Martyball no more? (2 Viewers)

As much as I argued against Turner last week, I gotta give him props for what he has done. He has the Chargers in the AFC title game now, something Schottenheimer couldn't accomplish in San Diego. I am still not convinced he is a better than average head coach, but he has done a good job lately.
Class bump Ghost. AFC West representin'. Who was talking about that AFC south being the best division in football and AFC west the worst all year long? I don't see any of them left. Maybe the talking heads need to get day jobs.

I give Norv all the credit. Marty probably loses that game.
Marty probably wouldn't have won last week's game to get to this one. SSOG will tell you that's not really important though.
Isn't that the same guy that was saying Denver had the TE advantage over the Chargers?
SSOG knows quite a bit about the Broncos, but doesn't seem to have much insight when it comes to the Chargers (and many other teams as well), so I don't really take him seriously when it comes to stuff like that.

:football: I didn't think Turner stood a chance in hell. He proved me wrong in a big way today.

I didn't say they had the advantage, I said they were a lot closer than people thought, essentially a wash. Gates is an elite receiver, but Scheffler's pretty good catching the ball, and Graham is a STUD blocker, essentially just a third offensive tackle with good hands.

Maybe Turner has grown as a coach? I mean, the game against Tennessee didn't impress me all that much, but this was a very good showing.

And keeping Michael Turner was a great move that I didn't agree with at the time. Then again, maybe they just wanted too much. Like in fantasy football, sometimes it's the trades you don't make....

Michael Turner can't make up for losing LT (if he can't play). Darren Sproles can't make up for losing LT. But Turner and Sproles together? That's a pretty good combo to go with.

Did you factor Manu into the comparison if you were going to factor in two TEs from Denver? I think Manu is a very good blocker. Perhaps Graham > Manu as a blocker, but Gates >> Scheffler as a receiver... I'm not sure how you would have determined the comparison to be a wash...

In my opinion, the difference between Graham and Manumanuelalnenlkta in blocking is pretty comparable to the difference between Gates and Scheffler receiving.

Props to any FBG who thought the hiring of Norv Turner was the correct move. :goodposting: I know I wasn't one of them.

At least anybody who wouldn't give AJ Smith credit has been forced to eat their words. Almost every move this guy makes works out.

When the Chargers brought in six candidates to interview for the position, Norv was my sixth favorite. I could see the reasoning behind hiring him (keeping the same offense in place), but he just didn't personally excite me. He knows Xs and Os, but I fell asleep every time I heard him talk, and I didn't know how a guy without any charisma could be a leader.Despite my initial misgivings, though, I was never even close to being on the "Fire Norv Now!!!1" bandwagon. And even less was I anywhere near the "Fire AJ!" crowd. People around here have a tendency to overreact a bit. [/understatement_of_the_year]

They've really got that franchise moving in a clear direction.

With all the talent they've collected in the last 2 draft, things should keep moving in the same direction for a long time.

4-12

Marty had just righted the SD franchise in his first season to go 8-8 with a team that had been 23-57 under Riley/Gilbride. But in his second season in SD Marty took that Brees/Tomlinson led team to a record of 4-12. Plenty of people wanted him fired at the time. Not myself, but a lot of people did.

This was another tough, frustrating loss for the franchise but I think it's important to look at a coaches run with an organization as a whole more so than one season. The '08 Chargers deserve their record(4-7) but anyone trying to make the case they aren't competing well against all the best teams in the AFC right now are simply kidding themselves. The combined record of the teams SD has lost to this season is 46-30... and even in those games they've only lost once by more than a TD.

I'm sure plenty of people will be calling for the head of Turner this offseason just like they were calling for the head of Marty in his second season in SD. Again, I hope they don't make the move.

John Madden had a GREAT insight last night. He said he was talking with Turner about red zone opportunities. Most coaches talk about the need to convert them to TDs and not settle for FGs. Turner talked about not making dumb mistakes or turning the ball over. You look at Turner's facve ont he sidelines and it is a face of frustration. The whole team seems to be in the same mode.

So is Norv mumbling things about "a play or 2 here or there" like he did during his Drive Towards Underperformance in DC?

They're an extremely talented, poorly-coached team. You don't have to look just at Turner's results in San Diego--you can look at his results everywhere else. He's not a good coach, and he's coaching a poorly-coached team.

... and yet the Chargers are the second highest scoring team in the AFC. Which is what he was brought in to do, keep Cam Cameron's offense coasting along as one of the best in the NFL.

This Oline has regressedand the D while they played inspired last night has been horrible all year.Norv is a good OC, just not HC material.

Are you saying he coached terrible in WAS with the 4-12 team he took over there?I'm sure nobody is actually going to try to blame the mess in oakland on Norv Turner. Anyone taking that job is simply guilty of being desperate to be an NFL coach in career black hole, pun intended.Since coming to SD Turner has a record of 15-12 which is disappointing, but he was hired to win playoffs games and he did just that. First playoff win since Bobby Ross left more than a decade ago.

Yup, sounds a lot like what people were saying when they though Marty should get fired after his second season in SD. Would have been the wrong decision to fire Marty after his 4-12...... it will be the wrong move if they replace Turner at the end of this season. If you want to argue about a new DC then I may agree depending on the available candidates.

You're either easily pleased or you're such a blind homer that you simply are incapable of seeing the truth about Norv Turner. He's a below average head coach. Bad things happen to his teams, both mysteriously and amazingly so. They find ways to lose. You're shocked that your team is four last-minute losses away from being 8-3. I'm not. I watched that happen for years in Washington. It's like Marty in the playoffs - you can't always put your finger on exactly why it's happening, but the more-than-a-decade long pattern is unmistakable.

You talk about the 4-12 team (in 1993!) that he took over in Washington as if the 7 years he had to turn that team around weren't enough.

You defend him by pointing out that he went to the Raiders where nobody has a chance to win. I use that as an indictment of him and as a clear sign of his desperation to get back into a head coaching gig after it was pretty clear he'd been exposed as a bad head coach.

Welcome to Norv Turner. Just go ahead and put your loop tape on the part where it plays "The team sure played hard today . . ." after each loss.

He inherited a team that scored 492 points and allowed 303. Without any substantive loss of talent on offense, and with the addition of two WRs who are better than any WRs that were on Schottenheimer's teams, he has them on pace to score 399 points and allow 367. Norv sucks and the decision to bring him in sucked.

The capacity of people to make excuses for Norv continues to be staggering. Wayne Fontes could learn a thing or two from him about head coaching survival.

Norv has done a poor job this season, but he did get them to the AFC title game last year, and they played well enough to win in that game, but injuries to Tomlinson and Rivers hindered them. I am not saying Turner should receive a pass for this year because of that, especially since he has been a mediocre head coach for the most part throughout his tenures, but you would think some Chargers fans would have more of a soft spot for him after their run last January, but I guess not.

The limited slack is that this is essentially the same team that was in the AFC championship game, if not better on paper. When a team looks this unmotivated to win I think it falls on the coach. On offense how does this team not post 30+ a game. Jackson, Chambers, Gates, (and even Floyd lately) are as good as any WR out there. I'm so tired of hearing about the loss of Merriman, the Pats lost Brady and still find a way to win. With the Chargers its become a crutch for mediocre. That being said Denver looks so bad that I still see this team making the playoffs. The scary part is if this team ever plays to its ability, it could surprise some teams in the playoffs.

making the playoffs? your crazy, They might beat Oakland and KC thats about it. ATL? @TB? two more losses puts SD best case 7-9. It's over Draft a LB with that #1 pick please

On the DC, I'm not sure they need a new one. Rivera has been DC for 3 games, and they have given up 51 points (17 ppg) to KC, PIT, and IND. In the first 8 games, with Cottrell as DC, they gave up 199 points (24.9 ppg). And under Rivera, the most they have given up is IND's 23 points yesterday, which was aided by some awful refereeing. Under Cottrell, they gave up 23+ points 5 times in 8 games. On the other hand, they have only 4 sacks and 1 turnover in those 3 games under Rivera... so he hasn't been able to change the real problem they have on defense -- lack of turnovers. The Chargers only have 10 takeaways, and Houston is the only team with fewer (9) on the season.

I know this isn't your main point, but what two WRs are you referring to here? Chambers and... Buster Davis? Perhaps you aren't aware that Floyd and Jackson played for Marty.

I love thread bumps like this. It allows the emotional, reactionary, knee jerk fans to out themselves.

I'll re-bump this thread after the Bolts win their playoff opener.

Like I have said in numerous threads, the Chargers are not out of it. All they have to do is gain a game on Denver in the next four weeks, and then beat Denver week 17 to win the division. It is more than doable. Had the Broncos not choked and beaten the Raiders yesterday, it would have been all but over, but Denver blew it.

they're definitely not out of it because the division is awful, but they are 4-7 and 1-5 on the road. having much confidence in this team making the playoffs and winning the opener is pretty funny, especially since it's coming from gunz.

Well, if you think about it, if they get to the playoffs, they likely will go in having won 4 of their last 5, so they will go in with momentum. And as the 4 seed, their likely first round opponent (based on how the standings look now) would be Indy, NE or Baltimore. NE they already crushed at home this year, they lost a close one to Indy last night, and Baltimore at home would be very winnable (a rookie on the road in his first playoff game is always scary), so them winning a playoff game, if they get there, isn't that crazy. I just wouldn't be mouthing off about it right now, if if I were a Chargers fan, though.

I actually think he makes a valid point there in regard to receivers, but the uptick in the quality of WR play is simply dwarfed by the HUGE downgrade from the record breaking back Tomlinson was in '06 to the good back Tomlinson is in '08. Whether it's partially due to injury or maybe all those carries have finally worn him down..... Tomlinson just isn't the same player he was in '06. Throw in the minor fact that not only was Tomlinson all-world in '06 but his backup was M.Turner at the time and I find it amusing that people think Charger "homers" are the ones with blinders on when statements like "Without any substantive loss of talent on offense" are thrown around. That's not even mentioning the fact that Gates hasn't been playing like the best TE in football due to injury this season either. In short, I think he's choosing to recognize the improvement/development of Jackson since Marty was there while completely ignoring the dropoff in play of Tomlinson/Gates due to age/injuries...... which was more or less the focal point of the entire offense in Marty's last season with SD.

Completely agree, but it's way too early to tell either way on Rivera imo. I'd simply listen to talk of a new DC because that's why SD hasn't won this season. The defense hasn't played this poorly since, well since the 4-12 Marty season I referenced. People that think SD is losing because of their offense are just misinformed. And I give a lot of credit to Turner for keeping the offense at a high level despite the injury/regression of several key offensive players. This is one of the best offenses in the NFL still, and in my opinion Turner has a lot to do with that.

As far as dropoff in player production, specifically LT and Gates, there are IMHO pretty obvious reasons other than a degradeing of talent that everyone seems to be speculating as to the cause .. Gates problem is nothing other than lack of opportunity .. through 12 weeks he's seen 65 targets his lowest number in quite some time ... 2004 - 92, 2005 - 90, 2006 - 83, 2007 - 87 .. that's close to a 25% dropoff in targets ...

With LT the problem is a combination of things, his O-line haven't been as aggressive and the holes just aren't there .. there's also the lack of the best blocking FB in football being among the missing .. he's had a bumb wheel for a good part of the season and admittedly he's another season older so the wear and tear is beginning to show .. but to write him off as "toast", "stick a fork in him - done" .. not hardly!!

:nerd:
