Mathews vs. Tolbert (1 Viewer)

I'm leaning towards starting him after reading the reports today. If he gets a full practice on FRI with no reported set-backs I'm definitely starting him.

Norv is a "feature back" guy... and Matthews is his guy. Michael Turner seems to be doing alright in ATL... how much of a "split" did he get backing up LT?

Trust your eyes here guys... Matthews is clearly the more talented RB and I think he'll get the lion's share of the touches starting real soon.

Reminds me of Clinton Portis' rookie season.

Football Critic, just out of curiosity... who did you get in return?

Very frustrated Matthews owner, I need some positive production from him ASAP! On the other hand, they shouldn't play him unless the ankle has healed, don't want this to linger all season. Also, that would allow me to start Tolbert with confidence!
I think its going to take a ding to Tolbert or Rivers for Matthews to make any impact. Holding out hope but its pretty dim.

Believe my eyes? I see a fat guy getting most the carries. As to what I got in return...Colston and Crabtree for the pair of headaches.

I actually acquired Mathews, I gave up Bradshaw for him and T. Gonzo, I'm a Finely owner.I've got buyers remorse now since I was able to pick up Moeaki. But my reasoning is based on Norv's comments and Mathews' upside. Edit: I think I could have gotten a lot more for Bradshaw, it was a terribly quick trade acceptance on my part I must admit.

From everything I've read Mathews will be the lead back if/when he's healthy. I really don't think it'll require Tolbert getting hurt.I don't think you're implying this but, a lot of people around here think Rivers would eat in to Mathews' production regardless. But I don't see that. Tolbert was very productive when he touched the ball, and he's not nearly the talent Mathews is. And now with McNeill back, who will eventually get back to speed, things can only go up from here.

Looks like you traded that headache in for a tumor. I thought you loved the fat guy?

Have fun with that. Signed, frustrated colston owner.
True or False, certain things happen that cannot be explained?Everytime I owned Colston he blows up and has a great year and wins me a title, do u care, no...but you'll be thanking me that I traded for him...now that the fantasy gawds can play there role.Colston and Mathews will both blow up now :(

Optimism regarding Mathews

By Kevin Acee

Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.

Provided he can work another full practice Friday, rookie tailback Ryan Mathews will get more carries Sunday at St. Louis.

Mathews returned to practice Thursday and worked without limitation a day after sitting out with soreness in his still-healing sprained ankle.

“We want to push it and get him as many carries as we can," head coach Norv Turner said. "He worked last Thursday and obviously was real sore on Friday and wasn’t able to do as much as we would like. I think from watching him today, and hopefully everything goes smooth tonight and he feels good in the morning, that we will be able to up his load a little bit."

Mathews has shown great speed and moves when allowed to run, but his having missed practice time due to the ankle and having trouble holding onto the ball in the first two games has limited him to 43 carries. Still, he has 218 rushing yards and also 44 yards on five catches, and Turner has been candid about wanting Mathews to ascend to being the No.1 ballcarrier.

Any news on Mathews? I am sure lots of owners are not sure how to proceed with him in Week 6. It is tough to trust someone who hasn't gotten more than 10 carries since week 1.

I don't think there's anything new beyond the news above. Mathews looked far superior to Tolbert last week and clearly gave the offense a spark when he was in the game, so it stands to reason that he'll get more carries, but you never know. The Chargers have been easing him in slowly after the injury. I'd look for around 15 carries, but that's just my own feeling.

Is Tolbert droppable yet with his 3 yard performance (I know he got a TD but it the lack of carries is what I'm primarily looking at here)? A lot of other WW prospects out there this week.

I'm holding Tolbert. I'm sure Mathews will get some more sand in his va jay jay soon.

I'm a Matthews owner, dropping Tolbert. I'm in a dynasty league and there were too many young WRs who looked promising this week to pass up on them. Looking to snag either D. Butler or D. Alexander.

I went ahead and cut Tolbert last night for Deion Branch. I picked up Brandon Jacobs last week and he seems to be getting more production each week than Tolbert, so I guess I hope to see Mathews stay healthy....lol.

What is troublesome is that Matthews looks to be the superior RB, even has good power. Yet when it is first and goal from the 3 they bring Tolbert in and give him two chances to score. Matthews could do the same thing but Norv is going with Tolbert even thought Tolbert has fumbled twice on the goal line this season.

The easy short TDs being vultured hurt.

I'm pretty sure Norv said he was going to take a zero tolerance policy with fumbles for anyone on the offense. Fumble and you won't play. And Mathews fumbled again last game before exiting with another ankle injury. If they had a game last week I'm pretty sure Tolbert would have started. Mathews owners can only hope since it came right before the bye week that Norv had time to cool off.

Still early and there hasn't even been a practice report yet, but I think we'll see Tolbert start this week.

From Monday..Naanee and Gates were more likely to play? yikes..

Not everyone was back at practice when the Chargers returned from the bye Monday, but Norv Turner still believes there is hope everyone will play Nov. 22 against the Denver Broncos.

The most questionable, it appears, is tailback Ryan Mathews. Turner said he is taking a “wait and see” approach with Mathews’ sprained right ankle.

Wide receiver Malcom Floyd (hamstring) and linebacker Brandon Siler (foot) returned to practice and were limited in their reps. Tight end Antonio Gates did not practice, nor did receiver Legedu Naanee.

Except that I remember Tolbert fumbling a couple of times (he lost the critical one against Oakland on the one yard line), but he was playing on the next set of downs.

Matthews has the dreaded HAS that was reinjured. Could linger the rest of the season now. Tolbert might be a nice pickup down the stretch.

Right. But he hasn't fumbled since and the team as a whole fumbled numerous times after that. Norv made the zero tolerance policy going into the most recent game and Mathews was the only one to fumble in that game. If he holds to it, Mathews should be in for a hit in playing time due to the fumble, and a bigger hit potentially due to the ankle.

So with that said, my gut feeling says that Tolbert is the play this week whether Mathews suits up or not.

As a Mathews/Tolbert owner in a redraft, I'd much rather have Mathews officially OUT and start Tolbert than start Mathews and have both guys active and taking points away from each other like the last few weeks. Not exactly what I envisioned when I acquired Mathews, but that's how it goes.

No doubt! I'm in a redraft with very short benches and Mathews is killing me. Each week he's questionable or doesn't play I'm forced to start J. Best (non PPR). I'm about to flat out cut Best and pick Tolbert to cover my bases. It's not time to panic just yet though........there's still lots of football to be played and I still believe Mathews has very nice value moving forward.
