Matt Jones suspended for 3 games (1 Viewer)

then you can't let dudes who get busted with drugs (illegal and you have a no drug policy
The drug policy is explicitly laid out in the CBA, there are well defined consequences that Goodall MUST adhere to (ie is contractually obligated). The conduct policy is much more at his discretion.
Excellent and succinct response.
Is the drug policy relating to failing a drug test? If so than it's not applicable to Jones.

as best I can tell thisis the policy. gonna make this a thread.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE POLICY AND PROGRAM FOR SUBSTANCES OF ABUSE

General Policy

The illegal use of drugs and the abuse of prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and alcohol (hereinafter referred to as "substances of abuse") is prohibited [ftnt 1] for players in the National Football League ("NFL"). Moreover, the use of alcohol may be prohibited for individual players in certain situations where clinically indicated in accordance with the terms of this Policy.

Substance abuse can lead to on-the-field injuries, to alienation of the fans, to diminished job performance, and to personal hardship. The deaths of several NFL players have demonstrated the potentially tragic consequences of substance abuse. NFL players should not by their conduct suggest that substance abuse is either acceptable or safe.

The NFL and the National Football League Players Association ("NFLPA") have maintained policies and programs regarding substance abuse. In Article XLIV, Section 6(a) of the 1993 NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (the "1993 CBA"), the NFL Management Council and the NFLPA (hereinafter referred to individually as "Party" and collectively as the "Parties") reaffirmed that "substance abuse is unacceptable within the NFL, and that it is the responsibility of the parties to deter and detect substance abuse ... and to offer programs of intervention, rehabilitation and support to players who have substance abuse problems." Accordingly, in fulfillment of this provision of the 1993 CBA, the Parties have agreed upon the following terms of a policy regarding substance abuse in the NFL (hereinafter referred to as the "Policy").

This Policy applies to all players who have not formally retired from the NFL. This Policy and its terms shall be binding on all NFL clubs and shall constitute the sole and exclusive means by which players will be tested or referred for treatment, and as to those players having problems with substances of abuse, the sole and exclusive means by which they will gain access to the benefits of this Policy. This Policy supersedes a previous policy that was effective on September 1, 1994, and shall continue until the expiration or termination of the 1993 CBA. This clarification of an earlier version that applied to all players as of February 14, 1997, regardless of their status in the Intervention Program, shall apply to all players as of June 28, 1998, regardless of their status in the Intervention Program. (See Article I below.) Such terms that are not otherwise defined herein shall have the same meaning as set forth in the 1993 CBA.

The cornerstone of this Policy is the Intervention Program. Under the Intervention Program, players are tested, evaluated, treated, and monitored for substance abuse. Players who do not comply with the requirements of the Intervention Program are subject to established levels of discipline. The provisions of Article LV, Section 10 of the CBA are not applicable to the testing of players in the Intervention Program that is conducted pursuant to the terms of this policy.

All discipline provided under the foregoing or following provisions of this Policy is imposed through the authority of the Commissioner of the National Football League ("Commissioner"). The Commissioner maintains the ability to impose other discipline as he deems necessary, provided, however, that the Commissioner may not modify the state levels of discipline for violations of the requirements of the Intervention Stages absent additional circumstances amounting to conduct detrimental to the NFL. This Policy is not to be considered a grant of authority to discipline players but instead is an agreement to impose the stated discipline for violations of the requirements of the Intervention Stages. Discipline for violations of the law relating to use, possession, acquisition, sale, or distribution of substances of abuse, or conspiracy to do so, will remain at the discretion of the Commissioner.

The primary purpose of this Policy is to assist players who misuse substances of abuse, but players who do not comply with the requirements of the Policy will be held responsible for whatever goes into his body.

[Ftnt 1] The National Football League ("NFL") prohibits NFL players from the illegal use, possession or distribution of drugs, including but not limited to cocaine, marijuana, opiates, and phecyclidine (PCP). The abuse of prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, and alcohol is also prohibited. For example, the use of amphetamines and substances that induce similar effects (e.g. phenylpropanolamine, the active ingredient in many over the counter decongestants) , absent a verified and legitimate need for appropriate dosages of such substances to treat existing medical conditions is prohibited. Does anyone know how often players are tested for drugs?

or Why they are selected for testing?

I concede the extent of Matt Jones' current suspension is due to his violation of the personal conduct policy. Would he not also face a greater suspension if he failed a drug test due to a banned substance being in his system?

Santonio Holmes was found with weed in his car, Matt jones found with coke. I wouldn't be surprised to see Matt Jones suspension being dropped to 1 game for two reasons. One he went into a drug facility which means he's doing something about it, two because of the previous example of Holmes. 3 games seems like an awful lot considering he's not even a repeat offender. He's made all the right moves about it, the only thing I don't like is the fact that he fired back at Joey Porter. He should have kept his mouth shut and made himself look like a mature professional.

The Holmes suspension was imposed by the Steelers, not the NFL. Holmes still faces suspension from the league. Comparing the NFL suspension of Jones to the Steelers' suspension of Holmes is not like comparing apples to apples. FWIW

This thread title needs to be edited....here I am reading through this crap only to realize after a complete waste of time that this was started WEEKS ago and he has STILL yet to be suspended...in between reading this thread I was scouring our WW looking for a replacement....all for not :missing:

Are Jags homers hearing anything about this? Looks like Jones will avoid being suspended again.
and/or his injury status?
All I know on his injury status is that Del Rio said he could have gone back into the game if they needed him to. That's comforting but not the first time a coach has said that and than the player was not able to go next week.As for his suspension today is the big day since I've been reading/hearing the NFL does not suspend players after Wednesday's practice so if he makes it through today I think he made it another week. Talk about living on borrowed time.

Any chance that there is no suspension? That maybe he wins his appeal and doesn't miss any time like Henry did last year?

I can't imagine that he'll avoid any suspension. Guy was caught red-handed cutting up Coke. It wasn't just a failed drug test. Although if he had failed a drug test he probably would have been suspended instantly, not this ridiculous waiting game.

Did he practice?
No! No practice on Friday after limited practice on Thursday. Officially listed as Questionable though. This game is the season for the Jaguars so if he can play at all he will but that is not a good sign.Haven't heard any stories about him yet. The Jacksonville beat writers have been strangely silent about this whole injury.

Thanks. It would suck if he missed this week due to injury and was suspended for next week

If he is going to miss the game, can't he end his appeal and begin serving his 3 week suspension? Unless he thinks he can win the appeal, that would seem like the bset move IMO.

He could but he would never do that and neither would you if you were in his shoes. He gets paid this week if he can't play because he's injured but he does not get paid for games missed due to suspension. If he thinks he can get this suspension reduced to 1 or 2 games it would be financially imprudent of him to go ahead and give up 3 game checks right now.

any news on Jones? i know he missed Friday's practice. anything out there to indicate that he wont play? thnk

MATT JONES APPEAL HEARING COMES ON DECEMBER 4

Posted by Mike Florio on November 23, 2008, 12:30 p.m.

Charley Casserly of CBS reports that the appeal hearing regarding the three-game suspension of Jags receiver Matt Jones will be held on December 4.

Presumably, a decision will be made within a week or so thereafter, since only four games will remain in the season when the hearing occurs.

Jones was arrested in the offseason for felony cocaine possession. He resolved the charge by entering a pre-trial diversion program, which exposed him to punishment under the league’s substance-abuse policy.

The league subsequently imposed the three-game suspension, and by rule it cannot be implemented until Jones has exercised his appeal rights.

Jones, who was believed to be in danger of being cut after the arrest, made the team and is having one of his better seasons. If the Jags can climb back into the wild-card race, the team will need him for the stretch run.

They might have to find a way to get by without his services

I'm actually considering dropping him. I wont be starting him this week, and he looks to be out at least 1 week of FF Playoffs. No way he gets off with 0 games.

I wonder what happened today regarding his appeal hearing.
