Mike Anderson = Steal of the 2005 draft (1 Viewer)

Maybe Bell didn't get any looks tonight when it mattered because Shanny actually thinks that Anderson gives the team the best chance to win?

Maybe Shanny listed Anderson as the #1 RB in training camp and essentially all preseason, since the starters will rest next week, because Shanny actually thinks that Anderson gives the team the best chance to win?

Maybe Tatum Bell is a little more raw than many casual fans cared to acknowledge, where speed is the ONLY attribute he possesses that Anderson does not, and Shanny actually thinks Anderson's wealth of skills outweighs Bell's speed?

Maybe Anderson is a heck of a lot better back than Reuben Droughns, and the fact that Bell ate into Droughns' playing time should not be expected when considering Anderson this year.

Food for thought.
Did you not notice the speed of MA during the 93 yarder TD where noone caught him from behind until the last lunge? I guess he has enough game speed for the NFL. :towelwave:
Actually you are correct, and I did see the run. Anderson was the same way when he went for 1,500 yards, not blazing speed but fast enough. My point was that Bell is a 4.3 guy, and FF players drink the Kool-Aid when it comes to speed. Anderson isn't as fast as Bell, but as you point out, that doesn't really matter now does it?

Pulled the trigger, got him with the 5.11 spot. If he keeps the starting job great value, great trade bait also to either the Bell owner or other teams. Wished I was able to grab him where I had targeted him before he blew up this evening. So now I haveJulius Jones Tiki BarberMike AndersonDarrell JacksonMichael ClaytonTime to go Qb shopping!!!

For what it's worth, Anderson went in the 9th round to two staff teams (Wood got him at 9.11) in the Survivor Leagues.Yudkin is the overwhelming favorite to come out of League 2. He probably had the best team before the Mike Anderson surge, and now he's just loaded.Very, very curious to see where Anderson and Bell are drafted moving forward. I think Anderson's stock will simply continue to rise from here on out. Maybe tomorrow a fourth round pick, but by the time the last drafts are done in September, he'll be going in the second round.

Interesting Factoid:As of right now, only 3 FBG's staffer's have Anderson ranked higher than Bell in their Real Time rankings, Bell is a full 15 slots ahead of Anderson on average and, perhaps most interesting, 3 staffers fail to put Mike Anderson ANYWHERE in their top 50 RB's. The highly coveted Vernand Morency is in 2 staffers top 50 where Mike Anderson is left out.

Mike Anderson just did exactly what Shanahan hoped he would do...he just kicked the door down and clearly is the #1 RB if there was any doubt before.

Where does Mike Anderson go in re-drafts tomorrow?

Is Mike Anderson now a possible 5th rounder?
LOLMike Anderson will go in the second round of some drafts now. In most shark leagues he should be a third rounder, and in leagues where not everyone can stay current, he'll fall to the fourth.
Hillarious...guy goes from an 8th round steal...to a 2nd rounder now. If he runs for 1,200 yds and has 8-12 TD I can't fault owners for taking him early now.

Am I the only person who believes that Mike Anderson isn't durable enough to last the entire season? Hasn't he been dinged on and off since the start of the 2001 season? I know he's played fullback, but I find it interesting that nobody brings that up when talking about this guy.
Well, lets go through the history of the Denver running game since 2000:In 2000, Terrell Davis was all set to open the season as the starter before getting hurt. This is the season when Mike Anderson exploded on the scene.

2001: Terrell Davis returned from injury, and was anointed the starter for sentimental reasons, not a knock on Anderson. Davis got hurt on and off for the season, and this was the last year that no back surpassed 1000 yards in Denver.

2002: This was the year Portis was drafted, and exploded onto the scene.

2003: Portis again

2004: Last season, Mike Anderson got hurt before the season started, and Droughns came on the scene after Griffin and Bell also went down

So, Mike Anderson has never been benched for ineffectiveness. He's gotten hurt a couple of times and given way to Terrell Davis as well. But he's never performed poorly, so Bell owners will have to hope for an injury or Anderson will be the man all season.

i drafted anderson with the 1.10 rookie/vet draft today in my leagues dynasty draft. might be the SOD.

Anyone have advice on how to play the Den RB situation in an auction draft? Do you burn the $$$'s on both, lets say total $ equivalent to the player value at the RB11 or RB12 spot? The only downside I see is if we have the old "Player A will start" and instead Player B gets the bulk of the PT that week.

I agree that Mike Anderson was the steal of the draft...back when I got him a month ago in the 18th round. The problem with bandwagons, though, is that the more people hop aboard, the pricier the tickets become. For what it's worth, here's my thoughts on Mike Anderson and how he'll finish the season:Droughns, as has been noted, was RB14 in FBG scoring last year. Droughns didn't start until week 4, as well, so that's RB14 despite really only 12 weeks of production. What's more, Droughns wore down as the season wore on, and had to be spelled more and more by Tatum Bell.Anderson has already performed for a full season. He has demonstrated enough to me that I am convinced he is not the type of back that will wear down as the season progresses. Further, he is much more talented than Droughns. I don't see Bell eating into his carries at all, except, as he did tonight, when Anderson needs a breather and taps Bell in for a couple of plays. Many people project that Bell will outperform Anderson at some point and win the starting job. My response is this: Bell has had 2 months to outperform Mike Anderson. And he hasn't. He's had all of training camp. He's had all of preseason. He's the highest drafted RB in Mike Shanahan's career, so Shanny has a vested interest in seeing him succeed. It's not like he's in Shanny's doghouse, Anderson has just quite simply been outproducing him. And I don't expect that to stop during the season for any reason at all. The job is Anderson's to lose, and if he does lose it, Bell hasn't shown that he's able to take it.All of that said, it's a well documented fact that Denver's running situation is one of the best in the league. Like I said, Droughns was 14th in the league despite only playing decent time in 12 games. Add to this the knowledge that Anderson is the week 1 starter, and isn't likely to lose the job based on performance, and you have the makings of, not only a top 10 back, but a top FIVE back. I downgrade that a little bit because of age and injury concerns, but I don't like betting on injuries in fantasy football. I'll still take 8-10 backs ahead of him, just because of the security that they offer, but Anderson is not a risky pick, like some project him to be. He's old, but not appreciably older than Martin, Dillon, or Holmes, and he's significantly fresher than those 3. He's proven himself over a full season, unlike McGahee and the Joneses. He has a ypc, which indicates that his success wasn't really a fluke. If I were drafting in a vaccuum, I would have no compunction against pulling the trigger on Mike in the second round. He answered whatever lingering questions I might have had tonight.Reality is, though, that we don't draft in a vaccuum. Realistically, I think the third round is a good place to target Anderson, because there's a good chance he'll fall. Anderson might be higher on my rankings than Julius Jones, but I have a much better chance at landing both players if I take Julius Jones first.

I picked up Anderson on **Waivers** in May.:)Can't beat that![basically, I read a quote by Bell in May that said Anderson was number 1 going into training camp. Milliseconds later he was on my team... ]

I wouldn't touch Anderson EARLY.. Too many concerns throughout the year. How will he hold up each week? injury at his age is a concern with the pounding.. Look at Priest now.. Sorry but he was good value mid to late in drafts but to take him 2nd or 3rd I will pass. Then pounce on Bell in the 5-7 rounds. This is the time where sharks no how to react.

Anderson did look impressive yesterday but i believe that Dayne would have looked equally impressive and Bell even more impressive.Denver has played against poor run defenses thus far.Anderson should and will start the season as the starter but I don't see this lasting.Tatum Bell is the most explosive back on this team. Anderson will not be able to be this successful against better defenses. Bell has the talent, speed and explosiveness to succeed against the better defenses.Every year a few RBs look great in preseason. I remember James Stewart looking great in preseason his first year with Detroit.Stop drinking the Anderson Kool Aid.Bell will have this job by midseason and have a huge 2nd half.

If you were told Anderson would keep the job (I think he will) and stay healthy. You could make an argument that Anderson should be taken in the late 1st round.

From the looks of the above, I guessing you'll be spending a high pick on Anderson's back-up?

I would be surprised if Bell fell past the 3rd round...

I think that there will almost always be at least one guy drafting from a magazine that hasn't been following the offseason very closely and pulls the trigger in round 2 or 3...

Maybe even higher if he's drafting from Fantasy Football Index...
:goodposting:

So Bell would have looked more impressive than 180 total yards, 12 yards per carry, and 2 TDs in one half of football? I'd like to see that...Why exactly does Tatum have the talent to succeed against better run defenses? Last time I checked, Tater had 2 pretty good games in his career. 17-123 and 9-50. Coincidentally (or not), those games came against the torrid (sarcasm) run defenses of Miami and Kansas City.Meanwhile, Anderson HAS actually started against good run defenses before and done well.If Bell couldn't beat out Anderson in camp, and couldn't beat him out in the preseason, how exactly is he going to beat him out while sitting on the bench in the regular season?

Mike Anderson equals fools gold? Even if he had 12 carries for 36 yards last night, that's not what's important. This was the 3rd preseason game. Shanny always plays his starters for 3 quarters and uses it as the final tune-up of the preseason, before resting everyone in the 4th preseason game and letting the backups battle for roster spots. And what happened in the third preseason game? Anderson got 13 carries in three quarters. Where was Tatum Bell? Well, he got one carry on a play where ANDERSON TOOK HIMSELF OUT to get a breather (running for 12+ yards per carry can tucker a guy out, you know?), and he was very active on punt coverage.Just looking at the number of carries during the first 3 quarters (Anderson 13, Bell 1, everyone else 0) absolutely demonstrates that the starting job is his (like it has been since June, but apparently nobody wanted to believe it). And according to Shanahan's history, the RB position will REMAIN his until he gets injured or he really becomes ineffective for several consecutive games. As long as I remember, the only Denver RB who has been benched for ineffectiveness over Shanahan's tenure is Quentin Griffin last season, and even then it took a game-losing fumble on the goal line. For all of those who point out that the guy who has started as the Denver RB for the season never FINISHES as the Denver RB for the season... Denver's RBs rank second in the league in PPG over the past several seasons, behind only Kansas City. Speaking of Kansas City, when was the last time that the guy who STARTED as the RB for the season FINISHED as the RB for the season? I guess now we're going to be drafting Larry Johnson ahead of Priest Holmes based on that little tidbit, right? Oh, and Priest Holmes is no longer worth a 1st rounder, right? I think we should all start targeting him in the 6th, just like Anderson. :boxing:

Why do people talk about Tatum Bell as if he were the next OJ Simpson or something? If he was that great wouldn't he have beaten out the 32 year old Mike Anderson a long time ago? There is clearly something that Denver doesn't like about him. I take Denver at face value when they say Anderson is their man.

People like him because of the system. There is the pretense that you can plug any RB into the Denver system and they will put up numbers.I'm don't think many people would like him if he were on another team.

He's 32 in a plug and play system with a couple of knee injuries and drug issues under his belt... Shanny should be fired right now for even starting him during preseason. I would want Dayne starting over him if I was a Broncos fan. At least he could last a few years.

The last FBG who posted a ranking (earlier today) had Bell at #29 and MA at #33. Really curious to see the next several rankings.
Things that make you go mmmmmmm. That same FBG has rated the backs today (yesterday's entry has mysteriously disappeared) and has MA at #22 and Bell at #35. Will that be typical or will MA crack some top 20's?

Maybe you haven't been paying attention to the numbers that Denver's RBs have put up the last 10 years or so. That's the only reason people want in on T.Bell at this point.

I agree completely. Our draft was yesterday and I chose to stay away from the Denver RB's. I just don't buy the fact that Mike Anderson will be the starter the whole year. I doubt that he will be able to stay healthy but, even if he does, I see him hitting the wall at some point and Bell taking over. Where was Anderson on the depth chart last year? He wasn't challenging for #1 and looked like crap when he did get in there. Now all of the sudden after turning 32 and coming off of a season ending injury I'm supposed to believe he's the savior? Sorry, I ain't buyin' it. Good luck to everyone drafting today that picks him in the second or third round. :bye:

I'm a Bell supporter and those statements don't make sense.

You'd have to be a seriously deluded Broncos fan to want Ron Dayne anywhere near your starting lineup. I don't care how good your system is. Dayne's a dog.

Anderson had a season-ending groin injury last year, but he was #1 on the depth chart when he got hurt. So your history is foggy, apparently.

No, Anderson was not #1 on the depth chart when he got hurt last preseason. He was #2 behind Griffin.I don't understand why you continue to perpetuate this myth. I've provided clear documentation of where Anderson stood last year when he got hurt. He was challenging Griffin, but Griffin was the week 1 starter.

I may be a bit foggy but I know he wasn't winning that job last year. Go ahead and draft him early if you want. I would try to trade by week 2 or 3 if he still has the job though.

He got hurt early, so I don't think the week 1 starter was named yet. I'm just going on memory, but I think Anderson was leading the competition when he got hurt. Griffin was of course named the week 1 starter, but that was after Anderson went down.

I'm starting to wonder if Bell should be considered the 5th best RB from last year's class. Behind SJax, JJ, KJ and Perry now.

Why, if you have a system that damn near makes anyone look good and has been proven over and over again, would you want an old back with and injury and drug history in your starting lineup? 32 is the age when most backs hit the wall so even if he makes an exception this year why would you not want to see if someone younger is your future. Not like Mike Anderson is Priest Holmes here either.

Who's saying he is? But Dayne is a dog. I'm sorry, but he's a dog. The Broncos have a great system but every system can be exposed and if you want to see Denver's get exposed go right ahead and plug Dayne into the starting lineup.

On the other hand, if Anderson is the clear #1 RB in week (and right now he is, and that won't change next week because the starters won't play anything more than 2 series at most and likley not at all), he'll be hard to dislodge. Griffin went into last season as the #1 RB, and even though he was spectacualr against KC in week 1, he was awful in the next 3+ games until he got hurt - gaining 155 yds in 62 carries (a whopping 2.5 ypc) with no TDs and a few fumbles, including one on the second to last play of the game against JAX that cost DEN the game - and he was holding the #1 spot until he got hurt.Bell had the job to take in the preseason, and did nothing to make it his. He was badly outperformed by Anderson (whom the vet players love) and was also outperformed by Dayne (who ran with very serious authority, unlike his NYG fiasco). Bell's blitz blocking detriorated significantly from last year & he almost got Van Pelt killed on an ole' block this preseason.

Anderson isn't going to lose the job unless he gets hurt or he performs extremely poorly. Good luck waiting for Bell to take it during the regular season through Bell's own actions.

Not sure why anyone would spend a high pick on Bell. Its amazing to see a wasted pick that early on a guy that could not grab hold of the starting job for years now. The way I think about it is whereever you draft Bell there is a 65-70% chance that he is going to bust. Hence I think he qualifies himself as a sleeper but never a third rounder. Maybe round Six! IMO

It's not like he slept his way to the top. He WON the job. Shanny is going with the guy that WON the job and is best for his team right now. He's not worried about two seasons from now. He's running an NFL team not a dynasty fantasy team.

The only place that this is hard to understand is right here on this message board. The place that create legends out of Quentin Griffin, William Green, Reshard Lee, Tatum Bell etc etc etc...

Accept what is and what will be. Mike Anderson would have been in position to be the starter last year...IS the starter this year and will remain so until Shanny decides to start the next guy that nobody is talking about on these boards. Get used to it.

In fact he'll probably start Bell after he drafts some young stud in the second round next year that everyone on here will fall in love with...then we'll all be scratching our heads when he goes with Tatum Bell instead of [insert young stud name here] because "who could possibly be better than the unknown guy who tore it up college? certainly not some experienced backup in the NFL"

For all the Anderson and Bell bandwagoners. You deserve what you get. 4700 posts this year about Shannahan not being truthful on the injury report, RBBC, and not knowing who is going to bust every week.

Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me.
