I’ve got my top 25 locked in for English Beat / GP / FYC. Now I just need to figure out how to pick the final 6 songs from a group of 20. This has been a hard one.

Trying to give the newish stuff an honest chance but it's been hard as I had such an emotional connection to the early songs that 2 or 3 listens of new song just can't match.

Agree 100%. Similarly, I’m going to have a handful of Marriott-led covers because he did some great ones that he made his own. Not going to shy away just because he didn’t write or originally record it.

I know I've beaten this drum to death, but covers are a lifeblood of popular music. As usual, I blame Jann Wenner and his merry band of imbeciles for perpetuating the myth that you aren't "an artist" if you don't compose all of your own music.

The English Beat Family Tree

In England, they’re just The Beat. In Australia, they’re called The British Beat. In the US and Canada, they’re called the English Beat.

They’re a mix of new wave, ska, reggae, soul, pop, and maybe even a little post-punk. Like a couple of my other MAD groups, they went through a number of changes - to the point of breaking up, forming new bands together, and even reforming in different iterations.

Dave Wakeling - vocals, guitar
Ranking Roger - vocals, toasting??, awesome dancing
Andy Cox - guitar
David Steele - bass
Saxa - sax
Everett Morton - drums

Breakup / New Bands
Wakeling and Roger went on to form General Public. Cox and Steele went on to form Fine Young Cannibals. Saxa and Morton even created the International Beat (sorry, couldn’t find anything worth including in my top 31). Roger (2016) and Wakeling (2018) each reformed their own versions of The Beat in the past 10 years.

This trio of bands were a big part of the soundtrack of my life throughout the 80s, and are a really fun deep dive for me this round.

My top 31 will focus just on the 3 main bands, otherwise my list would be 150+ long. Conor Oberst is an American singer-songwriter and musician, renowned for his influential role in the indie rock scene. Born in Omaha, Nebraska... At just 12 years old, he began his journey as a songwriter. By 13, he had already released his first self-produced tape, and by 15, he’d formed his first band—Commander Venus.

When he was 18, he dropped Letting Off the Happiness in 1998, and that’s when people really started paying attention. Since then, he’s put out ten Bright Eyes albums, two records and a handful of singles with his punk project Desaparecidos, eight solo albums (three with the Mystic Valley Band), and a ton of collaborations, including Mosters of Folk and Better Oblivion Community Center (with Phoebe Bridgers.) He’s written hundreds of song, so it was difficult to settle on any 31 to try to encapsulate him as a songwriter.

Oberst's music is deeply emotional, poetic, and introspective—often walking the line between folk, indie rock, and alt-Country. Oberst has often been called his generation's Bob Dylan, which is obviously a pretty lofty comparison. But I do think (save Elliott Smith) he might be the best lyricist of the last quarter century.

I don't like everything that Conor puts out, but what I like I usually love. "I'm Wide Awake and its Morning" is one of my favorite albums of all time. I was able to catch a Bright Eyes concert about a month ago and it was a great show. They have a new album out but none of those tracks will appear on my countdown (just haven't had enough time to give it the listens).

So for this round I will try and provide more of a cross section that encompasses all of Oberst musical endeavors. It will be a list of what I and think are his most listenable songs for those who don't know his works, and I will rank within that context.

They have a new album out but none of those tracks will appear on my countdown (just haven't had enough time to give it the listens).

So for this round I will try and provide more of a cross section that encompasses all of Oberst musical endeavors. It will be a list of what I and think are his most listenable songs for those who don't know his works, and I will rank within that context.

I was very into his music (as "Bright Eyes") when he first broke out but he somehow fell out of my rotation over the years. I'm looking forward to reconnecting and seeing what I've missed.

I was serious about this Arabic music thing in the other thread.

Some outrageous musicians playing instruments unknown. Lots of techno in the vibe. My newly discovered guilty pleasure. With a little effort I can come up with 30 worthy of our time. It's gonna take a bit more effort to isolate an artist, but a couple out of Egypt are worth a little research. Research I've been wanting to do.

Afaik no single artist has a library of 31 that interests me. The best are between 10 to 15 deep. I'll save modern Arabic dance/pop/trance for another time when I can mix up these DJs and bands. I'm weird I guess, but really enjoying this stuff. No idea what they sing about but it puts Euro EDM to shame with the inclusion of traditional vocals and creative musicianship. Trip hop didn't die, it went Arab.

Soooo, I think I'll do guitar virtuoso John 5. I've talked him up a few times going back over 15 years. I doubt I've mentioned him in a decade though. This gives me heavy access to Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie. Out of character for me but some fun stuff. Also his solo work. Also also potentially some country and bluegrass, maybe Rod Stewart, David Lee Roth, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Meatloaf, The Scorpions and Ricky Martin.

The first time I tuned into the station playing this music was on a late night desert drive, tired of playlists, and the first thing I heard was intense huge crowd noise. Cool, thought I, a live show. Then this band played an absolute stomp with the crowd singing along. I was hearing Hebrew, I thought. A Jewish station? Song finished. At least 50,000 went nuts like they were seeing the Beatles. Then another banging stomp with the crowd going nuts. WTH was this fun stuff? Know who popped in my head and the song it reminded me of? Your boy Neil and that traditional Jewish song he does. I don't know if I should spotlight it or not but it rhymes with Have a Tequila. Anyway, that's the sound and the energy. Had me dancing behind the wheel.
