Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (2 Viewers)

Wtf- my dad just called me that he found my cat dead in the laundry room. :crying:
Young boy, not sick, I didn't get a goodbye. I have no words.
Oh man that sucks :(. Sorry for your loss and hope it doesn't ruin your trip
Wife is at work, and I have to make that call soon. As a veterinarian she is used to death more than I am, but I don't know how they manage to deal with it when it their own pets.

Sorry about the cat, Karma.

This thread has taken some interesting turns along the way...deceased pets, weed, medical issues, travel.

I have been to the metal burger place! Another great food spot on my radar is Chicago Diner which is vegan but truly impressive in the realm of phony meat plates.

Forgot to say, I'm with you 100% on the Chicago Diner. When I was vegetarian, I took carnivores there all the time, and they loved it (as did I when I was carnivore).

There must be some great music playing somewhere while you're there...

The Kinks (though I hadn't encountered it until the Dummies threads)
I wasn't part of those previous Dummies threads. I should probably go look through them. I have no idea how my list might stack up against previous selections on this board.

The Kinks were the #8 favorite artist in the British Isles countdown and had 15 different songs selected. I'll keep a running list to compare yours to the middle-aged dummies. I can't remember, were yours in order of what are your favorites, or some other order?

So far you have one that made the M-AD list.

1. xxxxx – 6 votes for 148 points (NOTE: points were calculated by giving 31 points to each person's #1 song, down to 1 point for their #31 song. This song, for instance, had two #1 votes, one #2 vote, one #4 vote, one #15 vote, and one #21 vote. It was the tenth-favorite song overall from any artist.)

2. xxxxx – 2 votes for 60 points

3. xxxxx – 3 votes for 59 points

4. The Village Green Preservation Society – 2 votes for 57 points Galileo #21

Green Day/Viva La Gloria - Back in 93/94 I would have never guessed their staying power. Great stuff here.
Unlike most of this list I intentionally stacked the next song on this record, Restless Heart Syndrome, immediately after the 2nd Gloria (there is another track named similarly early in the album. I enjoy each song individually, but even moreso when back-to-back amidst the story arc as this is when the narrative shifts away from the explosive Christian's demons to Gloria's.

Any websites or local rags you recommend for seeing what's happening during the time I'm there? I'm sure I can check out songkick or some such. Haven't planned for much yet. Most work nights I'll be laying low, unless there's something I can't resist... but I do have a full weekend much like I did in Cleveland, and I will try to get to 'The Empty Bottle' for the Say Sue Me show which I happened to stumble on, in a bandcamp email I think, unless it sells out, that's the night before I travel home so I don't mind staying out late-ish. Saw them in SF a few years back and they were fun. Great guitarist.

For starters, you can barely buy any- out of state limit for edibles is 250mg. A 500mg cart will run $50-60/each. And they tax the crap out of it. My last run to Illinois i got 1 cart and 250mg of edibles and I'm pretty sure it was $200.

2 months ago I finally got to run up the the U.P., spent about $400, maxed out on edibles, and got 6-7 carts. As far as I can tell, MI is easily the best state in the Midwest, probably until you get to Colorado. Otherwise it's medical only or super expensive like Illinois.

I won't taunt you with California prices.

I've counted eleven dispensaries within a 1/2 mile radius of my house in SF. It's too many; I'd gladly trade two of them for a bakery and shoe repair but that's not how capitalism works.

Please don't, my dumb *** will probably attempt a road trip. Lol

Protomartyr are playing something called Thalia Hall.. that's tempting. Going to guess neither of my mystery cohorts would want to join me for that one.

They're playing in SF tonight
Are you guys going? I've never seen them, and don't know a ton of their stuff, but I'm sure it would be worth it..

I don't think I ever made it to that venue, The Chapel... but it's possible I've forgotten a lot

I listen to Spoon here and there - less than I should at least. After this that will change. Maybe he the best rock band no one really talks about.
Doesn't matter but I went to high school with that cat, saw him play with his band The Zygotes which also featured our history teacher on drums. I didn't really know him. When we were freshmen we had a PE type class together and he was kind of a dork like me, but by the time we graduated he was the king of the alt rockers/new wavers

It's still kind of a trip to think that he really does front one of the best bands of our generation..

We saw them w/ Preoccupations in Dec 2018. Good show. Not going tonight because Mrs. E is getting over a sinus infection. She'd go if we had advance tickets but it's probably better to lay low.

The Chapel is a great venue. It's a former mortuary on Valencia with high ceilings and great sound and ventilation. Capacity is around 500.

I should say something about Trail of Dead's fourth record Worlds Apart, which includes "The Rest Will Follow" and two more tracks on my list. An uneven and overinflated affair, it followed their much loved Source Tags & Codes and a subsequent EP. I think it appeared they got out over their skis a little, sonically speaking, and even the Keely-designed (always) cover is a jumbled mess. In listening to the songs I chose - and my personal faves might not necessarily be considered the best songs on it - one might get a sense of maybe they should have dialed it back some. There's some great stuff on the album for sure, and nothing I'd call terrible by any stretch, but there are some things I still roll my eyes at, and often think "this song would be better without ______".

We'll circle back at the end and see where Pip and I (and anybody else) align on this one...

Here they are playing our #21 live on Letterman except Paul was hosting either because Dave had shingles or had been banging his assistant, who can recall?

Up next, we're dipping back into their most recent effort

wow...you don't need to do the leg work, but thanks. My list is in order of favorite at #1, but as I have said previously, I could easily swap out the bottom half of my list with any of my next 30ish Kinks songs and I would feel perfectly comfortable with those selections in the top 31 as well. Maybe I should have chosen a different artist here. I didn't realize they has been picked over pretty well already. That's OK, while my #1 won't shock anyone, I suspect there are a few selections in my top 5 that will raise an eyebrow or two and there are some classics that I left of the 31 list that I would bet are part of that list from the MAD British Isles.

Ugh. Sorry about your cat, KP. I hope you and your wife are able to come to terms with his passing. Wow, that's difficult to get that call.

I like The Rest Will Follow song. Their drumming has stood out to me in several of their songs. Do they usually play with two drummers?
As far as I know the whole "two kits" thing, ala Oh Sees, didn't last long but you can definitely hear it in a lot of the music they put out, including for instance 2022's "Taken by the Hand". I don't think they toured with two drummers actively playing for very long, if nothing else because it doesn't always make financial / logistical sense.

The #2 guy in the band, Jason Reece is technically the drummer but switches back and forth between the kit and up front with a guitar when he's singing. In their heyday it was Conrad Keely who would take his place on the kit for those songs, but from what I can tell in the more recent clips he's rotating with another member of the band who was also a multi-instrumentalist. You will see some other percussion instrument like bongos in play as well.

It's said the band is broken up now so I may never get to see them in their older and poorer years. It has been said that the band broke up before however, I think it's all up to the whims of Mr. Keely.

I hope that answers it, honestly I only can tell from what live clips I've managed to see on Youtube while I was pulling this together

There is one song from Worlds Apart that I feel very strongly about. Hopefully that will show up.

I hope to not let you down but there's a healthy chance that I might

I said the same thing during the DI album draft after listening to a couple of their albums then. Between constantly doing drafts and research and then listening to playlists I kind of forgot about them. Looking forward to adding the finished playlist to my library.

At my 2002 show, they were a four-piece and Reece played drums except on his own songs, on which Keely played drums.

At my 2004 and 2006 shows, they were a six-piece and had two drummers on some songs. Reece floated between drums and guitar (and in at least one case would just sing and do the Vedder/Bono frontman climbs on stuff thing).

Been a rough couple days, so can’t do more of a dive into my thoughts for the 21s, but some great songs all around. Was a nice distraction.

Probably good for my mental health the Elon finally blew up Twitter to keep me from doomscrolling so much.

What'd he do? I adopted really late and probably won't know the difference, but I was getting used to using it for fantasy football.

Never mind. I see what he did. That's pretty lame.
