She's identified 2 new me that will make the list, you have one but technically Cherry is a second since it hasn't appeared.

Nice. I will inform @MrsKarmaPolice about the competition. ;)

Very strong round, lots of asskickers. These are the new-to-me songs from #27 that caught my ear:

Eephus – Single (Named) Ladies

Days Move Slow – Bully

Yambag – Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

A Room With A View – Death Angel

Mrs. Rannous – umlauts

Louie Louie – Motörhead

KarmaPolice – songs from artists not on shuke’s list

Juicy Socks - Cherry Glazerr

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

Lazy Bones (Spotify) - WITCH (Zambia)

falguy – songs by 31 different Canadian artists

Up We Go - Lights

El Floppo – Mallet Rock

Hey, Snow White - The New Pornographers

rockaction - Songs that state the genre they’re in

Rock Steady – Alton Ellis

MrsKarmaPolice – Animal Kingdom

Wolves - The Barr Brothers

Chaos34 - Post Surf Rock Surf Rockish (80s fwd)

If You Still Want Me - Veronica Falls

kupcho1 – rain

The Rain - Oran Juice Jones
So I was talking with my daughter last night about the theme playlists, and played The Rain for her. As she listened, her eyes lit up and said "now I get it!"
When I asked her what she was talking about, she said that SNL had a skit (80's Music Video) with Donald Glover as Raz P. Berry and the song isn't just inspired by The Rain, but is almost a note-for-note recreation until it takes a really weird turn about halfway through.

Anyway, for completeness sake, I've linked it above.

El Floppo – Mallet Rock

Hey, Snow White - The New Pornographers
#27

This was a cover song (originally by Destroyer, with whom they have a bit of lineup overlap) as part of an AIDS benefit album "Dark was the Night" released in 2009.

I'm pretty sure this is glockenspiel, used straight of the bat to add percussive and melodic accompaniment to the main theme. It's most noticeable at the instrumental interludes where you hear it carrying the melody. While a lot of tunes, especially from the 80s and earlier, will open with a theme on mallet- this is one of the only ones I can think of that closes with it.

things I'm picking up during this.. glock is getting used to mirror voices/bells due to the longer resonance of the metal bars vs wood marimbas or xylophones.

I'm noticing most of the rock mallet tunes are using either 1 or 2 mallets- playing a simple theme, like matching vocal parts, rather than the chords that 4 mallets allows. 4 mallets are a more advanced skill though- so it makes sense that musicians focused on other instruments aren't dedicating time to learning that... and kinda goes towards how the instruments are used in rock tunes to match vocal or instrumental melodic themes. (that's my 2c, I could be totally wrong)

#27 songs

Eephus – Single (Named) Ladies

Days Move Slow – Bully

Spotify regularly gives me Bully tunes, which I always like and play-list... but I hadn't heard this one- I like more than anything else I've playlisted.

ditkaburgers - Girl Groups X Boy Bands

I'm Good (Radio Version) - Blaque

sweet baby jeebus... I loved this track. its super hit or miss for me with this genre, but even though I swear I've heard the tune as a different tune before- it slayed me. love this one.

KarmaPolice – songs from artists not on shuke’s list

Juicy Socks - Cherry Glazerr
always a fan of Cherry Glazerr- fun track.

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

Lazy Bones (Spotify) - WITCH (Zambia)
this is probably the playlist I most look forward to- and hasn't disappointed yet. cool that you're bringing different sounds into it too... because it can start to get same-zy, especially considering how long most of the tracks are. and I don't even mind the same-zy, tbh.

JMLs secret identity – songs in D#Minor, the saddest key of all

The Robots (Spotify) - Kraftwerk

10yo or 11yo me visited my grandparents in FL one year, and to spoil me took me shopping at the mall. 10/11yo floppo was pre-scarves and disinterested in most things mall-related, but... we went into a record store where I got to pick out my first big-boy records (only previous album I'd asked for myself was Barry Manilow). I can't explain why I picked the 3rd:
Point of Know Return- Kansas (dust in the wind, obviously)
Queen- Live Killers (I think I knew we will rock you... but this was a great intro for me- became my favorite tween-age band and first concert the next year)
Kraftwerk- Trans Europe Express (no idea why this one... i kinda remember the clerk asking me if I was sure- and I vaguely remember asking him what it was- he said synthesizers... and I played piano so I thought sure, why not. they were my also favorite band as soon as I heard it, and I was fortunate to be on a trip to france with my family 2 years later and got to see them live in a tiny club... so I LOOOOOVE this pick!)

-OZ- - song / music moments from the Marvel cinematic universe

Walk – Foo Fighters
This didn't grab me at first listen... felt kinda throw-away foo fighters (still good, but unremarkable). but each listen I kept getting sucked in. can't explain why- but they just make solid music.

Mister CIA – Texas Places in Song Titles

Dracula From Houston - Butthole Surfers
Hadn't listened to them in... hell... decades. Fun trip into my past- even though I wasn't exactly a big fan.

landrys hat - favorite Side 2 Track 1s from my record collection

Continental Breakfast - Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile - Lotta Sea Lice (2017)
already mentioned my love for this album. and while it could be keyboard, I'm pretty sure I'm hearing a glockenspiel in there too!

rockaction - Songs that state the genre they’re in

Rock Steady – Alton Ellis
this was fantastic. and I'm pretty sure I grew up with a kid named Alton Ellis. not in Jamaica.

DrIanMalcolm – Songs about New York

Something in the Water - Lawrence
Mentioned my surprise to hear this band of alums from my kids' current school.

Chaos34 - Post Surf Rock Surf Rockish (80s fwd)

If You Still Want Me - Veronica Falls
This is the other playlist I look forward to (along with the '84s) and it's always been fun.. and cool for me- all songs that are new to me.

The super long track tested me a little, but the last couple from this playlist have really landed, especially Love's A Real Thing. It is still one of the playlists I am most looking forward to the selection each time.
Some of the Afrobeat stuff can be on the long side; not really known for its brevity. I’m hoping my expanded use of the term to include Afrofunk, etc. helps out a bit to mix it up.

Theme: 31 Songs from 31 Manchester(ish) Artists
Song: Gorecki
Band: Lamb
From: Manchester

Trip Hop (still one of the dumbest genre names ever) is primarily associated with the southwest England city of Bristol but Lamb's 1996 self-titled debut showed that northerners can nail the sound too. Gorecki, which samples Henryk Górecki's Third Symphony, takes a while to get going but just shimmers once it does - almost sounds like Everything But The Girl. For something that has the bigger bass of traditional trip hop, Trans Fatty Acid will really test the low end of your nice 2-channel system.

I haven't picked up the 3rd in there yet... Keep getting distracted that it's Lamb and not Lambchop. But figured it was referenced somehow given the name and give the 3rd being the indie-accessible tune from his ooover.

College band I recall had a song about Van Gogh using the line... Now his oevre's in the louvre (oovers in the loover).

Now his oevre's in the louvre

quirky kids

Good rhyme on the page. (I felt the need to correct myself here).
For a sec I thought you were saying the band name was "Quirky Kids"... Which sounds about right.

ETA... The chorus went something like.."go! Go van Gogh van Gogh van GO!" I can visualize the handwriting on the demo tape

#27 songs

Yambag – Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag

A Room With A View – Death Angel

Summary: Death Angel is an American thrash metal band from Daly City, California and is considered one of the most popular Bay Area thrash metal bands of the 1980s. They are also often credited as one of the leaders of the second wave of thrash metal movement from the 1980s and considered one of the "Big Eight" of the genre as well as one of the so-called "Big Six of Bay Area thrash metal"

Times Seen Live in Concert: 0

Personal Connection: A ballad you say? Yup, in a sea of heavy, fast metal, this song was one of the first ballads that I truly appreciated. A Room With a View is from their only big label album release, Act III. This song grew to be one of my favorites and a frequent flyer on mix tapes. I also appreciated this band as they were all of Filipino descent, which was very rare compared to others in their genre.

Other songs to consider: Seemingly Endless Time

I would be remiss if I didn't say that this was rockaction's number one played song the winter of his first senior year of high school (my second year was a PG year—I didn't fail or anything). Death Angel were the most versatile of the thrash bands coming out of California in that era, and Act III, which this song is off of, is especially wonderful, IMHO.

But little do they know about the bounty of his wisdom and the solitude of his kingdom (?)

I'm doing that from memory. I also chose this for the thrash section of Genrepalooza IV, which @Yambag might find interesting if we can find a link for it.

eta* Dang, and I tried to go back and quote Yambag instead of k4 (because she must be getting zillions of alerts) and hers is embedded in his. Oh well.

Hey guys! Urine the MAD thread. Let's try to stay on topic. ⛲

I'm already 3 behind. Here's my favorite 29's.

* It's a hard rain gonna fall
* Breakdown
* Long Way Back from Hell. - not usually my style but I liked this one fro some reason
World Leader Pretend
Man on The Moon
* When. Good 'ole Canadian girl. Opened up the country to Country music I'd say
China Grove
* Leaving New York
Pick Up The Pieces - new the tune, not the title
Born - As mentioned on one of the other Mad threads, I definitely enjoy his voice

I like the Enter the Haggis selection. Any further recomendations? Would like more.

Edit: I seem to have almost memorized the lyrics. I really need more songs.

I see Amazon has several of their albums. Where should I start?
Glad you liked it! This and the below 6 would be a good starter pack

Another Round
Gasoline
No More Stones
Donald Where's Your Troosers
Mrs. Elliott
Lancaster Gate (instrumental)

Enjoy :suds:

I've fallen behind on the playlists and writeups due to rain and ZAYN.
I should finally be engaged next week as I'll be down from coaching 3 basketball teams to 'just' 1. I've spun the first 2 playlists, but it's been several days after posting for each, and if I have time for any between now and Monday it'll be just 1 more. Hoping to hit a groove starting then

My #27.
falguy – songs by 31 different Canadian artists

Up We Go - Lights
Lights opened for One Republic when they came to London (ON) for their Native tour. I had never heard of her. She was excellent. Had an energetic show with some very good music. I particularly liked this song (Up We Go) as as well as Running With The Boys

Another eligible female mononym that I missed :kicksrock:
Dude, you missed Beyoncé. I can't fathom how that is possible.

Does seem impossible, especially if you actually listen to her stuff. I don't but she was one of the first 3 names I thought of when he gave his theme.(Madonna,Cher,Beyonce)

28. Melanie - "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) (1970) - Single (Named) Ladies #28
Full name: Melanie Anne Safka

Melanie grew up in Dr. Octopus' neck of the woods in Long Branch and Red Bank, NJ. After high school, she headed to Greenwich Village and its folk music scene. Her singing, songwriting and doe-eyed beauty helped her to get signed to a record contract and have a couple of European hits which was enough to get her on the bill for Woodstock. It rained during her set and the audience lit candles which inspired this song. It was the highest charting song about the festival peaking at #6 in 1970 vs. CSN's version of Joni's "Woodstock" which only made it #11.

I'm not saying a gospel choir improves every song but it certainly can add a lot to the right type of song. It was an inspired decision to bring in the Edwin Hawkins Singers to accompany Melanie on "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)". Their harmonies contrast with Melanie's solo voice and elevate the chorus to heights that a straight folkie arrangement could never reach.

This song came before MTV but here's a video of Melanie and the Edwin Hawkins Singers performing on Dutch TV in 1970.

27. Bully - "Days Move Slow" (2023) - Single (Named) Ladies #27
Full name: Alicia Bognanno (random mononym)

Bully may have started out as a band but it soon became Alicia Bognanno's act after she broke up with her drummer/boyfriend during their first tour. It's been her Nashville-based solo project ever since which meets the spirit of my eligibility rules.

I didn't watch the Grammys last weekend but from what I've read and heard, the only Rock musicians to feature on the broadcast were during the In Memoriam segment. Guitar driven American Indie like Bully has limited appeal these days. It's too bad because "Days Move Slow" is a banger that manages to sound retro and modern at the same time. My ears hear traces of sounds from disparate sources including Nirvana, Smash Mouth, Republica and My Bloody Valentine. The song was written in memory of her beloved dog Mezzi and has lyrics that fit MAC_32's theme.

And I'm stuck somewhere in between
Your death and my lucid dream
I'm no help, lately I know
But I'm tired of trying to prove my worth
To be accepted on this earth
Baby, I'm ready to go
And days move slow
I'm living in the same black hole
But there's flowers on your grave that grow
Something's gotta change, I know

The video is a low budget affair shot in black and white of Bully singing, hanging out and laying around an apartment.

The rain has stopped here and the ZAYN concert is behind me so I'm catching up on the 27s.

The show was much better than I expected when I agreed to go Sunday night. ZAYN sold out two nights in an 8500 seat venue in SF so his career is still going strong almost ten years after he quit One Direction. He's in his early 30s now but most of the 90-95% female audience seemed at least a decade younger. I, on the other hand, was probably the oldest guy in the house; all the kids in our row were very polite though and called me "sir". With everything going on in the world, it was truly life affirming to be in a room filled with so much positive energy. I'm glad ditkaburgers thought to invite her old man.

I'm not cultured enough to have ever picked that up on my own - the only Gorecki I know is L***** Gorecki, who said 'yes' to my awkward request and slow-danced in circles with me to Say You, Say Me in 8th grade.

Gorecki's 3rd is one of the masterpieces of 20th century Classical music. The 1992 recording by the London Sinfonietta is the most famous but I also like saxophonist Colin Stetson's version from 2016.

Peter Weir used it to great effect during the plane crash scene in Fearless.

I didn't realize that... Underrated movie.

WNYC used to do a "new sounds" alternative classical night.. I heard it there, but they mentioned that it had been in another movie I had seen- Police (French movie)- where id noticed it.

Speaking of trip hop... My favorite version is Beth Gibbons singing in original Polish in Poland
