Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (8 Viewers)

Five Out

These all have a bit of surf to them, but I outed them for being off-genre and maybe of interest for the brand recognition making a surf rock list.

Psychedelia crosses over with surf some if you're just a reverb junkie. This worked nice on the playlist, and listening to it made me wonder. Wth happened to Tame Impala? He had something good going for a minute there.

Skeleton Tiger - Tame Impala
https://open.spotify.com/track/36Mingw25yMZTkA6hPWr8Q?si=8384d65962b84e5e

It’s a pleasure to give this a listen from time to time. On a surf rock list? Yeah, I believe Ennio has confessed he borrowed much of his spaghetti scores from surf guitars.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - Ennio Morricone
https://open.spotify.com/track/1JSIWsJfxOji0FrxFcxdCK?si=74430a758daf4bc7

This one’s a reach, but we’re just enjoying music and this is such an underrated song from an underrated band. Listen carefully to the guitar parts and it’s there. Maybe more western reverb than surf, but it’s there. I swear. It’s also out.

Head On - The Jesus and Mary Chain
https://open.spotify.com/track/0XK3azZuLvHjHG3aHDAfHB?si=4eaf65d59fb24252

It’s right there at the 3 minute mark, right? Much like Jesus and Mary above, this is big wall oh sound rock before it’s surf rock, but I’m just discovering these oddities on my list and I hear the influence if you don’t. Another underrated band with an underrated song.

Sugar Kane - Sonic Youth
https://open.spotify.com/track/6q03mlzKsM1m3TLpi6T6Cw?si=ea5e3d2e729a4b79

Really getting weird. Cambodian folk rock with a little hint of surf guitar again at the 3 minute mark. This made my playlist while I was still smoking weed. I don’t care what you think, it’s a hellova cool song. Surf rock? If I say so, I suppose.

Sni Bong - Dengue Fever
https://open.spotify.com/track/4YdNWmYfpDL5qpUwyOOnwO?si=afbf957264e343a2

The final list will be mostly traditional sounding surf rock to the point of redundancy.
This is my sweet spot... Looking forward to your list!

And fun to see Dengue Fever... Featuring Zac from my favorite SF band, Deiselhed

31 songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system - Last 5 Out

[snip]

Hotel California (Live) – Eagles (Hell Freezes Over) - https://open.spotify.com/track/2GpBrAoCwt48fxjgjlzMd4

There are several live recordings on my list. This one isn't notable for any one thing, but the entire Hell Freezes Over album is a superbly recorded and mixed record. Love em or hate em, the Eagles were really talented.

Aja - Steely Dan https://open.spotify.com/track/2cgNpsfZcBzdgeNPEeCnue

Really can't do this without Aja. But it's so expected that I didn't want to put it in my list, so I'll pop it into my last 5 (few) out.

Gonna contradict myself here but that's never stopped me before.

I try to keep my speaker testing playlist to stuff I actually listen to at home, because who cares how great some Mobile Fidelity pressing of Chicago VI sounds if I don't ever play Chicago. [I see you gritting your teeth there, Pip]. Still, Hotel California is a mainstay even though I only ever pull it at out mi casa to hear how great a system can sound - the opening strings especially can bring out the goosebumps, then the drums hit and we're off. Don't want to spotlight so I won't mention the other Eagles song that's on my playlist primarily for the vocals.

As for Steely Dan, I know as an audiophile I'm supposed to love them, but I just can't. The only classic band that gets me to change the station faster is the Doors. [ducks and runs].
I actually don’t care about the Mobile Fidelity pressing of Chicago VI, because my ears are shot from squillions of rock concerts and any high-end audio stuff is wasted on me.

I’m actually surprised you hate the Doors given how much of an influence they were on some of the 80s and 90s artists you love.

Because there are no calculations or stats being done in this countdown, I'm not correcting song and band names as I had to do in prior countdowns. Therefore, whatever you sent me is what will be posted, mistakes and all.*

*Except the incorrect title of a Beatles song that someone (who shall remain nameless at this time) sent. I just couldn't.

Got you!

Evil! Pure evil!

Off the top rope with a saxophone

The Beatles song didn't have a misspelling; it had an entirely different word! The horror!!

Got Back?
Just a Song Before I GoCrosby, Stills & Nash https://open.spotify.com/track/4dAN7KcWCWx5jV6dpwtfvN

This is my go-to song to demo my system for someone. It would be on my 31 easy but I already did CSN(Y) for a MAD countdown. The reason I like it so much is it really isolates the three guys and shows the magic their blended voices really made. The problem with a lot of CSN songs, especially if played on a single speaker or in a vehicle... the higher-pitched Nash dominates the mix. But not so much in this one. Here, David is on the left, Stephen on the right, with Graham in the middle. Listen to each guy if you can.

While I'm on CSN, Helplessly Hoping is another that really separates them well. In addition, it's the proper order (CSN left to right). But I like "just a song" better as a song.

Ooooo, I don't love this song, but I bet it sounds outstanding on a good system.
@jwb how does “Shadow Captain” from the same album sound on your system?

It sounds great (that whole album is really well-done production-wise). I kind of like the music better than the vocals in that one.

The bubble burst on Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven earlier this week and I'm ready to roll out the next one in this MAD countdown of funeral songs.

Train - Drops of Jupiter

Train's lead singer Pat Monahan explained this was inspired by his mother's passing- 'her downfall was Coca-Cola and Winstons' he quipped. Is it a perfect fit with this theme? Oh, yeah. Good song. Very good song. It just doesn't connect with me like the 31 that made the cut.

This is my sweet spot... Looking forward to your list!

I built an unranked list of 31 before posting my 5 outs. Working from a favorite playlist on hand made it easy. But 4 of the 5 in your sweet spot are outliers. The 31 I grabbed are faithful to early 60s instrumental surf rock. You have me rethinking this. There's a couple dozen more like the 5 outs.

And fun to see Dengue Fever... Featuring Zac from my favorite SF band, Deiselhed

I remember drafting Michael Hedges expecting no one to know him or care if they did. You went on and on about seeing him live locally several times. I'm so jealous. Now Dengue Fever? I don't get out much but I thought they were super obscure. We'd do just fine on a long road trip.

Okay, done rethinking. 99% of surf rock is instrumental. My theme is post surf rock, so rather than 31 surf rock instrumentals, I'm gonna pick 16 like the five outs and 15 instrumentals. I'll alternate them. Break up that redundancy I mentioned to which surf rock does suffer. So #31 and #1 will be vocal songs with surf rock influences and I already picked #1.

Oh boy. It's the 23rd, huh? Time to put up or shut up with this one. Tomorrow it goes in, I think. I think. I'm having trouble deciding between putting a lot of genres in or making the playlist as good as it can be, which would mean really rock-centric.

Hmmm . . .

I'll figure it out.

I raced Ollie to the deadline once. He won by couple minutes as I recall. We were both a half hour from Krista booting us off the island. You have until 11:59:59 1/25/2025. Race ya.

Ftr, my sweet spot is current surf/garage/punk... Hawaii 5.0. , **** Dale, etc is fun, but not my sweet spot

Ive never seen Dengue Fever. But as mentioned, Zac is in it and i had followed him in some other band of his after Dieslhed... Vietcong, maybe. And Hedges.. yeah, was about being in a time (80s) and place (marin county/sf) that was ripe for him.

It's been a while for me, but here come The Ziggens.

I might not be able to get mine in, but I'll certainly look for a surf rock theme. That's right up my alley.

And my sweet spot is those old instrumentals with **** Dale and co. leading the way. I had the old '90s Rhino Surf Instrumentals comp and that got played heavily in the rockaction frat room/apt./dormitory.

Ah ####, I lost site of the fact that it is a theme in this round. Or it is now, I think.

EDIT: Site? Sigh.

Your several decades late.

I think I'm all set, but I want to do one more pass through. That said, I'm getting drunk tonight, return to the office tomorrow, coach both tomorrow night and Sat am, meeting mom for lunch, then friends for whiskey after. If I get distracted and forget, I won't be upset with a pm reminder (triggers email).

PM sent with complete list to k4. Had to curb this or I'd just keep changing stuff, and you all can't possibly care that much. But I do want to represent.

First five out goes like this.

The "Scratch Monopoly Pt. II" song is a turntablist song. Sub-genres or techniques within a genre are fair game for this exercise. More on that later if you're following along. The rest are pretty self-explanatory, while James Gang might veer more towards rock than funk, it's a funky jam per James Gang members. Quick blurbs about each as necessary.

___________________________________________________________________________

Here goes:

Ian Hunter was in Mott the Hoople. This is a solo effort. A cover version by the Presidents of the United States of America (who had a song that narrowly missed because their obsessive use of the word "rock" to describe their oeuvre or song wasn't in the title) was used as the theme song to The Drew Carey Show for years. It's one of the best sitcom uses of a song that I can remember. Probably not the best, but worthy of mention and note.

Stone cold Sugarhill Gang classic. This isn't in my top thirty-one why? I don't know. Maybe it's so that people won't be overwhelmed by the lists and hear this one, because it's worth a replay. Way, way of its time yet also groundbreaking. Still sounds good.

"Funk #49" rocks harder than the funkier "Funk #48," but who am I to begrudge an open-ended claim about a funk jam (I did whittle songs out that way, too, so there was no laxity here—I can hear the funk).

The Beat Junkies are turntablists par excellence. Their inventive sampling and cutting and scratching is considered some of the best in the business (or the game, or heaven forbid, the art—h/t to The Roots for that)

Crime was San Francisco's first punk band (I think before even Flipper and Dead Kennedys—Eephus, what say you?) and if not that, were certainly its noisiest. Rock n' Roll's enemy number one for sure, they influenced no less influential a band than Sonic Youth, who covered their track "Hot Wire My Heart."

Try looking a bit upthread from your comment and you'll see the five pasted separately. But the link worked for me, actually. If you click on yours, it takes you to an embedded player that I set up. It doesn't have the right songs, but it goes there. I was trying to get a player to embed in the board software, but it won't do that.

Football Guys won't let me send a direct message to @krista4 with my list. It tells me the message has spam-like elements or inappropriate content. I was able to send a message to KP as long as I didn't include any links to the songs. What am I doing wrong? Does this site not play well with Chrome? Help...

Did you try PM’ing shuke?

(Sorry, inside joke, and I have no serious answer.)

Perhaps there are some dm restrictions on new accounts.

I don't think Chrome is the problem. I'm using it, and she got my list okay.

I gave the DM a topic name. I went to the body of the message, typed in the point value, the song title, and artist. I linked the Spotify link to the song title.

I didn't make the list and then cut and paste it. Maybe that caused the glitch. You might want to try just the first song, and see if she gets it okay.

Welcome in!

You know you’re in for a great list when one of the best songs of all time doesn’t make the top 31. :excited:

My guess is because you are a new account with such little activity the software assumes you are a bot or something. I would maybe try sending Krista a DM with a simple hello message and if Krista responds, I wonder if that would be enough signal to it to allow you to send the list?

This might sound crazy, but what if @krista4 starts a conversation with @MrsKarmaPolice ?

This morning:

Mrs KP: what if I just send Krista the list of songs and give you my playlist?
Me: Oh yeah, I am doing these playlists.

Easy to see where the brains of this operation lies.

I messaged the admins and you guys are correct. They said if I post once more on the boards I should be able to send the DM with links. Thanks!

All right, there didn't seem to be much interest in a contest, so I won't put the time into it. However...

ANNOUNCE!!!111

We will be having a "mini-contest." An Anonymous Mystery Theme Dictator will be submitting a list based on a theme...but what is the theme?

That will be for you to figure out!

Each time I post a song, you will have the opportunity to guess the theme. One guess per participant per song posted. First person to post the correct theme will win $200 to a charity of their choosing. (Sorry, I'm kinda poor right now.)

Submitted my list successfully. Now the first five out. Theme is Animal Kingdom - songs have to have an animal in the song title or have strong animal theme.
1. I Came As A Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock - Modest Mouse
Modest Mouse
Modest Mouse has several songs that could be in my 31. It was tough to choose 1.
2. Bullet With Butterfly Wings - Smashing Pumpkins.
Fond memories of waiting outside the Exclusive Company for the midnight release of Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness.
3. Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
4. Butterflies and Hurricanes - Muse
5. Buffalo Stance - Neneh Cherry
This was one of the first songs I thought of when picking my theme. Nostalgia, I guess

Not a lot happening on the MADs adjacent new release front. Another advance track from an "new" acoustic Thin Lizzy project where I believe surviving members recorded new backing tracks to some unreleased Lynott vocals.

There's a new Iggy live album recorded in 2023 with a horn section

@The Dreaded Marco - There's a new Veils album that continues in the direction of Finn's last one.

@MAC_32 - Our Lady Peace apparently put out an EP last November but it just showed up on Allmusic's weekly list

@simey - New Mary Chapin Carpenter project singing in a trio with a couple of British or maybe Irish women. It's produced by Josh Kaufman from Bonny Light Horseman who's also produced a couple of Hold Steady records. What I've listened to so far is absolutely lovely.

@rockaction - New Mogwai :towelwave:

First guess:

“singers named Kevin”

Wow. They do have a lot, huh? I never really thought of it, but now that you've picked it and mention it, they have at least six songs with an animal in the title. Listening to "Guilty Cocker Spaniels" as I write this. The last minute or so sees the guitars raging, in a good way.

Fond memories of waiting outside the Exclusive Company for the midnight release of Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness.

The world is indeed a vampire. Monster riff in this song.

3. Three Little Birds - Bob Marley

My family likes this song. It's Shane Victorino's walk-up song (the song they play for the player from the baseball dugout to home plate when he's walking up there). The whole crowd, circa 2013, would sing along. It became a Boston sports thing for a bit, which had to have annoyed some people (including Bob Marley devotees). I particularly like this song because my mother smiles when she hears it and laughs about Shane and what I did one summer day (long, not totally funny story about me buying a cucumber green Victorino shirt in Philadelphia because all the five year-old girls at the park had his shirt in that color or pink—so I was joking I was going to buy one in a 2XL).

Anyway, cool stuff and welcome again. Glad you got the DMs sorted out. Peace.

eta* Ooh, the EP I'm listening goes to "The Whale Song" by Modest Mouse. This burns, too. Wow. Wonderful.
