Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (7 Viewers)

ok, I've submitted my list. 31 New Wave Songs by 31 Artists.

Mix of what I though was iconic back in the day listening to KROQ in College. And a mix of my faves.

I don't have a first five out. I have a first eight out. Just couldn't decide and each was a decent song that I though should get a mention in the First Out's Sue me.

39. A constant staple to this day on XM 33.

38. Could not leave Devo off this list. Huge play by roommate on Nieto in Belmont Shores

37. LIke Devo, too iconic to leave off.

36. Huge at the night clubs...

35. I passed out during The English Beat at the US Festival. Don't drink a case with your buddy before 10am LOL. The good thing is I felt great for the last half of the show while others puked guts.

34. Just a song that had to be in first five (8) out...

33. Another that was played all the time...

32. Feel guilty this is not in top 31.
Super excited for your list 😊

Back in Eephus' day....

I'm glad the Plaza is still there. The Church Key as well except it doesn't look like they still book blues bands anymore.

RIP Merlyn's, Bunky's and Club de Wash
I confuse backstories around here. You go to undergrad at UW, or were you here for other reasons? I also have you being in Milwaukee back in the day in my mind as well.

Grew up in Milwaukee. College at UW. Moved to SF right after graduation because I'd had it with winters.

Last week was the 43th anniversary of moving west but still have family in Milwaukee and Madison.
I think someone else (looking at you @KarmaPolice) would also be done with winter. Damn kids & family preventing us from moving. 😜

OK, looks like I have everyone's in (including the Anonymous Theme Mystery Dictator's) other than @Chaos34 and...checks notes...krista4. I hope all is well with @hagmania as we never heard from him again.

Should be 36 lists once the last two straggle in. I'll send the first set to KP for playlist-makin' tomorrow and then start posting on Monday.

By the way, the Chicagoland list will be posted in ascending order of how Chicago-y they are, based on a numerical rating that takes into account (1) artist connection to Chicago and (2) Chicago-ishness of the song.

Chaos is in! Great job, everyone! I'm super-excited for this countdown.

So the number one song sounds like this:

So...I went with songs about New York. This city probably has more songs written about it than any other and it's also not particularly close, and for good reason. There's just nothing that tops this place. There's a reason it holds a place in the cultural firmament, and I'll quote my wife by saying I feel privileged just about every single day to live here. And with that, there are a whole hell of a lot of songs I could have chosen - and that was before I even ranged into showtunes, which would have completely upset the apple cart (and really, felt like a different kind of list.)

(Also, I need one of you to tell me how you did the thing above where it actually embeds the song rather than show me this stupid coding that I've managed to put in here. When I know that, I'll edit this dumb post.)

So here's the last five out.

Fight the Power, Public Enemy. You can't ignore the power of this track, and of course it was commissioned by Spike Lee for "Do the Right Thing," which is all the more meaningful as well.

<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/1yo16b3u0lptm6Cs7lx4AD?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="352" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" loading="lazy"></iframe>

Meet the Mets, the Mets Theme. How is it possible that this ridiculous, goofy-*** song that was written in 1961 when the team was first announced still endures to this day? It's probably the relative ineptness and comical nature of the team - compared to the Imperial Star Destroyer image the Yankees cultivate - that somehow keeps this one in the public eye. Who the hell knows.

Arthur's Theme, Christopher Cross - This guy has better songs, so I threw this in here, because it's still pretty iconic.

6th Avenue Heartache, The Wallflowers - A nice tune I happen to like.
<iframe style="border-radius:12px" src="https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/1qEyqHR1xsj2MC4Qy0dsaI?utm_source=generator" width="100%" height="352" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" loading="lazy"></iframe>

Angel of Harlem, U2 - I find I really enjoy the horns here, and U2's affinity for the US comes through. I have a better song of theirs in the top 31, though.

I figure there's at least one coming on your list that I'm dreading
You need to change your state of mind.
What? Move to Hackensack?

You shouldn't argue with a crazy man man man man . . .

32?
Would be top 3 for me. And this is my era and comfort music
Rest seem like fair slots.
this is likely to happen a lot. I really doubt my #1 and #2 would be that high on anyone else's list, but they are my two favorite.
You get that reaction from him, and Metro was the only one listed that I hadn't heard before. That is one of the many things that make these threads and playlists so fun and unpredictable.

Good omission as - to the best of my knowledge - this song has nothing to do with New York. Great song, but I don't see the connection (unless use of the song in a movie set in NYC counts as songs about New York).

Spike Lee commissioned them to write it as part of the Do the Right Thing soundtrack. I've got a couple of these that have connections that are tangential, but they work. Which you'll see.

1984
These are very good albums but they are all movie soundtracks in the traditional sense of scores, not a compilation of pop songs. So because they just didn't quite fit with the playlist vibe, I will put them in the last 5 out section.

Yeager and the F104 by Bill Conti from The Right Stuff

Serenade for Winds 3rd Movement, Written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and performed by Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields from Amadeus

Knock the Cover Off the Ball by Randy Newman from The Natural

Childhood Memories by Ennio Morricone, George Zamfir from Once Upon a Time in America

Dune (Desert Theme) by TOTO from Dune

Ah, this is a nice mix of stuff. Toto's work on Dune was great for a mixed-up movie, and I'll always listen to the Natural.

(Also, I need one of you to tell me how you did the thing above where it actually embeds the song rather than show me this stupid coding that I've managed to put in here. When I know that, I'll edit this dumb post.)

It looks like you did manage to embed the song, but there's just that coding later. Can you just delete that part?

I'll try it!! Will report back.

Bunch of great ones here. Devo is always a standout; they're about the most unique artist in a lot of ways.

I am guessing I couldn't name you or recognize a non-Top Gun Berlin song.

As thumping as a song as this is, its provacative deliberately to get attention. It worked, the Metro is by far the best song Berlin did.
On one of those bands reunited things, THIS was the song chosen by the band to play.
Terri Nunn (lead singer), really hit the word SORRY in that song.

And yes Ive thought about doing Berlin as an artist for the MAD countdowns. 31 is a stretch. Post Crawford Berlin was pretty shiite (guitarist, songwriter and former paramore of Nunn)

I'm going to have to leave Chicago blues off my list. There's just too much, and it would take up the whole list.

Leaving off blues as well as rap/hip-hop is leaving my list embarrassingly white. :topcat: I had to find a way to make cuts, and those genres are easy dividing lines. Maybe I could do another Chicagoland theme in the future that is just those two genres. Yeah.

ETA: Also leaving out jazz.

Glancing at the songs and artists - this playlist is going to have a very interesting run of songs. Mrs R -> Me _. Don Q --> JML 2 is looking pretty sweet.

These playlists are going to be a blast and definitely will keep people guessing.
We could play guess where the umlauts are on a lot of mine.
Or do a list of which letters have the most eg
ä - 17
ö - 14
ü - 12

Im assuming some songs/artists could have more than 1 per song

Some do have more than one. I counted 41 dots for the 31 entries. I think the most for one selection is four.

Wait- that's not right. One moment, please.

It's actually 88 dots- counting each umlaut as two.

These aren't really my Last Five Out, but instead Five songs I like that have Chicago in the title and would have been on my list but aren't really much about Chicago, perhaps because they are from non-Chicago artists who are just guessing.

Dear Chicago - Ryan Adams

Goodnight Chicago - Rainbow Kitten Surprise

Chicago - Portugal, The Man

Chicago - flipturn

Chicago - Tom Waits (sorry, Pip)

flipturn is new to me and sounds fun. Need to check out.

Question about Spotify links. When I click on one, it opens a Spotify tab in Chrome and also the Spotify app. Is that normal? How do I just get the app to open?

Phone or desktop?

Desktop

I think that's a limitation. The desktop only knows to open a browser window when it sees a URL. The Spotify web app can automatically open the desktop app but that's as good as it gets.

I looked into this a while ago because it's kind of annoying. There apparently used to be a desktop app setting but it's not there anymore.

In other exciting news, headed into the Super Bowl, I'm in 1st out of 16,000, $35 entries in FFPC Playoff Contest. Winner gets $100k. 2nd is $50K

My fave all time contest, because it's so hard. You can only choose one player from 12 of the 14 playoff teams at start of playoffs.

I have Kelce/Barkley. 2nd place has Mahomes/ Barkley. I have a 4.05 point lead, which means very little as points double for the Super Bowl. TE = 1.5 ppr though.

Top 200 teams all have Barkley. A team at #35 has Worthy, so he has a remote chance.

I won the $200 version of this contest five years ago for $200K. NE vs Rams. Started SB ranked #16, but no one had Brandon Cooks ahead of me and I won the most boring SB ever LOL.

Anonymous Mystery Theme Dictator - ???

If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next - Manic Street Preachers

As a reminder, the charity contest will require you to guess the theme of this list. Each participant may guess one time per list that is posted, and I'll keep a running post showing you the selections for ease of use. THIS IS GOING TO BE DIFFICULT. If you're nowhere in the ballpark by the #10s or so, I will start giving small clues. In addition to the charitable contribution to the winner, I'll also make a donation to the selected charity of the person who put together this list.

krista4 – Chicagoland

My Kind of Town – Frank Sinatra

My countdown is in order of how Chicago-y the songs are, except for this one. Based on my numerical rating scale, this should be my #28, but I put it here instead because...well, I don't like it all that much. But I cheated a little, having seen that @DrIanMalcolm had a Sinatra NY song on his list in this slot, so I put it on my list so long as it occupied the last slot. Now we can have a NY vs. Chicago Sinatra battle!

Spoiler alert: the NY song is better.

This selection scored a total of 5 points on the Chicago-y scale.

Artist connection to Chicago (1-5 scale): 1 - Sinatra is as Chicago as a slice of thin, floppy, foldable pizza.
Song connection to Chicago (1-10 scale): 4 - Chicago is his kind of town, because of the Wrigley Building and the Union Stockyards? Odd selections, but at least he did sing about two specific places that exist(ed) and probably were important in the 50s or 60s or whenever he sang this. Only the gate to the stockyards remains now, and the neighborhood it's in is Chi-tty.

The Frights! I think I launched with this out of fear y'all are going to hate this. See what I did there. I doubt I'll write up all 31, but this caught me at a good time with coffee and before 7am. These guys have a fun origin story. Hailing from the same HS alma mater as Blink 182 in inland San Diego North County, they weren't even a garage band. I'm not searching the details so I may not have this exactly right, but it's close enough. They were just four guys who played one instrument or another and liked punk. There was some event that was failing to find a band. So they jokingly offered to be it. They got the gig. They spent a couple weeks putting together a set of mostly covers but Carnavale(?)(lead singer) had a couple songs he taught them. They were a hit. They were encouraged. They became part of the thriving San Diego surf punk scene (which we'll visit a few more times on my list).

The surf guitar on this song isn't anything to write home about but the influence is obvious. This guitarist was moved to drums (I think) and a much better one appeared on the 2017 album, and they sort of took off for bit in this scene. It's the oh so 60s beachy sounding oohing vocals that made me go with this one. Punk with a throwback to Gidget.

falguy – songs by 31 different Canadian artists

Burn It To The Ground - Nickelbac
Probably the "biggest" international artist in my list and I probably wouldn't have included it as I tried to exclude the more well known artists, but think it's such a great rock song and perfect to start a playlist. I know Nickelback is, to say the least, a polarizing band but I don't care what you say this song rocks!

Also, my list is in no particular order, just tried to spread out the song styles throughout.

Knowing I had this song coming first I chuckled at the recent Nickelback comments by @El Floppo . I said to myself "hang tight, they're coming"
