MAD's ROUND 2!! # 1's have been posted!! (1 Viewer)

Some of my biggest surprises of the 31s for a variety of reasons were:

I Got Loaded - before this song, I could have named you exactly 1 Los Lobos song.
Southern Cross - see above. No little Buffett, but asumed it was stuff I wouldn't dig.
Suffering Jukebox - 0 knowledge of this artist, but was expecting folk.
Dare Me - just know the hits. That be some funky *** bass, mama.
Little Darling - I took exactly 1 song for zamboni to surprise me with a Lizzy song I haven't gotten to yet.
Head Rolls Off - another I think I have heard peripherally, but could tell you a thing about them.

Overall, great start to the list. I didn't skip anything, but y'all are already pushing it with the covers. ;)

My 2 biggest :oldunsure: are:
Black Midi - I was liking it, but I also have the impression that this one could be the Bauhaus of Part 2 in that it also scared me at night.
The Jam - again, I liked it but I also got a whiff of bands that I normally don't click with. You got me with Chicago, so until proven otherwise - in Pip I trust. ;)
Wait you don’t like covers? I chose one with you in mind. Lol.
Not sure when/where the covers talk started. It's not that I never like them, it's just odds are if I know the song elsewhere, I won't like it as much. Just a factor of how well known and liked by me the song is that's being covered.

Some I do flat out hate and try to avoid - perfect example is Johnny Cash's version of Hurt.
So we'll see you in krista's covers countdown in a few months...
Yeah, I might be busy and stuff.

To be honest, I would have fun researching and finding covers I really like, but the listening to the rest will probably give me fits.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Пётр Ильи́ч Чайко́вский)

I listened to the entirety of this playlist, and several 100s of songs in that playlist several times with several different recordings over years and years and played some of the final 31 ranked playlist in an orchestra. I spent 3-4 weeks 3-4 hours a day on average since learning about the thread to make the final 31. I ended up with 56 pieces on my playlist that I thought were top 31 worthy, though I believe there is a noticeable quality gap between 1-20 and the rest.

I attempted to homogenize recording quality by mostly selecting recordings from the last 20 years and from the Mariinsky Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, and the Borodin Quartet. Soviet-era recordings were largely discarded because the audio quality just wasn't very good. Due to my intense hatred of opera, most of it had to be left out, though there was some I did enjoy and include. The ranking of 31 inadvertently ended up containing what I thought was a good mix of traditionally popular pieces and more relatively unknown works.

That being said I am a stupid ****ing idiot who has no clue what they're talking about lmao

If someone talked to you the way you just talked about yourself . . . sheesh. I know it's self-effacing and a way of saying "I'm no expert," but stick with us here. Unless you've bitten the head off a bat, we'll stick with you. And even then we might.

I still like Ozzie, so yeah. And Tchaikovsky is my favorite classical composer, so rock on.

If you want the very best recording quality, you want Telarc. For 1812, they used real cannons in a large, walled square so they could record the sound bouncing off the walls and church bells so that it would sound as close as they could get it to the original performance. It's like you are there in the concert hall with the orchestra/musicians/chorus.

There are warnings about the sound levels on some tracks. Heed them carefully.

Ebay has this one available among many others. Don't let the recording year scare you. Telarc was special.

I'm sorry, I prefer my cannons to be at an acceptable audio level

And they are. That isn't one of the tracks with a warning.

I didn’t realize until after I posted my list that one of my mid ranked songs was a cover :bag: I would change it but I must have not had bookmarked correctly. Oh well, still a good song even if I wouldn’t have included it. I don’t think I ever heard the original. It’s one of the most recent songs on my list.

Talking Heads
#31 Radio Head

First of 2 songs from 1986's True Stories. From Songfacts:
  • The band Radiohead took their name from this song. Originally, they were known as On A Friday.
So, you know, bona fides as an influence on other bands.

Baby your mind is a radio
Got a receiver inside my head
Baby I'm tuned to your wavelength
Lemme tell you what it says:

Transmitter!
Oh! Picking up something good
Hey, radio head!
The sound, of a brand-new world.
I think True Stories is the only Heads album I never listened to. Liked this song a lot - guess I missed out on it by assuming that album wouldn’t be any good for whatever reason.

On 2nd spin, I'm gonna add that Los Lobos track to my new favorites. Must've been distracted the first time through!

Also, somehow skipped over The Refreshments 'Good Year' on my known favorites. Derp. I'm expecting a lot of new hearts to be dolled out to this group as we work our way through this.

Favorite known to me songs:

Guided By Wire--I think there will be many of these for me
Never Gonna Change
Fame
Head Rolls Off---I know there will be many of these for me since I almost picked this artist for this round, but @sneveneleven loves them a bit more than I. Although, I already had a top 31 list ready to go and this song was not on it. Still love it.
Crash Years - a Neko double shot

Favorite new to me songs:

Absolute Beginners
Good Year
The Keeper - his voice is one of my favorites. Surprised I hadn't heard this one.
This - I love a few CS songs but had never heard this one. Like it a lot.
Cornell is one of my fav vocalists too and I never heard it before researching my list. It was originally only on the soundtrack for the movie Machine Gun Preacher. This version is the only studio track on his live album Songbook.

Are you doing strictly solo Cornell or including Soundgarden? I can’t remember what you said.

Excellent cheerful start to his mix with the opening three tracks then just kept on going. Not sure how these categories are gonna work out so may need to refine:

Known knowns (songs I know from artists I at least know reasonably well)

Gold - Dare by the Pointer Sisters - made me want to strap on my roller skates.
Silver - Star by Belly - I own this CD but haven't listened in forever. Star was like an upbeat Cocteau Twins where you could actually understand the words.
Bronze - Radio Head by Talking Heads - big fan of TH but lean to the more accessible stuff like this one.

Unknown Knowns (songs I don't recognize from artists I at least know reasonably well)

Gold - Your Funeral My Trial by Nick Cave
Silver - Guided by Wire by Neko Case
Bronze - Destiny by Sia/Zero 7 - know Sia's stuff a bit and I somehow own this Zero 7 CD but I don't ever remember listening to it. Definitely gave off a Morcheeba vibe.

Unknown Unknowns (songs I don't recognize from artists for whom I have little or no knowledge/experience)

Gold - Suffering Jukebox by Silver Jews
Silver - Heads Roll Off by Frightened Rabbit
Bronze - Good Year by The Refreshments - recognized the voice from their one popular song but never heard this one and couldn't remember the name of the band anyway. Liked it a lot.

RainbowSam QuentinRainbow Eyes
Had a chance to listen to this. I definitely don't know enough Rainbow as I should beyond that album and some of their other more well known songs. Interesting song here - Dio & Co. do the classical thing with violas, cellos, flutes.
I intended this one to go at the end…lol…very atypical to anything they ever did…a nice melding of classical and blues influences in a rare ballad.

Round 31 Thoughts

New to me favorites:

Sia - mentioned before, but I loved this song. I’ve already listened to it 3 more times.

Mastodon - I like metal, I like progressive rock, no idea why I never listened to Mastodon. Looking forward to this playlist.

Black midi - I initially thought this was an early Incubus song. I’m definitely intrigued and liked this song. A bit chaotic at times, but who am I kidding with some of the proggy stuff I listen to.

Lots of other new stuff I liked - Belly, Drive by Truckers, The Jam, Royksopp, Refreshments, Nathaniel Rateliff, Collective Soul, New Pornographers

Known to me favorites:
Prince, CSN, Bowie, Pointer Sisters, Incubus, Mike Shinoda, Tchaikovsky

Everything except Soundgarden so solo, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog will be represented.

I'm going to try to be better about writing up my songs this time:

#31 - THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS - CRASH YEARS

From 2010's Together, which was an album where IMO, the band was kind of in flux. Their first three releases were all full speed ahead power pop and the album that preceded this went into a slower, more orchestral direction that didn't quite get the same love/reception as the first three (not from me though, that album will be HEAVILY represented on this list)... Anyway, Together kind of splits the difference, it's definitely not all power pop bangers but they dial back the baroque a bit. They may have been a bit caught in the middle.

This song though, it all works perfectly, the low-end cello and occasional chonky guitars are the perfect backdrop for Neko Case's high voice to come over the top of. Huge chorus, even bigger whistle bridge, speed it all up just a little bit the second time and we're off to the races for a classic New Pornographers banger.

I have no idea if I will be able to keep these totals up (save me wikipedia) but I'll give it a shot

The New Pornographers Top 31 by the Numbers

Albums Represented:

Together (2010) - 1

Song Writers:

Carl Newman - 1 (he is going to absolutely dominate this, but whatever)

Lead Singers:

Neko Case - 1

Between this song and her own song on the list, I feel like I've really missed out on something and so excited for the other 60 songs coming up = I realize not all NP songs will be hers.
I would say taking a brief look, she probably takes the lead on somewhere around 25% of their songs over the discography. She'll probably crack 50% on this list though.

My favourite new to me were:

Good Year - The Refreshments
I Got Loaded - Los Lobos
Summer's End - John Prine
Dare Me - Pointer Sisters
Sultan's Curse - Mastodon

I am familiar with all the above artists but have never done a deep dive so looking forward to it.

Favourite known songs:

Head Rolls Off - The Frightened Rabbit song will probably be my favourite on every playlist every time. "Head Rolls Off" is the first song I ever heard by them and would easily be inside my top 10.
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Fight For Your Right
Reinventing Axl Rose
Suffering Jukebox

I shot the lock off my wallet and signed up for Spotify premium so that I could join the nerd herd. Well, first 30 days are free so that's nice. Still won't give up my YouTube Music w/ premium add-on because I could never go back to ad-supported YouTube. Trying to immerse myself in the picks without the benefit of a playlist (a playlist without ads, I mean) was kind of a drag last thread.

There are playlists, right?

I have great news for you. I don't know which songs @The Dreaded Marco selected, but it's a lock that the best is yet to come (and Suffering Jukebox has already set the bar high).

ETA: I'll try to stay in my lane, but I do love David Berman's music.

Gracias, I was looking for it on page 1.

I got through the firs playlist and really enjoyed it. Some comments:

Tough pull for Belly landing between Prince and Talking Heads. They held their own this round though the Prince song is probably the best song of the playlist so everyone is playing from behind here.

Nina Simone's Contemplation is gorgeous and not far behind Prince this round but the transition from it to Fight For Your Right is tremendous. Just everything fun about these wild mash-up lists.

Dare Me by The Pointer Sisters was a blast.

Drive By Truckers, New Pornographers, Frightened Rabbit, Silver Jews are all right in my wheel house.

That John Prine song was dyamite, so was Rainbow Eyes. Those are my new to me winners for sure.

Oh and getting a composer on here is a fun twist though it's not going to help keep the playlist run times down lol

1812 Overture celebrates the Russian defense from Napoleon's army but oddly enough it's only my 2nd favorite musical piece commemorating the defeat of Napoleon. Haydn wrote what is now know as Lord Nelson Mass for while it was written as a piece about the troubled times of Europe, it's debut performance came on the day Austria heard the shocking news of Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Egypt at the hands Lord Horatio Nelson and the British Navy. It forever became a mass in his honor.

For my taste based on the music I have experienced: Audioslave > Temple of the Dog > Soundgarden > Cornell solo. Very much looking forward to this list!

Yep, I found it. I'm slow.

I'm generally busy this month, so in terms of write ups for individual Homme tracks I'm going to be limited, if posting at all, and just let the playlists do the talking, but will probably post some replies if people chuck opinions out one way or another to explain my thinkings. But in terms of the #31, as I'm posting anyway, I wasn't an enormous fan of the more recent QOTSA material compared to their earlier work, as they seemed to be somewhat exhausted of their core range and were just floating around different ideas, which is natural if you've been in existence for close to 15 years. But there were some good points, of which this was one, maybe the closest thing there is to a minimalist track in a QOTSA setting. I liked it enough to include it in any case

Yeah, his solo stuff is surprisingly weak in my opinion. Vocals are still usually still top notch but it's mostly just him and an acoustic guitar doing laid back stuff singer/songwriter style stuff .

30. Nina Simone, Love Me or Leave Me - from Let It All Out (1966)
YouTube Spotify

I was listening to the 31s while working and planning to re-listen with a bit more focus to do some call-outs… before moving on to 30 will just say that Los Lobos, Sia, and Ben Folds a few that I remember standing out in particular. But it was all great listening, and no skips.

I mentioned in my intro post that Nina Simone described her style in her autobiography as “popular songs in a classical style with a classical piano technique influenced by cocktail jazz.” One of the best demonstrations of that might be “Love Me or Leave Me,” where she takes a popular tune (a Broadway tune from the 1920s; outside Nina Simone probably most famously associated with Doris Day), but adds in her own twist — in this case, a piano solo interlude in the style of the Bach Inventions and Fugue. In her autobiography, Nina Simone credited Bach with making her dedicate her life to music.

The YouTube link goes to a live performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1960. The way that Nina Simone goes to town on that piano beginning around the 1:00 mark is just mesmerizing.

(While the “Let It All Out” version is from 1966, she also released a version of the song on her debut album in 1959. One of the reasons I’m putting the album in the track description is because she has multiple releases of a number of her songs.)

  • Song: Primer Coat
  • Album: English Oceans
  • Released: 2014
  • Lead Vocals: Mike Cooley

The English Oceans album was a departure for the DBT’s in that Mike Cooley finally stepped out of his supporting role (2-3 songs per album) to having penned 6 of the 13 songs. This song sounds like the Roger McGuinn lead Byrds playing in a small backroom of a bar. The sardonic Cooley delivers a pleasant sing along type song.

The old man's out by the swimming pool
He goes there to think
He talks on the phone sometimes
Hardly mentions a thing
Said he needed it for his knees
He used to swim back in school

In black midi's "The Defence", the narrator is a brothel owner who met his demise and is in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. He is making his argument to avoid Hell. For some reason, he decides to do this in a form of a song. Paying attention to the lyrics aids in the enjoyment of the song.

#30 Empty Highway (off Unida Cantina, 2011)

(Youtube Version) Empty Highway
(Live Version) Empty Highway - Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers

If the Hell I'm supposed to pay is coming due
I will write the Devil another IOU

Why I chose it
Honestly, there’s a lot of credit to the guitar work for this making it, especially the solo from Jim Dalton. This was Dalton’s first record with the band, having been with (really, currently also with) the country band The Railbenders. That’s not to take away from the lyrics, which definitely paint a story, but I feel the musicianship is stronger here. Might be part of why it’s #30, right?

That aside, it’s also a good peek into the style(s) of Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. As well as some of their influences. Naturally I have my own thoughts here, but from scouring the internet for reviews, I found a couple of comparisons. So I’m interested in seeing what the MAD crowd thinks. Well, a bit more than usual, since that’ll always be the case.

I also think it flows decently with Good Year and #29, but that’s just a bonus.

Tears for Fears
#30 - Creep

Appears - B-Side to “Raoul and the Kings of Spain”
Year - 1995
UK Highest Chart Position - B Side
US Highest Chart Position - B Side
Key Lyric - But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here

Notes
1- This may be one of the most covered songs of recent years. The feelings of inadequacy resonates strongly in males, particularly young ones
2- This has become a staple of Tears for Fears live shows. They have been doing it for almost 30 years
3- There will be other covers on this list but I wont say how many. I will say that their cover of Ashes to Ashes does mot make the cut. Its boring.

Prince's #30 -- The Everlasting Now (from The Rainbow Children):

The Rainbow Children is probably Prince's most musically ambitious album. Lots of jazz fusion stuff. It's largely forgotten by casuals but has a big reputation among Prince-heads. As for me, I have mixed feelings about it. There's that super-annoying computer deep-voiced "narrator" that ****s with pretty much every song. And sometimes, I just want a bop. So, I selected probably the least jazzy of all the songs on the album. The Everlasting Now is just an ecstatic 8-minute funk workout that would become a staple of Prince's live sets in the early years of this millennium. The YouTube link (featuring Sheila E!) is actually from a few years later when Prince was promoting the One Night Alone live box set on Leno. I particularly like the descent into Afro-Cuban rhythms midway through the song.

This is the part of the countdown where I'm looking to represent different eras of Prince's career. By the time we hit 15 or so, it's pretty much all the bangers you know.
