Matt Jones suspended for 3 games (1 Viewer)

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Jaguars WR Matt Jones will be suspended for three games for violation of the NFL substance abuse policy. The suspension would be longer than the 1-2 weeks many observers felt he would get. Jones will miss three great matchups in a row, but as the Jaguars top receiver, he is worth a roster if you can afford it. This lowers David Garrard's value slightly. Perhaps this will be the opening Jerry Porter needs to get involved.
Does this help Jerry Porter get back into the mix??

News: Jones has been suspended three games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, ESPN reports.Spin: Tough break for the Jags, who were actually getting pretty good production out of Jones on a week-to-week basis. If Mike Walker (infection) returns before Jones does, he'll likely pick up the bulk of the slack in the receiving corps over the next few weeks.
This hurts. Have Matt Jones in 3 leagues, and he has been playing well too.

Jones suspended three games for substance-abuse policy violation

ESPN.com news services

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones was suspended three games for a violation of the league's substance-abuse policy.

Jones was notified of the suspension by letter Monday. A source close to Jones told ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen that the former Arkansas quarterback will likely appeal the suspension.

The NFL declined to comment because such issues are never announced until the appeals process, if it occurs, is over.

The suspension comes a week after Jones was accepted into a drug treatment program that could erase a felony cocaine charge against him.

Jones must participate in NFL-sponsored substance-abuse counseling and random drug testing through the end of the football season before returning to Fayetteville, Ark., to complete the intervention program.

Jones was arrested and charged with one count of cocaine possession on July 10, when a Fayetteville police officer saw him inside a parked car allegedly cutting up cocaine with a Foot Locker credit card. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Jones pleaded not guilty to the charge and had been scheduled to face trial two weeks ago, but prosecutor John Threet's office reached an agreement with Jones' attorney to send the case to drug court.

Jones, a first-round draft pick by the Jaguars in 2005, has been free on bond since his arrest.

Information from ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and The Associated Press was used in this report.
How long could the appeal delay any suspension? Anyone knows specifics of appeal process?

I think Marcedes Lewis is bumped up the most with Jones out. If Walker can return he should have the upper hand for the #1 WR, it's getting old always putting "if" before Walkers name concerning health.

With Walker injured, I'd say the biggest beneficiaries here are going to be Reggie Williams, Maurice Jones-Drew and Marcedes Lewis (not necessarily in that order).

I won't hold my breath waiting for Jerry Porter to be a #1 WR.

I'd almost prefer if he didn't appeal and served the suspension in weeks 8,9,10. If he appeals and loses, he could be out for the FF playoffs which surprisingly, could hurt in a couple leagues. I have Garrard or Jones in almost every league I'm in, although they aren't my usual starters in all of them.

If he is bench player on your roster, is he worth holding onto in .5 PPR or would it be better drop him and pickup/claim someone such as Josh Morgan, Antonio Bryant, Greg Camarillo, Steve Smith (NYG), Steve Breaston or Deion Branch?

Antonio Bryant, IMO.

So wait, is he playing this week or not?
Yes he will play thie week. The NFL rules on suspensions and appeals early in a week to give a team time to adjust before they start practicing. Matt Jones has defitinely appealed the suspension and hopes to have it reduced. Generally with appeals if you don't hear about it by Tuesday then the player is good to go that week. I became sort of an expert on the appeals process through the Travis Henry situation last year. Also, Adam Schefter of NFL.com is really well connected with the league offices and he has confirmed Jones will be available this week. I actually think Jones is a very good play this week. He has a good year so far and the Browns secondary isn't that good. He has been dropped in a lot of leagues but actually makes for a very good waiver wire pick-up for this week.

Good stuff, but the Browns passing D is pretty good. Ranked 7th so far but some of that can be attributed to who they've played.

That ranking is definitely misleading. They are giving up a lot of passing yards early in games but just not late. That might happen here too and it is hard to guess whether a receiver will get a TD or not on any given week but Jones should be good for 5-7 catches and 50-70 yards this week and that is a lot better than you will get from most players on the waiver wire.A lot of teams have good success running against Cleveland and the Jaguars likely will to, but the Browns corners are not shut down and if they put a lot of people in the box this week to try and slow down Jones-Drew and Taylor then it could open things up for Matt Jones who besides Jones-Drew is really the only receiving option the Jaguars have.

I started M.Jones this week over Cotchery and after Jerricho played so well I was regretting it but M.Jones not only beat him in yards but also had a TD.He is only owned in about 35% of all fantasy leagues. At this point I will hold him through his suspension because I am high on him for late this year. He may be suspended this coming week but I still think he is a worthy of a roster spot even if his suspension is not reduced. He and Garrard are just clicking right now.

I think the NFL is doing the wrong thing here. I'm not sure they have ever dealt with drug court.

I'd suggest the NFL should have given Jones a 4 game suspension with only one to serve at the start on the condition of successful completion of the drug court program. If he messes up, make him sit the other 3 games. If he messes up with drugs or the like, you can also obviously impose additional sanctions. If he just messes up by doing something like missing too many probation appointments or something, just give him the other 3 games to sit.

I believe there is a chance the suspension could be reduced from 3 to 2 games. That is what Matt Jones is hoping for anyways.

I'm stunned that Jones has made the kind of turnaround that he has. Goodell should give him a pass (won't happen).

The silver lining behind the pending suspension is that the other WRs will have to sink or swim.

Winners: Lewis, Williams, Walker, Northcutt

Loser: Jerry Porter

Matt Jones was clearly the best performer that almost no one started this week
I was going to cut when I heard he was suspended because the leagues I have him are high stakes WCOFF and FFPC leagues which only have 11 game regular seasons. When I heard he would play this week I kept him and started him in both leagues so a pretty huge reversal of fortune. It was good to see him have the huge game before he goes away and that might help him return as the main man. I'm a University of Arkansas homer and I'm thrilled to see Matt Jones turn it around and do it for my fantasy team no less but if he gets out of this with a 2-3 game suspension and a court ordered drug program he should consider himself a lucky man.

I started him this week. I think I read that he is yet to formally be suspended and that he therefore is yet to formally appeal any suspension? Anybody else reading it that way as well? Hopefully the "reported" 3 game suspension is reduced to 1 game and it happens sooner rather than later. He clearly is the #1 receiving target in JAX.

Sorry; no. I meant that it appears like something major has changed in his personal life since he appears focused / committed on the football field; something that has been absent to date in his NFL career.

The announcers said in the game yesterday his suspension was on appeal and they expected to know on Tuesday.

Jones helped me out in a big way this week. With Marshall on bye, and Holmes 'partaking,' he pulled one out for me. Now, if he would have made that last grab he would have won me two games.

I started him in the 2 leagues I have him in and have been playing him, here and there, all season. Glad to have been right w/ him, finally.

From his ESPN.com players' card:
Jones hasn't as of yet been officially suspended by the league, despite contrary reports, the Florida Times-Union. Jones also plans to appeal any suspension handed down from the league. (Oct 21)

:lmao:
I think ESPN got it incorrect. I think he was suspended but because it's on appeal it's not official yet. I do know the announcers said in the game yesterday he had already appealed and expected to know Tuesday. Don't think they would have said he had already appealed if he had not got suspended.

So does anyone know what exactly is going on with Jones? I also heard the announcer say that Jones appealed the suspension and that the appeal is expected to be ruled upon Tues (Oct 28). Has the NFL officially announced the suspension or do they have to wait until the appeal is heard, you know, before an official announcement is made.

Signed,

Concerned Witten owner that recently picked up MLewis after hearing news of three game suspension.

any word yet?
No word yet and I find that a bit surprising. Perhaps we will hear something tomorrow but if not then he may have one more week.Generally the NFL doesn't deal with suspensions after the Wednesday practices begin.
Really?
Yeah. Like I mentioned earlier I followed the Travis Henry saga closely last year and I learned that. They like to give teams proper time to prepare for a week.Tuesday is usually the day they deal with appeals and such. Maybe they have decided and word has gotten out yet but otherwise he'll probably play this week.

Jags coach was on Sirius last night, and while he didn't mention the suspension- he was very complimentary towards Jones and talked as if he was playing this week.

Any Eastern peeps have more insight as to what is happening with this today?

per rotoworld......

The NFL has yet to take action on Matt Jones' reported three-game suspension this week.

It looks like he has a great chance to play at Cincinnati because the league usually makes decisions on suspensions before teams begin practicing on Wednesdays. Jones would be a borderline WR2 in the tasty matchup.

Jones was arrested and charged with one count of cocaine possession on July 10, when a Fayetteville police officer saw him inside a parked car allegedly cutting up cocaine with a Foot Locker credit card. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

So if you get caught by the police with cocaine which carries a 10 year/$10,000 maximum fine then that = 3 game suspension

BUT...

Number of players: Use water pills = 4 game suspension Now we know Pat Williams wasn't using them to mask steroids. Donuts maybe but not steroids. The others? I don't know but still...

McKinnie: Get into a barfight = 4 game suspension

Does something NOT seem right here?

One offense involved physical violence. One offense involved the use of an unfair performance enhancer

One offense involved neither.

He wasn't found guilty of the charge...so posting what he was originally getting charged with means nada. They couldn't say it was his and he plea bargained a lesser charge. Thus, it not as startight forward as you are pointing out.

It's pretty easily arguable that the "water pill" players did more harmful things than Jones did.But the disparity in government punishment is glaring....

Nixon was an #######.

Any serious news on this guy?.. I picked him up about 2 days ago because the owner dropped him thinking he was suspended. I'm in a PPR league and he's been playing lights out. Is he going to suit up for week 9?
