Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 5 - #30's have been posted. Link in OP. (5 Viewers)

Beef: I was just looking into it, and PUTS actually had beef with the guy in the video you linked to, KP. The guy on stage, I think. They threatened him with a “piece under [the] seat” of their auto in a song on the O.S.T. album. Anyway, he wrote this article in response and they all became friends after. Cool stuff.

I’m on my way home from Sicily and learned at 3 am that Wrighteous Ray is in the hospital with heart issues. Might as well ask here for some TPW for her. While you’re at it, her husband was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago and is undergoing chemo and radiation so could use some, too. Not great news in the 4 family right now.
Jesus. All of my positive thoughts headed your way, my friend.

Oh no. Sending all that I can your way. Sorry to hear this, krista4.

I was just thinking about something to do with OST
What is "OST"?

Original Soundtrack

@Mrs. Rannous : O.S.T. = the album the song on the playlist was from.

Ugh. So sorry, krista. Positive thoughts your way.

For my Billy Joel commentary, I'm going to wait for @simey 's writeups. But I think what I'm going to do is name and write about someone I think would've done the song better.
"We Didn't Start The Fire" should be epic.
I'm guessing that isn't one of his best 31 songs.
That's because he doesn't have 31 best songs.
I am picturing Statler and Waldorf on the balcony while reading these.

NO SPOILERS!

It is a good sign when it was so hard to narrow down songs and artists that stood out on the #31s. I fully agree with whoever posted that the flow of the playlist was smoother than some we have put together. I will chicken out a bit by saying I echo thoughts of the thread about a few I have seen mentioned a bit: Go-Gos, Golden Smog, Gap Band, The Babys, Otis, Neil, ARthur, etc. Here are a few others that really grabbed my attention as well:

The Pale Fountains - Reach I really dug this one. I got Morrissy vibes, but more like if Morrissy could smile? One of my favorites of the playlist, especially as the horns come in.
The English Beat - How Can You Stand There? We will stay on that side of the pond for another tune. This was one of the playlists I was most interested in based on the few songs I've come across before. Great way to start off.
Meatloaf - If You Really Want To That didn't take long to break the ice. I will be honest, I was dreading this slot on the playlist, but that is what these music adventures are all about - getting exposed to stuff I would never think of trying to listen to. By far the biggest surprise of the playlist - good tune!
The Doobie Brothers - Nobody Like English Beat, this was another playlist I was really looking forward to based on the few songs I know. Both groups I had been considering deep dives, on so I am glad to have a guide for those artists
The Waterboys - The Big Music Never heard of them before artists were posted, but based on how 80s was describing them, they were another I was really interested to hear. Great start.

Almost a full trend. Too bad he didn't go with The Meatloaf to go 5/5.

As always - great music, all! I listened to this playlist a few times already.

Wasn’t Angry Old Man already drafted? ;)

I liked most all of round 31. I'm getting ready to leave for my nephews college graduation at UNC, so I'm going to quickly mention a few that I haven't already commented on that I liked a lot.

Automatic Rainy Day
Looking For Love and Every Time I Look Up I'm Down or White Dog are both good 70s rock.
Bang!
Looking Forward to Seeing You - I'm looking forward to seeing Wilco Thursday
I Of the Mourning
Steppin' Out -
You Left the Water Running - I'll probably love all of his songs
The Golden Age
Four Thousand Days
Nobody
While My Guitar Gently Weeps

I've never heard of City and Colour and liked "The Girl" a lot. Same with the Headstones and their song "Exhausted."

Holy heck. Is this the nephew you’d order sneakers with? Congrats to him and you! How cool, and what a school and accomplishment!

Eric Clapton #31:

Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps

I couldn't figure out where to rank this song. It could be my favorite on the entire list, but it is a Clapton list and it didn't feel right putting a Beatles song in the top 5. So I decided to use it to open my list instead. I ranked this song #1 on my Beatles list the last time there was a Beatles countdown in this forum. I don't think I even realized then that Clapton played lead guitar in the song, but that helps to explain why it was my favorite.

George Harrison and Clapton were friends, and they collaborated many times. Harrison wrote this song and wanted Clapton to play lead guitar to provide a more expressive, bluesy sound to complement the song’s emotional depth. From Wikipedia:

Harrison asked Clapton to play guitar on the track. Clapton, who recognised Harrison's talent as a songwriter and considered that his abilities had long been held back by Lennon and McCartney, was nevertheless reluctant to participate; he later recalled that his initial response was: "I can't do that. Nobody ever plays on Beatles records." Harrison convinced him, and Clapton's lead guitar part, played on Harrison's Gibson Les Paul electric guitar "Lucy" (a recent gift from Clapton), was overdubbed that evening. Recalling the session in his 2007 autobiography, Clapton says that, while Lennon and McCartney were "fairly non-committal", he thought the track "sounded fantastic", adding: "I knew George was happy, because he listened to it over and over in the control room".

Clapton’s guitar solo is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and soulful solos in rock history. The solo fits seamlessly into the song’s arrangement, reflecting the themes of sorrow, loss, and yearning. Clapton’s playing almost feels like a conversation, as his guitar seems to "weep" along with Harrison’s lyrics. Clapton's solo was largely improvised during the recording, and it showcases his ability to create a highly emotive and nuanced performance in the studio. He played his part in the song in just one take.

Clapton's solo became a blueprint for melodic, lyrical soloing rather than technical showmanship, using bends, vibrato, and sustain to make the guitar “sing.” Many guitarists, from blues players to rock icons, have studied and emulated the solo’s phrasing and emotional depth. Players like Slash, John Frusciante, Gary Moore, and Joe Bonamassa have praised the song as a formative influence.

Songwriters like Noel Gallagher (Oasis) and Thom Yorke (Radiohead) have cited The Beatles’ later material—including this track—as an inspiration for blending emotional lyricism with experimental textures and expressive guitar lines.

I think this may have been the only time an 'outsider' played guitar on a Beatles song. What a great moment in rock history it was.

My favorites from the 31s:

Reach - my favorite "new to me' song from this list.
Looking Forward To Seeing You - I'm a Golden Smog fan so I look forward to the others.
Wake Up Romeo - never heard of this artist and I really enjoyed this song
Rode to Joy - big Oberst fan. Many can't get past his voice but I love his warble. And he writes some very painfully angsty lyrics.
Exhausted- another unfamiliar artist whose song I liked a lot.
Four Thousand Days - like I said up thread, I love Luna. So I expect to like every one on these playlists.
The Golden Age - I would have had difficulty whittling Beck down to 31 songs. I almost did Beck for MAD4. This song would've been higher on my list.

Just to reiterate, I didn't rank 31 songs (it was 20 or 21 and I told him to "wild card" the rest) for JML's Otis Redding countdown. So his scoring is going to be a little whacky at the beginning. I expect it'll lock in pretty well when we get to #18 or so. I'd bet everything I own that krista and I have the same #1 (she & I have not talked about this list). JML's own rankings are the real wild card here for me since he's from another side of the globe and I don't know which Redding resonates most outside of the U.S.

Congrats to your nephew!

My son is graduating college next weekend (University of Massachusetts) - it’s that time of year. #nomoretuitionpayments

ETA: I just realized that I joined this board (on day one) a month after he was born.

Not that whacky actually.
There will be 4 songs that I am the only ranker on in the chart. Including my #7 ranked song. So a little whacky.
The first of my solo efforts will be the #30. Then the #27 overall, then #26 overall and where my #7 song ranks we will see.

The rankings get more stable when you join us. At #25. This is the only song on your list Krista did not rank.
There are some very interesting songs from #30 to #26 though, including one that wouldnt appear on many Otis lists. A very early track.that both Krista and I ranked

Of course there are some variations in rankings between the 3 of us.
Krista’s #2 song is not on your list and WAS well down on mine.
My #2 song is well down on Kristas list, but top 10 in yours
6 songs are top 10 in ALL 3 of our lists.

Your #1 summarization is correct. But it will not be the #1 song overall thanks to me.

Overall my individual rankings werent as wild as i thought they would be. With 3 or 4 exceptions.

I was in a couple of vinyl record stores last week and asked if they had any Otis on vinyl.
They both said as soon as they get any in, its gone in a day or 2. Luckily one shop had two “out the back” that he sold me.

I don't care about all this mumbo jumbo. I'm glad Otis is a part of this and "You Left the Water Running" is a great start. It's one of those songs I wanted to share with someone once, cuz dat hook is so good, but I couldn't remember enough details to find it. Boy did I smile when I saw it on the list. Now if I could only remember who I wanted to share it with. 🤦‍♂️

New to me, added to my likes list

Nobody, doobie - a band I will dig deep later this year hopefully (I have a long list)

I of the mourning 🎃- I recognize it but vaguely

How can you stand there, English beat - band is completely new to me 👍

Intro, people under the stairs 👍

Automatic rainy day, go gos - I don’t think I ever thought it before with the songs I know from them but I got big Cyndi Lauper vibes. Which is a good thing.

Favorite from 31 - solitary man 💎

Looking forward to the Smashing Pumpkins list. They influenced a lot of 21st century Indie bands.

Listening to their albums can be a daunting task for me because there's so much music on them. Most of you know my schtick about long songs but I think Billy is one of those artists who would have benefited from having to work within the time constraints of the LP record format.

That just means Mellon Collie would have been a triple album if vinyl was a thing in the 90s.

The real question is: how is Chamberlain's snare sound?

Billy definitely could benefit from paring things down. Like KP, I agree that even Mellon Collie would benefit from a few less songs. Post Machina, an often heard comment on their albums are "a bit too long" or "would be much better with 3-4 less songs". Billy always seems to have grand ideas, some of which only seem to resonate with him, especially when it comes to the 3 album rock opera Atum, which is the only album(s) I could not get through. However, even on Spotify, the deluxe versions of popular albums include a ton of b-sides, which makes them tough to get through. Interestingly enough, their most recent album clocks in a at a slim 44 minutes for 10 songs and is a nice return to form imo.

I love Jimmy's drumming. It's the best thing about the band for me. There's a jazzy delicacy beneath all the power--he swings a lot more than someone like Lars or Matt Sorum.

The Pumpkins probably had enough clout with their label to pull this off in 1995 but it would have cost them financially.

It was a main reason i fell for them too. Iirc, he has a jazz background too.

Eta: snare sound aside, St. Anger made it clear how much Lars wails on his snare and how uncreative the drumming gets for them.

Same, I feel he is the heart of the band and you can hear the difference on the albums he is not on.

What later albums was he back in the band for again?

I've made 3 commitments to this.

1. I'm keeping up with playlists before the next one drops. 27 was surprisingly easier time-wise than 34.

2. I'm going to provide some kind of write-up for all my songs despite failing to do any in advance as planned.

3. I'm going to read everything Pip writes.
Both of the first two are sub- 2 hours. That 2 hour mark seems to be the sweet spot for these, and doesn't seem quite as intimidating to keep up with every 2-3 days.

Is this the nephew you’d order sneakers with?
Yes, that's him! In high school he would try and get new sneakers when they would drop, and then he would flip them. If the drop was on a weekend, he would ask my sister and I to try and get some during a drop for him, too. It always seemed to time out on me when I'd finally get in to get them. He made enough money doing that to buy himself a new used car in high school. I think he did it his first year in college, too, for a little while.

Less prog and jam bands probably accounts for part of this.

I'm getting ready to leave for my nephews college graduation at UNC,
You let a relative go to UNC? Should we do a wellness check on you?
Don't forget I'm the black sheep that went to ECU and not NC State like every one else in the family. I laughed when my nephew chose to go to the dark side. My sister said he was scared to tell my parents that he chose UNC. They didn't care, they were proud of him. He was accepted everywhere he applied, but Miami and UNC offered him a full tuition scholarship. He liked both schools, and it came all the way down to two days before he had to commit to pick UNC. I did notice that my parents never offered him tickets to any NC State home games against Carolina. I guess they didn't want a Tar Hole sitting in the Wolves Den. My nephew will start his first big job in September. It's in Dallas, TX, and I'm sure my sister will cry when they take him there to get settled in August.
