Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 3 - #1's have been posted! (1 Viewer)

Shellac - Girl from Outside
I think my college-aged mind would have been blown by this one; middle-aged me likes the intensity of the tune but is afraid to turn it up enough to follow the lyrics. Against my better judgement and a nod to who I used to be, I have added it to my favorites.

Got to the first playlist and of course there’s songs I’m very familiar with from bands I love like The Beach Boys, Mayfield and The Doors but the new to me songs I especially enjoyed were

Oingo Boingo- my god it’s so 80s, it’s just perfect

Mazzy Star and The Cure- ok sort of a cheat, I really like both these artists but maybe never dug deep enough into their catalog. Both these were great.

Stray Cats and Judas Priest- they share the award for songs I was prepared not to like but actually really enjoyed

CHVRCHES- I guess this wins best podcast award lol, great cover

Iron and Wine- I wonder how I would do with a whole playlist of theirs but them popping up in the mix here is probably always going to work for me, so serene

Username FINALLY checks out. ;)
How do we know he's not referring to octogenarians?
I suppose it does refer to 80s pop culture more than anything but it really was an inside joke that stuck. Back in the days of free AOL discs that would give you like 100 free hours of internet and then you had to start over with a new account, one of my friends and fellow 8th or 9th graders made an account Ilovl80s (ladies, right?) and was trying to go to chat rooms to hit on grown women thinking he could get naked pix from them. We made fun of him and tried to tell him those were all certainly just guys he was talking to and the naked pictures were just random pix from porn mags. He was such an *** though so to mess with him, we created accounts like "Ilovr8bies", Ilovmerc80s", etc. and we would find the chat rooms he was in and totally mess with him. I made Ilov80s and it just so happened that with this disc and name my parents decided that the internet was worthwhile and they would pay to keep it. So the name stuck.

Chvrches

#30 - The Mother We Share

Producer - Iain Cook/Chvrches
Writer - Chvrches
Album - The Bones of What You Believe
Year - 2012
Notes - Their official debut single and it may be their most well known song. It has the third most youtube views of their material behind 3 versions of Here With Me and Leave a Trace. It has by far the second most Spotify listens behind Here With Me.

But I don’t like it. It’s fine I guess, but it lacks the hooks and booming synths that I love about this band. Other opinions are available.

Like:
Pitchfork ranked it number 191 on their list of the top 200 tracks of the 2010s so far in 2014.

Michael Cragg of The Guardian gave the song a positive review, while noting the mood differences between the song and a previous Chvrches track, "Lies". He wrote that the song "tempers the monster synth riffs in favour of twinkling keyboards, padded drum claps and a central lyric that lends the whole thing a slightly melancholic edge."

The song was also used in the soundtrack of the 2014 racing video game Forza Horizon 2, in the radio station Horizon Pulse.

As we will see, the band have several tie-ins with video games down the line.

Next Up we go with a track that was used on a movie soundtrack. Lorde picked the band personally to contribute

I listened to the #30 playlist.

Besides my own song, I already knew I liked these songs:
  • Stone Temple Pilots - Big Bang Baby
  • Judas Priest - Turbo Lover
  • Cure - Purple Haze
    • I love this song and used it in the covers countdown. I would have probably had this in my top 10 if I had the Cure as my artist.
  • Beach Boys - Help Me, Rhonda
Of the songs previously unknown to me, I liked these the best:
  • Blue October - Schizophrenia
    • 2 for 2 for me so far
  • The Tea Party - Temptation
    • 2 for 2 for me so far
  • The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - Tink (I Know It's You)
  • The Brian Setzer Orchestra - One More Night With You
I enjoyed this one as much as the #31 list. Nicely done, everyone.

Puppy nap= I go for a walk and get in the Mad playlist round 2. I liked this one a lot. I liked almost too much to even comment on it all.

But first, I realize that because the CHVRHCES song on MAD 31 was a podcast, it looked in my app like it was the end of the list. So I went back and finished the playlist. So happy someone is taking on Earth, Wind and Fire. They were one of the 2 or 3 artists I was considering. Can't Let Go is a damn nice way to start them off.

Ok round 2 artists I espcially wanted to call out

Blue October- immediately liked it and it caught me off guard because I remember the first BO song being much different
Oingo Boingo- Another song that sounds totally different than the 1st but I am still digging it
The Slambovian Circus of Dream- I literally know nothing about this band, never even heard of him but they got my attention here
Moody Blues-great song, haven't heard this in a long time but I am glad that was remedied here
The Impressions- I will have to resist from saying something positive about every Mayfield song
Strand of Oaks- giving me that Springsteen vibe that I love
Dave Matthews- hate to say I enjoyed this, but I really did
Mazzy- see my comments on Mayfield
Susanna Hoffs- not at all what I expected a Hoffs song to sound like, love all the surprises in this playlist
Iron and Wine- wait, they are doing a Highway 61 Revisisted sound? Iron and Wine? How fun!

Oh and I liked the Bryan Ferry song too. Great round overall.

It is very rare for me to fall for a song due to its chorus. My music listening tendencies typically require more, but while the riff is catchy Kenny Chesney - Few Good Stories is all about the hook. It's one of many from his most recent album to make my 31 and it may be too early to say but cover-to-cover it's his best effort I've been exposed to. We do walk-up music at our weekly golf league and the chorus + a riff is mine for summer '24. It took a couple rounds, but it garnered some attention and this album is now spreading through another friend group as well. My wife and I have been sprinkling it in with as many bubbles as we can and consistently receive positive feedback. This track is also our youngest's favorite- any time it kicked on June's road trip, instant smile and head bops over the next ~2 1/2 mins from the back seat:

If I ain't done it all, just means I ain't done it yet
When I look back, I don't want to have one single regret
I'm gonna

Soak up the sun, keep the wind in my sails
Try to get to heaven while I raise a little hell
When it's all said and done, I'll know I lived it well
If I ain't got nothing but a few good stories to tell

Another MAD playlist, another great mix of music. A few random thoughts/callouts. Again, a reminder that I have liked all the artists on the playlist.

Like 80s posted with a couple artists, I'll first give a shoutout to @zamboni . Pre-Mad31 Part 3, I would say that I "get" The Beach Boys even less than I do The Beatles. BUT, I really dug the song on the 31s and Help Me Rhonda is great as well.

In a similar note - @simey you are also 2 for 2, just not quite as strongly so. That said, the fact that you and others are breaking down my anti country/twang stance speaks volumes for what we are doing here. On a sad note, this one hit me a little bit because we are dealing with the impending death of another cat. One of our hairless cats has acute heart failure and probably won't make it to 3 years old, and we have been thinking and talking a bit about the pets that have been in our lives and how we want to have more pictures up in a corner for them. Well, the first dog I remember having a kid my parents named Stoney. I thought it was named after a song. Is there another Stoney, or was it this one?? Regardless love the storytelling with your song selections.

I've like the first Blue October songs, but I am also annoyingly at a loss for who the lead singer reminds me of. It's driving me a bit nuts. Sorry if you posted something in your write-ups, @-OZ- , i plan to read them in the next couple days after hearing a couple songs.

Two of the strongest 2 for 2s for me were from @Eephus and @Ilov80s. Both were big pivots tonally from the #31s, but I still loved both. Another was from the previous mentioned Belle and Sebastian.

On that note, one thing I am horrible at predicting is how many listeners/month artists have. It's been a bit of a focus since I gave myself the stupid 1M or under/month threshold for artists. Mitski's 26M/month shocked me a bit.

Great posting, and this echoes my thoughts. I liked the #31 more, but despite my base anti-country lean, what drew me in here was the chorus.

Apologies if I am way off base, but what I was thinking about while listening was the connection between these couple songs and what I was hearing from the Kid Rock songs during MAD31 Part 2.

I'm sorry one of your cats isn't well. 😿 I don't know any other songs named Stoney. I could write one about you and name it that (instead of Stoner). 😵‍💫 :p

Expecting to like or at least not mind them

Expecting to really like this playlist
Stone Temple Pilots- another known and liked band. Loved these guys when they first came out

Sorry if I thumpered your artist but maybe you can change my mind. I'll pull this up at the end and compare what was expected to how it plays out

We have to put our favorite cat down in the morning 😢 he's sleeping next to me while I've been doing my MAD homework.

Jerry Jeff Walker- never heard of, sounds like a serial killer. Still don't like much country
Not expecting to like much sorry @simey 😔
His name does sound like a serial killer. He is folk just as much as he is country. He can sing a romping honky tonk sounding tune, and then sing a pretty folk song. I'll bet there will be at least one song by him that you like, but it's OK if you don't like any. Just give him a chance.

What if you didn’t even mention my artist? Destroyer doesn’t stand a chance? I’m ****ed. 🤣

On a serious note, I’m sorry to hear about your cat. Always so tough to put down a pet.
Cra! Forgot the last group of artists :bag:
In my defense I'm pretty stoned

Damn stoners.

Expecting something punkish that I'll either love or hate
Andrew Bird - never heard of
Expecting some kind of singer-songwriter stuff I don't usually like
Steve Albini- only know him from these drafts and what OH posted here. Seems to do a lot of different things so expecting to like most of it
Dio- one of my favs
Expecting it to rock my face off way more than Bin Jovi ever could
April Wine- known and like alot. Seen them live a couple times in the 80's
Expecting to really like this playlist

Alright that's everyone! (I hope)

Totally get it. For a very long time, I only knew the BB hits - liked the catchy tunes about cars, girls and surfing, but that’s about it. Then I did some real exploration of their later material and developed a deep appreciation for the band (especially Brian).

Bringing up The Beach Boys and The Beatles together is a nice segue for my next selection. Knowing your taste, it may not resonate as much with you as with Breakaway and Rhonda did, but glad you’re keeping an open mind - hang in there.

The 31's

Medal Stand
Gold Tea Party - Sister Awake, ooooh this might be a spicy one, wasn't prepared for the sudden change 1:50 in then this thing took off from there
Silver The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - The Trans-Slambovian Bipolar Express, I'm a sucker for a good outro and while this one already had me, it finished the job with authority
Bronze Stray Cats - C'mon Everybody, the medal stand for this round was a no doubter and the only way I was able to split this from the others were the tempo changes - they had them and this didn't
Honorable Mention Dio - We Rock, good intro to what will likely be a lot of new hearts, as this is a rocker I just never sought out before

Thanks for bringing it back
Blue October - Hate Me, not sure when I lost track of it but it's back now.

Classics
The Doors - Roadhouse Blues, no gold because I've heard it hundreds of times, but this is ageless
STP - Plush (acoustic), better than the original and probably top 10 for me

Not all of these are gonna hit with you, but I think you're going to be surprised how much of him you enjoy. He's much more trop rock than country, but wasn't marketed that way, which is why it took me so long to give him a shot. Very curious what you think of the next two and no I've not back-loaded this list

I don't have the Lillywhite sessions songs. Is there somewhere I can get them?

f you do, I'd love a copy! I had them on a burned cd, which I uploaded to iTunes. The cd was in a booklet that was stolen mid aughts then my entire iTunes account was corrupted a few years later. A fellow board member zipped me a version when I mentioned them ~covid, but they became greyed out a few weeks / months later. It was nice listening to it even just a few times after not for 10 years even though it may never happen again.
I have a zip file that I've had for a long time called Lillywhite Sessions. I opened it up, and it has 12 songs in Flac. It is The Dave Matthews Band, and The Lillywhite Sessions also say Karmageddon remaster. Anyway, I converted the Flac to MP3, and then zipped it back up. I looked up how to upload a zip file to Google Drive and make a shareable link. Back in the day we used to use Megaupload, and things like that. I don't know if I did this right, and this zip file is what y'all are looking for, but I'll PM it to you and JWB (and whoever else may want it). Tell me if it works and if it is the one.
Last of this evening's hippling - this worked!!! Rather than start the 30's I'm finishing tonight with some Lillywhite. Hopefully this time I don't lose it. Thank you, @simey !!!

Strand of Oaks #30 - "Harder Love" (2018)

One of the things that makes Strand of Oaks interesting to me is Tim's willingness to expose his artistic process, or maybe he's just manifesting his indecisiveness. On top of his eight regular albums, he's released two additional records of alternate versions and tracks that he scrapped during recording plus another disc of acoustic versions of album tracks.

"Harder Love" is the title song of an outtakes album. It's an early version of "Hard Love", the title track of his difficult fifth album. I'll get to Hard Love the album soon enough but "Harder Love" the song has a more direct style and a driving rock rhythm. It never made it past this rough unmastered recording before Strand overthought "Hard Love" the song a bit and moved in a completely different direction with pulsing synths and a couple of tempo changes.

Maybe Tim didn't think "Harder Love" fit the rest of the album or maybe he thought it sounded too much like Springsteen but I think as is, it's better (and harder) than "Hard Love".

Time for the #30s. We’ve gotten a small taste of the artists, and for some, it’s time for something with a bit different flavor to it. Or at least mine. Anyway, semi-selected (keeping it under ½ the songs) and shuffled! Thus adding an old but familiar category. There’s a higher percentage of unknown groups and I’ve been enjoying a lot, so we’ll see if the new discoveries category expands. Certainly, there are bands I’ve liked both songs but haven’t highlighted yet.

Familiar Songs:
Help Me, Rhonda - Beach Boys
The Mother We Share - Chvrches
Little Willy - Sweet
Big Bang Baby - STP

New Discoveries:
Gravedigger - Dave Matthews
Stoney - Jerry Jeff Walker
It’s in Your Heart Now - Destroyer
Your Precious Love - The Impressions (/Curtis Mayfield)
Temptation - The Tea Party
This Could Be the Right One - April Wine

Shuffle Adventures:
Who’d have thought that Susanna Hoff’s Raining into Judas Priest’s classic Turbo Lover into The Cure covering Purple Haze was a vibe?

My sister and BIL left early yesterday to go to the Canadian Rockies and Montana for two weeks. I'm looking after their 5 cats while they are gone. One of the cats, Masie, has been acting weird lately as in hardly eating and acting more skittish than usual. She took Masie to the vet last Monday and they ran lots of tests, and everything came back normal. She has lost a little weight, but she was pudgy, so she doesn't look too thin. Last night she only ate about three bites, so I put up her food, and came back a couple hours later to try again. Same thing, and again this morning, same thing. I'm going over there at lunch today, and I'm going to try some different food. Isolating her from the others will be a challenge, but I'll try different things. If she takes off, I hope she goes into Wheezer's old room, cause that is her "safe spot," and I will put a litter pan in there, and shut her in there so I can leave the food down while I'm gone. We'll see.

Wow, 5 cats. You’re a great sister/SIL.
