First off, the new Marty comes out this Friday and it's got Leo, Bobby and is getting masterpiece level reviews.

Trailer

So maybe we should discuss this one, with his age, it could be his last.

Rank your top 5-10 Scorsese movies

Let's just celebrate one of the true masters of the art form and get hyped for what is possible the best movie of the year.

This is all things Scorsese.

Based on an incredible book of the same name if you are a reader.

And Marty has already signed on to do his most recent book. THE WAGER. Which is also incredible.

So hopefully it won’t be his last as I have really high hopes for this one. Supposed to be highly praised from everyone who has already seen it.

Yep, he wants to and is planning making more movies but at 80 nothing can be taken for granted. It is insane that Mean Streets came out 50 years ago Saturday. I'll say it, he's the best director, most important director and most significant figure in movies period of our lifetimes. It is truly astounding.

Definitely IN to see this movie. Loved the book, and trust Scorsese to do it justice. Going to have think about my list of top ones from him.

Also, tomorrow night on TCM, Scorsese is a special guest host. Films that likely influenced Scorsese’s adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon by plot or setting, including The Heiress, Red River, and Blood on the Moon (haven’t seen the latter before).

It stars Robert Mitchum so that automatically makes it pretty good. I didn't love it but it was very watchable.

I don't think I can choose between Taxi Driver and Goodfellas as my favorite Scorsese film. Both are firmly in my upper echelon of all-timers. I suppose Taxi Driver is the more "serious" film, but Goodfellas is such a fun watch, and it's one of those movies that you can turn on at any random point and just completely enjoy it from there. Both are sublime.

If I throw out what's most significant or important or whatever and just went by the ones I like most

10. The Aviator - I am sucker for Old Hollywood stuff so this hits a sweet spot
9. Casino- A little too much Goodfellas Part 2 but movies are rarely this entertaining
8. Taxi Driver - When I was 16-20 this would have been 1 or 2 for me but I just can't with Travis anymore
7. The Age of Innocence- gets a big boost for being one of my all time favorite novels, he did a really admirable job with it
6. Raging Bull - my gosh it looks so incredible, boxing has never looked so beautiful and so brutal
5. The Irishman- Likely to end up higher as time goes on, people really slept on this calling it another Goodfellas or focusing on the CGI or saying it's too long
4. The Last Waltz- It makes me want to put on a rhinestone jumpsuit, light a heater and do some high kicks
3. The Departed - It weirdly feels like Marty as director for hire and really not doing his usual things which I appreciate, so over the top which I think totally works
2. Wolf of Wall Street- There aren't many movies this fun, there truly aren't. The characters are pretty much all garbage but the ride is sheer entertainment.
1. Goodfellas- Like doing a line of coke, it's the best movie of the last 40 years probably

I can't believe I was unable to find room for King of Comedy because wow what a movie that is

I suppose it's the easy contrarian take, but my favorite Scorses movies are the ones where he really tries to leave his comfort zone. The Last Temptation of Christ. Kundun, The Silence. Heck, even The Age of Innocence. Like Don Quixote, I really, really loved the non-fiction book this is based upon, so I have very high hopes. And I'm encouraged by what I've read about Marty's decision to rewrite the script to focus more on the central relationship between the conspiracy member and his wife and away from the FBI agent who "cracked" the case (in reality he cracked about 10% of the insane conspiracy that was going on). I'm not sure my wife will let me slip out to see a 3.5 hour movie while leaving her with the kids, but I'm motivated to find a way.

Thanks for not including Hugo. Had to shut that one off it was so boring

Other than that steaming pile Hugo not sure I’ve seen any of the others

10. After Hours
9. The Irishman
8. Shutter Island
7. The Departed
6. Taxi Driver
5. Casino
4. Cape Fear
3. Gangs of New York
2. Wolf of Wall Street
1. Goodfellas

I started with 13, this is going to be tough...

11. Taxi Driver - A good psychological look at young men that don't always make the right decisions or have good leaders to guide them

10. Wolf of Wall Street...a little overrated for me, it's #2 on MoP Jr's list

9. The Aviator - One of DiCaprio's best ever as Hughes, Cate Blanchett as Hepburn, amazing movie, some great film work

8. Mean Streets - Sets the tone for a lot of Scorcese's future work. De Niro's intro is in this film is one to see.

7. Casino - I've seen it a lot, it's very entertaining but it takes some dark turns at the end. It's visually amazing

6. Gangs of New York - Epic and DiCaprio isn't always the best actor on screen

5. The Irishman - Incredible use of film to make De Niro believable as a young man working his way up thru the ranks until he teams with Jimmy Hoffa, takes it time.

4. The Departed - Nicholson, DiCaprio, Damon and the list keeps going. Gangsters and double crosses and inside traitors, it's a pretty awesome movie.

3. Raging Bull - 1st Masterpiece

2. The Last Temptation of Christ - 2nd Masterpiece that was run out of theaters before people could see it. The Catholic Church amongst others announced during mass that we were prohibited to see it. It was 1988, my parents were getting divorced or had just gone thru that. I was 14 years old and stopped serving as an alter boy at church and I got my father to take me to see this movie. It was nothing short of a religious experience and for at least a little while had me guessing and rethinking what i wanted to do and what I felt my relationship with Jesus and God could be. They took a real man and connected that with Jesus in a way I had not seen. All the Jesus movies to this point didn't really take Christ seriously, it looked more mythical than anything. Here we have Christ played as I would hope, a real man who went thru the temptations we all experience and if still with men driving nails thru him hanging on a cross, if he could still have pushed the cup away and lived a normal life like every other man on the planet, and yet he still chose the path that he was put on Earth for, whether you believe he rose from the dead or jumped thru the sky into the heavens eventually, you left the theater knowing Jesus in a way that was much more intimate than anything we had ever seen before. I implore you to sit down and watch this movie, it's terirfic and Defoe plays Jesus better than anyone I've ever seen. Keitel plays Judas Iscariot and there is a guest performance by David Bowie as Pontious Pilate that should not be missed.

1. Goodfellas - 3rd Masterpiece...he basically goes from Last Temptation into this film. He worked partially on NY Stories but that's not all him and he was focusing on his Gangster Masterpiece. There are so many good scenes in this movie and it has so many different parts to it, Ray Liotta in one of the all time best Scorcese performances leaning on De Niro and Pesci. The story goes that Scorcese had to really twist Pesci's to play the character and allowed Pesci a lot of wiggle to flesh the character out and shoot scenes both close up and with other actors reacting behind and around him when he would fly off the handle. Is De Niro a supporting actor in this film? i can watch this movie almost any time, it's in the same breath as The Godfather which is rare air.

(Color of Money snipped)
(Hugo could't find it's way here either and I love that movie) 1931 Paris sure looks nice

Where will Killers of the Flower Moon rank?
I do want to try and see it this weekend.
Many of you know I have not been to a movie theater since pre-pandemic and used to be a frequent movie watcher.

Gangs of NY is the tough one for me. I want to love it but I seriously can't. DDL is ascending to another plane and nobody else can keep up. It's too bad because that is the first Scorsese movie I was old enough to get hyped for and see in the theater.

Did I catch Brendan Fraser in there briefly?

Oh yeah you did. Jesse Plemons too.

After Hours
Oh, man. Started watching this after getting back to my college GFs place after the bars closed one night -- just the perfect time and state to watch it -- and it had cult status for me for decades before I found it it was one of his. Not sure how it holds up as a normal movie, but loved it at the time.

1-Goodfellas
1b - The Departed

3-Raging Bull
3b-Taxi Driver
3c-Mean Streets

6-Casino
7-Color of Money
8-Gangs of New York
9-Wolf of Wall Street
10-Cape Fear

Goodfellas and The Departed are infinitely rewatchable for me.
Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Mean Streets I need to take time between watches, but all three are great.

6-10 all great as well, DDL in Gangs of New York was otherwordly, and Cape Fear had awesome performances as well.

Ok, I like your style Mr Guru

I need to give Departed another try. I only watched it once and thought there were some major flaws - furtive cell phone texting for one was ridiculous. Need to revisit.

Casino is great for about 90 minutes then devolves into a messy ending.

Goodfellas is the greatest movie ever made, imo.

I was able to watch Wolf of Wall Street on MAX this summer. Any other movies of his available for free on streaming platforms? I need a streaming sherpa.

If you're a T-Mobile customer, you can get a $5 ticket for The Killers of the Flower Moon via the Tuesdays app.

You should give Departed another shot. I liked it better on subsequent viewings and began to appreciate it. Not Boogie Nights or Goodfellas rewatch value but definitely up there.

And yes, if you cut Casino in half it could've been a great movie.

I heard a hot take once that Casino is better than Goodfellas. Lost a lot of respect for that person.
That's nothing, I once heard the hot take that Dances with Wolves was better than Goodfellas

If we're talking different directors here, I'll go on an island and take Depalma's Carlitos Way over Goodfellas. Love them both but feel Carlitos Way is criminally underrated. Probably my favorite gangster film.

The Irishman- Netflix
Raging Bull- HBO Max
The Aviator- Paramount

Any others maybe you are interested in?

I've seen Raging Bull - in a theater the way God intended. Might give that another go tonight with a whiskey and a joint.

Heard mixed things on Irishman, but in deference to the man and his craft, should give it a go while I am still able to pirate Netflix.

Don't think I have Paramount but I have services on TVs I've never heard of so maybe.

I don't think I've ever even heard of Shutter Island. :bag:

The Irishman is a f'n masterpiece IMO but that is a somewhat debated opinion. It's very long so maybe you break it up. This is a sane way to make it a miniseries .

Shutter Island stars leo and is probably the closest Scorsese came to a horror flick.

Thank you! This is precisely how I will treat Irishman. Much appreciated GB.

This casting is hit or miss.

Cameron Diaz did fine for who she is, but this isn't Streep the Early Years, either.

Henry Thomas was forgettable. And really, you are playing the young sniveling little coward in a Scorcese period piece. A better actor could have crushed that role.

And he only had to compete with Leo, mostly. Leo had to compete with DDL

Boy......not sure where to start with Shutter Island. I certainly don't plan on ever watching it again. Some of the scenes were just far too disturbing for me. And it felt like one long fever dream for so much of it. Then the confusion sets in, what am I watching, who is this, what's that....I'm just not sure I "got it". But, I can see why come people might have enjoyed it. Great acting, the setting was super creepy and all that rain made me curl up in about 9 blankets. This isn't going to crack any lists for me other than maybe movies I'll never watch again.
