Damon Albarn Song #31

Blur - "There's No Other Way" from Leisure (1991)

It's kind of funny that Blur, who came to represent the South in the Great Britpop wars, launched their career with a song that owed so much to the Madchester sound. They'd develop their own style soon enough but this song established a beachhead for their career.
Probably why it's among my top 5 Blur songs. It was a staple of my pre-goth clubbing days when the Madchester thing was huge.

I feel like I should've put a banger at the back end of my Brandi Carlile list with others coming out hot...I used the end of list slots to pigeon hole in a Christmas song, a country song, and a rare non-band performance. My list is more like a top 25 with bonus tracks.

Finally finished up the playlist on the fourth dog walk. Smogguys update: I wore a mask this morning (Baltimore) as did most of the kids I passed walking or riding their bikes to school. My big dog had no issues on the walk but my Boston Terrier had a breathing attack just sitting on the deck at lunch.

I wasn't taking notes or anything while listening so I may be forgetting something, but here's what stood out:

Stevie Wonder/Stevie Ray Vaughn/Ray Charles: For Stevie W, I only know the famous stuff. For SRV, my familiarity is limited to a kid in my freshman dorm playing his CDs non-stop in the days following the plane crash. As for Ray Charles, I know what he looks like behind a piano and saw the Jamie Foxx movie. Looking forward to furthering my musical education and can't imagine not liking anything that gets selected.

Chicago: would have never guessed that was Chicago

Clutch: you would think that after listening to Zilla talk about them for two decades, I would know what Clutch sounds like. The music itself was what I expected but the vocals were a total surprise.

Ryan Adams: in contrast to the last two, this is exactly what I expect Ryan Adams to sound like. Love the harmonies.

Trail of Dead/Big Thief: Never heard anything from either of these bands, and really dug both songs.

Green Day: Always liked Green Day but not enough to get into them. Fun song.

Bauhaus: I don't think I've heard this track since college. Thanks otb!

That's All is my mother's favorite Genesis song as well.
I can guarantee you that my mother didn't have a favorite Genesis song. Unless they were covered by Crystal Gayle or The Kendalls and I missed it.
OMG the Kendalls were the cheesiest sh!t ever. My dad’s business partner loved them and my sisters and I would howl with laughter whenever he put them on.

I'm not going to say anything that wasn't already said about Chicago's Hideaway. It didn't even resonate with me that it was them until past halfway through, just before I alt-tab'd over to hit the heart. No surprise this was the clear winner of scene #2 but I especially enjoyed Tragically Hip's My Music At Work, The Decemberists' Ben Franklin's Song (beautifully ridiculous), and Queen's The Show Must Go On (had no idea that was after Freddie's diagnosis).

Like scene #1 I was only familiar with one song in this set and it's the only Clutch song in my catalog. I'm looking forward to adding more, but Careful With That Mic sets the bar high. I think I'd be more familiar with them had they hit sooner, but alas I wasn't listening to much new rock music in the early aughts. Time to fix that!

It's been leaked that Sigur Ros' first new album in 10 years is dropping next Friday. Odds are I'll have to revise my list...
Kind of tough to do though. If you discover the 10th best SR song on the new album, it’s not going to bump off 31 but maybe song 26 or wherever we are by then.

I'm kidding about the re-ranking. It is unlikely though that all songs on the new album would rank lower than 31.

Are we planning to pause on weekends? May be a good idea to let most catch up?

Or is the idea to reveal everything and have the commentary take as long as it takes people to get through everything?

I think rushing through and having songs get left behind is worse than having this take a little longer.
I'm not going to post on Saturday. We will see how it goes, but I'm thinking Sunday night, Wednesday night and Friday night each week. Let's have fun with this. It's not like when I had to post 175 Beatles songs. Lol

I like this. I was pleasantly surprised to see no list posted today.

Showdown (good live version here from the aborted Zoom tour)

Excellent example of the "old" ELO sound, with those deep sawing cellos. This one is off their third album (On the Third Day), which saw them at a bit of a crossroads between the weirder early sound and a more mainstream sound. For a lot of rock guys it's their favorite ELO song (I think two already mentioned it as being their favorite by them) - it's got a pretty heavy sound, and a catchy chorus about it raining all over the world, but it's definitely not a pop song.

I remember flipping through the channels in the early 2000's and coming across the video above - it was on PBS. I couldn't believe it - I thought ELO was long gone and here Jeff was, putting a band together and performing (not the band, but a band - that's what ELO became - Jeff and a band. Maybe it was always that. Sometimes Richard Tandy, the original keyboardist, plays with him).

Anyway, it's a great song, and I'm glad my list got reversed because it's a good way to start.

It'd be unfair to say scene 3 was a letdown because it performed better than most playlists before this one. It started with 3 hearts, added 3 new ones, and I thought about at least a couple others. That would be a rousing success in any normal playlist, but this playlist was not normal.

While I will note the existing hearts (ACDC, Bruce, and Showdown) it was 2 of the new ones that left me craving more - Slade's We'll Bring The House Down (**** yeah!) and the epic by And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead. While my expectations are high for each of them going forward they are not for the other heart. For the first time in my life a Rush song is in my library. It kinda sounded like Geddy, but until I alt-tab'd over to smash the heart halfway through I thought it was someone else. See! I always approach these exercises with an open mind!

Overall, future playlists - good luck one upping this one. O Holy Night really was a perfect way to finish that ride too. Hopefully the FFA music nerds didn't blow their load this round!

I think the #31s in the geographic countdowns were excellent as well. I suspect in all cases, people wanted to start with something that would get everyone’s attention.

Thought I would open the list with something off his first two albums. It was from the group "Runt" though they both come across very much as solo singer/songwriter albums. Some rocking stuff and lots of ballads. If you like Something/Anything you would like these.

This style became too easy/boring for him and he changed dramatically in his approach after Something/Anything - which had some hard rockers on it as well.

So hard to pick "favorite" songs - it all depends on my mood and what I want to hear at the time - if I'm getting nostalgic and just want to chill - I'm headed for kind of Todd stuff.

What is it about Careful With That Mic that sets the bar so high? The music, the lyrics ,the rap style delivery or just how they all come together? Asking so I can get an idea of which of their albums to point you towards or what picks of mine you might like.

Ryan Adams probably put out 3 albums since we started.

I found deadmous interesting and soothing. I’m not sure how I’d be able to rank songs by him - but I’m interested to see the rest of the songs here. Probably not something I could really get into with heavy rotation, but may be cool to throw on in certain moods.

Music and delivery. Unless prompted, it takes a while once a song is in my catalog to pay much attention to the lyrics. This is both a blessing and a curse.

The head of IT is DJing. Someone requested The Crunge.
Probably not too many things that are more cringeworthy than seeing co-workers boogieing with Stu in accounting.
No boogie-ing. Food trucks, booze, cornhole, beer pong except with throwing volleyballs into barrels, and bingo (I didn’t win).
Bonzo would be proud - minus the cornhole, volleyball and bingo, I guess.
At the holiday party one year, our CEO did the Electric Slide with some other folks. I videoed it on my phone and sent it to a friend who was one of the sliders, who showed it to her son. He said “that doesn’t look very electric.”

Ok just quick impressions after a once through of these songs

The Stranglers- never heard. like a lot. Excited to hear more.

Modest mouse- top 5 MM song for me the "universe is shaped exactly like the earth" Issac Brock always brings the lyrics

Spoon- Like... know a couple songs by them. looking foreword to hearing more... could be right up my alley

Dinosaur Jr- just a great song. been in my rotation for ages.

Big Thief- know VERY little about them... of all the "new to me" bands. this one hits the best. really looking forward to hearing more.

SRV- how can you not love him. just so good.

Daft Punk- not my Jam, but can see why people like them

Jorge Ben Jor- No idea what is being said but I really like it. Catchy as hell.

Chicago- dont know this, but really liked it. not at all what I was expecting when I thought of Chicago

The Kinks- Never heard but really enjoyed this one.

Sigur Ros- Very Cool

The Tragically Hip- never heard- but really like

The Decemberist- This is a band I never think about, but every time I hear a song I'm like Damn they are good!

Ryan Adams- Just so damn good. does he write bad songs?

Phish- have never took time to listen to any of there stuff so Im intrigued, don't hate it
Clutch- Hell ya:headbang:

ELO- Showdown is such a great song. As Ive gotten older I am liking ELO more and more.

Alice in Chains- This is right in my 90s grunge wheelhouse. Will be following this list closely!

Will try and pick a few songs each round to talk about and hopefully give my thoughts on each band at least once or twice. Im really enjoying the exposure to bands I might not have ever heard of ( Big Thief, Sigur Ros, Jorge Ben Jor, Black Francis Etc.) and being reintroduced to some of the greats (Queen, ACDC, Elton John, Springsteen, Etc)

I'd never heard that song before, liked how he made his voice more delicate to match the tone of the song.

I thought you were doing Steely Dan? Don’t remember them on playlist.

I only picked 23.

I was working ahead a bit on write-ups, where I'm going to mention band members in some of them. I don’t think this is TOO obscure of a group, but at the same time I feel like I shouldn’t assume people’s knowledge of them. Thus, I decided to fill in some potential gaps. A few days late? Oh, almost certainly. Cribbing a bit from Wikipedia? Plausibly. But still hopefully useful to someone.

Let me explain Alice in Chains. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. Seattle. 90s. Grunge, a genre of alternative rock often defined as featuring intense vocals on dark and/or depressing songs. Hmm… yeah, this band’s guilty there. Still, this isn’t a band that sticks to a particular style or sound, featuring several genres of metal, occasional blues, and a good amount of acoustic even putting the Unplugged performance aside. Mostly I'll let the music speak for itself, though.

Personae Dramatis: (aka band members)
Layne Staley (singer, occasional guitarist, 1987-2002)
Jerry Cantrell (lead guitar, vocals, 1987-present)
Sean Kinney (drums, backing vocals, 1987-present)
Mike Starr (bass, backing vocals, 1987-1993)
Mike Inez (bass, backing vocals, 1993-present)
William Duvall (rhythm guitar, vocals, 2006 - present)

There’s a decently high chance that everything you’ve heard (before my #31) is with Layne. I won’t delve into Staley’s addiction to heroin (or death in 2002 due a mix of that and cocaine) too much here. It shows up in the music a fair amount, even with a few of the more prominent songs about the subject not making the list. Mike Starr also died of a drug overdose, though that was in 2011, well after he’d left the band.

But let’s end on a more positive note. I could’ve composed this list almost entirely of songs that hit the Top 35 of the US Mainstream Rock list for singles. And yeah, that’s surely most of my (or any list), but I threw in a few curveballs too. Regardless, the point’s made. Popular (in some regard), influential, maybe putting out another album eventually. Hope you enjoy the ride!

By the late 90s, Zevon's career had diminished to the point where he couldn't afford to hire a band when he toured. He wrote this song and several others for the Life'll Kill Ya LP intended to be played live with just an acoustic guitar and a harmonica.

Born to Run coming in at 30 or is that just this live version or does it represent the entire song? I guess we will have to wait to see but it’s interesting. Hadn’t thought of it.
