#21 WAKE UP (IT'S 1984)

Yep, firmly back in the 80s with the sound of this one and the video is so 80s as well. This one and next Sunday's track are both from Good for Your Soul. It just seems to me that while liking songs off all the albums, this one also seems to be a bit of a transition album. There is still the silly sense of humor in the lyrics, but as you can see with this track they are moving more from their ska/new wave sound into a more 80s synth sound. Danny is also singing more traditionally more often as we go. As they went along, I also think the lyrics aren't quite as dark or biting. As I said on Tues, I think of this one as a more "80s" version of the similar song/themes as Perfect System. For me what sells me on this song is the transition to the group singing when we to the "Open your eyes, sisters and brothers" part of the chorus.

This week we will get our one-off from the only album left that we haven't heard from, a song that wasn't in contention until I heard the live version, and an Elfman diss track?

ETA: I changed the link after seeing it was a fan made video.
This was a fun one. I hadn’t heard this since, oh, probably some time in the early to mid 1980s.

By the way, Maurice White is one of those singers who must have been sick the day his elementary school taught kids how to pronounce the letter "R". Usually, he does the "ah" in place of it (like many singers do). But, here he does something I've never heard (before or since): "sep-tem-BO". And it's not just once!
He might have a common speech impediment called "rhotacism".

Me too, thought it was the Moody Blues at first

Me too, thought it was the Moody Blues at first
And I thought that Kenny Chesney sounded like Justin Hayward in this song. Ya know- with an accent.

Me too, thought it was the Moody Blues at first
Yes - my thoughts exactly!

Ronnie James Dio #21
Artist: Black Sabbath
Song: Master of Insanity
(off Dehumanizer, 1992)

(Youtube version) Master of Insanity - Black Sabbath
(Live Version) Black Sabbath - The Master of Insanity (Brazil 1992)

Your freedom is gone
He's taken everything you ever had
But if you're strong you'll survive
You've got to hold on, open your eyes

A song so nice, some of you heard it twice! For those of you experiencing deja vu, it could be due to the fact that my #22 was supposed to be “Strange Highways”, but I had the wrong link. Oops.

Anyway, while Dehumanizer often gets seen as the weakest of the Black Sabbath albums with Dio, I think the strong points hit hard. What I’m saying is that we’ll see a few more songs from it. This is a very heavy album, with this song giving you a taste of what to expect in theme and musical tone. There’s the sense of a manipulative force (/someone) in the lyrics, a tone of destruction, violence and despair. Geezer and Iommi shine in this song at least as much as Dio. Maybe that pushed it down a bit for me subconsciously?

Next up on the countdown, same four performers, different band name.

Strand of Oaks #21 - "Ananda" (2024)

This is one of two songs from the eighth Strand album Miracle Focus which came out in early June. It may make it the newest song in anyone's countdown because the other Miracle Focus cut was released as a single a few months earlier.

Miracle Focus is the reason why I picked Strand of Oaks as my MAD artist--not because I loved the album but because it was so different from the others. To be honest, if I hadn't gone on a Strand of Oaks listening binge for this countdown, I would have probably written it off and moved to the next thing. But after repeated listens, the album made more sense in the context of his full catalog and life's journey. It'll probably never be a favorite but it's definitely grown on me.

Tim has used synthesizers since his second album but usually as flavoring. A couple of his more synth dominant recordings didn't make the regular albums and only came out later in rarities compilations. Miracle Focus is the first time he's ever gone all in on synths with what he's called his "meditation synth opera" album. "Ananda" is all synths, programmed drums and processed vocals. The lyrics sound like it's one of his meditation songs and the title may be a mantra. Or else it's another silly love song to Sue.

It's okay to be quiet
To really feel it
Just to sit and listen
Maybe you can hear it
When you get quiet
You can really feel it
It's okay to believe it
It's okay what you're feeling
Hope that you're hoping
Grow if you're growing

I haven't gotten to the recent playlist, but I caught this one the first time around. What really stood out to me was the opening and ending of the song. It had a technical death metal feel for a bit, like an early 90s era Death - a couple parts of See Through Dreams sounded like the opening of the song, for example. I thought the song was great, just that specifically stuck in my head and sent me down a Death rabbit hole today.

I liked this song a lot.

April WineFalguy21st Century Schizoid Man
Love this cover - I probably should have taken this one in the covers draft. Not an easy song to pull off.

Okay, for the #21s I decided to go back to playlist order. Mind you, time constraints forced some of that decision, but I also felt like it was overdue, given that I hadn’t since the #31s. Maybe for the #11s and then #1s? We’ll see, but that’s the hope of a plan

Selected #21s
Dirt Room - Blue October
Cathartik - The Tea Party
First Love/Late Spring - Mitski
Unglued - STP
I’ve Been Trying - The Impressions (/Curtis Mayfield)
The Main Thing - Roxy Music (/Bryan Ferry)
Ananda - Strand of Oaks
Somewhere With You - Kenny Chesney
On Your Wings - Iron & Wine
The Bad Arts - Destroyer
Scythian Empires

Shoutout for Numeral Appropriateness:
September - Earth, Wind & Fire
21st Century Schizoid Man - April Wine
With of course an honorable mention for The Doors’ “Twentieth Century Fox”

Falling behind over here. :( Got some work to do to get caught up. Hopefully, today, I can get through 2 of the 3 that I've missed

15 thoughts from the 21s. * I like others not mentioned below.

- I like the slow piano intro and then when it shifts into a barn burner in "Changing Horses" by Fanny. It's alright, Mama. 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2 .....
- "Man With the Golden Arm" by Sweet is a 🥁🥁 fest.
- "Legal Man" by B&S takes me back to the sound of the mid to late 60s/early 70s, and brings out my inner flower child. 🌸
- What I like best about "You and Me" by DMB is how much it means to Tau837 aka JWB, and his undying love for his wife.
- The slow soul in "I've Been Trying" by The Impressions sounds so good on this rainy Monday.
- I like the flow of the song led by the instruments and  in "Scythian Empires" by Andrew Bird.
- "The House is a Rockin'" by The Brian Setzer Orchestra is high energy. My favorite part is around 1:06 with transition from the horns to the guitar solo.
- "Ananda" by Strand of Oaks is a nice mellow tune, and another good rainy day song. It sounds like it is storming at the end of the tune.
- Speaking of rain, I like how the music sets the mood in "Prayers for Rain" by The Cure.
- When listening to "She's My Baby," I decided that I don't think Mazzy Star could have a found a better vocalist to match their music.
- "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulders)" by the BBs is a pretty song.
- STP can sound pretty good when they come "Unglued."
- I think KP should set all the alarm clocks in his house to "Wake Up (It's 1984)" by Oingo Boingo, and see how it goes. ⏰
- I like the multiple vocal parts in "First Love/Late Spring" by Mitski, especially the chorus.
- "September" by EWF is a feel good song for me. Ba-dee-ya, dee-ya, dee-ya, dee-ya!

21's Thoughts from Slambovia

Known
: STP, DMB, Priest, Cure, Doors, EWF, Dio/Sabbath

At this point, I think I can always list Blue October, Fanny, Tea Party and Oingo Boingo as favorites. To mix things up a bit, I will highlight some of the other artists going forward:

5 New Favorites
Mitski: Never Comes The Day
Brian Setzer: The House is Knockin'
Kenny Chesney: Somewhere With You
Chvrches: Tightrope
Andrew Bird: Scythian Empires

...aaaand caught up. For probably an hour tops  . I had no expectations for the 23's as it was the first round I started with 0 hearts. There were more misses than recent efforts, but the hits were big ones, notably the stretch mid play list between DMB and Judas Priest. This medal stand was...not easy.

The 23's

Medal Stand
Gold Mazzy Star- California, did not expect it to take this long for her to make the stand. She came in guns a blazing though.
Silver Judas Priest- Ram It Down, what a perfect transition into that opening scream. Not many of their tracks connect with me, but speed kills and this one was full of it.
Bronze Tea Party- Turn The Map Down Low, didn't think there was any way this wouldn't take gold on first spin but that middle section was just too strong.
Honorable mention- I'm going to start to shout out current medal count shutouts that got hearts: this round it's Sweet, Andrew Bird, and April Wine.
Also- both Big Eyed Fish and The Bangles were major snubs, enjoyed those more than some of their prior medal stand winners. VERY strong round.

Medal Count
Tea Party - 2 gold, 2 bronze
Blue October - 2 gold, 1 bronze
The Doors - 1 gold, 1 silver
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - 1 gold, 1 silver
STP - 1 gold, 1 bronze
Susanna Hoffs - 1 gold, 1 bronze
DMB- 1 silver, 1 bronze
Mazzy Star- 1 gold
Ronnie Dio - 1 silver
Belle & Sebastian - 1 silver
The Beach Boys - 1 silver
Judas Priest- 1 silver
Roxy Music - 1 silver
Mitski - 1 silver
Fanny - 1 bronze
Stray Cats - 1 bronze
EWF- 1 bronze
You keep spelling Oingo Boingo wrong, gb. ;)
I listened to Perfect System twice! Loved the rhythm, but I just struggle too much with the vocals.
Is that the case with all the songs, or just earlier ones like this? I was thinking about my next song and it specifically is the one where I fell in love with Elfman's voice, and I grew to appreciate it more even on the early tunes with repeat listens.
I intentionally didn't respond to this until I got to their #22 cut. Totally get where you're coming from as the vocals were much stronger on this vs what I remember from the others to this point. I'm a sound first / lyrics distant second music consumer and am generally uninterested in most things 80's new wave, so Oingo Boingo was always going to be an uphill battle with me. By me saying I've not hated about half of what you've tossed out there to this point (and one heart!) should be considered an accomplishment  as my updated new wave total in my library is now...1

While I fell behind on write-up's, there's been some zigging and zagging on the last few Chesney cuts. There was very little 'country' about One More Sunset and Thinkin' Bout, especially the latter. Looking back on this 2 or 3 years from now, I anticipate this will have a stronger ranking then, but felt it was just too new (released March '24) for this exercise.

Kenny Chesney - Somewhere With You also fits the bill. It was a darker / somber turn and while I stop short of calling that rap, there's certainly some scat to his vocal delivery that ties each verse to a rather powerful chorus. Candidly, this deserves a stronger ranking, but I thought it was important this part of the countdown was reserved for some of his subtle left turns. The next few will be more straight forward before the gettin's start gettin' good.

Somewhere with you - a top 5ish, top 10 for sure Kenny song imo. I have a clear favorite KC song, I’m curious to see where it falls.
September - another top 3 imo. Obviously numerology won the day here

The 22's were a bit of a stepback. More skips and less new hearts than usual. It happens.

Gotta stand up for my band, I believe you gave the Slambovians a gold in the 25 round for The Great Unravel.

:kicksrock: was hoping my April Wine tune would get me on the podium. Thought it might be up your alley. Still 20 more chances. 🤞

I had a feeling we were due for a major bounce back in the 21's and I was not disappointed.

The 21's

Medal Stand
Gold Fanny- Changing Horse, what a jam- beautiful interlude then it kicks in and never let's go with a few surprises along the way
Silver Steve Albini- Painwise, while I expected a lot of his stuff to miss with me, I'm surprised it took him this long to find the stand
Bronze STP- Unglued, our bronze champ? **that riff**
Honorable mention1 - it being a cover squeezes Brian Setzer from this stacked round, but on first listen...I liked it more than the original :headbang:
Honorable mention2 - tough leaving April Wine out again, can't be too much longer before they get on the stand

Medal Count

Ha! I didn't read this before my last post. 21st Century Schizoid Man would've easily medaled in the 22's too. Couldn't get enough of that guitar

22s

Enjoyed this playlist quite a bit. Added a number of new tunes (and a few artists I havent spotlighted previously)

2 or 3 I absolutely

Soulbreaking - Tea Party
Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits - Jerry Jeff
I'm Satisfied - Fanny
Long breakdown - Oingo
For the Price of a Cup of Tea - B &S
She's Sexy (and 17) - 🐱
Oh Yeah!- Roxy Music
Sunbathers - Strand of Oaks
Hello, I Love You - Doors
Quiet The Winter Harbour - Mazzy Star
Save It For a Rainy Day - Kenny Chesney
I Get Around - beach Boys - Classic!
Freedom Hangs Like Heaven - Iron & Wine

Great list. Love the 22's!
it was a relatively mellow list, in general, which may explain why I enjoyed it so much. Was in the mood for

I Wouldn't Want to Lose Your Love is another great, IMO, ballad by April Wine. They don't have many songs with Piano in use but it was well done here. I love the vocal in this one.
21's will offer up a different April Wine sound and their first cover song to appear in my list.

Actually, I was wrong. I was referring to 21;s Century but it, of course, is in the 21s playlist so not exactly can it medal in your 22's list lol . I need to stop living down to my FalBehindGuy moniker .

OK, throwing the 21s on random and commenting on the 1st 5 to come up

The Moody BluesCharlie SteinerNever Comes the Day

Full disclosure: some of my playlists have holes in them (and I may start a series of posts to fill in the cracks some day; but that day isn't today). This is one of them
Added to 1969 - A drunkard's dream

Iron and WineTuffnuttOn Your Wings

 Great tune. Not the one I have on my 2004 playlist (I expect we won't see that one for a while, but what the hell do I know), but Our Endless Numbered Days is such a great collection of mp3s you almost can't go wrong with anything off it.

Earth, Wind, & FireUruk-HaiSeptember

OK, this is getting ridiculous. Three fantastic songs in a row. I swear this is random (must be a very strong 21 playlist).
Oh, and remember what I said about holes? :bag:
I have EW&F covered in my 1977 and 1978, but I have no idea why it took until now to put this absolute banger on 1978 - Cool young whippersnapper
(Maybe I should start filling in the cracks sooner rather than later. There could be a lot to rectify.)

Steve AlbiniOliver HumanzeeZeni Geva - Painwise (Nai Ha)

This is not my wheelhouse, but I do appreciate the musicianship. Color me surprised when I checked and saw that it was from 2018 (and glad I checked cuz I thought they were singing Pennywise).
Wait a minute, we've hit the 2:00 mark and things have gone batshit crazy. Are they torturing kittens? 2:30 and the music is back.
It's got my head boppin' a little and I may even have bitten my underlip there for a second.
A weird one, but I like weird.

OK last one ...
Blue October-OZ-Dirt Room
Not sure why it has a youtube link as it was the 5th song randomly on the playlist

Anyway, an artist I'm only skin deep on. I like everything I've heard. Dirt Room sounds (to me) like a more urbane Rancid/Alkaline Trio tune. I like it. I like it a lot.
Added to 2009 - All twisted and broken (btw, playlist title is from a song on a previous Round 3 playlist; easy enough to figure out :D )

Decent idea, but since 1990 I've been wanting Brandon Walsh's alarm clock.

Good stuff, and a fun idea with the randomizing.

Also, some participants don't have spotify, so I just search on there and add the songs I see the youtube links for.

Just dropped OH at O’Hare and am awaiting my mom’s arrival for Part Two of my Chicago visit. Funny enough, OH is getting on the same plane my mom is getting off of. I told him to say hi as he sees her, and he said, “Oh yeah, I’ll go up and scare the **** out of her!” Sigh.

Reminiscent of this morning, when we were driving back down from the event in Zion, IL to Chicago, and my mom texted. I gave him my phone to text her back. Contents of his text: “This is definitely Krista and not [OH] using Krista’s phone while she drives to the condo. I am a poo poo head and I will text you later.”

To which my mom responded, “ok.”

:lmao:

Anyway, Steve’s memorial was beautiful but so ****ing exhausting. I’ll post more, including some links, when I can. This morning the only musical performer was Ty Segall, but he was fantastic. They’d moved everything inside due to rain, and maybe 1/3 of people weren’t around anymore, so we were in a banquet room like you’d be at for a mid-sized wedding. We ended up in the front table just to the left, so it was as if we had Ty Segall over to play in our living room. Neither of us had been very Ty-curious before, but we’re converts.

OH knows he’s gonna be two write-ups behind tomorrow so is allegedly in the Sky Club writing yesterday’s and tomorrow’s up. I was pleased to see some love here for the Zeni Geva track. IIRC there’s a good story about that one.

There's a Fanny cover that didn't make my top 31 or Last 5 Out that has grown on me since I made my list. I'll share it at the end just to mess with KP further.
I've been dodging some bullets with these Youtube-only covers. I also never said I would listen to all bonus songs, just all official 31s. ;)

I put YouTube links on my list, as I don’t pay for Spotify. I can share my Pandora FBG list but that would give all the songs so kinda against the theme of the thread.

So if you don't pay for Spotify, you can't copy the links? I did not know that.
I don't pay for Spotify yet I can share the links. One of you folks tipped me off about that in one of the previous drafts.
Yeah, I don’t pay but I can copy links on my desktop and laptop. Haven’t tried on the app but I rarely use it because it sucks.

Well, you will still get six “official” covers and like if!
You are 1/2 right!!
