Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 5 - #1's have been posted. Link in OP. (3 Viewers)

@Dr. Octopus Golden Smog are playing shows in Jersey City and NYC in December

The links for the Jersey City show did not work and when I called no one answered at the venue = so I bought tickets for the Bowrey Ballroom in NYC.

Lots of new Mads-adjacent new releases but a rare week without a single named lady or an Afrobeat release

New Big Thief for @Ilov80s
I’ve had this one presaved for awhile but this is one of the best things anyone on this board does. Thanks man.

Also digging the album quite a bit. I hadn’t realized their bass player quit and it’s just a trio now.

I like the new Big Thief record. The sound is more expansive and even a little poppier than their earlier stuff. It seems like more of a band record than Adrienne Lenker's solo stuff (well duh) but maybe a little more uneven so maybe her songwriting is a bit stretched.

Any plans for another of these? I'll have to start listening again to my artist soon. I am currently stuck on a weird foursome of Thin Lizzy, Aesop Rock, Megadeth, and The Sea and Cake. I've gone through all the albums and have been working on playlists.

@zamboni - the plan is to have that Lizzy playlist done by the weekend. I am down to 47, but wanted to trim it down a little farther before sharing.

My artist is ready.
I just finished my deep dive into red jump suit apparatus. Better than I thought but really only one song is awesome.
Before that - red clay strays, big fan.
Before that - Red Hot Chili Peppers. Obviously they rock and would make a great countdown artist.
Next week - Pink Floyd, obviously one of the GOAT. then I’ll probably dig into P!nk.

I love that you still do these weekly/monthly themes. I am too scatterbrained for music themes so I have sunk into having 4-6 artists I listen to a lot, dig through albums, and make a playlist if I am liking it enough. I'll kick artists out of the group if I finish a playlist or get tired of an artist. I finished the Thin Lizzy playlist, so I moved my Pearl Jam project into the rotation and bumped up McCoy Tyner since I've been enjoying the sprinkling of jazz. Megadeth is almost done and I'll probably move Deftones in the mix next. 🎧

I was thinking today that my music listening has dipped the past couple of weeks. I was thinking that may have just been too busy with work to put on music, but also realized how much of my music listening comes from the FFA and at a bit of a lull now. Had the MAD stuff, the greatest albums thread, and then Summerpalooza, but don’t really have any of those going now.

We've passed Labor Day and the football draft season. Maybe it's time. I need to claim an artist off waivers.

Maybe we can choose an artist and then assign a football player to each of their top 31 songs.

I’m claiming Yo La Tengo.

I need to change my next theme pick. Someone (maybe KP?) expressed extreme aversion to bagpipes. I'll go with harmonica instead.

Still deciding on MAD artist.

Is there a theme one planned? I think that was a one off.

Personally I’m interested in the Artists ones more.

I'm claiming it just in case. But I've settled on my artist.

Jethro Tull is off the board.

The connection to Ozzy makes me appreciate this pick.

Tony Iommi left Ozzy and Earth to become a member of Jethro Tull for a brief period before Black Sabbath got going.

I just found that out today. Weird.

My first full listen is a blast from the past from glam rockers Sea Hags who were the hottest band in SF for fifteen minutes in the late 80s. It's ten songs recorded made for a small studio audience before the boys moved to LA, changed personnel, recorded a major label album and became a cautionary rock 'n roll tale.

My second full spin last night was the new one by Fruit Bats, the solo project of singer/songwriter Eric D. Johnson. I don't know much about Fruit Bats but I became a fan of Johnson through his work with folkie supergroup Bonny Light Horseman along with Anais Mitchell and Josh Kaufman. Bonny Light Horseman has put three exceptional albums this decade. I believe @The Dreaded Marco is also a fan.

Anyways back to Fruit Bats. The record is mostly sparse acoustic arrangement that highlight Johnson pure and clear tenor voice. I need to listen deeper into the lyrics but the music is lovely.

I had their major label debut. The big song was “Half The Way Valley.”

Cautionary tale? What happened? I guess I’ll go look it up.

In happier news and a rare crossover of 40% of my MADs artists, Marr appears on four tracks of the upcoming Gorillaz album.
I think YouTube took it down, but someone posted a 40 minute compilation of nothing but Smiths instrumentals. It highlighted Marr's guitar as well as their excellent rhythm section.

In sadder news about my previous MADs artists, Los Lobos have cancelled their co-headlining tour with X this fall
Any reason? Seemed like an odd but cool pairing.

Health presumably. Everybody in both bands is getting up there in years although they've played individual shows this summer.

We saw them on the same bill at the Fillmore in 2018. They both came from the same LA scene in the late 70s and X seems closer musically to rootsier SoCal bands like Los Lobos and The Blasters than their punk peers.

That’s too bad, Eephus. They’re actually still playing Riverside, CA and Reno, NV, but that does you no good. Some discussion here.

Oh well, I've seen both bands multiple times and I don't like the all seated venue they were booked at (Oakland Paramount).

Dave Mason, 79, has retired from touring due to health issues. Earlier this year he cancelled a planned summer tour. He was diagnosed with a heart condition last year.

He handles vocals on "Feeling Alright" on the Tedeschi Trucks live cover album of "Mad Dogs and Englishman" - which was pretty neat.

I went to one of the limited release viewings of "David Gilmour: Live at Circus Maximus" in IMAX last night. It really felt like you were at the show and the sound was incredible.

My only slight criticism was it was mostly his newer solo material and only a handful of Floyd songs - but the "Comfortably Numb" encore was incredible and even the newer songs sounded great live.

I believe there is another showing in October - I highly recommend getting a ticket if you're a Gilmour fan.

A little later but it's still Friday and time for MADs adjacent etc. etc.

Live album from Johnny Marr

Single named lady is Wednesday which began as a solo project before evolving into a real band

Soundtrack stuff from NIN

Lost Cowsills album from the late 70s

Speaking of lost albums, Buckingham Nicks finally makes its digital debut

An unplugged-ish set from Toro Y Moi

Another one from Dave Alvin's psychedelic side project for when I take him on as a MADs artist

Plus reissues with bonus stuff from The Pogues and Lenny Kravitz. A fan compilation by Umphrey's McGee. New albums from Sarah McLachlan, Cardi B, Ariel Pink, The Divine Comedy and Nation of Language.
