Let The Train Blow the Whistle - Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash wrote this song for his 1994 album American Recordings. 🚂 For J...

I don't want no aggravation
When my train has left the station
If you're there or not, I may not even know
Have a round and remember
Things we did that weren't so tender
Let the train blow the whistle when I go
Train songs have always been some of my favorites.

One more train song for the road ahead:

There might be a party train whenever we do the next MAD artist round. All aboard…

Google sheet
Add 'em if ya got 'em.

And thank you for setting up and compiling this stuff. There were some interesting playlists on that spreadsheet, and I look forward to maybe giving one or two a spin in the near future.

eta* posted my link on the sheet, and I'll post one here for ease (if by some blessed occurrence somebody wants to listen, I'll make it as easy as possible). I love the Spotify thumbnail feature that our board has for links. I like the artistry of it. I got excited when I figured out how to embed, but it didn't work for this particular board. That's a bridge too far I guess.

#, Please # 1
Song: 3s & 7s
Artist: Queens of the Stone Age

Year: 2007

(Official Music Video) Queens Of The Stone Age - 3's & 7's (Official Music Video)
(Live version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4QKlHuvM0o

4 Lines:
Keep going over and over again
The never ending places I've never been
No one's catching on
Callin' my bluff

Number Theory:

You don’t have to be Zegras to know that in Texas Hold-em, having a 3 & 7 as your cards is a pretty bad hand. Two pairs (since the title’s 3s & 7s, plural) however is decently better. Not great by any means, but you can at least win with it. Though getting the pot is still more likely to happen through bluffing.

Deception. Lying. That’s what this song’s about. Heck, I barely need to tell you that, considering the first line is “Lie, Lie to my face”. Not to mention the bit about “callin’ my bluff” that I included above. One might even suggest that this song doesn’t have much a poker face when it comes to its intentions.

For the #1 slot I considered some other options. Iron Maiden’s “2 Minutes to Midnight” that showed up earlier was one. There was at least one draft where MC Hammer’s “2 Legit to Quit” might have been here. There wasn’t anything starting with “1” that lept out at me. Or maybe it was the thought that the best “One” songs spell it out. Besides, 3 is a Magic Number, so that's as good a spot to end as any, right?

Significant Digits:
Off album#: 5
Track: 8
Ranked #12 in titusbramble’s Josh Homme M-AD Countdown
Charted #1 UK Rock and Metal, #2 in Scotland, & #25 on US Alternative Airplay

Artist crossover with other playlists: 35
Prince (6 times) firmly in the lead. Springsteen & Queen tied at 4. Van Halen & The Rolling Stones tied at 3. Skid Row’s full crossover #1 in our hearts.

Thanks for following along in this whatever this was. I sincerely appreciate the comments along the way, including some alternative suggestions and/or songs that didn’t make the cut. Some of those I included in my playlist. Which, of course, still counts down, with everything mixed together. But that's a different post.

I also had Tool on the playlist. As I posted earlier, I wasn't sure about what I had first, but I think it was Undertow. Since I was already cheating by using '93 I stuck with that and put Crawl Away on the playlist. I've been a fan since HS, but I listen mostly to Lateralus on. I never listen to Aenima because of the weird skits, so I don't seem to go back to Undertow enough either. On a couple recent listens I was reminded how good the back half of that album is.

This reads like a Mad Lib

First song to come to mind when I think "new wave." Would have been my #1 w/o the frat ref I've posted about Valley Girls

"I Melt with You" is a song by the British new wave band Modern English. The song, produced by Hugh Jones, was the second single from their 1982 album After the Snow. It became the band's most successful single, largely in the United States, where it was featured in the film Valley Girl and on MTV. It reached number seven on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart in 1983 and a re-release reached number 76 on its Hot 100 chart in 1990 (after reaching number 78 in 1983).

Moving forwards using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world crashing all around your face (let me hear you)
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace (come on)
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference, and it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
Trapped in a state of imaginary grace
I made a pilgrimage to save this human race
Never comprehending the race has long gone by (come on)
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference, and it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
The future's open wide
I'll stop the world and melt with you
I've seen some changes, but it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you (yeah)
The future's open wide
(Sing along, listen up)
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Pathetic
Absolutely pathetic
Oh, oh, oh
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference, and it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
I'll stop the world and melt with you
I'll stop the world and melt with you
I just wanna melt with you lovelies tonight

Single (Named) Lady #1 - Solange - "Cranes in the Sky" (2016)
Full name: Solange Piaget Knowles

Solange was born five years after her sister Beyonce and was a teenager when Destiny's Child broke big. Solange served as a backup dancer for the group and stepped in to sing when Kelly Rowland broke a toe. Her family connections were undoubtedly an asset to her early solo career. 16 year old Solange wasn't lacking in confidence when she named her debut album Solo Star. She had a few hits on the Dance charts but didn't hit her artistic stride big until fourteen years later with her third album A Seat at the Table. It wasn't the most direct route to stardom but when it happened, it happened on Solange's terms. It's a record that defies the conventions of R&B and Pop and is one of my favorite albums of the century.

So why put her at #1? Well, I'm a second child and I'm married to one as well so I can relate to Solange. It must have been extra difficult when your big sister is Beyonce so I'm putting daughter #2 to the head of the line for once. In retrospect, I probably should have but the Cher song at #1 but this would be still be ahead of Beyonce. This countdown has been light on artists I've seen live. The previous three have all come with asterisks: Pink at a hoops halftime show, Odetta with my parents when I was little and Ledisi playing board games with my kids. I saw Solange at the Greek in Berkeley in 2017. The problem was we had tickets for Sparks' late set on our side of the Bay the same night. We accepted the booking conflict knowingly thinking it would be a fun night. Fate thumbed its nose when Mrs Eephus ruptured her Achilles a few months before the show. She's a gamer when it's someone she wants to see so we made it to both shows. But nowadays we probably would have put the tickets for one of the shows up for sale :bag:

"Cranes in the Sky" is a song about avoiding the pain of a failed relationship. The song has a spacious, chilled ambiance with the vocals of Solange and her chorus floating above a stripped down snare and a very deep bassline. The video features the artist looking directly at the camera in a variety of settings and about 20 costume changes.

I'm always curious about front to back covers of full albums so my first full listen of the week was

Branford Marsalis and his quartet cover Keith Jarrett's 1974 album in its entirety. @wikkidpissah was a huge fan of Jarrett and like Dale, the pianist is best known as an improviser but he's a fine composer as well. Marsalis and his working group stretch the original 46 minute album to over an hour so there are a lot of notes. Marsalis and drummer Justin Faulkner are probably more technically proficient than their counterparts in Jarrett's European Quartet but Jarrett has an inimitable style.

Jarrett has a bit of a reputation as being austere perfectionist but Belonging is very melodic and quite accessible. Branford's homage is too; it's very listenable but I prefer the original. Dale would have probably hated it lol.

Uncanny timing for a post.

ditkaburgers - Girl Groups X Boy Bands #1

Walking in the WindOne DirectionBoy BandLondon, EnglandI tried to pull from groups I haven't mentioned before, but in light of the news at the end of last year, I could not include One Direction. This song holds an entirely different meaning and it's heartbreaking. RIP Liam Payne

Song has a bit of a Graceland vibe to it before the bridge goes all anthemic.

-OZ- - song / music moments from the Marvel cinematic universe

I Was Made For Lovin' You - KISS
I have no idea what’s happening in this Scooby doo video (please Scooby Doo this crap) but it’s awesome and irrelevant to the inclusion here.

This comes from a what if episode this past December, in which everyone’s favorite fowl mouth develops a relationship with our favorite intern, Darcey, played by the equally vivacious Kat dennings.

Wholesome moment
Does anyone want to know how She gave birth to an egg?
“Parents are the greatest heroes of all”

I hate KISS as a musical band, but love them as a concept. However, I really like this song. Its video is also the source of one of the best "shreds" videos ever.

krista4 – Chicagoland

Far, Far Away – Wilco

Score: 100

Is "Far, Far Away" by Wilco really the most Chicago-y song? Of course not. But I couldn't have something about Lincoln Towing Service be my #1, so I made the call to move Wilco up and give them a lifetime achievement award. I chose "Far, Far Away" over "Via Chicago" in terms of songs mentioning Chicago, because the latter (deservedly) gets selected here a lot so I wanted to highlight this beauty instead.

In addition to the various Chicago songs, the Wilco Towers on the cover of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and this wonderful real-Chicago-centric video for Everyone Hides, it seems that Jeff Tweedy is everywhere I go these days, so I consider him the Chicago-y-est person on the planet right now.
I am staying right next to the Wilco towers. I may or may not have picked this hotel for that reason.

#1: OPETH - THE DEVIL' S ORCHARD

I wanted something that would hopefully grab everybody's attention. This one is a staple in their live shows - @MrsKarmaPolice got to see it live last year. This was the start of Opeth's clean vocals run of albums and the album that pissed off a lot of fans. I think it shows off their skills quite well - as usual, I really like the drumming here. They have new drummer who is also fantastic, and this is the song that they auditioned him with. They knew he could play heavy stuff that leans death metal, but since they play this at most shows they wanted to make sure he could get this side of their music as well. I also liked having this song on here because Heritage is an album I really fell for over the past year or so as I revisited albums and songs I hadn't gotten to for a while, and that is largely thanks to you all and these weird music threads. It also is an album that came to mind in the discussions with @jwb and @Eephus as to what sounds great to our ears. Much of what I love about this band is their attention to albums as how you consume music and the sound of their albums and shows. My wife can verify, but I have never heard anything like them live. Usually shows sound to me like a wall of noise - a bit too loud and I have trouble hearing words and individual musicians. The 2 times I saw Opeth I felt like I could hear every note and word, and they sound great live.

After reading a book about them, and watching countless interviews now I would describe them as a 70s prog band that took over a Swedish death metal band. They have growls at the start, and I get that would irritate some. Frankly, I fell for these guys despite the growls. I remember hearing a song and really not liking it. Good thing I gave them another shot. From their debut through their 9th album Watershed, most have a combination of growls and non-growls. The exception is the Damnation album. After that there is a 4 album run of all clean vocals. I am confident that anybody who liked the playlist song or anything they click below will like a couple of those albums, or at least a few songs. Their newest albums re-introduced their growls. So they have 14 albums total - 5 totally clean vocals, 9 with some level of growls and not. For me there is not a bad song or album. I have listened to all front back and sideways and they bat 1.000, even b-sides and covers. They have become my favorite band and a go-to for most my moods, and think their music is downright beautiful at times. I'll throw out a few songs and facts, but if at all interested, I would give a full album a try. That's how they should be listened to.

Recommended Listening: My personal favorite albums with clean vocals would be Pale Communion and Heritage. I like the heavy keyboard sound of Pale Communion, and I fell for Heritage which is their proggiest album. Damnation is also great and a more straight forward slow album. As for those who might be growl-curious, my personal favorite albums are Still Life, Watershed, and The Last Will and Testament. Blackwater Park is an album I would also suggest to people as a starting point. The growls are probably the least harsh there. Most of the songs I list below were ones that I rediscovered as I dug through their music.

Two more from Heritage here that became favorites. Haxprocess shows off the prog side. I love the way that sounds in the headphones, especially the eerie guitar at the end. Anybody who liked that should check out even proggier Famine and Folklore from the same album. The Lines In My Hand is probably my favorite of their shorter rockers. Again, love the drumming here. According to Michael after they did Watershed they felt like they did all they could with the growls. At one point he did hand the bassist some music, but it was basically Watershed 2.0 and they were disappointed in that direction and it wasn't in Michael's heart. This song was the first song that was written for what became Heritage and started the new era.

Faith in Others is one of the songs I would describe as beautiful. They have another song, Burden, that usually gets the praise but I grew to love this one over the last year. I just stumbled on an interview with Micheal and he talked about the song. He is usually overly critical about their music and jokes that lyrics are **** in interviews. For this one, he said this one was their one perfect song.

The Moor is the album opener to Still Life. Here we have a concept album about a banished heretic returning to town for an old flame. Or something like that. It's been one of my favorites since I bought it as I got into them. I am pretty sure this and Morningrise were the last 2 albums I bought from The Exclusive Company. It showcases some of their heavier music and growls, but there are songs in there as beautiful as the above ones, like Benighted.

Heir Apparent is the 2nd song off Watershed after the acoustic opener. This is another has been a personal favorite since first listening. Watershed was the first album that came out as a new release after I first started getting into them. They describe it as their peak of what they thought they could do with the growls, which was a reason other albums that sounded like it didn't feel right to them. Hessian Peel is top 5 song for me and is an air drum favorite in the car. This was always in the CD player of my last car.

I have listened to this album countless times since it came out at the end of November. The production got delayed, and it was supposed to come out the day that we saw them in Milwaukee. I think this might be their best album. They went back to the growls and concept album. Micheal said he was watching too much Succession, and this album is framed as siblings sitting down to hear the will of the family patriarch. Most of the songs don't have titles - they are Paragraphs 1-7 and then a slow closer at the end that wraps up the story. S1 is of course the album opener, and this was the first single released. The album version is a little longer and flows into the next song. S3-S6 might be the best stretch of music in their catalogue and S6 is about as good as metal gets to my ears. It sounds so good as the voices float around and sometimes feel like they are right behind you. They describe this album as claustrophobic, and I think that is a good description. IF anybody hesitant wants to try some growls, I would actually start here. IMO they are easier to digest when they are part of a story and become a character like on this album. The sound is fantastic, and the songs are shorter too. It's one of the best metal albums I've ever listened to.

Lastly, as a nod to @shuke for putting up with my b.s and to my fellow MAD31ers, I will highly suggest a cover of a song I saw on his list. This one is a B-side on the special edition of Watershed. I hope he and y'all at least got a few new songs you liked from my playlist.

KarmaPolice – songs from artists not on shuke’s list

Assuming I did not miss any of these in @shuke 's list, here is a list of 33 songs by artists not on his list just from one of my favorite playlists on my computer (in alphabetical order, not ranked order):
  1. Acceptance - Different
  2. Agents of Good Roots - Upspin
  3. The All American Rejects - It Ends Tonight
  4. Ambassadors - Litost
  5. Aqualung - Brighter Than Sunshine
  6. Atlas Genius - Trojans
  7. Augustana - Boston
  8. Better Than Ezra - A Lifetime
  9. Bush - Letting the Cables Sleep

  14. Fuel - Shimmer
  15. Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know
  16. Howie Day - Collide
  17. Imagine Dragons - It's Time
  18. Jimmy Eat World - Drugs or Me
  19. Lifehouse - Simon
  20. Live - They Stood Up For Love
  21. M83 - Midnight City
  22. Oleander - Halo
  23. Our Lady Peace - Somewhere Out There
  24. Pillar - Rewind
  25. Saliva - Always
  26. Seether - Broken (IMO best version is with Amy Lee)

  30. Staind - It's Been Awhile
  31. Third Eye Blind - Bonfire
  32. Train - Get to Me
  33. Vertical Horizon - Underwater
For me, that is a great playlist. I believe your list in this countdown contained a Better Than Ezra song, but I don't think you had any of the rest of these artists. I think @shuke rejected a few of these artists as not being good enough for his list, which was obviously the wrong choice.

simey – train songs

@simey, when I first read your theme, the first song I thought of was this one, which did not make your playlist: You Never Even Called Me By My Name. Here is the relevant part:

Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
And he told me it was the perfect country & western song
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country & western song
Because he hadn't said anything at all about mama
Or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting' drunk
Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to me
And after reading it I realized that my friend had written the perfect country & western song
And I felt obliged to include it on this album
The last verse goes like this here

Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run over by a damned old train

:-)

Did you ever visit ECU/Greenville when you were at NCSU? A bar called Grog's used to play that song at the end of every night to signal the bar was closing right after the song. I was at ECU from 84 to 90, and I think Grog's changed to something else in 1988 or 89.

Huge thanks to @KarmaPolice for all the playlists (and the reminders when I forgot to send him the selections)! Great partnership on this. :) And equally as huge thanks to @titusbramble for the mystery-themed list. That was entirely his idea, and he reached out to me to see if I thought it would be fun, which I mistakenly did. It was so generous of him to spend the time on that.

I have a Chicagoland playlist but want to add some "last out" tracks and bonus tracks on there, since I see others have. I'll post it later today.

:-)
He’s got Soundgarden in there (The Day I Tried to Live). Not until the 1100s, but it’s there.

I see now that I saw him post in that thread that the song was in his last out at one point so I either misinterprted that or just missed that it was included later. But that's why I included 33 on my list, to give myself a small margin for error.

Did you ever visit ECU/Greenville when you were at NCSU? A bar called Grog's used to play that song at the end of every night to signal the bar was closing right after the song. I was at ECU from 84 to 90, and I think Grog's changed to something else in 1988 or 89.

I did visit once but don't have much clear memory of the visit. :banned:

Mrs. Rannous – umlauts

(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult

KarmaPolice – songs from artists not on shuke’s list

The Devil's Orchard - Opeth

Back to back creepiest songs ever on one of these things?
I almost picked Joan Crawford. Way creepier.
Exhibit C for the BOC:

One of my favorite love songs.

Probably also that of Daniel Day-Lewis

I knew it was going to be about feet. Freaking Rex.

Let’s go get a ****in’ snack!

krista4 – Chicagoland

How Chicago is Jeff Tweedy? He fired Ken Coomer because he wouldn’t move to Chicago.
