Yes.

Mostly what drives me nuts is the obsession with watching other people play video games or play with toys. It is ****in' bananas. My oldest didn't care about Youtube, but the youngest found it, that's about all she wants to watch, it drives me crazy, so we had to remove the app from the TV and such because she was trying to sneak watch it. I wouldn't mind it as much if she was using it like a tool, as you described. I even suggested such things when she was bored - watch a video to learn to play the keyboard, for example. OR even if it was a quick watch to get a hint to complete a level of Mario - nope, just watching people do things she can be doing herself.
Yeah I still don't get that at all. I hated sitting with friends and having to wait my turn to play a video game so it's hard for me to imagine just voluntarily choosing to only watch. Then the unboxing videos, like who cares? If you want to see it , just FF through the video to see the end but why are watching this kid opening up a million pieces of some toy and making it? That stuff has not clicked me with me at all.

My guess knowing her about the video game thing - it's because it's hard and frustrating when you are starting out or just not coordinated for video games. More enjoyable for her (I'd guess most kids) to mindlessly watch people be awesome at a game than spend 30mins trying to clear one level like I did. I don't turn into grumpy "back in my day" old Dad often, but that is one.

0 clue on the watching people play with toys thing either, but I guess similar - easier to have somebody else imagine and play while you watch?

I am sure there are logical psychological explanations but since I don't have kids, I haven't really investigated. I do believe even the most maladaptive and destructive behaviors have a logical and biological root to them. So surely watching someone else play with a toy does as well.

I haven't either, just theorizing after watching my kids and friends . I mean, as soon as those "cheat" guides started coming out, I would use those to get through stuff fast. I was largely doing the same - path of least resistance and all.

It could also be as simple as watching people play with crap you don't have for a large % of people who might not have means and access to toys like in the video.

Sort of random but I always forget about how great Youtube is. Just watched Year of the Horse- a Sinead concert from 1990 and now watching the Big Thief set from Lolla. Youtube is one of the best modern creations, right?

Yes! I use it mostly for do it myself car and appliance repairs. Don't pay for it so the ads are a drag but still worth it.
Spoken like a couple of blokes without children. ;)

I like Youtube for myself, I HATE it as a parent.
Oh yeah I can only imagine. Is what they watch or how much they watch or both?
Most of my friends kids don't even watch TV shows or series any more, just you tube and tik tok clips
Honest question - how is their attention span?? ;)
Overall not sure as I don't hang around the kids much. I know of one girl for sure who has problems staying focused on stuff and has had to do summer school at least the last 4 years

Positive spin - 2 of my 3 boys have been engulfed in football content since just a few days after last season ended.
Negative spin - before the Hall of Fame game every second of it was on you tube.

Thankfully I have a tree covered back deck and a large yard to retreat to for most of the offseason, but our house isn't that big so...March and April were kinda rough.

1. F you for the bolded. Well, because it's true.
2. It's different because I say it is.
3. Watch about 10mins of these dumb people playing with doll videos my daughter was watching and you will be tapping out and begging for The Muppets. It was by far the worse offender of the two. 100% I would have watched the VG videos as a kid.

Daft Punk in general- htf have I not heard that song (or really listened?) before

Hey, if you've got the time, they're still looking for an audience. If you or anybody searches them out or thinks of this countdown when they hear them, then it's all worth it. It's worth it regardless, but that makes it more special. I'd encourage someone to listen to at least the album Discovery front to back if they're in any way, shape, or form a dance club mood. That's where I'd start. I wish I'd been able to write up every song, but life got really busy for me recently, so I wasn't able to do that. Like, there is this wonderful, feature-length anime cartoon that goes along with the album Discovery called Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem that was released to go along with each song off of it that I never even got to discuss. I hope my only sporadic involvement didn't detract from the overall experience.

@rockaction love the placement for your#2. I was getting nervous it wasn’t going to make the cut. It’s possibly my #1 for them.

Oh yeah, "Giorgio by Moroder" blew me away when I first (accidentally) made it through the song a bunch of years back. The first listen or two I'd just assumed it was an homage and interlude but that it wasn't really a fleshed out track. How dumb of me. Once I let it roll, it instantly became a favorite of mine. It just hits such heights, IMO. It could easily have been number one, but I think the number one I picked is fitting, though. It's the encore to the set!
Oh, I have that time. I think I said it before, but I do like and listen to a bit of Daft Punk (or at least I thought I did). There have been a couple surprises from you that I haven't heard before, and that is probably a function of not listening to full albums from them.

I will also admit that too often electronic or dance music is something that is on in the background or something I didn't choose, so I am not actively listening to it and absorbing it like these playlists have gotten me in the habit of doing. So 100% I will listen to Discovery with headphones on and when I am really listening to it.

So the link I included was naturally a live version of this because the album cut doesn't come close to doing it justice. This one is of course a ridiculous showstopper. He even opened up the Super Bowl with it -- and in this version he doesn't even start the song after the long intro for several minutes with the audience cheering "Ohh-oh-ohhhhh" along with him. He often calls it the story of the band, and in a way he's right, even though there are only two or three lines that really reference it:

Well a change was made uptown
And the Big Man joined the band
From the coastline to the city
The little pretties raise their hands
I'm gonna sit back right easy and laugh
When the Scooter and the Big Man
Bust this city in half...

He has a lot of great live songs. This is sublime. One of the best ones.

Good debate now on what artist to do for the next round. I think I have it to 3....really tough. What criteria are people using to try and nail this down?

Something I love and think at least one other person might as well?

For me a lot was some piece of discovery with each. I needed at least one overlooked or unheard album to dig into.

I want something from Michigan, which doesn't actually narrow it down too much. That might be my only filter I've decided on so far. I like your very open approach though- can't please everyone.

New-to-me or forgotten songs from #3 that I enjoyed included:

Ponta de Lanca Africano
Party of One
Lives
Los Angeles, I'm Yours -- one of their best so far, IMO
Inland Sea
Glosoli
Da Funk
Waltzinblack
Anybody Wanna Take Me Home
And Now the Waltz
Bad, Wicked World
Willie Nelson -- hilarious and yet so true that one of the few certainties in life is that Willie Nelson smokes killer weed
Almost Ready
You Don't Know Me
Pounding
Swing the Heartache
It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken'

The unveiling of Freewill as Higgins' #3 Rush song means that at least one of 2112, YYZ or Red Barchetta will not be in his top 31, to which I can only say

But what do I know. My top 31 Rush is likely to contain 8 songs that don't appear in Higgins' top 31 OR in Ghost Rider's top 50.
I noticed this as well. I’m down with whatever @higgins did here. He mentioned he was tight on time. I’d have left Freewill off personally, as well as Closer to the Heart and La Villa Strangiato. I saw YYZ appear, so that means no Red Barchetta or 2112. Did Natural Science show up? Sorry I lost track, life happens and all. Thanks to @higgins for a solid list no matter what. There’s a lot to choose from, and the stuff from Signals through Counterparts that got included was highly enjoyable.

Nope, but I can't think of anything offhand that at least one of us wouldn't dig, so that's not a worry either. I think like Pip said - in the end probably take something that puts enough of a fire in your gut to listen to and talk about for a couple months straight.

2's

The Story - favorite Brandi song! Such a banger.
Everlong - favorite Foo song! Can't pass up this opportunity to post this epic piece of television history
Golden Brown - favorite Stranglers song!
Feel Good - Gorillaz not really my thing but this is fun
Georgia on my Mind - timeless
I Summon You - another reminder of how much I like Spoon.
Tenth Ave Freeze Out - it seems like 3:10 is way too short for this song.
Rocket Man - another song I've probably underappreciated due to overplay

New to me that I especially enjoyed:
Firth of Fifth - not really new to me, but I don't I've given it a close listen before
July July
Heart in the Hand of the Matter - in contention for favorite from this band
Hoppipolla
Bad News
Stay Positive
There Goes The Fear
Ahead by a Century
Closer - not sure if I've commented on a deadmau5 song yet, but love the Close Encounters homage here

I have a couple in mind. Going to pick on what other people may not have had a lot of exposure to. But I am probably going to sit out next round. This has seemed like a chore to keep up with. I think it would be better if we did groups of ~25 at a time.

Ya know what was pretty awesome? Seeing Clarence's nephew taking the sax on the first tour after his death then immediately after 'the big man joined the band' line the lights went down followed by a 3 minute montage then when the house lights flipped back on Jake took the lead and went wild.

Natural Science has not shown up on Higgins' list.

You would cut La Villa Strangiato?

My Rush tastes are biased in favor of 1976-82.

So many good #2s! Let me get to it! Semi-shuffled, as I put the Chicago suite back together in order. Selected per usual, though I included a few more than “normal” this time just because.

*There Goes The Fear - Doves
*Breathe - The Prodigy
*Golden Brown - The Stranglers. Tommy the *** is praying. And if he isn’t, he {censored} should be.
*Aja - Steely Dan (/Donald Fagen)
*Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out - Bruce Springsteen. Enjoy this song already, and the live version only boosts that.
*I Summon You - Spoon
*Hold On Tight - ELO. As mentioned in the M-AD threads, this song gets stuck in my head in a good way. Very pleased to see it this high!
*Stay Positive - The Hold Steady
*Hoppipola - Siguor Ros
*To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High) - Ryan Adams
*Ghost - Clutch
*Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz (/Damian Albarn)
*Georgia On My Mind - Ray Charles
*Magic Man - Heart. A song I associate with Pavel Datsyuk as much as anything else. Still, good memories.
*Hitchin’ A Ride - Green Day. Basically what I said for Springsteen.

Maybe I shouldn’t be allowed to submit a new list. I haven’t participated in at least 15 rounds lol.

jwb didn't put his list in order of preference to begin with, and then he Binky'd himself and put his #31 as #1, etc., when inputting his list. So we really can't read anything into what on his list appears where.

PhishshukeHarry Hood

Lyrics of this song were inspired by the character for Hood dairy products. So the question begs, where does he go when the light goes out (when the fridge door closes).

I love the jamming and Trey's long note holds during the peak.

I would be remiss not to share video of "the Harry Hood kid", famous within the community for being caught on video enjoying the peak.
There were about 4 different genres of music in this song.

That was my criteria. It's why I didn't try to pick Queen. I know all that material. And why I did pick Slade. There was a bunch I hadn't heard. I got to learn stuff too.

And why I picked The Pointer Sisters for the next go. (I have four albums left. Then I move on to the Deep Tracks.)

Please consider still submitting a list if you have time for that. Posting about each selection and listening to each playlist is not mandatory, and the more music the better.

The Hold Steady “Realistic” Dream Setlist Song 30: Stay Positive

There's gonna come a time when the true scene leaders
Forget where they differ and get big picture
'cause the kids at their shows, they'll have kids of their own
The sing-a-long songs will be our scriptures

Album: Stay Positive (song 5 of 5)

Year: 2008

# of Times Seen Live: 23 of 38 shows

The Story: This not only encapsulates the whole THS ethos but also ties in tons of references from their first four records. I won’t bore everyone with all of them but one in particular made a lot of us think that The Hold Steady were calling it quits after this album - “ ‘cause it’s one thing to start it with a positive jam and it’s another thing to see it on through…” Positive Jam is the first song on their debut record, and now they’re saying they’ve seen it through. I’m so happy we were wrong, because even if they’ve never quite matched the first four records again, there’s still been tons more great songs and so many amazing shows.

Hold On Tight

For ELO, even though my list was mostly random, the last two songs were puposely placed. I meant them to lead off the list with the earliest then the latest (which kind of gives away the #1), but I put my list in backwards, so here they are at the end.

Hold on Tight wraps up the Time album, and is their last top 10 hit. It's as far as I went for my 31 as well - the next two albums are "meh" at best. But this is a great song, and takes their sound a little backwards - I could see this song exisiting in some form on some of their earlier albums. It has staying power too - I recently heard it on a commercial, and it certainly sticks in your head. I enjoyed it the first time I heard it, and I still like it a lot today.

#2 Back in Black (Back In Black)

This was a monster hit and cemented AC/DC as one of the biggest rock and roll acts in history. Unlike You Shook Me All Night Long, I have not got tired of hearing this one. If Brian wrote these lyrics he must have been guided by Bon’s spirit. :)

Rick Beato does a little analysis of what makes this song unique. Starting around the 2:00 mark of this video

More tidbits from my googling

“The band got the idea for the title before writing any of the song, although Malcolm Young had the main guitar riff for years and used to play it frequently as a warm-up tune. After Bon Scott's death, Angus Young decided that their first album without him should be called Back In Black in tribute, and they wrote this song around that phrase.”

“Bon Scott had several lyrical ideas for the album, but those were abandoned by the band in favor of new lyrics by Brian, Malcolm and Angus. Former AC/DC manager Ian Jeffrey claims to still have a folder that contains lyrics of 15 songs written for Back In Black by Bon, but Angus insists that all of Bon's notebooks were given to his family.“

Whether you believe the above or not, I guess is up to you.

“This was the title track to AC/DC's most popular album. It has sold over 19 million copies in the US, the 6th highest ever. Worldwide, it has sold over 40 million”

This plays in the opening scene of the 2008 film Iron Man, providing an aggressive intro to the Marvel Comic Universe movies. Other films to use the song include:

* Grudge Match (2013)
* The Muppets (2011)
* Megamind (2010)
* The Karate Kid (2010)
* Brüno (2009)
* School of Rock (2003)

It was also used on episodes of
* The Sopranos ("Cold Stones" - 2006) and Family Guy ("Peter Problems" - 2014).

“Kurt Cobain was given his first guitar for his 14th birthday, and this was the first song that he learned to play.“

1 song remaining and it is not a Brian Johnson song. In an earlier MAD thread I believe I mentioned what my favorite AC/DC song is and it's the one coming on Tuesday. Despite my list not being ranked, these last 4 songs are pretty much where I'd rank them.

It has staying power too - I recently heard it on a commercial, and it certainly sticks in your head. I enjoyed it the first time I heard it, and I still like it a lot today.
I like a lot of ELO and most every song you have posted. Not sure why, but I had forgotten about this gem. (y)

Angeles- Elliott Smith
from Either/Or Album

"I can make you satisfied in
Everything you do
All your secret wishes could right
Now be coming true
And be forever with my poison arms
Around you
No one's gonna fool around with us
No one's gonna fool around with us
So glad to meet you, Angeles"

You may recognize this one from the Good Will Hunting or The girl Next door soundtracks...This is a quintessential Elliott track. Such a beautiful and immediately recognizable opening guitar melody...How could anyone hear that fingerpicking and not instantly get sucked in to the beauty of this song? “Angeles” is a masterpiece that highlights all of Elliott's brilliance. It has the iconic finger-picked acoustic guitar arrangement, amazing songwriting, haunting melody, and a whispered vocal performance that hits so hard. As for what the song is about here is what Elliott said:

"Some people think it's about the city, some people think it's about the record industry, and some people think it's about a girl. And when I was making it up I was making it up about a feeling, you know, that could be a feeling you get from a city or from a person or from a situation. For me, my big kick when I was writing the words was not to make it about any one of those things exclusively and to try and make it so that it was about that feeling. It didn't matter what was giving you that feeling. It's just sometimes people get that feeling. At least I do." -- Elliott Smith (in an interview with Erik Pedersen)

I mentioned it before, but I have a hard time getting past the Hold Steady's vocals.

Not on Stay Positive though.

Good debate now on what artist to do for the next round. I think I have it to 3....really tough. What criteria are people using to try and nail this down?

I have a couple in mind. Going to pick on what other people may not have had a lot of exposure to. But I am probably going to sit out next round. This has seemed like a chore to keep up with. I think it would be better if we did groups of ~25 at a time.
Please consider still submitting a list if you have time for that. Posting about each selection and listening to each playlist is not mandatory, and the more music the better.
I listened to every playlist but only commented on about 70% of them--just didn't always have the time. And I didn't comment hardly at all about the songs I listed. I'm not very good at that sort of thing and it would quickly become very repetitive. If I have a personal story related to a certain song I might discuss it a bit but otherwise I just let the song speak for itself. To each their own.

And as far as picking my next artist, I have playlists for 4 new artists (and one old one---Spoon) already put together and I'm thinking about doing 2 more artists. The four I have done are from somewhat lesser known artists and the two I'm contemplating are relatively well known bands with many albums which makes narrowing it to 31 songs a lot more difficult. Tough call.

It's an absolute killer of a song. It's one of their best tracks without a doubt.
It is to me. My favorite waffles between this and "Highway To Hell" (I know "chalk" is boring around here, but kiss my pasty white butt). This thing is funky, nasty, lean, mean, and melts faces.
