McDonald's year over year sales were terrible. How would you fix (2 Viewers)

I drive down the street and its crickets at the McDonalds. Meanwhile a quarter mile down the road and I can never eat at In N Out because their store has 20+ cars (no ####) waiting in the drive thru line...ALL ####### DAY! Nearly every In N Out takes over the parking lot of the strip mall/shopping center they are in. And one of the reasons why is because the burgers taste amazing and they cost less. The employees are competent, helpful and pleasant. And the stores are clean, well lit and maintained.
Yeah, I'm no In N Out junkie like everyone else out here, but I will readily admit that the rare times I go there I'm always shocked when I pull up to the pay window and that order for 4 of us costs like 12 bucks. And everyone working at that place is always much nicer/happier than anyone I've ever encountered at a McDonalds. Probably because they actually pay them a decent wage.
Yep, In N Out is not the best burger ever, but it is the best fast food burger. On top of that, it is cheap for the quality of food you get and the workers are always friendly. Makes for an overall better experience. I drive through and feed my family of 4 for right around 12 bucks.

Since my wife refuses to eat ground beef at McDs, if we go there she gets sucked into ordering those awful "deluxe" chicken sandwiches for about $8 a pop and they always screw up her order and slop mayo on it. By the time we leave we are out $25 and yelling at each other over who is to blame for mayo touching her sandwich.
I think In-N-Out has messed up my order on maybe 3 occasions in my entire life. Literally.

The caliber of their employees is exponentially better than any other fast food chain save for Chick Fil A. Probably 1A and 1B. If you want to call Five Guys a "fast food" chain, I would probably place them third. After that...it is a steep drop to the next tier with respect to national or large regional chains that I am familiar with on the west coast.

The older I get the more I just dread dealing with ####ty employees who are inattentive, lazy, etc. But, I know that if I go to these three chains, whatever the location, I am going to get great service.

+1 on Chick Fil A. I hate their in your face Christian attitude, but they make a fantastic chicken sandwich, they churn cars through their drive thru at astonishing speed, and they never screw up.

I've yet to go to any CFA that isn't clean, has bad employees, or has poor service. It's the only fast food place I frequent these days. Probably eat there once a month or so.

I think they hired a new ad company. The last two ads were actually pretty good. The cartoon ad where enemies are coming together over their food. And the one with the messages on their signs. This is a good step.
they're catching flap over the second. amazing what people will complain about.
I saw that. When I saw that commercial, it actually made me semi-emotional. Like, I felt something. People forget that McD's is part of America. They are everywhere. I thought it was a great commercial.
I guess time will tell if this is a winning ad campaign. A lot of companies try to wrap themselves in the flag but not all are successful at it. I think it works better for cars and beer because consumers have a distinct choice between buying American (YAY) or imported (BOO). They'll have a harder convincing customers it's their duty (DUTY) to go buy a Big Mac.

There's a little bit of irony in McDonald's (like Applebee's before them) painting themselves as pillars of the community when the ascent of big corporate fast food businesses displaced thousands of locally owned restaurants over the years. Oh well, the winners get to write the history.
I get what you're saying, but I don't think they're trying to say "we're better than the foreign brand" like cars and beer.

I got it. For years McDonalds developed strategies to get people to leave their restaurants quickly, even getting wider straws so people would slurp down their drink and not sit there and nurse it at their table.

Go total 180 on that.

Most McDonalds have free wifi already. Anyone who has backpacked through Europe knows they are the best shot at a clean bathroom around.

Capitalize on that. Build out comfy lounge areas. Campaign around teens/tweens/20s hanging out, enjoying free wifi, lounging on comy sofas, doing work, and maybe occasionally buying some fries to share.

Take a loss leader approach and try to get people to stay as long as possible.

Wendy's is probably the best of the national chains, but even that's getting overpriced.
I rarely eat fast food, but Wendy's would be my choice out of McD, BK, & Wendy's...

I can get a a burger, chix sammich, fries, and drink for like $6 bucks... IMO not overpriced and best tasting.

I swear, I've told my wife before that I think McDonalds keeps the temperature in their dining area at 65 degrees, just for this purpose. All of them are bitter cold.

The Wendy's by me is a trainwreck. I think they've gotten my order right once or twice out of about 20-25 times. The employees are slow, ignore customers to talk and surly. And the inside is always dirty.

If I didn't like their spicy chicken and chili, I'd never go there again.

They're already doing this in many of their stores. They're "Starbucks-ing" in certain markets. Wi-fi, loungy seating, and in some cases I've even seen fireplaces and flat-screen TVs.

And, fun fact... reason why most fast food joints have red/yellow color schemes? Studies have shown the prevalence of these colors makes you want to eat n' run faster than more subdued colors.

Yup. I was in one in south Houston once like this. Heading to go see my brother race early in the morning, stopped to get a quick bite. Thought I went into the wrong place. It looked like the lobby of a nice hotel.

Although, who was the guy who goes to Chik Fil A with another couple for dinner? maybe that's McDonald's grand plan

who the #### wants to hang out in a McDonald's for more than the time it takes to eat your food?
Weirdly enough anarchists. The anarchists my friend knew in Prague had regular meetings at McDonalds to talk about how to bring down the global corporate machine and world government.

Re-directing a ship this massive is a huge undertaking. My :2cents: would be:

Cut the menu down until it hurts

Quit chasing trends, you are what you are.

Stop with the "limited time" nonsense, it's a worn out gimmick.

Invest in drive through only stores (sorry stay-a-while-lounge-chasing McD)

Make better food, period. Every single item needs a thorough eval before getting put back on the menu board.

i do not know why but i just can not eat there food it honestly just instantly gives me diarea i do not know maybe it is because i do not eat fast food hardly at all or what but even tho it tastes good i just can not handle it does anyone else have the problem i wonder if it is the oil they use or something but if that is the case switch it so that eating the food does not give you instant number three that is where i would start take that to the bank brohans

Two all beef patties, smash the state, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun

Hold the special sauce. Or in Dentist's case, pile it on.

I've got the stomach of an iron trap...I can eat anything.

I eat fast food like it's my job...but McD's INSTANTLY gives me the squirts.

I mean...I'm driving down the road and not even finished eating their burger and I'm wrenching my cheeks together hoping I can make it to my next stop in time just so my @zz can sneeze crap all over the toilet.

They just gotta do what jack in the box did.

Blow up the mascot...redo the menu and make sure it's better quality food.

Right now...no one is certain what they're eating...it ain't meat.

They've stretched the profits so far that you can't put anymore filler in their food...they've ruined their reputation with those tactics and no amount of color schemes and lounges will fix it.

Blow it up...and get back to minimal, good, quality ingredients/menu.

Or wither on the vine.

It's all about the youth...you grew up with McDonald's...so you always go back.

Today's youth are growing up with Chickfila and you've got to win ground back on that battle or continue to die.

Here's what the new insides look like.

Looks like a McDonald's with a fireplace
And are Starbucks something amazing inside?
hint: it's not a McDonalds.
So it's the name? Got it.
It's the identity. McDonald's has been very successful for decades and employs smart people who know the power of branding a lot better than any of us. They've spend hundreds of millions to establish a corporate identity. That's going to be very hard to change because of their size and how well established their brand is. They won't go out of business but I don't think burgers and fries are a growth sector. They've clearly struggled to redefine themselves beyond burgers and fries.

McDonald's sells burgers and fries. Customers go there to buy burgers and fries. They have a clown who does charity work and scares some people.

A fireplace isn't going to significantly alter this.

Again, look at all of the pictures. It's not just a fireplace. They are lounges. You know what people do in lounges? I'll give you a hundred guesses and one hint: It rhymes with lounge.
