isn't always peachy. You know what I mean? You're not always gonna be exactly the person that you wanna be or the person that you thought you were. You know? You gotta live with yourself for the rest of your life."

"It's easy to fall into that thing — 'poor, poor me', that's where songs like 'Crawling' come from: I can't take myself. But that song is about taking responsibility for your actions. I don't say 'you' at any point. It's about how I'm the reason that I feel this way. There's something inside me that pulls me down."

Brad Delson said this about Chester's vocals on the song:

"What happened when Chester joined the group, we moved from 'Hey, these are the kind of singing parts we want,' to 'Wow, these are singing parts that we never even thought of,' because his range and versatility are such that, like 'Crawling,' who would think to write that melody? You couldn't because there are very few people in the world that could probably sing that. So that's an example of when I say he really expanded our writing ability in the sense that he has such a range vocally. He really was kind of the final piece of the puzzle, and he brings vocal talent that, when we were looking for a second vocalist, we didn't see anything close to his talent in anybody else."

In 2020, Metal Hammer ranked the top 25 Linkin Park songs of all time and ranked Crawling at #3. Here is an excerpt from their writeup on the song:

The second single to be released from Hybrid Theory, Crawling won Linkin Park a Grammy in 2002 in the Best Hard Rock Performance category. Rolling Stone describe the anthem as “claustrophobic” and “burbling”, listing it as one of Linkin Park’s most essential songs.

Live, Crawling has featured guest appearances from the likes of Aaron Lewis, Chris Cornell and Fred Durst. The video, starring model Katelyn Rosaasen, centred on a young girl seemingly suffering abuse, and was filmed in Los Angeles. Katelyn, who had also appeared in videos by The Offspring and N*Sync amongst others, claimed it was her favourite starring role in any music video.

The video, which stars the band performing in a spooky house, has notched up over 100 million views on YouTube, and the track itself has currently claimed a cool 89 million streams on Spotify.

In 2021, Kerrang ranked the top 20 Linkin Park songs of all time and ranked Crawling at #7. Here is their writeup on the song from that ranking:

‘There’s something inside me that pulls beneath the surface / Consuming, confusing…’ The second single from Hybrid Theory felt like the first really deep dive into the damage underlying the songwriting. A reckoning on guilt and self-loathing, it sees Chester attempting to come to terms with the demons of his past: namely a teenage abuse of methamphetamine, with its tendency to conjure hallucinations, anxiety and the unsettling sensation of something moving beneath his skin. Although the singer would note in later years that the song remained difficult to perform live, the anthemic quality – and lyrics left open enough to carry fans’ projections of their more everyday angst – ensured it became a favourite and 2002 winner of the Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy.

In 2023, Loudwire ranked all of the Linkin Park singles to that point and ranked Crawling at #5. Here is their writeup on the song from that ranking:

Chester Bennington does the heavy lifting here, showing vulnerability in the verses as he shares his own internal struggle of feeling a loss of control over his substance abuse. That vulnerability gives way to extreme angst in the chorus as he belts, “Crawling in my skin / These wounds they will not heal.”

The song was the second single from the band’s breakout Hybrid Theory album and would earn them their first Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.

The band remixed the Hybrid Theory version of this song for their remix album Reanimation. That version of the song is here, and features Aaron Lewis (Staind). This is one of their best remixes IMO, love it.

This is my #1 for Prince. I'm happy it ranked this high, but I ain't gonna lie, a little disappointed as well that it wasn't your top song.
(For some reason this version (from The Hits/The B-Sides) doesn't sound as clean as the one on the remastered version 2020 Sign O' The Times.)

It's the answer I usually give when someone asks me my favorite Prince song. Who wants to be the guy who picks the chalk? But in doing this, I was swayed by two things. One, I do really wish Prince had ditched the extended outro to I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man. Because I think it's a bit incongruous in an otherwise perfect pop song. Second? Well, the chalk is pretty ****ing great.

My opinions are constantly changing with Prince. I'm not sure that if I did the list anew today that Erotic City and 1999 would have been left off as they were on this list. But that's the way the list shook out when I was making it, what, two months ago?

I have a few "rough drafts" set up. I'd be up for another - with a break in between. I do love this but the playlists start dominating your music listening and I feel like I'm neglecting the music I already love. It also doesn't help that it's starting to become Winter around here, so my dog walks are far shorter, and that's some prime listening time for me. I'm not complaining about the pace - it's been fine - but each list being 3-4 hours in length and three lists a week, that's a lot of listening time devoted to this.

This is probably more accurate. And I am mostly putting some playlists together because as you said later in the post, sometimes I feel the MAD31 listening takes away a little time from your person loves. Most of the playlists I've been doing are just going through bands I love and doing playlists like that I should have done before, and 30-40 makes a good length for getting a variety in a playlist so I just stick with that.

In true music nerd fashion, my next MAD31 was going to be from an "unknown" artist. But, when I was looking at the artist I was going to do they had a shocking (to me) 22M listens/month. Which got me on a huge rabbit hole for a few days obsessing about listens/month and seeing what bands had what numbers. Right, @Ilov80s ? It's very interesting and surprising. After all that, I decided that going forward all of my MAD31 playlist will have no more listens/month than Mastodon, which is 1.1M. Dino Jr had about 660K. Fittingly, the 3 playlists that I had the most ready were eliminated, so those are just hanging in limbo. I have a list of 30 artists that I loved for the project, and again stuff I haven't listened to for awhile or already are very "KP" artists. I have 3 more frontrunners, so we will see. . One I had never of or heard a song from before about last Thurs.

2. Going Underground

Released as a single? Yes (UK #1; double A-side with The Dreams of Children)

I go back and forth between this and #1 on this list for my favorite song by The Jam. So that's why I selected Going Underground in the This Is Their Best Song draft. It punches, it rocks, it's danceable and it's got a killer melody. The way the momentum builds throughout the course of the song is masterful, and the crescendo of guitar glory at the end is extremely satisfying. It's triumphant a song as The Eton Rifles but even better constructed.

Unbelievably, The Jam's most powerful post-punk rager and the heavy lifter behind its first UK #1 single was supposed to be a B-side. The more experimental The Dreams of Children (which reflected the psychedelia The Jam would display on Sound Affects, released a few months later) was planned as the A-side, but the pressing plant screwed up and listed both songs as the A side. That proved to be a gift to radio programmers, who took to Going Underground immediately -- said melody being a big part of it, as well as its sonic resemblance to their previous smash hit, The Eton Rifles -- and drove the single to #1 in its first week of release. That Polydor (and perhaps the band itself) sees Going Underground as the true A-side is reflected in the inclusion of The Dreams of Children on the Extras compilation, which was otherwise reserved for B-sides and outtakes.

Bruce Foxton recalled that they were on tour in the US, where they were underappreciated, when they got word of their first UK #1: "The record company called us up and told us we’d gone in at Number One. We said, ‘Well, what are we doing here then?’ We jumped on the plane and went home to where people did want to hear us. We flew back on Concorde and recorded Top of the Pops."

What may also have helped its appeal is that Going Underground is Paul Weller's most impassioned criticism of Margaret Thatcher's Tory government and its supporters.

In its list of Paul Weller's 30 best songs, the Guardian ranked Going Underground #2. Just like me! They wrote:

Weller at his most brilliantly contrary: horrified by Thatcherism, he writes a song claiming he doesn’t get what “the public want” and has no interest in the mainstream, then sets it to his most potent and irresistible melody yet, full of explosive twists and turns. It enters the charts at No 1.

The Jam saved their best R&B/soul/funk cover for the end. The swirling, slinky slice of funk from Curtis Mayfield's 1970 breakout album Curtis is right at home in the hands of Weller and co, as Foxton propels the song with both groove and grit, the arrangement makes great use of horns and piano, and Weller proffers one of his best soulful vocals, again not trying to imitate the original, which would have been futile. The song was released as one of three covers on the expanded edition of the band's final single, Beat Surrender, but occupied a prominent space throughout 1982 in their live shows, as evidenced by the 1982 disc of Fire and Skill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YINulrul24

After I got home today, I just had to go to the new IN N OUT in Meridian, next to Boise. It's the 400th In and Out, and it set a record Tuesday with 9100 hamburgers sold Day 1. Took me 90 minutes to get through today. Just had to have it. LOL. And I got the call that the sale of old home and buying of new home recorded and funded two seconds after I reached the pick up window. So another great day, as I finally get to start the next chapter. LOL.


As far as Round 3, yes for sure. I sense a little music burn out during this round from many of you, so I'd like there to be a break. Also want to make sure if @krista4 does the cover thingy, that this does not over lap with that, so I'll wait for her direction on it. I look forward to it!!
