i guess the take home is the targets. he got a lot of them. but, the Cowboys are more likely WR by commitee. i wouldnt put too much stock into this performance. if he has another game with this many targets...............This was against the Chiefs. You can bet your ### the Eagles and Giants make those tackles.
THIS.great game by Austin but some pretty horrendous tackling by the Chiefs
Your post summarizes Austin very well. He makes some plays and every once and a while really shows some skill that makes you think he's arrived. However, as you noted he does drop balls and will also occasionally run a sloppy route. He is still a work in progress and would be very frustarting to own in FF. He is the deep threat in the Cowboys offense-which should get him further opportunities.I watched most of the game and it seemed to me that there was a ton of dropped balls by the Dallas WR. I know Hurd, Crayton and Miles each dropped a TD pass and it seemed like Miles dropped a ton more balls but Romo keep force feeding him passes. He had a great game but this would be something I would love for the Dallas homers to weigh in on.
Is Austin the new number 1 after this game? No but I would expect him to start across from Roy Williams and he could easily get more targets if Roy is the one with the double coverage. Now the danger is that Dallas won't make the right decision on this since there is no way that a hurt Barbarian should have had the majority of carries during this game over Choice.Your post summarizes Austin very well. Between Austin, Witten, Hurd, Williams and Crayton they have a ton of athletic wr's that seem to get open pretty regularly and with the running game going down in flames I would have to think Romo would be someone that is going to explode after his bye.Reacher said:Is Austin the new number 1 after this game? Over-exaggerations...?According to Rotoworld's "Beyond the Box Score" article for this week, Miles Austin was targeted 13 times and caught 10 of those passes. He kept dropping balls that were catchable and if the Cheaps' DEF could finish their tackles, he would have been paste by the end of the game.
Usually a sub-package wideout, Miles Austin moved into an every-down role as the Cowboys' split end with Roy Williams (rib) inactive. Austin dropped a possible touchdown early, but more than atoned by catching lead-grabbing and game-winning scores in the fourth quarter and overtime. He was simply too fast for the Chiefs' slow-footed defensive backs. Tony Romo showed supreme confidence in the toolsy deep threat, targeting Austin 13 times to eight for Patrick Crayton and five for Jason Witten.
This sounds right. He might have earned more snaps with his game yesterday. But until the staff decides to bench either Crayton or Williams, he isnt getting starter reps. I personally would like to see him opposite Roy, but the staff likes Crayton too much for that.Kind of the same thing with Barber and Felix. Felix is so freaking explosive. Yes, he's an injury risk. But why the staff only uses him a few touches a game is beyond me.He'll fall into the same waiver wire receiver of the week trap as the rest. Manningham. Garcon. Mossawhatever. Now Austin. Sound familiar? Feast or famine - only guarantee is they will starve in your lineup and feast on your bench. But we'll have an 8 way bidding war in our league for him this week. I won't be one of 'em.

Manningham has been good. So has Garcon. MM could still be good after a bad week in a wind game. Austin is a dynamic talent and the HC just said he's going to play the same amount of snaps that a starter plays. He's in a very good offense with a QB that isn't afraid to chuck it and defenses can't focus in on him. He just put up 10 for 250 and 2. I'd say he's worth a bidding war if he is available but maybe you are waiting for something better like.....????Manningham has dropped more balls than he has caught since his breakout game. If you started Garcon on Sunday night, well, you didn't get much. Wayne, Clark, Collie, Addai - then Garcon - in that order. So if you like 5th in progression guys, go for it. Not saying Manning (and other QB's) won't exploit coverages/matchups, just sayin' it's unreasonable to expect these guys to be consistent - at all. He'll fall into the same waiver wire receiver of the week trap as the rest. That seems way off. He definitely dropped a td pass (maybe 2), I remember bobbling a pass near the sidelines and I am sure there were others. I understand he caught 10 balls but I am telling you I watched the majority of the game and it seemed like he should have caught more. Can't remember if it was yesterday or Monday, but during his press conference, Wade Phillips said that Austin was in on something like 55 offensive plays on Sunday. He refused to go so far as to say that Austin had taken Crayton's job from him, but he did say that he would be getting "at least as many snaps as he did in Kansas City" in future games, and that his performance had earned him it. Phillips also said he would be making sure to get him on the field, whether it is as a flanker, slot reciever...I'm in the camp of won't believe it until I see it, but at least the coach is saying he's going to get starter's reps. This sounds right. He might have earned more snaps with his game yesterday. What if you started Manningham last week? Or Garcon the weeks prior? That's really not what I was getting at anyway. What I am saying is, what are you waiting for that is still available on the waiver wire? In my FFPC league I see maybe 3 breakout candidates left on the waiver wire that only get a chance if the starter in front of them gets seriously injured. The odds of that happening for any of them are not very good and even if it does, there is no guarantee that they will, in fact, "breakout". I will take a WR with superior size and speed that is going to get 50-55 reps. Romo obviously trusts him. Is he going to catch every pass that comes his way? No but any one that he does catch can go for a TD.I hope you're right. This team needs some explosive players. Austin is. Felix is. For that matter, so is Bennett. But each has some other issues. Austin drops balls more frequently than either Crayton or Roy. Also his route running isnt as consistent as the other 2. Felix, we know about his health problems. He also really lacks in pass blocking. I havent figured out why Bennett isnt getting the ball more. Maybe still not reading the same things as Romo, so not getting trusted to be where he's expected.LarryAllen said:Can't remember if it was yesterday or Monday, but during his press conference, Wade Phillips said that Austin was in on something like 55 offensive plays on Sunday. I know what Wade said. And I also know who controls the offense. And it isnt Wade. I really fail to see how signing Rossum to be the punt returner has anything to do with Crayton and Austin at wideout. Totally un-related moves. You don't have to hope Ridgelake. I posted the quote on post #21.
Wade Phillips says that Austin will play the same amount week 7 that he did this past week against the Chiefs.
"He's going to play. I mean, he played 58 plays in this game and I'm saying he's going to play 50-something plays in the next game too," Phillips said. "We're going to get him on the field. A guy has a game like that and shows that he can do the things we thought he could do."
So Wade, are you saying Austin is now a starter?
"Well, we're going to play him as much as he played the last game," Phillips said. "I'll say that."
Another big clue that Austin will be at least the #2 WR.
Dallas signed veteran return specialist Allan Rossum today.
Miles Austin is Dallas's normal kick off returner but they didn't use him in that role against KC because he was starting and they didn't want to wear him out or risk him being injured. The replacements that we had in that role against KC didn't play very well.
Rossum is also expected to replace Crayton as the punt return specialist.
They can't possibly be that stupid. I hope you're wrong. They may not demote Crayton from starter status after one game, but I expect Austin to see more snaps and way more targets. I think Romo would demand Miles be on the field. No one else gets open consistently.I'm not trying to be negative or contrarian here. I want Austin to play more. He adds a diminsion this team really needs. But him getting starter reps when both Crayton and Roy are healthy is something that I kind of have to see to believe.
Except hes not a rookiePlays for a better team/qbhas more yards/catchesbut yeah I see how similar they are.Good posting there Roy Williams ownerMiles Austin is the new Massoquoi
You're right. The guy who really controls that offense is the guy who writes everyone's checks, is the first open mouth about player and personnel moves and who has compared Austin to T.O. in terms of physical and athletic ability. You think Jones is going to sit back quietly and allow Austin to languish on the bench now? I'm no homer but I see Jones as just a half step below Al Davis when it comes to interfering with his HC and OC.I know what Wade said. And I also know who controls the offense. And it isnt Wade. You don't have to hope Ridgelake. I posted the quote on post #21.

Austin has shown flashes of his ability before this past Sunday. He had a decent end to the 2008 season with 2 or 3 TDs, and had a 40+ yard TD earlier this season. He is young, and has all of the tangibles that you look for in a stud WR - speed, size, strength. Maybe he needs to work on his hands - but so do a lot of stud WRs. Maybe he has to work on his route running (?), but that is something he can learn to do better. The fact is, the first time he got into the starting lineup, be blew up the Cowboys all time receiving record, and had the best receiving performance by a WR that I can remember since Flipper Anderson in 1989, including a dramatic 60 yard OT TD to win the game.Massaquoi has had one good game, and then a game where his team completed 2 total passes. He still might wind up being fantasy-relevant. This is just a strange comparison.Miles Austin is the new Massoquoi
Except hes not a rookiePlays for a better team/qbhas more yards/catchesbut yeah I see how similar they are.Good posting there Roy Williams ownerMiles Austin is the new Massoquoi
Austin to Massaquoi is sorta like comparing Beanie Wells to Mendenhall for me. Beanie may not get a real shot at the starting gig this year. He might, but he also may not. And that would be OK as long as it served the team's best interests. Mendenhall made lots of mistakes and also got hurt in year one. But in year two, there's no excuse for the team or Mendy to NOT find out if it is going to work out or not. For a rookie (especially WR), there are plenty of legitimate excuses for inconsistency, mistakes, etc. This is Austin's chance to show what he is/is not. He knows it. No excuses apply to him, unlike Massaquoi. This is Dallas' chance to find out what they have in him. I think they both give this a full effort to work. Dallas has nothing to lose - they need to ride the hot hand so to speak. They need the spark. Not a Williams owner and don't own anyone on the Dallas offense. The comparison has to do with him being a flash in the pan and waiver wire darling. Teams will get film, rotate coverage and Miles Austin will disappear ala Massoquoi. It was one great game vs. probably the worst team in the NFL.Except hes not a rookiePlays for a better team/qbhas more yards/catchesbut yeah I see how similar they are.Good posting there Roy Williams ownerMiles Austin is the new Massoquoi

the DEF shut Massa down huh? they rotated coverage and locked him down...that's what happened? He still accounted for 70% of CLE recieving ydg and caught 50% of his QB's completed passes....I think that game had a little more to do with a QB that completed 2 passes for 23yds in the whole game. I don't own the guy, but I think you're jumping to conclusions on this one.I'm not a firm believer that any WR1 just jumps off the waiver wire....but either may be servicable going forward. They'll slide Crayton into the slot and Austin will see more PT, but lets not crown him yet. Out of the three WW darlings, Austin, Maclin, and Massa...I think Maclin has the potential to produce the most on a regular basis.I dunno - Miles Austin was a WW darling for dynasty teams last year, and was definitely seen as potential breakout breakout material this season. He was available in very few dynasty leagues over the offseason - I know I rostered him over the offseason in any league I had him in. Jerry Jones essentially said they let TO go because of the potential of Miles Austin. Not that anyone really expected/counted on this type of game, but it's not like he came out of nowhere, either. Not a Williams owner and don't own anyone on the Dallas offense. after Massa's breakout game 2 weeks ago, yes they did shut him down. what did he have last week 15 yards on 1 catch? That's my point. After Manningham's breakout game 3 weeks ago how has he done? Hey Austin might be decent but lets see him do something when teams are looking at him and trying to stop him, against a real NFL defense that can make a tackle and some decent NFL corners. Not a Williams owner and don't own anyone on the Dallas offense. You MISSED his point. His point was that the QB in Cleveland only threw for 23 yards. The winds were so bad in Bufallo that they didn't HAVE to shut down Massaquoi - Massaquoi caught the only pass thrown for more than 5 yards. If Buff had shut him down, you'd expect to see the passing #s go to someone else. This was a fluke game where NO passing worked for DA. Just a bad example.after Massa's breakout game 2 weeks ago, yes they did shut him down. what did he have last week 15 yards on 1 catch? That's my point. Out of the three WW darlings, Austin, Maclin, and Massa...I think Maclin has the potential to produce the most on a regular basis.
