It is a good sign when it was so hard to narrow down songs and artists that stood out on the #31s. I fully agree with whoever posted that the flow of the playlist was smoother than some we have put together. I will chicken out a bit by saying I echo thoughts of the thread about a few I have seen mentioned a bit: Go-Gos, Golden Smog, Gap Band, The Babys, Otis, Neil, ARthur, etc. Here are a few others that really grabbed my attention as well:

The Pale Fountains - Reach I really dug this one. I got Morrissy vibes, but more like if Morrissy could smile? One of my favorites of the playlist, especially as the horns come in.
The English Beat - How Can You Stand There? We will stay on that side of the pond for another tune. This was one of the playlists I was most interested in based on the few songs I've come across before. Great way to start off.
Meatloaf - If You Really Want To That didn't take long to break the ice. I will be honest, I was dreading this slot on the playlist, but that is what these music adventures are all about - getting exposed to stuff I would never think of trying to listen to. By far the biggest surprise of the playlist - good tune!
The Doobie Brothers - Nobody Like English Beat, this was another playlist I was really looking forward to based on the few songs I know. Both groups I had been considering deep dives, on so I am glad to have a guide for those artists
The Waterboys - The Big Music Never heard of them before artists were posted, but based on how 80s was describing them, they were another I was really interested to hear. Great start.

Almost a full trend. Too bad he didn't go with The Meatloaf to go 5/5.

Eric Clapton #31:

Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps

I couldn't figure out where to rank this song. It could be my favorite on the entire list, but it is a Clapton list and it didn't feel right putting a Beatles song in the top 5. So I decided to use it to open my list instead. I ranked this song #1 on my Beatles list the last time there was a Beatles countdown in this forum. I don't think I even realized then that Clapton played lead guitar in the song, but that helps to explain why it was my favorite.

George Harrison and Clapton were friends, and they collaborated many times. Harrison wrote this song and wanted Clapton to play lead guitar to provide a more expressive, bluesy sound to complement the song’s emotional depth. From Wikipedia:

Harrison asked Clapton to play guitar on the track. Clapton, who recognised Harrison's talent as a songwriter and considered that his abilities had long been held back by Lennon and McCartney, was nevertheless reluctant to participate; he later recalled that his initial response was: "I can't do that. Nobody ever plays on Beatles records." Harrison convinced him, and Clapton's lead guitar part, played on Harrison's Gibson Les Paul electric guitar "Lucy" (a recent gift from Clapton), was overdubbed that evening. Looking Forward To Seeing You - I'm a Golden Smog fan so I look forward to the others.
Wake Up Romeo - never heard of this artist and I really enjoyed this song
Rode to Joy - big Oberst fan. Many can't get past his voice but I love his warble. And he writes some very painfully angsty lyrics.
Exhausted- another unfamiliar artist whose song I liked a lot.
Four Thousand Days - like I said up thread, I love Luna. So I expect to like every one on these playlists.
The Golden Age - I would have had difficulty whittling Beck down to 31 songs. I almost did Beck for MAD4. This song would've been higher on my list.

JML's own rankings are the real wild card here for me since he's from another side of the globe and I don't know which Redding resonates most outside of the U.S.

I don't care about all this mumbo jumbo. I'm glad Otis is a part of this and "You Left the Water Running" is a great start. It's one of those songs I wanted to share with someone once, cuz dat hook is so good, but I couldn't remember enough details to find it. Boy did I smile when I saw it on the list. Billy definitely could benefit from paring things down. Like KP, I agree that even Mellon Collie would benefit from a few less songs. Post Machina, an often heard comment on their albums are "a bit too long" or "would be much better with 3-4 less songs". Billy always seems to have grand ideas, some of which only seem to resonate with him, especially when it comes to the 3 album rock opera Atum, which is the only album(s) I could not get through. However, even on Spotify, the deluxe versions of popular albums include a ton of b-sides, which makes them tough to get through. Interestingly enough, their most recent album clocks in a at a slim 44 minutes for 10 songs and is a nice return to form imo.

It was a main reason i fell for them too. Iirc, he has a jazz background too.

Eta: snare sound aside, St. Anger made it clear how much Lars wails on his snare and how uncreative the drumming gets for them.

Yes, that's him! In high school he would try and get new sneakers when they would drop, and then he would flip them. If the drop was on a weekend, he would ask my sister and I to try and get some during a drop for him, too. It always seemed to time out on me when I'd finally get in to get them. He made enough money doing that to buy himself a new used car in high school. I think he did it his first year in college, too, for a little while.

Don't forget I'm the black sheep that went to ECU and not NC State like every one else in the family. I laughed when my nephew chose to go to the dark side. My sister said he was scared to tell my parents that he chose UNC. They didn't care, they were proud of him. He was accepted everywhere he applied, but Miami and UNC offered him a full tuition scholarship. He liked both schools, and it came all the way down to two days before he had to commit to pick UNC. I did notice that my parents never offered him tickets to any NC State home games against Carolina. I guess they didn't want a Tar Hole sitting in the Wolves Den. My nephew will start his first big job in September. It's in Dallas, TX, and I'm sure my sister will cry when they take him there to get settled in August.
