MAD's ROUND 2!! # 1's have been posted!! (9 Viewers)

Got Sia down to 31 songs. I'm doing this semi-chronologically in that everything is chronological for the most part by album/year, but I'm reserving my number 1 ranked song for the number 1 playlist. For the breakdown:

- 4 songs from her collaboration with a certain British downtempo/electronica/triphop duo.
- 4 covers
- 9 original songs from her pre-2010 jazzy/rock-ish sounding work
- 10 original songs from her post-2010 electro-pop work
- 4 songs Sia wrote for other Artists

I chose to do this chronologically because the tone, lyrics, and emotions present in her songs really change over the years as she was going through some heavy personal **** throughout her career. The chronological format really helps make these transitions come through.

Some of you will be happy to know that I did NOT end up selecting anything from her Christmas album.

Once again, I'm going to prove I'm the only true dummy in this endeavor, as my list once again falls short of 31, clocking in at 27 Seldom Scene songs, listed in chronological order.

For you cover song snobs, be warned: 24 of the 27 songs on my list are covers. Such is bluegrass.

In addition, you will also receive a brief history of bluegrass music itself, as well as a quick prehistory of the band and 9 'bonus' tracks sprinkled throughout to add flavor and texture.

There are a handful of artists/bands that I hold above others, and many I prefer to listen to over this one, yet I cherish none of them as much as I do The Seldom Scene.

Hmm, time to talk about our artists more?? ;)
At this point, I’m listening to my playlist, flipping a song out of my 31 with another one. Listen again 30 minutes later and reverse my earlier switch. Rinse/repeat.
Been there with both playlists. This one was easier, but harder. With 11 songs locked in, I had less decisions, but I seemed to obsess about a couple songs more because I was making an attempt at a flowing playlist. I will be running when the spreadsheet is available - I was having "those" thoughts this morning listening to the playlist yet again and debating a song or two in my head.

In the end, I decided: 1. not many know them, so it probably matters less what I pick to the group. 2. that's what bonus tracks on the playlist after we are done are for.

Who? I want names! What kind of soulless freak doesn't love Christmas music?? ;)

Christmas Eve and Day for me only please.

That is where I am, I can enjoy some while we are making cookies, opening presents, eating. But the barrage of music I get at work and just out and about that is now starting pre-Thanksgiving? Hard pass, and it makes me even enjoy the little bit with the family less.

I have Royksopp down to a top 75.
There will be some brutal cuts as i feel there are about 42 songs worth listing

They released 3 albums in the last 2 years with great stuff on it. This after an 8 year break
If i stop this list at 2015, I have a top 31 pretty much spot on.

Back when I had a family it was extended to putting up the Christmas tree and decorating with it on and maybe two weeks before. Now I really only listen to it on the way to Brooklyn to pick up my Aunt on the way to my Sister’s on Christmas Day, but I’d be ok with it on Eve if it was on somewhere.

Also it’s strictly a playlist I create - I much prefer the Christian songs by the old crooners like Sinatra, Martin, Crosby, Mathis and Cole, even though I’m not very religious at all.

And this one of course.

The Pointer Sisters have one Christmas song. I guess we need a playlist at Christmas featuring only songs by our artists.
I hereby decree all Christmas songs be placed on list #25.

Unless our next run goes through Christmas and we can project what round that lands closest.

I don’t hate or love Christmas music, but I do love the memories associated with it, so I don’t mind when it starts playing in November.

Will the final exam be essay or multiple choice?
Oral exam. We are to compose and perform our own bluegrass tune.
Then you have already failed; bluegrass artists don't write original tunes.
Yeah, I shouldn't have used that word. I couldn't think of how to say it - find a song to cover in a bluegrass fashion and perform it?

The countdown will start Sunday, October 1. I will start with all the #31's on Oct 1, and then count down the next lists each Tuesday night, Thursday night, and Sunday mornings.

By my count, this will conclude sometime in early December. Perfect timing for a bonus Xmas round.

Since not every artist will have a Xmas song, I'd propose bending the rules to give everyone a chance to get into the holiday spirit.

Two bonus rounds
  1. Holiday themed song by your MAD artist if available
  2. Any holiday-themed song
I think it'll be nice to have a couple of collaborative Xmas playlist. I mean what could possibly go wrong
Royksopp have a few christmas songs
Tears for Fears, I dont think so. I might get surprised

I wanted to do the same as the bolded as well, but I had too many "less rowdy" songs towards the top. I started moving them around I just settled on accepting the fact that the are in the order of which I like them.

I was going to wait until we started submitting lists, but like a Kid at Christmas I can't wait any more. This song did not make my top 30 because it is not one of his better pieces of work, but it is still a fun song that I am sure beings this a MAD countdown, most of us can relate to. Definitely NSFW (you have been warned!)

Will most lists be a countdown from least favorite of the 31 to all-time favorite? I ask because I assume my artist is unknown to most of you and I have been thinking it might make sense to be careful which songs I pick as an introduction.

It's a scattershot of styles, so do what you want to present to the group. Last time it seemed many did more of a top 26 with 5 songs being a "intro" of sorts. Some were straight ranking, some chronological, whatever. It's all good.

This was partially what I did in round 1 along with trying to create some semblance of a flow to my final playlist. It did not go over very well. Most participants don't remember your plan and wonder why their favorite song is ranked at 26 rather than at 2. And even if most of us don't know the artist well, it seems like people like to know what you think is their best song vs. their 31st best song, and everything in between in some kind order. And finally, most participants are not going to listen to your final playlist in order at the end of the thread so establishing a flow isn't all that important. That's my $0.02 based on my experience in round 1.

I'd recommend you list them from your 31st favorite to your #1 favorite. That's what I'm going to do from now on in these threads.

 So true. Probably best to do an non-ranked submission on a lesser known band.

Yeah similar.
In round 1 and what i will do in round 2 is have a well known cover or well known song first up.
Then i sort of will establish the boundaries of extremes in the next few songs before knuckling down to an actual order at about 28-26
