Ronnie James Dio #15
Artist: Dio
Song: Caught In the Middle
(off Holy Diver, 1983)

(youtube version) Caught in the Middle
(live version) RONNIE JAMES DIO: Caught in The Middle

You'll feel it, you'll see it
You'll feel the rush of the city lights
I feel it, I see it in your eyes, you're
Caught in the middle

I suppose if I’d been plotting things out, this would’ve been #16, smack in the middle. Eh, close enough. Still a few more from this album to go (in what’s likely no surprise), but let me look at this song a little more closely.

The base meaning is pretty much there in the title. Being stuck between what you want to do and what you’re expected to do. Of course, you can be forgiven for not looking too deep into the lyrics, given the power of the guitar riffs in this song, not to mention Dio’s vocals. Though by now you’ve likely listened to it, assuming you weren’t already well familiar with it..

Next up on the countdown, I've fallen behind, so you already know. Nothing’s Sacred, I guess ;) #14 coming soon-ish/tomorrow.

Any guitarists in the crowd that can comment on the rest of the Priest post?

I took it to mean they are playlist 4x as fast, or probably more accurately 4x the notes in a measure? Is that accurate, and if so I was telling RW that was a bit surprised that Sabbath or Deep Purple or similar waant first. That song does sound like Slayer and the birth of thrash metal too, so.

I know it's that up and down strumming that sometimes can sound scratchy.

STP #14 - Hello It’s Late
Album - Shanghai La Dee Da (2001)

Hello, I know It’s Late for my my #14 writeup with the next drop coming tomorrow, but I was out of town this last week and couldn’t keep up.

This is a beautiful song that Scott wrote after an argument with his wife. It’s about letting down and being let down by someone you love.

Nothing matters again
I didn't think it'd last that long
But I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round,
And the music is too loud

It's just a game
That we used to play
I didn't think we'd
Take it all the way
It kills me just because
It can't be erased -
We're married

Life got in the way of the #15s. But better late than never, and I’m not going to skip by them (at least not intentionally). Not when there’s a lot to love and/or discover.

Selected (and shuffled) #15s
Should Be Loved - Blue October
What I Like About Texas - Jerry Jeff Walker
Papa Joe - Sweet & Brian Connelly
Pretty Penny - STP
We Got to Have Peace - Curtis Mayfield
Boogie Wonderland - Earth, Wind & Fire
Stay (Wasting Time) - Dave Matthews Band
Strange Days - The Doors
Love is the Drug - Roxy Music
Funny Little Frog - Belle and Sebastian
Walking Down Your Street - The Bangles (/Susanna Hoffs)

Shuffle Adventures:
I’m not much of a drinker, but I’d raise a toast to the combination of The Tea Party’s “Samsara’, April Wine’s “Anything You Want, You Got It”, and “Call it Dreaming” by Iron & Wine

fantasy football have made things really busy for me this week
Oh, I miss those days. I'm still in 2 leagues and they're both built around golf. One we draft via group text while on the course. Each group is equipped with a penalty shot quality liquor provided by the prior season's last place finisher. Any time there's a dupe pick, SHOT!!! The other we draft at our buddies pool house after the round - a round in which teams are rewarded a one stroke deduction for ever beer consumed. This is a 40 man league (four 10 team divisions) and also offline, so we rarely make it all the way through the draft before the wives pull the plug.

These are both the same weekend (next one), but thankfully not consecutive days. Oh, but what started this, fantasy football - yeah, prep ain't happening this year. As soon I finish the 16's I'm heading back to the islands for one last long weekend. If someone has a generic excel doc I'd be grateful. The 10 teamer is 2 qb and the 12 teamer is 1 qb - all else the same: 2 rb / 3 wr / 1 te / flex / d / k, decent sized bench + ir.

Honestly, I don't do much prep until about a month before my first draft. I make a list based on ADP and/or expert consensus rankings at fantasypros, adjust based on placements I disagree with, and then check up on news that might prompt further adjustments. Two of my leagues are on MFL, which has a news aggregator feature that makes it easy to keep up with updates.

At my draft last night I met a former Eagle (the football kind, not the music kind). Brandon Whiting, who played in the late '90s/early '00s, works with a longtime owner in this league and was recruited by him to join after another owner left. So that was nice.

By the time I come to again, if my math is right, y'all will be on the 11's. I'll try to wedge in some write up's between drinks when I find an internet connection, but I also said that the last few weekends I was away and didn't. Some banger's coming though - including what's already out there with the 14's. I think Come Over's gonna connect with a lot in this crowd.

But anyway...

Artist: Dio
Song: Sacred Heart
(off Sacred Heart, 1985)

(youtube version) Sacred Heart (2016 Remaster)
(12 minute live version featuring a giant dragon) Dio - Sacred Heart - HD Live - YouTube

Oh, sometimes you never fall
And, ah, you're the lucky one
But oh, sometimes you need it all
You've got to reach for the sun

That live version isn’t a music video, it’s a short film. As 80s as it gets. The top comment is rightfully “You might be cool but you'll never be Ronnie James Dio fighting a dragon onstage with a lightsaber during a concert cool....”. That's a bit of an oversell, but it's still worth that time investment.

It’s easy to put aspects of fantasy or religion towards this song, and there’s definitely a bit of mysticism built into the performance. Though most of the “magic” here is about love. The vulnerability and difficulty that comes with it. Pretty much what you’re used to know with powerful guitars and driving vocals, with an occasional touch of haunting keyboard. I really love this song, and it’s tough not putting it higher, but there’s great stuff left. Especially more title tracks >.>

Next on the countdown, a song that might take you halfway around the world.

Honestly, I don't do much prep until about a month before my first draft.
A month? I do it a couple days before, and it consist of printing out a cheat sheet so I can keep track of who is available and who has been taken. I do check to see who is hurt or suspended, and will catch a few news things on NFL Network. I've been tinkering with the Subscriber Contest the last two days, and it is helpful on who switched to what team.

ETA. A luxury of slow drafts. My home league died long ago

Pffft, i dont do any prep at all these days.
Just wing it.
Proud owner of zero championships in 25 years. Three in the four years before that when i did do some prep.
Might be a message in that to me somewhere. I will give it a couple of years and see if i can figure it out

With all due respect to the terrific content performed on this site, the consensus rankings at FantasyPros is the best tool out there IMO because it amalgamates a lot of expert opinions.. Can just download and tweak. Between that, the Shark Pool, Joe's daily email, and the @32BeatWriters account on Twitter, I get everything I need to screw up my drafts.

The giant fire breathing dragon that Dio used on that tour is still one of the coolest things I've seen on stage at a concert.

 at the bolded.

Using consensus rankings does eliminate a lot of bias and outliers. I don't necessarily want to follow the average herd opinion, but I want to know what it is.

Used to be in 10-15 leagues a year, now i can't remember the last league i was in. Don't even enjoy football anymore. I'm here for the music and movie talk!

After I posted that I thought to myself - doh! it's probably the music league I flaked out on.

I should have posted I can't remember the last league I saw to the end. :bag:

It was the one you flaked out on! I remember you kept the same lineup in for a long time, but kept winning even with playing players on bye. You gave the saying "set it and forget it" a whole new meaning. Finally your luck ended, and your team imploded.

STP #13 - Sin
Album - Core (1992)

This is where we hit the gas on the STP playlist. No more ballads, no more inside stories of personal connections to lesser known songs, just bangers from here on out.

This is one of the longer songs on my playlist (too lazy to check if it really is the longest) and it’s worth the extra time. It was written about a nasty relationship Robert DeLeo had recently gotten out of. How you can walk away from a violent and abusive relationship, but the remains still follow you long afterward.

Still shackled to the shadow
Still shackled to the shadow
That followed you

:headbang: :headbang:

The Beach Boyszamboni"Wouldn't It Be Nice"
And here we have the opening tune leading off Pet Sounds. Back in 1966 when there was no social media and limited information flow, I imagine many listeners first picking up this album and hearing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" were thinking something along the lines of "cool, another peppy Beach Boys album with a bunch of surf songs." After WIBN, listeners were clearly taken in a much different, complex musical direction. When word did get out about Pet Sounds, this shift in direction may explain why the album didn't sell very well, and had lukewarm critical reaction, upon its release - many listeners probably just weren't ready for it (Marty McFly: "But your kids are gonna love it.") Sixteen members of the Wrecking Crew played on WIBN, with that iconic opening harp-like sound courtesy of Barney Kessel, who used a 12-string mando guitar plugged into the recording console. And then the trademark Hal Blaine "thwap" on the drums before the vocals begin. According to some accounts. the lyrics relate to Brian's supposed infatuation with his wife's sister. This was never confirmed though.

Blue October-OZ-The Lucky One

One of the less popular songs from their 2016 🏠 album which will have two others in the top 12. It just fit here at #13 as we get into their good vibrations era.
The album, probably their most positive one overall, debuted at number 1 on the Rock Albums Chart, number 1 on the Alternative Albums Chart, number 1 on the Independent Albums Chart, and number 19 on the billboard 200.
The cover image is a painting representing Jeremy and Justin Furstenfeld's parents' first kiss. :oldunsure:

You are the rain conductor, a sunset operator
When the sky goes dark, you're, you're the star locator
Like an old lost instrument, we play this key together
And I'm the lucky one and I'll, I'll be that way forever
You came, we saw
A smile that conquered it all
How do we do this on our own?
And where do we go
When life gets oh, oh, so emotional?
But, easy to see we're one and the same
One heart, one star, we are

First thought while looking at the list - how the —— are wouldn’t it be nice, pictures of you, and touch me not top 12? 🫤

The Moody BluesCharlie SteinerThe Voice
I remember this being my first exposure to the Moodies in middle school. Thought it was a really cool tune - and still do - but was awhile until I realized that this essentially marked the reincarnation of a band that had so much to offer years before.

13. The Voice (Long Distance Voyager, 1981)

(I misspoke on my last write-up; I'm Just a Singer marked the end of the third part of their story and here we pick up the next)

Part IV: Veteran Cosmic Rockers

Despite the catastrophe what was the Octave album, the show must go on.

To replace Mike Pinder, the band brought in Patrick Moraz, a Swiss-born, jazz-influenced musician who had dabbled a little in prog rock with a resume that included playing with Yes for the two years prior to joining the Moodies. Also, producer Tony Clarke was replaced by Phillip 'Pip' Williams, among whose collaborations was (The) Sweet on their album Waters Edge.

The first product of this (again) reconstituted lineup was the album Long Distance Voyager (the album's cover is my avatar for this countdown). Ray Thomas claimed the title was simply a description of the band itself, and John Lodge stated the album was about people: "The whole idea is we are the same as we were a hundred years ago, two hundred years ago. It's about people and situations and feelings".

For as much of a flop as Octave had been, Long Distance Voyager enjoyed a greater measure of success, reaching #7 in the UK and #1 on the US Top 200 Albums chart.

The Voice is the lead-in track to the album and its first commercial release, reaching #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Another Justin Hayward composition, he reflected back on writing it: "It was the first thing that we recorded for Long Distance Voyager. I used to feel a lot of guilt about our position in the world and that we were really privileged and that went into that song." The difference between Moraz's style and Mike Pinder's is immediately noticeable with this song.

When this song and album came out, I only knew the Moodies for Nights in White Satin, Tuesday Afternoon and Ride My See-Saw, and this one grabbed me more than the others. I liked the up-tempo pace and the synthesizer effects, so much that I chose it over Journey's Escape when I was the right caller to my local pop radio station. Even though I really like Stone in Love, I still think I made the right choice.

Belle and Sebastiankupcho1Judy and the Dream of Horses
The second from If You're Feeling Sinister (on any given day my favorite release), Judy and the Dream of Horses

As I've mentioned previously, I like to do a little research on song meanings and in doing this one ... :yucky:
There are some twisted minds out there.

The best take: Judy wants to fit in and maybe went a little too far (so to speak). So then she changes course

Judy was a teenage rebel
She did it with a boy when she was young
She gave herself to books and learning
She gave herself to being number one

Lovely song regardless. Hope you enjoy it.

Curtis MayfieldDon QuixoteSo In Love, by Curtis Mayfield
This one is from 1975’s There’s No Place Like America Today album. I had “Billy Jack” in my five out, but this is the only one from the album to make my 31. I’d probably put the album just below his big three of Curtis, Superfly, and Roots for his top solo albums though.

Cover art of the album is based on Margaret Bourke-White’s “At the Time of the Louisville Flood” picture, with the juxtaposition of the smiling white family on the billboard while impoverished blacks line up for relief.

This song does not have any political message though. Just a beautiful love ballad, heavy on the horns. One that worked its way up my rankings as time went on and gave it more listens.

So in love
You do so many things with that smilin' face
So in love
Every time we kiss, it's such a pleasant taste

…Sticking with another love ballad for #12.

The Slambovian Circus of DreamsYambagBaby Jane
Live shows in Slambovia are always two sets with an intermission in between where the band comes out to mingle and take pics with the audience. Joziah said that a challenge with coming out during the intermission and chatting with the crowd is that he gets a million requests. At a recent show one fan requested "Baby Jane" a song dedicated to the invincible spirit of women. When Joziah said they weren't planning on playing it, the fan said the song had changed her life and showed Joziah the tattoo she had gotten of the song on her upper thigh. And then, well, how can you not play a song for someone who has it tattooed on their body?? This means, according to Joziah, that there is a new standard for getting a request played: show your tattoo.
