Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (9 Viewers)

#21: GANG OF FOUR - NATURAL'S NOT IN IT

I've been listening to Gang of Four for awhile now, but mainly only Entertainment! which of course is a great album. I know I've taken others from that one, but landed on this. One of the few I didn't pivot off my main album of listening for an artist. Part of that reason is until about a year ago I would have told you they only have a couple albums in the late 70s/early 90s. I remember quickly looking on spotify a while ago and thinking I only saw a bunch of live albums on the platform from that time, but not other albums. I started listening to others recently and really loved the variety and liked all the albums.

Recommended listening: I would stress to start with Entertainment! and go from there if you like this at all and are unfamiliar. I know I have seen Damaged Goods and maybe Ether and/or Glass. All were in contention for the song here. Paralysed was the other I was deciding between at the end, and I also like I all of Solid Gold. I like that you start hearing tweaks to their sound right away. I hear bands like DEVO in the debut, and Can in the 2nd album. Then you get to the 80s and I start hearing a sound more like Duran Duran, but still sounding like Gang of Four. I was listening to Hard while shoveling this morning at work, and would recommend that one, as well as Content from 2011.

Next: I seem to gravitate to this region of the country a lot for music. One of my MAD31 artists were from the area, as is a punk band in my top 10. We will knock out another hip hop group before getting away from that for about a dozen picks.
I really liked this one. I’ll need to dive further into these guys.
@Yo Mama then may I suggest a little crossover tune from Hard?

Single (Named) Lady #21 - Lulu - "To Sir with Love" (1967)
Full name: Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie (mononym given to her at age 14 by her manager)

Lulu is a Scottish lass who's been in showbiz since she was a kid. She had a few UK hits as a member of Lulu and the Luvvers and as a solo artist before making it big in the US with this song. It hit number #1 over here and was the top selling single of 1967. "To Sir with Love" is from the movie of the same name; Lulu also appeared in the film as one of Sir's students, Babs Pegg.

The song was Mrs. Eephus #1 on the UK countdown. Here's the writeup from then:

I was surprised by this one but I probably shouldn't since I know how much she loves the movie and Sidney Poitier. Lulu's theme song is a beautiful love song with an exceptional string arrangement. It was the best selling single in the US during 1967. Six degrees fun fact: the composer Mark London was best friends with famed Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant. London and Grant managed 60s Scottish band Stone the Crows whose singer Maggie Bell who sang with Rod Stewart on "Every Picture Tells a Story" and whose guitarist Les Harvey was electrocuted on stage during a performance.

Mrs. Eephus first saw the film To Sir With Love at the age of six. She said it was a life changing experience for her. She fell in love with Poitier of course but more importantly it was the first time she learned there were Black people in England. She says it opened her eyes to the wider world and set the course for a lifetime of Anglophilia.

No video but here's the ending of the movie complete with about a minute of Babs singing the song..

MAC_32 – Songs to play during (and after) a funeral

Angel's Son - Sevendust
This song is very touching. I assume there's a personal story there.
Of course, and it's a difficult one.

June 22, 2001. It was the summer after senior year of high school. I had been drunk or high for about 3 weeks straight with no end in sight - I was immortal, just ask me. All of us were. The things that I remember about that summer make me wonder how I'm still alive, let alone the things that I don't. But that night I remember vividly.

There were 8-12 of us in the garage. It was cracked just enough for people to roll in-and-out, but not enough for those on the outside (cops) to see what was going on inside. Another group was on the 2nd level of the townhouse and a small group was settled around the bong in the bedroom that shared a wall with the garage. There was nothing distinguishable about that night until we heard hysterics, getting progressively louder as a couple females got closer to the house. They rolled under the door, first one, then the other, and...'BRYAN'S DEAD.' While there were a few Bryan's we knew, there was only one that would've been linked to both of them.

Stunned silence filled what moments earlier was a room full of laughter and off-color banter. The girls weren't there, but their roommates were in the car following them, and described the events. He was one of three people in an SUV - they were going too fast entering town, made a turn too tight, into oncoming traffic, where another car was, then they over-corrected, and started flipping over. 2 of them were banged up - the driver had some broken bones and the guy in the back seat got away with bumps / bruises and we later find out a mild concussion, but Bryan? He wasn't wearing a seat belt, flew out of the car, and was crushed to death. Our immortality was no more. As we reconciled what was just shared with us, one of the 8-12 disappeared unbeknowst to us. He returned a few minutes later with his acoustic, quietly sat down, then started strumming until he commanded the attention of the room.

One last song
Given to an Angel's Son
As soon as you were gone

There were several more numbers that followed, but that first one and the images of the sing-a-long that followed will be tattooed in my head until my memories are no more.

Oh man, this one hit me hard tonight. Yesterday was the memorial service for my wife’s uncle. We were all very close to him (he was my son’s godfather). So it’s been a tough few weeks since his passing (**** cancer). I played this one three times in a row and had myself a good cry while finishing up some yard work outside. Thank you for this one. ♥️

Favorite new to me
simey – Barbara's Song - Ian Noe - My notes tell me that my previous introduction to this artist was also from simey (Letter to Madeline),
KarmaPolice – Natural's Not In It - Gang of Four - about time you posted something worth adding ;)
Pip’s Invitation – It's All Too Much - Steve Hillage
scorchy – Do The Du - A Certain Ratio
Chaos34 - Uncertain Times - Raveonettes

22. "Indie Rokkers" - Soccer Mommy

This is a cover song! Cribbed from the "Time to Pretend" MGMT EP, Soccer Mommy (Sophie Allison) delivers a twist—a mid-tempo rocker rather than a more upbeat electronica single. This pacing makes it a touch more emotional and urgent even if it really is about sex in the backseat of a car while on ecstasy. Perhaps my favorite of all the tracks on this countdown and the one I was most looking forward to presenting. 2005-2008 MGMT is as good a group as I can remember listening to.

I found blood and I saw stars
All in the backseat of your car
And I told you it was love
But you don't wanna know the truth
I'm a young man in my prime
With my heart still filled with fear
And it goes on clear

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

African Jive (Moto) (Spotify) - **** Khoza (Malawi / South Africa)
DÍck Khoza was a drummer and bandleader of the Pelican Club in Soweto, South Africa. He recorded his Chapita album, on which this song appears, a couple of months after the Soweto uprising of 1976. His musical style was jazz, but Khoza said the Chapita album took a lot of influence from the music of Osibisa, who appeared earlier on my playlist. This one has a South African jazz feel of someone like Hugh Masekela, but it is a little bit faster and a little bit funkier.

Speaking of Osibisa, my next one up will have a connection to both Osibisa and Fela Kuti. 🕺

Loved this one. I had no idea what to expect from this theme but it’s been fantastic.

"She Drives Me Crazy" is a song by British group Fine Young Cannibals, released in 1988 by London Records as the first single from their second and final album, The Raw & the Cooked (1989). The song was written by the group's frontman Roland Gift with David Steele and produced by FYC with David Z. It peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart in January 1989, becoming the band's highest charting single. "She Drives Me Crazy" proved an even bigger hit in the US, topping the Billboard Hot 100 on 15 April 1989 for one week and becoming the first of two chart-topping singles for the band on that chart. It also reached No.1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart, as well as in countries including Australia, Austria, Canada, New Zealand and Spain. It reached the top 3 on several European charts including Belgium, West Germany, Iceland, Ireland and Switzerland. Two different music videos were produced for the song, directed by Philippe Decouflé and Pedro Romhanyi.

Great song but I think New Wave was over before 1988-89.

If I were to bracket it, I'd say it's the period between the Sex Pistols breakup (Jan 14, 1978) and Live Aid (July 13, 1985). There isn't a lot outside the tent before 1978 and by 1985, it really wasn't new anymore.

Went more by the group and chose my fave song from them on my list.

Hold on, this thing is at 50 pages already?

Have not even gone through the initial post, but the topic is funny. I mean, they are all over a chick on a fantasy football board.

Krista5 is on fire. Well done!

The point, poorly presented I guess, was that she is AWESOME.

We can start with the fact she is smarter than 99% of this forum.

How to say this with some sort of dignity, is not worth it. I'll get banned. Just know it was meant to be a sort of "compliment", for lack of a better word, which she would nail, btw, but I am way too lazy and buzzed to define it properly right now.

K4, you are as good as it gets, make no mistake about it. We all would LOVE to spend every last day in your presence. Most just cloak that part.

Not sure why this one popped in my head.

Also James Brown may be the King of Funk, and along with George Clinton and Sly the guys who developed it. I think quincy was there first.

He arranged that in 1955, and while it's not in the credits, I'm positive that's him on trumpet. Also this track was recommended to me as a soundcheck for your "good" system. How's the bass sound? Punchy and tight? That's a good system.

Song: 555
Artist: Jimmy Eat World
Year: 2019

(Official Music Video) Jimmy Eat World - 555 (Official Video)
(Live version) Jimmy Eat World - 555 (Live 2021)

4 Lines:
Never had anything to prove
But never was anyone like you
All you fought through, all you had to face
Made you stronger, unafraid

Number Theory:
Most of the songs that were under consideration for the playlist were known by me going into the process. This one’s an exception, discovered during research. That’s no doubt helped by it being released roughly 5 ½ years ago, though it’s a fair question as to how many Jimmy Eat World songs I could name past “The Middle”. It’s a fairly catchy song with a synth-wave vibe to it.

“555” is used as a prefix for fictitious phone numbers across U.S. shows, movies, etc. It ties into the phrase “talking to dead, dead line” from the chorus. Jim Adkins has said that 555 is “about acceptance” and that acceptable “usually involves facing an uncomfortable truth about your current condition”. So many have also attributed a more spiritual connection to not getting an answer and feeling like you’re “moving in place”.

Check out that video if you have time, too. It’s definitely it’s own thing visually. There was even a graphic novel released (also called “555”) that explores the character shown in the video. Though I didn’t check that out, so no review there.

Significant Digits:
Off album#: 10
Track #: 4

Artist crossover with other playlists: 10
(Known: 6) Van Halen (x2) currently in the lead!

Next on the countdown, no, this song isn’t about a brand of cleaning products.

-OZ- - song / music moments from the Marvel cinematic universe

The Chain - Fleetwood Mac
So much more than a theme for racing ;) the chain (including various versions) is one of my favorite songs of all time. The beat, the breaks, the message, I put it up there with stairway to heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody and others.

Scene where Star lord goes to discover his father (but not his daddy) is emotionally charged and will have implications later on.

Although, peanuts did it better

Next up - we take a slight detour from the movies into one of the best MCU TV shows imo.

Last night we were at the emergency vet until after 1 AM with our 17-year-old cat Boo. She had been acting off since Friday night and by last night was unable to use her litter box. Imaging did not reveal any blockages or evidence of constipation, so they think she has a UTI and gave her antibiotics for it.

However, the images included the lower part of her lungs, and revealed some sort of lump there. Further testing would be needed to know exactly what it is, but they did not think it was related to her current symptoms. We are not going to pursue it further unless/until she develops symptoms that seem related to it. We do not think it is a good idea to subject a 17-year-old cat to aggressive treatment should it come to that.

My son, who is on the autism spectrum, is very attached to this cat, but he agrees that she shouldn't be subjected to anything that would hurt her quality of life.

So much goodness in the 21s!
The standouts to me:

JMLs secret identity – songs in D#Minor, the saddest key of all

Scar Tissue (Spotify) - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

🌶️ Like many of us, we loved the 🌶️ in high school, then when I graduated college in 99 they dropped possibly their best album for “newly minted adults”.

Mt. Man – Number, Please

555 - Jimmy Eat World
I don’t think I’d heard this, 👍
falguy – songs by 31 different Canadian artists

Here For a Good Time - Trooper
“I’ll Take songs I forgot I liked for $800 Alex”
Raging weasel – name-checking Beatles or their songs

I Dig Rock and Roll Music - Peter, Paul and Mary
PPM is one of those bands I know I like a decent amount of their stuff but really couldn’t name more than a couple songs. This is one of them.
jwb – songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system

Song for America – Kansas
I took a deep dive into Kansas a couple months ago. Or tried to. Other than the big two, SfA is one of the few I like.

shuke – Saxytime

Spooky (Spotify) - Dusty Springfield
❤️
DrIanMalcolm – Songs about New York

Juicy - Notorious BIG
Is This His biggest mainstream hit? 🍑
Zegras11 – New wave

She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals
Yes she does

Sorry to hear. We are in almost the exact same spot with our 12 year old black lab mix. Mass in lung, but no definitive answer following $2500 of tests. We've been told any of the three courses of action (surgery, short term chemo, long term chemo) wouldn't necessarily cure the issue.

Theme: 31 Songs from 31 Manchester(ish) Artists
Song: Do the Du
Band: A Certain Ratio
From: Flixton, Manchester

Tony Wilson supposedly signed A Certain Ratio to famed Manchester label Factory Records thinking he might have found the next Joy Division - instead he got something way funkier and more fashionable.* Obviously they were never as big as Joy DIvision, but you can hear the influence of songs like Do the Du all throughout the dance-punk revival of the mid-aughts in bands like LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture. After ditching the band in the early 80s, keyboardist Andy Connell went on to form Swing Out Sister, a different kind of sound entirely.

*A Certain Ratio featured in the film 24 Hour Party People where Tony Wilson describes them as "having all the energy of Joy Division but better clothes."

Staying with the post-punk thing, so happy to see Gang of Four show up and get the love from some folks that were unfamiliar. It got me thinking of how Leeds could almost be considered ground zero for the post-punk movement - so much so that there's even a book about it. It's only an hour up the M62 from Manchester and even if I couldn't get a 31-band MAD list, a top 20 would be gold, headlined by Gang of Four, Sisters of Mercy, The Mekons, and landfill indie legends Kaiser Chiefs.

The Mountain Goats - Andrew Eldritch is Moving Back to Leeds

It's cool that ACR is still alive and cooking. Their album from a couple of years ago is worth a listen.

I'm sorry to hear about the health issues of your pups and meows and hope they'll be ok.

We have four elderly cats (13-16 years old) and have had massive struggles with their health since moving back to Chicago five months ago. We decided to take them all to vets here (we're going to two different ones to test them out) so that we could establish care, but I didn't expect to find all of this:

1. First one needed dental surgery, which we got done immediately. No other issues so far.

2. Second had lost weight and was hyper-thyroid. Vet recommended a treatment that was going to cost $20k and would involve keeping the cat separated, special food, etc. for a period of time because he would be radioactive. Ummm...? We decided to try twice daily meds instead, and I felt like a terrible pet parent for not going for the expensive treatment, but after a couple of changes in dosage, the meds have gotten him where he should be.

3. Third also had hyper-thyroid. Twice daily meds for him, too, and it seems to be controlled. BUT he also had high blood pressure. Tried one med, which didn't get it down enough, so now have him on a second med, and he now gets blood pressure meds three times a day and thyroid meds twice a day.

4. Fourth also needed a dental, but before we got her in for that, she had a problem and we ended up at the vet ER. They diagnosed probable pancreatitis. We tried to get that under control with Pepcid (seriously that was the recommendation). Then took her to the regular vet for blood work before her dental surgery. There they found she'd lost three pounds in a couple of months (she is a very large cat but this was still a lot). So we had an ultrasound done, which showed some issues. Recommendation was for a biopsy. The day of what I thought was the scheduled biopsy, they instead decided to run more blood tests (another $700, yay), which found she was low in B12, so now we have to give her injections once a week. The overall diagnosis was either cancer or irritable bowel syndrome, so we rescheduled the biopsy to find out. The night before, it occurred to me that if we went through with the biopsy (another $4700), the recommendation would be to do chemo (another $5000+). Feeling like a bad pet parent instance #2, but I asked our regular vet if we could treat it as if it were IBS and see what happened first. So now she gets a steroid pill once a day, and it seems to be working because she's had not noticeable issues in the last couple of weeks.

TLDR version: in five months we've gone from nothing to giving our cats eight medicines per day and one shot per week. And two dental surgeries.

I call bullsh!t on this vet. Both our cats had the radioiodide treatment for hyperthyroidism and it cost nowhere near $20K. Probably around $3K when you include the pre-procedure testing. This was in 2022 for Boo and 2023 for Nassau, so it's not like it was a long time ago.

In addition, you do not need to keep the cat separated. They are only radioactive to any real degree for about 24 hours, during which they are still at the facility where they had the treatment. They are discharged 2 to 5 days after depending on the dose they got. It was quick for both of ours because they are small and received a small dose.

You are not supposed to be holding the cat constantly for about a week, but it's fine to pat them occasionally. Even if you did snuggle them regularly, the amount of radiation that you would get from them once they are home is much less than that of a chest X-ray.

They did not need special food.

The one change we did have to make when they got home concerned their litter boxes. We were asked to wear masks and gloves when scooping them for 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure and to store the waste from this period in an isolated area (we used a trash can in our outdoor shed) for about 6 weeks before putting it out with the trash. And we were asked to dispose of their litter boxes and scooping accessories from the 2-to-3 week period at the same time as disposing of the waste from that period itself. In 2022, we decided they needed new litter boxes anyway, so we used the old ones after Boo came home and replaced them after a few weeks. In 2023, we got biodegradable short-term litter boxes to use for a few weeks after Nassau came home.

We picked this option because neither of our cats are the kind to let us medicate them every day, and because the procedure cures the problem.

Here's how the place where we got their procedures done explains it: https://bluepearlvet.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Radioiodine-I-131-website-info.pdf

It's great that the meds are working for your cat, but if you are still "vetting" vets, I would give this one the boot.

When Nassau, who is now 15, was being worked up for her hyperthyroid procedure in 2023, she was also found to be B12-deficient, and we were also told it likely meant she had IBS or small-cell lymphoma.

We decided to do an injection treatment with her, because as I mentioned, these cats are not going to let us do the daily-medication thing with them. It was once a week for the first 3 months or so, and once a month thereafter.

We did not do the biopsy. The vet said that small-cell lymphoma takes a long time to develop and often never becomes symptomatic, unlike large-cell lymphoma, which is what killed our cat Cassidy, who was Nassau's biological half-brother.

She's gone from 5.3 pounds at the time of her hyperthyroid procedure/beginning of B12 shots to 5.9 pounds as of last month and has had no serious subsequent health issues.

"Treating it as IBS" was the right strategy for us and looks like it is the right strategy for you.

I wasn't clear, but the isolation was from the other cats, not from us, including having different litterboxes, etc. So I think it's in line with what you did. I read up on all of it in various places before making the decision rather than relying on the vet's description. The only thing I didn't really research was the cost. Yikes, that's a huge difference! The cost did not come from our regular vet but from the specialty vet that would be doing the treatment. And it was more like $15k for the treatment and then another few thousand in pre- and post-testing, etc. I wonder why that place is so completely out of whack from your experience?! I have found the costs for all vet stuff to be 2-3 times what we were paying in Washington, though the cost of living here is essentially the same for most items. That still doesn't explain the difference, though.

Hmm, if only there was a veterinarian in the thread who recently just joined FBGs....
Would be very interested to hear as while i appreciate that vets can and do magnificent work, there seems to be a lot of unnecessary expense to vulnerable people in vulnerable situations.
I know people who have paid thousands, sometimes tens of thousands to keep their beloved pets alive.
But the suffering is immense and outcomes probably the same.

That's just wacky re the cost. When we decided on this option for Boo in 2022, we looked into three places and the one we chose was in the middle in terms of price but the other two weren't vastly different. And it's not like Philly/South Jersey has an extremely low cost of living. We mainly went with them because we liked their protocol and we liked how they explained everything to us.

We told them that all of our cats use all of the litter boxes and there was no practical way to separate them unless we locked the radioactive one in a room with a litter box, and they said it was fine to not separate the cats and to keep our regular litter-box setup as long as they were scooped regularly (which we do anyway).

Switching over to dogs, Lou and I walked over to the protests at SF City Hall today. We hung out for a while, ran into some friends and did a little chanting (me, not Lou). I could feel it when he'd had enough of the crowd so we headed home. I feel slightly better for having done something.

I listened to the #21s both ways to keep things on thread.

Switching over to Chi-Fi.

I did it again. At 6am I wrote a text about tube vs solid state amps complete with real life anecdotes. I finished the forward but realized it needed an editor, table of contents, chapters and a literary agent. So I deleted it.

Here's everything you ever wanted to know about that topic but never cared to ask.

Mentioned within is the sort of legendary Marantz 7 preamp, 8 stereo amp, and 9 mono block amps; and how VAC has cloned them for exorbitant prices (20k and up). My new tube amps (bought used) are also clones of those mono blocks. Clones of the model 7 preamp have been Chi-Fi'd for years, and I'll do one this Spring sometime starting from just the printed circuit board. They're $20, but the project can get as expensive as you like. $300 should do the trick with reasonably high end components for me. My experience with tubes v solid state is near identical to the author's.

I've built two amps from scratch. Both Nelson Pass designs (he's a big deal in this world). Both Amp Camp group buys to lower the price with a volume purchase. I've also restored two vintage tube amps pulled from early and late 60s stereo consoles. I link to that one because for $100 I may go get it tomorrow. It's pick up only and I'll be in LA tonight. In awful condition it's worth 3-4 hundred bucks. She says it's in perfect condition. To my ears the restored tube amps sound better than the Pass amps and nearly as nice as the Marantz 9 clones.

Oof, I really can't help myself. Maybe I've been a mostly silent reader at diyaudio so long I need to go on about it somewhere. Those dudes are so much smarter than me, so sciency in their approach, I just wait until an idea is fully vetted and approved, then get to following the build instructions. Dozen of ideas start by some guy with a post like Krista's first one in this thread. 2 years and 200 pages later, the smart guys are all in agreement and away the dumb guys go with a project.

This is what Chi-Fi has to do with all this. That's a clone of a clone. Oldchen cloned a venerable 60s tube amp and sells it for $300. Owners marvel about it on Youtube. The clone of the Oldchen is $180 delivered. Diyers can't touch this. One of mine is based on the same basic design and the same EL34 tubes. It sounds almost identical to $1500 mono blocks to me.

Here's what caught my eye in the long article above.

Charlie Hansen of acclaimed solid-state audio-equipment manufacturer Ayre Acoustics knows. “If you know how to solder and the basics of electronics,” he says, “you can make a tube amplifier that’s going to sound really, really good, almost guaranteed.”

That's coming from a guy who sells a $200,000 audiophile system. The Chinese certainly know how to solder. They also graduate migratory herds of electrical engineers every year, so they know more than the basics of electronics. That cloned clone is the best thing I've mentioned Chi-Fi posting.
