Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (9 Viewers)

So...I went with songs about New York. This city probably has more songs written about it than any other and it's also not particularly close, and for good reason. There's just nothing that tops this place. There's a reason it holds a place in the cultural firmament, and I'll quote my wife by saying I feel privileged just about every single day to live here. And with that, there are a whole hell of a lot of songs I could have chosen - and that was before I even ranged into showtunes, which would have completely upset the apple cart (and really, felt like a different kind of list.)

(Also, I need one of you to tell me how you did the thing above where it actually embeds the song rather than show me this stupid coding that I've managed to put in here. When I know that, I'll edit this dumb post.)

So here's the last five out.

Fight the Power, Public Enemy. You can't ignore the power of this track, and of course it was commissioned by Spike Lee for "Do the Right Thing," which is all the more meaningful as well.

Meet the Mets, the Mets Theme. How is it possible that this ridiculous, goofy-*** song that was written in 1961 when the team was first announced still endures to this day? It's probably the relative ineptness and comical nature of the team - compared to the Imperial Star Destroyer image the Yankees cultivate - that somehow keeps this one in the public eye. Who the hell knows.

Arthur's Theme, Christopher Cross - This guy has better songs, so I threw this in here, because it's still pretty iconic.

6th Avenue Heartache, The Wallflowers - A nice tune I happen to like.

Angel of Harlem, U2 - I find I really enjoy the horns here, and U2's affinity for the US comes through. I have a better song of theirs in the top 31, though.

Submitted my list successfully. Now the first five out. Theme is Animal Kingdom - songs have to have an animal in the song title or have strong animal theme.

2. Bullet With Butterfly Wings - Smashing Pumpkins.
Fond memories of waiting outside the Exclusive Company for the midnight release of Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness.
Hey - I was there too!! ;) I'm still mad I didn't keep more of the shirts I got from these throughout the years. Not sure what my first one was, but my hazy memory is flashing the one for Ministry's Psalm 69 right now so we will roll with that. The timing makes sense, and I am picturing the west side Exclusive as well.

3. Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
Ah, reggae. Speaking of State Street, college memories, and a certain store I worked at that played nothing but reggae when the owner was in.

3. Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
My family likes this song.

The good people of Earth's family likes this song.

Ah, reggae. Speaking of State Street, college memories, and a certain store I worked at that played nothing but reggae when the owner was in.

Same memories. Reggae, particularly Bob, was our morning hangover music.

Which made me wonder: Has anyone done 31 Bobs? I'd enjoy that, probably enjoy doing it even more.

Oh no, what did i just do??

;)

1984
These are very good albums but they are all movie soundtracks in the traditional sense of scores, not a compilation of pop songs. So because they just didn't quite fit with the playlist vibe, I will put them in the last 5 out section.

Yeager and the F104 by Bill Conti from The Right Stuff

Serenade for Winds 3rd Movement, Written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and performed by Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields from Amadeus

Knock the Cover Off the Ball by Randy Newman from The Natural

Childhood Memories by Ennio Morricone, George Zamfir from Once Upon a Time in America

Dune (Desert Theme) by TOTO from Dune

Serenade for Winds 3rd Movement, Written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and performed by Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields from Amadeus

:heart::heart:

Love this soundtrack. Been a junkie for Sir Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields since seeing the movie. It's my favorite Mozart. I prefer chamber orchestras to massive symphonies, and easily have 30 hours of this one on a playlist.

It looks like you did manage to embed the song, but there's just that coding later. Can you just delete that part?

I figure there's at least one coming on your list that I'm dreading

There's a retirement party for me and another recent retiree tonight given by my former company. I REALLY don't want to go to this, but I have to. I hate being the center of attention, but I'm gonna be because no one liked the other guy

It's at a hotel up the road a bit and I'm letting them spring on a room for me. They're screwing me out of a bonus, so I'm going to drink and eat as much of their money as I can.

I was about to check in with you to see how the retirement was going. Sucks to hear about the bonus.

It wasn't worth hanging around another 3 months for.

Plus, I took a bunch of vacation time when our regular accounting lady was out on maternity leave. I submitted it all, but never got charged for it so I got paid for about 280 hours I shouldn't have when I left. That was probably more than whatever bonus I was going to get.

I feel zero guilt after 30 years there.

It was The Exclusive Company on State St. Still have the T-shirt. :p

While everyone is waiting for you at the hotel, go to the office and steal all the office supplies before you show up fashionably late to the party.

I'd like this info, too. I have no idea how to get that grey box with the not-German text and link in it.

You just paste the Spotify link into the the reply box  and it does the unfurl by itself (most of the time).

I decided to slap together a Chicagoland list very quickly (like, I started on it today  ). Not done yet, but already I've realized that, due to too many songs, I'm going to leave out rap/hip-hop entirely. It's not a genre I know well already and probably doesn't fit well on my playlist.

I'd already omitted some well-known songs that were from people not originally from Chicago (Drake's "Chicago Freestyle"). These are a few I would have had from artists actually from Chicago:

LSD – Jamila Woods feat. Chance the Rapper

Angels – Chance the Rapper feat. Saba

Chi-City – Common

16 Shots – VIC MENSA

Go Go Gadget Flow – Lupe Fiasco

Homecoming - Kanye West

And a special shout-out to this one, even though the person is not from Chicago. Chicago Diner is a vegetarian diner and a Chicago institution!

Chicago Diner - Kota the Friend

Hey- it worked! Thanks. I've always linked the songs with text.

Back in Eephus' day....

I'm glad the Plaza is still there. The Church Key as well except it doesn't look like they still book blues bands anymore.

RIP Merlyn's, Bunky's and Club de Wash
I confuse backstories around here. You go to undergrad at UW, or were you here for other reasons? I also have you being in Milwaukee back in the day in my mind as well.

Grew up in Milwaukee. College at UW. Moved to SF right after graduation because I'd had it with winters.

Last week was the 43th anniversary of moving west but still have family in Milwaukee and Madison.

ok, I've submitted my list. 31 New Wave Songs by 31 Artists.

Mix of what I though was iconic back in the day listening to KROQ in College. And a mix of my faves.

I don't have a first five out. I have a first eight out. Just couldn't decide and each was a decent song that I though should get a mention in the First Out's Sue me.

39. A constant staple to this day on XM 33.

38. Could not leave Devo off this list. Huge play by roommate on Nieto in Belmont Shores

37. LIke Devo, too iconic to leave off.

36. Huge at the night clubs...

35. I passed out during The English Beat at the US Festival. Don't drink a case with your buddy before 10am LOL. The good thing is I felt great for the last half of the show while others puked guts.

34. Just a song that had to be in first five (8) out...

33. Another that was played all the time...

32. Feel guilty this is not in top 31.

First, that out list is loaded; can't wait 'til we start hearing the tunes.
Second, you'll be hearing from my attorneys.

Some great songs here getting left off- this will be a great playlist at the end.

There's likely a good 5 to 6 artists that you think might make a final 31, but aren't on my list because I was never really into them.

OK, looks like I have everyone's in (including the Anonymous Theme Mystery Dictator's) other than @Chaos34 and...checks notes...krista4. I hope all is well with @hagmania as we never heard from him again.

Should be 36 lists once the last two straggle in. I'll send the first set to KP for playlist-makin' tomorrow and then start posting on Monday.

By the way, the Chicagoland list will be posted in ascending order of how Chicago-y they are, based on a numerical rating that takes into account (1) artist connection to Chicago and (2) Chicago-ishness of the song.
