So soon, I'll be asking everyone for their Round 2 artist selections. I will allow 7 days for people to give me those, Binky change his mind in those 7 days, 62 times.


How long after that 7 day period ends should I allow for people to create their 31 song lists? (20 minimum again)

2 weeks? 3 weeks? more?

Imma do like I did last time- crowd source options sometime after everyone else makes there selections. Me personally, I'd much prefer something closer to Oct 1. Highly unlikely I start even thinking about this til labor day weekend-ish, let alone working my way through a catalog to make a list.

So just checked the time stamps on the spreadsheet. First was 5/6, and last was 6/6, so it appears I gave a month to get artists 31 song lists in.

The one listed is the 12" version. Eyuck.

Ok, are you ****ing with me now? I am so confused.
When I searched by title, I see a 3:42 version on Cum On Feel the Noise, a 5:00 version from The Amazing something or other (which is on the Playlist), and then one listed as the 12" version that is 5:26.

This one. The image on the playlist said it was the 12" version. (I don't have Spotify.) If the selection is five minutes long, it's all good.

I'm going to go down the list of playlists and listen to most in order they are submitted. Some, like ac/DC and AiC at the top I'm going to listen to an album instead since I am quite familiar with most on their playlist.

I'm listening to High Voltage now and for Alice I think the album was Rainier Fog?

High voltage is a great album. I had 6 songs off that one although a few I linked the live version off If you Want Blood. Powerage is another less common one that has a number of solid rockers.

Somehow when I was looking at their stuff, I was oddly more familiar with Powerage. You took several off High Voltage, but 2-3 of my favorite new to me songs on your playlist were from High Voltage, so I wanted to listen to that album top to bottom to start off. Just a great album that somehow I guess I never dug deeper than the 3-4 main hits. I also liked hearing the album version of The Jack as well I forgot how "subtle" they were trying to be on that one. Thanks for the contribution - Ac/Dc was one I thought I'd mostly be skipping over on the playlist. Not because I don't like them, but because I thought I had a pretty good grasp on their older stuff. You managed to bring 6 or 7 that were new to me, and I liked the blend of live tracks on there. My favorite ended up being Rock 'N' Roll Singer. Absolute banger and perfect song for AC/DC that somehow I managed not to hear (or absorb) in my near 48 years.

About half way through Round 1, that's what I decided to do. I would fully listen to all the songs from those artists I really liked and a few new ones I liked. But there's like another ten new artists to me that I really liked and I decided to wait til now and listen to their entire list to get a much fuller experience of that artist.

This is a bit what I was doing as well, or I was more willing to forgo my loose rule of listening to them all with the headphones and attentive. About 1/2 way through it started to become clear which artists I didn't 100% dig and which would be playlist listens or deep dives. I'd make sure I'd catch all the songs that didn't know and all from artists that I didn't think I'd be spinning the playlists for.

It seems like a playlist every 2-3 days should be doable, but it adds up fast. I have little to do, work part time, and I felt behind many times.

Thanks. I'm really happy to hear you found some new songs you enjoyed. Like any artist who gets played commercially you tend to hear the same stuff over and over and forget about the rest of the songs. I tried to mix in a number of these in the hopes of surprising a few people.

The North America High Voltage release was a mix of 2 of their Australia releases (High Voltage and T.N.T) so kind of makes sense that it would have their best songs to that point. I also enjoy the album version of The Jack and debated which to include. Ended up going with the dirty Live version but the HV release has a great feel to it also. Little Lover is another I gave some consideration to but can't include every song .

I'm ok with whatever you decide - I do think a short breather where we can listen to some of these artists deeper (or just other music in general) before jumping back in is necessary - but personally I already have a list for three different artists basically ready to go.

The Story: For me, Killer Parties is less a song and more of a vibe, a celebration, just joy bursting out of the seams. A writer for Esquire sums it up better than I ever could:

In every last encore, Finn tells the crowd, “There is so much joy in what we do up here,” and while from someone else it could come off self-serving, at the end of a Hold Steady show, it is just a fact. A Hold Steady show is cathartic and ecstatic, a situation where you wind up arm in arm with a stranger, maybe two, definitely someone else’s beer down your front. The vibe in the crowd is joyful, communal, sweaty.

Back when THS used to play 200 shows a year, Killer Parties was a special occasion song, meant for nights where the band and the crowd were especially in sync - I only got it in 2 of my first 10 shows and Mrs. Scorchy went 0 for 5 to start. Now that they’re only doing 20 or so per year, it’s an every night thing, but it never loses its power. I still get goosebumps. Every single time.

Bonus Video: I get the sense that in the earliest days of THS, stage invasions were a pretty regular thing but died out once the band got out of the Brooklyn dive bars. Somehow, I’ve still managed to see two firsthand. The first one (linked below), I never actually jumped on the stage and regretted my lack of initiative for years. Six years later in Chicago, I got another chance, and uncharacteristically let myself go.

At the first show, I was against the rail on the right of the floor, and when Huey came out, two people emerged from the VIP area and stood next to me on the other side of the rail. I was like "where have I seen these people before"? It took me a few minutes to realize it was Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman.

At the second show, it was obvious that The Weight was unrehearsed, as Huey was singing from a lyric sheet and still had a rough go of it.

That's not one that I would use for one of these, mostly because it doesn't have that much material to mine. I knew of one side project, but not another, so I was interested in exploring those for myself and putting together a playlist as I explored.

Agree with all this. First Night is top 20 THS for me and BAGIA probably deserved to get a 5th song. When I was making cuts, I noticed that it hardly ever appears on the same setlist as Lord, I'm Discouraged so I went with the latter.

I know the Pretenders opened for GNR in NJ - but those other acts were not on the bill.

Looking at what I saw again, it was a general tour poster. (Guns N Roses with special guests...) So those acts are on the tour, but not all playing the same night. Still pretty odd.

Artists I Knew Well: (Say, 25+ Songs known)
The Police, Genesis, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rush, Green Day, ELO, Foo Fighters, Heart, Elton John

Heck, I still have albums from several of these groups. It was still great to hear these songs again! I just didn’t always have much to say beyond “yes I know and like this song” sometimes. Take an extra helping of <3 if you want.

Artists I Knew Decently (Certainly the hits, but not a deep knowledge):
The Kinks, Stevie Wonder, Warren Zevon, Damian Albarn, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel

Another M-AD thread showed I needed/wanted a Kinks deep dive, so I appreciate it here. Warren Zevon I mostly knew Excitable Boy (the album, thus also the song) and a few others, but there was a lot to discover. Stevie, Ray & Bruce I just never really dived deep into. S&G were probably the closest to the previous category, but there was still a lot of new ground here.

Lists that asked: What Do I Know about These Artists:
Taylor Swift, Chicago, AC/DC

Sure, I can name a handful of huge hits from each of these three. But that wasn't always what appeared on these lists. Disappointing? Perhaps. Yet also a welcome change. A Taylor who’s not saccharine and poppy. Chicago more experimental instead of telling me You’re the Inspiration. AC/DC who had a lot of hits in the list, but also a lot of surprises.

Artists That I Knew A Handful of Songs From (usually but not always the hits):
Todd Rundgren, Modest Mouse, The Decemberists, Donald Fagen, Daft Punk, The Stranglers, Slade, Phish, Frank Black, Clutch, Doves, Spoon, The Prodigy, Bauhaus.

Of these, Doves were the first one I adopted, eager for the playlist by “Ship of Fools” if not earlier. I also marked songs from The Decemberists, Frank Black, and Spoon, so I’ll at least be checking them out farther too. Probably Utopia and some of Todd Rundgren’s other work too.

Artists Where I Don’t Know Anything: (Well, “anything” is a bit of hyperbole for many of these. But I’m referencing a Mad Season song, so it’s appropriate.)
Jorge Ben Jor, Brandi Carlile, Trail of Dead, Sigur Ros, Big Thief, Elliott Smith, Ryan Adams, Dinosaur Jr., The Hold Steady, The Tragically Hip, deadmau5'

The Tragically Hip, THS and Elliott Smith are all definitely getting a few playlist listens. Heck, I’m going to try to give all of these a (second?) chance, though some just have priority. For lack of a better term. Not everything clicked, of course, but I still appreciate the exposure, and lists like this encourage more to go a little obscure. Maybe not next time, but eventually.
