I’ve included the live version of this one off of If You Want Blood as it’s the first track and a perfect concert opening. I love feeling the crowd’s anticipation of the impending onslaught to the ears. This song has to be played loud.


Powerage is one of my favourite Albums by the band and the first with new bassist Cliff Williams. Released in 1978. I still enjoy listening to this when I’m in my car driving by myself. No real duds amongst the 9 songs.

Just got back to the hotel after spending all morning at the RRHOF. I wish I could have shared pics with you all as I was going along!

It was a moving experience for sure, for those of our ilk

I‘m taking a sabbatical from work in July, and was planning on taking a solo road trip for part of it up to Canton to see the Football HoF and some of the Presidential history sites in northern Ohio (because I’m nerdy like that). I was thinking about working a Guardians game into it (spending a night in Cleveland on my way from Garfield’s home in Mentor to Hayes’ home in Fremont, OH). Reading this, I may have to try to see about adding a day to include the Rock and Roll HoF on the itinerary.

Some listening:

The Decemberists (kupcho1) "Ben Franklin's Song" - How could a patriot dislike this song? I don't dislike it at all!
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (plinko) "Opera Obscura" - I loved it. Driving, guitar-driven rock. What's not to dig?
Heart (Doug B) "Alone" - This is that '80s Heart that I remember from my youth. Ann can really sing. I like their '70s output, too.
The Hold Steady (scorchy) "Spices" - Dig it. If this the later-period slump every band hits, I can be convinced that their earlier stuff is something to revel in.
Clutch (Raging weasel) "In Walks Barbarella" - This has an Ohio Players or Tower of Power feel to it. Not what I expected at all. I then moved on to one of their most played songs. This is a trippy, space rock band, isn't it? I'm gathering that from the song "Spacegrass" and the song titles and delivery of these past two song. I had no idea, really. I thought they were like Helmet. Well, let's rock!
Warren Zevon (worrierking) "Detox Mansion" - Okay. This is Zevon with an '80s sound. These lyrics are pretty withering.
Bauhaus (otb_lifer) "Paranoia" and "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything" - Not totally sure what to say. I liked the breakdown chant of "Paranoia, hey" at 3:00 of that song and I like the full-on other song.
Phish (shuke) "RIft" - I know this song very well and never owned the album. It was always playing in our collegiate halls. It's a great song, IMO. I always liked Phish, just never all culty-like like some of their more ardent fans. Junta is actually probably my favorite album by them, or at least the one I know best. Man, can these guys ever play! Really enjoying this.
Sigur Ros (Scoresman) "Hafsol" - This is post-rock. If this moves Scoresman as much as Explosions In The Sky moved me back in 2003/4, then God bless and I have nary a negative word. This is rather beautiful and I can see its acclaim among a fervent fan base. Very awesome. I'm not as sold on the falsetto as others, though. But still wonderful. Gotta stick around for the loud/loud dynamic at 6:30 when the guitar and strings come in. Imperative that a listener make it that far. That's the thing. If you're going to give this stuff a chance, you've absolutely going to have to buckle in for the whole ride. Anything else is disappointing.
Green Day (MAC_32) "Brat" - "Mom and Dad don't look so hot these days" Finally we hit Green Day I know. I always liked the song -- it's great power pop -- but the subject matter was saddening.
Queen (Snellman) "Friends Will Be Friends" - Nice sentiment. There are other Queen songs I love, but we're only at twenty-nine here. Good track. Somehow the follow-up on my Spotify was "Boys Don't Cry" by The Cure, which is tough to beat.

Plausibly the most intriguing trio today was The Prodigy/ The Stranglers/ Simon & Garfunkel
Also some <3 to today’s selections from Chicago, Stevie Wonder, Bauhaus (hitting one of the few songs I knew from them), Modest Mouse, and The Hold Steady.

Random thoughts about some of the #29s I know:

I was wondering if Binky was going to put Todd's Hideaway at #31 to coincide with Chicago's Hideaway. The album it comes from (The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect) is unusual in that its most famous song sounds so different from the rest of it that I think of it as an almost separate entity. Of the songs that actually represent the sound of the album, I think Hideaway is the best. I've always found the line "Everybody's looking for a Heaven on Earth / A slice of paradise where nobody gets hurt" to be extremely endearing.
Walking in Your Footsteps is one of the most interesting songs on Synchronicity -- it uses the contemporary production devices to perfection.
Dodo/Lurker is one of my favorites from Abacab. One of my high school classmates used to blurt out "Fish he got a hook in his throat, fish he got problems" at random times.
Ghost of a Chance is one of my favorite post-Moving Pictures Rush songs. It's one of the band's best melodies and one of Geddy Lee's best vocal performances.
You Haven't Done Nothin' is a top 5 Stevie song for me. I have great memories of it on the car radio as a child (obviously at the time I had no idea it was about Richard Nixon). I took it in the 18th round of a soul/funk/R&B song draft on another board, knowing people who wanted to grab a Stevie song early would opt for something like Superstition, Living for the City or Higher Ground instead of this.
Rift is an excellent album opener. It's kind of manic but never gets out of control. It was actually created from the original coda of The Curtain, Shuke's #31 song. In 2000, the original coda returned for most (but not all) performances of the song and those versions are called The Curtain With.
Sweet Talkin' Woman is in my ELO top 5, as is their other "Woman" hit.
I don't know a whole lot of Dino Jr. material, but I did own Green Mind, Where You Been and Without a Sound, and Thumb was probably my favorite from all of them. It's nice respite of spacey psychedelia surrounded by noise.

5) With the classic line up, Following this they onky had a hit with another cover and 2 redone old songs. Ideas were gone as the two frontmen werent getting along. They continued to have a few minor chart hits with the bext singer once Cornwell was gone, but they wont be included here.

Today's Jorge Ben Jor song was my favorite of his thus far. The interplay between the guitar and bass works really well.

Today's Modest Mouse was not at all what I was expecting from them -- it really does sound like they were performing it and/or you are supposed to listen to it under the influence of dramamine. I thought it was one of the post-rock bands until I looked at the running order of the playlist.

Sigur Ros (Scoresman) "Hafsol" - This is post-rock. If this moves Scoresman as much as Explosions In The Sky moved me back in 2003/4, then God bless and I have nary a negative word. Thanks. In my countdown, this song by far has the most falsetto. There may only be just one or two where the entire song is falsetto like this. This is by far the most frequent comment I get when I try to introduce people to the band. The falsetto can be a bit much. I get it. It took me a while to get into it too.

That said, you are spot-on about riding out the entire song. There are many that have the payoff "explosion" like that.

#28 however, is going to be another with structure!

I remember you inquiring after I posted the number of songs that I had from A Tábua De Esmeralda — today’s was on that album (and first one in my top 31 from it). So, glad you liked that one, as there will be a bit more from that album.

The Decembrists song is great. Fantastic melody, fantastic vocal, fantastic use of organ.

I never really knew what to make of TOD's Elena's Tomb EP -- the first thing fans heard after the masterpiece Source Tags and Codes -- and Intelligence is certainly part of the reason why. In contrast to almost everything else they ever did, it has a dance beat in spots -- but also shouty vocals and bursts of noise. Many of the band's contradictions are encapsulated in this one song.

Ghost of a Chance is one of my favorite post-Moving Pictures Rush songs. It's one of the band's best melodies and one of Geddy Lee's best vocal performances.

Also some of Neil Peart's best lyrics.

I like No Name #3 best of the Elliott Smith songs so far. Especially for the guitar parts.

Wow - round of #29 was my favorite so far from start to finish. Can’t wait to see what comes next.

JBJ - really digging this. Love the use of the instrument that sounds like you’re pulling a straw through the lid of a fountain drink.

Police - love this song. This will be a great playlist.

Modest Mouse - haven’t heard this before. I liked it.

The Decembrists - I really liked this. Sounds like if They Might Be Giants decided to sing a regular/normal song.

Trail of Dead - definitely different from the other selections so far. Gives me a Nine Inch Nails vibe.

Rush -

Sigur Ros - this song sounds like Iceland

Chicago - I get The Beach Boys influence on this one.

ELO - takes me back to when my friend down the street and I would sneak into his older brothers room when he wasn’t there to listen to his records. Loved this.

Clutch - we go from a Limp Bizkit diss track, to Johnny Cash singing a Doors song, to this hard bluesy rock song (which I like). What’s next?

The back-to-back-to-back trio of Doves, Spoon, and Foo Fighters was divine.

Heart - my favorite of their later 80s work. How can you not sing along?

Tragically Hip - I liked this. Totally new to me.

Lots of other great stuff throughout that I didn’t mention.
