Single (Named) Lady #12 - Waxahatchee - Lilacs (2020)
Full name: Katie Crutchfield

Waxahatchee is named after a creek in Crutchfield's home town of Birmingham, AL. She formed the solo project after the disbandment of P.S. Eliot, a band she played in with her twin sister Allison. Katie has gone on to release six albums so far as Waxahatchee.

"Lilacs" is a song from her fifth album Saint Cloud. It came out five years ago this month during the first few weeks of the pandemic. I found the record's homespun sound and the simple ascending/descending chorus of this song to be comforting in those very weird times.

I wake up feeling nothing, camouflage the wavering sky
I sit at my piano, wander the wild whereby
And the lilacs drink the water, and the lilacs die
And the lilacs drink the water
Marking the slow, slow, slow passing of time

The video is a single shot of dancer Marlee Grace performing a routine inside of Basilica Hudson, a 19th century factory building turned performance space. There are no lilacs to be found anywhere.

Yo Mama – World’s Worst Superheroes

Nowhere Girl - B-Movie

KarmaPolice – songs from artists not on shuke’s list

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

Love and Death (Spotify) - Ebo Taylor (Ghana)

MAC_32 – Songs to play during (and after) a funeral

Sullivan - Caroline's Spine

"Hey Heron" would fit in on an early My Morning Jacket record.
I mentioned in the vocalist thread that I generally don't care for Amos' singing style, but that's not an issue on "Sleeps With Butterflies." She's restrained and matches the arrangement well.

As for this one:

Anonymous Mystery Theme Dictator - ???

You - Bad Religion

The line "I don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled" has always cracked me up.

11. "Rock N' Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This)" - Handsome Boy Modeling School

I didn't inundate you all with overt and genre-named turntablism or the scratch technique in this countdown, but here's some DJ'ing and sampling from Dan the Automator and Prince Paul (otherwise known as Handsome Boy Modeling School). Prince Paul is a DJ legend and Dan the Automator is famous within the music world for working with Kool Keith (Dr. Octogon) and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (Deltron 3030). It's an interesting track that organizes itself around an organ riff and drum lick from a hippie-looking CCR-esque band called Mount Rushmore and a vocal sample from Stetsasonic. The track features a breakdown with a sample from a Philip Glass vocal arrangement, and what you have as a final song is what I hope was collage art bliss on this track. Peace!

Single (Named) Lady #11 - Brandy feat. Ma$e - "Top of the World" (1998)
Full name: Brandy Rayana Norwood

Brandy was born in Mississippi but her family moved to the LA area when she was four. She idolized Whitney Houston as a child and emulated her performing in local talent shows. This led to a record deal and a supporting role on the mononymous TV show Thea at the tender age of 14. Her career took off like a rocket with her self-titled debut album going 4x platinum. She also got a starring role in another mononymous sitcom Moesha in 1996 and a plum role in the Disney remake of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, where Brandy got to perform alongside her idol Whitney Houston. The late 90s was a golden age for single named ladies and Brandy was one of the biggest.

"Top of the World" was the second single off her second album Never Say Never. Commercially it was a bit of a letdown after her duet with fellow single named lady Monica "The Boy Is Mine" went to #1 on the pop charts all around the world. "Top of the World" has a harder R&B edge courtesy of producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. The rap intro by Diddy hypeman Ma$e doesn't add much to the song but it sets the stage for Brandy's soulful alto over Darkchild's minimal beats. Brandy does a bit of call and response with her multtracked self on the chorus along with some cool stuttering stops and starts.

The video alternates between Brandy dancing with her crew and images of her floating in the air and flipping on telephone poles. She's just the picture of wide-eyed cuteness

A little later than usual but still technically new. Here are MADs adjacent albums for the week.

Acoustic Isbell but you probably already know about this

Hamilton Leithauser of The Walkmen

Heartbreaker solo Benmont Tench includes a song called "Dallas"

Bob sounding more Sugary than Huskerish

Single named lady of the week

Jim's boy

Remasters of Gary Numan 84-94 albums

New Tull. You're on your own with this one

My pick to click is the second album from Welsh band The Tubs. Their debut was one of my faves of 2023. I described then as Richard Thompson fronting Buzzcocks. This one seems a little more folky than punky on first listen but it's wonderfully melodic and energetic.

Enjoying this!!

Oh yeah, Lady Gaga too

New album dropped the seventh and she was on SNL the eighth. That's modern stardom right there. The skit with Lord Gaga on the SNL news desk was actually really pretty funny and SNL doesn't exactly do it for me anymore (I was a captive audience, really).

If only she were a mononym

What if she were Mrs. Gaga or Ms. Gaga (that's Ms. to you—it's Mrs. only if you're nasty) or Mademoiselle Gaga? Would she have qualified?

eta* I have to point out that is a Janet reference that I threw in there for some unknown reason. Janet Jackson, that is, who might or might not qualify for having a mononym.

I explained all this in too much detail 70 pages ago.

10. Personality Crisis
Artist: New York Dolls
Album: New York Dolls (1973)
Todd's role(s): producer, piano
Writer(s): David Johansen and Johnny Thunders

The song: As side 1, track 1 of New York Dolls' Todd Rundgren-produced, self-titled debut album, "Personality Crisis" was the perfect way to introduce the band to the world outside of the few people that had seen and been captivated by their live show. Today we call it proto-punk, but most people at the time had no idea what to call it.

"Anarchy" is as good a description as any. There are obviously similarities to the Rolling Stones' fastest songs, but the band's performance is even more unrefined than that and takes everything to 11, especially David Johansen's vocal. (During recording, Johansen asked Rundgren if his vocal sounded "ludicrous enough.") It belongs to one of my favorite categories of songs, those that build up so much momentum that they sound like they're going to go off the rails at any second, but don't (just barely, in this case).

Much ink has been spilled over the years pondering what the lyrics are about, but to me it seems to be about someone who is so caught up in keeping up with trends that they lose their own identity.

Rundgren played some of the pounding piano parts on this song; the other parts were played by guitarist Sylvain Sylvain. The tune was released as a double A-side with "Trash" and did not chart.

"Personality Crisis" appeared on what krista calls "The Rolling Stone Garbage List" of 500 greatest songs in 2004 and 2010, but not on its pandemic-era list that we did a draft from. It is by far the band's most-streamed track on Spotify.

Rundgren covered this song on the (re)Production album. https://open.spotify.com/track/04fXfcaM3GMPutFgZWCeaD?si=f81b3a8b869b477f

The album: The cultural significance and commercial failure of this album has been written about extensively, so I'm mostly just gonna stick to discussing Todd's role.

The story goes that David Johansen fell asleep during a meeting with Mercury Records executives about producer possibilities for their first album, and woke up when Rundgren's name was mentioned. While his own music was nothing like the Dolls', he had come to some of their shows at Max's Kansas City and the band knew he was familiar with their work. Johansen: "[Other producers] were afraid of us, I don't know why, but Todd wasn't. We all liked him from Max's ... Todd was cool and he was a producer." Sylvain: "Todd was in New York and seemed like he could handle the pace."

Rundgren and the band had a short time and not much of a budget to get the album done, and were booked in a studio that Rundgren felt had inferior sound. But he felt the bigger impediments were that "The Dolls were critics' darlings and the press had kind of adopted them. Plus, there were lots of extra people around, socializing, which made it hard to concentrate." At one point, Rundgren bellowed at the band to "get the glitter out of your asses and play."

But despite the limitations of the studio and the circus around the band, the experience of recording the album is mostly remembered fondly. Despite not being particularly fond of the band's sound or talents, Rundgren was pretty hands-off by his standards. He let the band pick the tracks to record (which were mostly selected based on how well they went over in the live set) and allowed them to try the first take the way they wanted, offering suggestions after that. He did spend a good amount of time with drummer Jerry Nolan, who had problems keeping the beat at times. Mercury publicist Bud Scoppa: "Todd was such a 'musician' while they were just getting by on attitude and energy. But as disdainful as he appeared to be at some points, he got the job done really well."

The mixing of the album was done quickly and Rundgren tried to ban the band from the process because he felt they were distracted. Guitarist Johnny Thunders complained about the mix to the music press, but Johansen said the mix gives equal weight to every instrument and Sylvain said it accurately captures the band's live sound.

The record reached #116 on Billboard's album charts and, in a sign of how polarizing it was, Creem's readers voted New York Dolls both the best and worst new band of 1973. Of course, once punk happened, it became clear just how important this record was. It appears in the book 101 Albums That Changed Popular Music and on The Guardian's list of 1001 albums you must hear before you die.

New York Dolls are one of the few acts for which Rundgren has produced more than one album. Their 2009 reunion album Cuz I Sez So, which featured only Johansen and Sylvain from the original lineup (Thunders, Nolan and bassist Arthur Kane had all passed away by that point), was the last outside production job Rundgren ever took, and was recorded at his studio in Hawaii.

You Might Also Like: Album closer "Jet Boy" is the perfect opposite bookend to "Personality Crisis". It sounds like girl-group music crossed with boogie rock crossed with meth. https://open.spotify.com/track/7h72gwGqjwnJC83qCja93c?si=b98675d3e44d41fa

krista4 – Chicagoland

Pulaski at Night – Andrew Bird

Artist connection to Chicago (1-5 scale): 5 - Of course. Backinnaday (did I do that right, wikkid?), he smoked pot on my roofdeck.
Song connection to Chicago (1-10 scale): 6 - There are a lot of things named after Pulaski in Chicago, but Bird has explained that this song is about the street, and a Thai exchange student that said he wanted to see Pulaski at night, which Bird found lyrical. Pulaski isn't something you'd want to see during the day, let alone at night, but somehow Bird made it beautiful in this song.

Theme: 31 Best Albums of 1984

11 .Touch by Touch by Diana Ross

Album: Swept Away
Released: September 13

The 15th and last big Ross studio album of the 80s in America. Missing You would be her last top 10 US hit. She remained a much bigger draw overseas than in the US as the 80s went on. To me, Swept Away marks a transition as a younger, new generation of female pop stars would take over the torch. But more on that later.

Ross is still going strong. At age 80 she just performed two sold out shows in Brooklyn last weekend. There she said she would never ever retire. She’s got a European tour planned as well.

My favorite from this album is Touch by Touch. No idea why it was never release in the US as a single. I love the Caribbean accents to it.

Here Comes the Rain Again – Eurythmics
I found this interpretation on songmeanings.com and I think it's a good one:
This song is very artistic and sad. It's beautiful how each beat and sound in the background is like raindrops. Each tap on the keyboard or pluck of a violin has a rhythm matching rainfall and never gets repetitive. This song is really deep and can connect with life really easily. I love the phrase, "here comes the rain again" because it gives you that sense of repetition that she feels, yet you know no matter how many times the rain comes, the pain never eases away. Just beautiful.

I want to walk in the open wind
I want to talk like lovers do
I want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you?

-OZ- - song / music moments from the Marvel cinematic universe

Holding Out for a Hero - Bonnie Tyler

Shrek did it better
Although, Loki is pretty great.

Really just a classic song, upbeat for when one needs some extra motivation.

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods? 🤔

Where's the streetwise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night, I toss and I turn
And I dream of what I need
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong, and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure, and it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life
Larger than life
Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere, just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder
And rising with the heat
It's gonna take a Superman (wrong franchise) to sweep me off my feet, yeah

Next up - possibly the most fitting song 🙊

The original of "Alabama" did not make my top 204 Neil songs because lyrically it's a clumsy rehash of "Southern Man" (and it, not "Southern Man," was the song Skynyrd were railing against in "Sweet Home Alabama"), but it's got great guitar parts that Derek Trucks tears into.
"On & On" feels like melodic shoegaze. Always down for that.

Like #17, this list was packed with known-to-me favorites and the many excellent new-to-me songs make it one of the best playlists so far IMO.

Of course. Backinnaday (did I do that right, wikkid?), he smoked pot on my roofdeck.

Wait, what?

Chicago, mid-to-late 90s. Andrew Bird had put out one record, "Music of Hair," and was starting to pop up at shows (see Schubas, which I discussed in connection with my #17). He'd duet with friends of mine or be part of a larger band, and then he formed Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, which one of my friends was a member of. He was always just around, as part of the scene at the time. I lived in a kickass place from 1998-2000 where people would come for parties. Since he was always around, he'd show up on rare occasion and just head to my rooftop and smoke pot.

World’s Worst Superheroes #10

Lonely Boy

Artist - The Black Keys (2011)

Strengths - Can survive in relative solitude on just Doritos and Mountain Dew Code Red; he and his army of online friends can use anonymous harassment campaigns against female celebrities or beer companies to great effect; saving all kinds of rent money by living in his parents’ basement

Weaknesses - In-person interactions; problematic social media history; society is actively working to keep him down

There Goes My Hero

Situation
- Your 11-year old kid loves playing Call of Duty. He’s gotten so good at it that he’s totally bored playing multiplayer against you since your CoD skills are extremely limited. He’s been bugging you for weeks to let him play against people online, so you and your wife decide to let him as long as you are there to keep an eye on things. Your son connects to a battle online for the first time as you watch:

[LonelyBoy6969 enters the game]

Your son: [into headset] “I’m not a n00b, you’re a n00b!” [to you] “Hey Dad, what is a (R-word)? And what’s a (F-word gay slur)?”

You: “Whoa, we don’t use those words! Maybe this isn’t the best idea.”

Your son: “These are my friends, dad! That’s just how they talk.” [into headset] “Tom Hanks drinks the blood of babies? Woody from Toy Story? . . Oh OK, I’ll see you later.” [to you] “Lonely Boy’s mom said he had to leave.”

[LonelyBoy6969 exits the game]

You: “That’s probably a good idea - don’t you have homework to do? How old is Lonely Boy anyway? 15?”

Your son: “I think he said he’s 31.”

Your son: “Dad, am I vaccinated? Does that mean I’m artistic?”

You: “Ummmm. . . “

Your son: “Hey dad, who is George Soros?”

You: [forcefully yanks XBox plug from wall] “Yeah, we’re done here!”

jwb – songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system

Small Poppies – Courtney Barnett

My only post-2000 song on the list. But it's a good one.

I found this song (and Courtney) when looking for good audiophile songs a few years ago. And yes, it's excellent - similar to the SVR song in that it sounds really "deep" on the soundstage. But I really like her voice, and how her tone/inflection slightly change depending on what she's saying. And the guitar tone - it's so good. Stick with it, as the song becomes a real banger towards the end. I've become a fan of hers - I like her somewhat witty, millennial-inspired lyrics and her guitar. Got a bit of a coffeehouse thing going on, which is usually not my thing but I'll make an exception here.

I had a couple other things in my initial notes that I decided to leave out since it probably crossed the no politics line

Good call. As the father of one of these, I can confirm they're less flexible about things they don't really know about than some of the folks that got the PSF shut down.
