Memphis FBGs - relocation help (1 Viewer)

Heh, seems like I keep stumbling on winners. 50 South Morrison, just up the road from Molly's La Casita (Mexican food is a drug for me). One block from the square too!

Also solid area though starting to get toward the western-most part of that main madison strip of bars/restaurants.

Mollys is pretty good... basic mexican done well.
Chiwawa (other side of madison and half block east) is better IMO (awesome patio, better ingredients, tighter focus on tacos/guac/etc)

The Blue Monkey on that corner of Madison (near Molly's) is solid as well. Good bar with solid fare and good live music.

You've also got a Huey's 2 blocks west (great pub grub, consistent winner of best burger in town every year)... and Camy's nearby Solid pizza and such w/ delivery. Also Memphis Pizza Cafe is a staple and is right there on Madison as well. Nice thin pizza with great options... good beer selection.

Love it. All that within walking distance. I value good Mexican, so I will certainly give both places a shot or two.

I figure the location puts me on the edge of the prime zone, but not far enough to be in a ghetto. Crime map says it's pretty solid. I actually may prefer it a bit to Cooper Young since I plan on making some big time use out of the running trail in Overton Park, which is extremely walkable from there.

Appointment scheduled for next Monday. Landlords don't seem like #####, thankfully.

Oh you're going to be fine right there... you're no way near a ghetto.

Once you're in town, I can point you in the direction of some parts of town you can drive through during the day.... I won't drive at night without a sidearm and usually will slow and go through red lights. IF forced to stop, I always leave at least a car length in front of me for escape options in case some dickmitten decides l look like a good carjacking option. That said... have never had a problem before.

I'll say this... you have 3-4x as many dining/bar options in overton square as you do down in cooper young. They're seeing some growth down at CY with alchemy and such but I'm just not a fan of the location near as much as Overton Square.

That's kind of what I'm figuring, plus C-Y kinda makes me a little leery given it's on the edge of a hood.

Being in Overton also puts me near Poplar, which takes me right down to work.

Learn how to get to work without using poplar if your commute is during rush hour and any distance down the road....
Won't be an issue, at least for going to work. I will need to be at work at about 4:30-5 AM every morning. Time I go home floats, but hopefully won't be near afternoon drive.
You'll likely want to take Sam Cooper rather than Poplar.

A little more re Sam Cooper v Poplar if you live in Overton Square... I often went straight from work to dinner or drinks in Midtown, and I always took Sam Cooper, but I had a good friend at work who lived near C-Y and told me he had timed it several times and found the two routes about the same. I still didn't take Poplar because it feels so slow. It's full of lights and the traffic can be awful, but it is a much more direct shot, whereas Sam Cooper takes you a little out of your way. I prefer to be moving and driving fast, so I went Sam Cooper even though that is longer, but I trust my friend that it really doesn't make a time difference.

I spent a good bit of time in Memphis a few years ago, I was there nearly full time for around 6months.

I got to Cooper Young and Overton and midcity, and also a few areas like Germantown. Anyone talked about downtown or the area that's over by the Pyramid? I recall there being some very cool and very cheap property down there. Concern with crime was real and there were a good number of homeless/bums, but again some of the places were very large, very cheap. Anything new happening down there? Has it continued to grow?

Few years ago is a lifetime in Memphis.... things have been changing pretty dramatically.

Pinch district (up by pyramid) is stagnant / in decline. Most of the growth downtown is in the South Main area right now. Part of the problem is just north of the pyramid , it gets REAL sketchy REAL quick... plus nobody wants to live under a web of overpasses. The only area I'd consider living that far north is on "the island" (harbortown).

You wouldn't recognize Overton Square now... likely 500% growth or more since you lived here.

My buddy said that neighborhood he was moving to was sketchy, so he bailed on it. Got a place on Mud Island instead. Thanks for the help.

Mud island has a fun vibe to it. Some reasonably priced stuff up north there. I think he'll be happy.

First day in Memphis and already I freaking love it. Laid back and cool, though the drivers here can kindly be labeled "brutes". Not only are they bad, but they are aggressive.

Got a steal of a deal on an apartment a block west of Overton Square. It wasn't the original I wanted, but the one next door. Very happy with the apartment, the location, and price.

Oh, and had dinner at Central BBQ. Freaking heaven.

I think this will work out for sure.

Oh and icon, looks like I may be at BBQFest as a representative of the radio station!

Wow, you couldn't be in a better location!! Congrats! :excited:

(Try BBQ Shop next time; Central and BBQ Shop are the two best IMO.)

Thanks! A nice old lady is the landlord of my place and I think she's living in the past a bit with the apartment she rented in terms of price (but not in quality, it's more than suitable). Still, not complaining one bit! :)

And yes, there is PLENTY I have yet to sample. But I had to start with the disputed Memphis champion of BBQ!

Feel free to PM or text if you prefer.

This is good advice, though I've come to think One and Only BBQ (on kirby just north of Poplar) is my new fave BBQ Joint in town and quite a few folks in my circle are in agreement. Def give it a shot if you're ever out this way again, Krista

Newstalk 98.9 FM. I'll be on the air delivering news, though when exactly is TBD.

Cool; will try it. We'll definitely make it back there sometime. I have a great fondness for Memphis, despite the drivers. By the way, :lmao: that after one day Brady has figured out the drivers already.

Are you guys affiliated with sports 56 (560/87.7)? If so Bash (on air jock) is a very good buddy of mine. Logos look similar which is why I ask..

No, we have News Talk 98.9, KIX 106, Soul 103.5, and 98.1 The Max.

Good to see you getting settled in here. You managed to make it in between the two craziest weeks downtown.

You're within walking distance to one of my longtime favorite sandwich counters, the Kwik Check. It's the crappy-looking place across from the Blue Monkey on Madison. Try the muffaletta (I like it spicy) or the gyro while eating at the counter. Lately they've added some Korean dishes that seem to be getting some love on yelp.

I wondered about that place, and it is at the end of the street I will be living on (Morrison). You are right in that it looks tacky, but apparently it is beloved. Another one of many places near the square I will have to fall in love with!

great to hear about your move to Memphis, Brady Marino!

i relocated there in 2009, and stayed until 2012. Came expecting to love the job, and tolerate the city. Turned out to be the opposite. "America's Biggest Small Town" is an apt description. I wish we didn't have to leave.

p.s. i was out in Collierville. Married with 4 kids. So can't be of much help with the in-town, single-guy experience.

If one was going to be visiting say, the FedEx Forum in October, where would one want to stay exactly?

The Madison Hotel. A little bit more of a walk to the Forum than a few others, but it's the most chic and nicest hotel downtown and closer to Main St restaurants and bars. The Peabody is the nice old-school hotel there; closer to the Forum but I don't think it's as good as the Madison. Madison also has a great rooftop with fantastic views.

In am actually near the Peabody checking out Memphis Redbirds baseball and it looks like a neat place to stay.

Oh, and if Chiwawa is better than Molly's La Casita, I will be in heaven, because Molly's was excellent!

Peabody is great; just considering what I know of BRONG I thought chic rather than old-school would be more his style, but I might be making bad assumptions. :)

You are doing it up right! Redbirds games are very fun.

Was about to book the Madison but I was on hold for 10 minutes and hung up. And I think I'd prefer "old-school" over "chic" anyway, so I booked the Peabody instead. Plus, while on hold, I saw some reviews for the Madison saying how it was an older crowd...I'm not quite there, yet. Westin was an option but it's too new and not Memphisy. I can't stay at the WESTIN in Memphis; doesn't even sound right. No, I'm staying at the PEABODY; that's more like it.

How's the rooftop deck at the Peabody? That was one thing I really liked about the Madison.

Rooftop parties on Thursday night on the Peabody are a damn good time.
:goodposting: BRONG, you'll love it if you're there Thursday. As for old v young, I suppose Madison is a bit pricier so that could cut the young crowd, but I definitely think of Peabody as old people and Madison as younger, EXCEPT for the rooftop parties, when it's switched. I think you'll have a great time at the Peabody.

Read about the rooftop parties, nice. Unfortunately, I'll be there Monday - Wednesday. If Madison is indeed the younger of the two, I'll book there (price difference is negligible).

ETA booked the Madison, dumped Peabody. Thanks for the input.
