Minnesota Sports Fans - Who Has It Worse Than Them? (1 Viewer)

Gophers make a bowl game with a losing record because they're good students. Yay?

Wild fired their coach and are off to a miserable start

The bloom is off the Vikings' rose.

I guess the T-Wolves are good? I don't follow basketball.

I searched the thread and didn't see it mentioned so apologies if it's already been covered. The Secret Base/Dorktown documentary about the Vikings is excellent and held my interest for the full nine  hours. Jon Bois uncovered a ton of great stories about former Minnesota greats (and not so greats).

Alright, let's get this out of the way first - Minnesota will always have the World Series crowns from 1987 and 1991. And that's that. They had some spasms of success in the aughts but really squandered the best years of Johan Santana and Francisco Liriano.

Vikings - 0-4 in Super Bowls and despite having one of the best NFL teams I've ever seen in 1998 lost in the NFC Championship when their kicker (Gary Anderson) missed his first and only kick of the season that would have put them in the Super Bowl. I guarantee they would have fared better than the Falcons did. Beyond that, it's the epitome of mediocrity. Early playoff exits, milquetoast QBs and an inability to ride one of the best RBs in the history of the NFL to the mountaintop.

Timberwolves - Fans celebrated their play-in game victory last year like they won the championship. Never could capitalize on Kevin Garnett. An expansion team that still feels like one 30 years later from the outside looking in.

NHL - Lost the North Stars to Dallas (who won the franchises first and only Stanley Cup) then got an expansion team in 2000 that hasn't exactly lit the ice on fire.

I cannot think of another fan base that's had more disappointment than Minnesota. If you disagree, state your case.

Minnesota, your long national nightmare is OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

***2023 UPDATE***
  • Purdue Men's Basketball - First round loss as a #1 seed
  • Purdue Football - 1-3 - lost all three games at home

I dunno man, I'm:

Vikings
Mets
Maple Leafs
Timberwolves (hey, this season was fun at least)

Dang, some of you need to pick some better teams! ;)

I stay in-state for college stuff since i went to the UW. Badgers at least have had sone good runs when i followed a lot.

Pro my teams were picked young because of a player or other dumb reason, but I haven’t changed. My teams are:

Patriots (since the 80s, but grew more in college when Bledsoe was drafted)

Penguins- loved Mario and the uniforms. Lol

Mariners - Griffey Jr.

Yeah I need to go back and tackle toddler* to adolescent Woz for his choices.

*Chose the Mets when I was 3 because they were all over the news (86 series) and I liked their colors.
Ive changed my stance a little on teams. In principle i am in the camp of picking a team and sticking with them. Obviously i dont care too much that it should be a local team.

However, in my old age i realize how truly awful some franchises and owners are, and understand people jumping ship.

Zero problem with this. As long you don't later decide to crawl back on the bandwagon when a team starts to do better.

Never would now, but I mostly just watch baseball anyway.

Mlb is a different beast because of a handful of teams buying all the players. Much harder for a team like the Marniers to get rings, but at least they seem to give a crap and try. I cant say that for all the teams though.

Right. I'm never going to switch because I'd be so bummed if one of my teams won after my switch.

I figure I'm at most halfway through my time on this Earth and I don't see sports going away so I have at least 160 more tries (4 favorite teams x 40 more years/seasons) for one of my teams to finally win a championship that I can experience. That's gotta be good odds, right? Right???

No, sorry. ;)

Is there an animal sacrifice ritual or something else pagan that we can try?
What we need to do is go raid Lameblow field, find that missing championship trophy they stole from us and bring it back where it belongs. Hopefully that will cure the curse for the Vikings and the Twins.

There are circumstances where I could see someone going back. I know a lot of people who decided they could not root for the WFT/Commanders anymore until Snyder was gone. I’m someone who would not say left them (as never was enough of a fan in the first place), but, between the name and Snyder, they were the last of the major DC sports teams that I adopted after I moved to DC from NJ. When he sold the team, it was like a fog was lifted and energy associated with the football team is just different.

Yeah, so, when you even toss in the Lynx and consider I lost in 8 of 10 fantasy leagues and had the Rams -5.5 (wtf is Pierce doing???) yesterday was pretty rough. I had zero alcohol and yet feel hungover from all the losing.

Right. I'm never going to switch because I'd be so bummed if one of my teams won after my switch.
Plus the reward is that much sweeter after all the pain and suffering. I am an LA Kings fan and the elation, relief, satisfaction, and jubilation when the Kings finally won in 2012 was indescribable. It took 45 years for them to finally win a Cup. Just incredible. I can only imagine that if the Vikings ever get there it will be even more satisfying because of the long suffering. The Kings haven't had nearly the nugget punches over the years that the Vikings have had so I have to imagine the relief/jubilation will be that much more.

One can only dream!

So where does this lynx loss rate?
If you aren’t taking into account the lesser interest in the Lynx by many, it would be near the top. Imagine the Wolves having a phantom foul called on them with 5 seconds left in game 7. I think for many of the MN posters here though, it ranks below a million other core 4 sport failures over the years….

For sure as to the bold. That's why I figured I'd ask. Wholeheartedly agree if that was the Timberwolves I'd be pretty annoyed even the next day.

Even with the Mets on, I was watching (Little Woz has been mildly invested and my aunt and grandma are huge fans so we text about it). I thought I have a pretty good understanding of basketball but that foul with the comment of "not a legal guarding position" had me flummoxed.

And, yes, the Liberty were the better team so, likewise with the Mets, it was fun just to see them there and it probably hurts less if the expectations had been higher, but regardless it still hurts.

That Lions win was pretty sweet
They're a good team. Of the losses yesterday, this one probably hurt the least because the Vikings played fine and confirmed they're not smoke and mirrors like two years ago. Big kick by your replacement kicker. Would have been nice to see the Vikings win off of the other team's missed kick for once but he drilled it. And, of course, it would have been a great result for me as I had the Lions +2.5 and a Vikings win by 1 was the ideal option, but just add that to my pile of "losses" yesterday.

Lions and Vikings are probably the two best teams in the NFC with, as crazy as this sounds, the third best team being Green Bay. We're in for some good football viewing this year collectively as a division.

I came in here wondering why people were mad about a Vikings team that is performing a lot better than I expected them to.

I ended up having to google who the Lynx are and what sport they play.

@SWC covered it beautifully.

I know it's women's basketball, and for some reason the WNBA schedule makers scheduled the game right against other major sporting events, but the Lynx got screwed badly by the refs on the level of that Packers/Seahawks screw job years ago except this was the final game of the finals with five seconds left. It's 30 for 30 level stuff.

ETA: To your point, nobody is really lamenting the Vikings loss. We're still pretty happy there even if a win would have been nice.

Yeah I was rooting hard for the Liberty, due to the Oregon connection with Sabrina and Sabally, but that was bad. Stewie takes like 5 steps, falls into a defender, and gets the call. I'm not one of those "you can't call that in that situation," people, but that was just a bad call that they even reviewed and still upheld. Add in the overall FT disparity, and It was hard to watch that game and not think the league just wasn't going to let the Liberty lose.

It did save Sabrina (1-19!) from going down with John Starks in NY lore as shooting the team out of the championship in the deciding game. That was just a brutal performance. Fun to see Sabally play such a huge role though after having watched her in person for two years at Oregon, especially since she had to come back from tearing her ACL twice while here.

Just my yearly drive by to remind you losers that you all are playing for second place behind pretty much any Cleveland team of your choice. Stellar weekend for Cleveland sports!

Um, your Deshaun Watson problem arguably just got solved...

That's a win for Cleveland.

This thread is beautiful and wretched in equal parts. Drew me back in after not posting for a couple years. Thanks, GM!

I have made this prediction for years, specific to the Vikings: if they ever do win it all, nobody will expect it. They have shown that they will never be able to pull it off as favorites. They will sneak into the playoffs and either go on a crazy run, or at least beat one or two opponents that are heavily favored. We will not see it coming until the confetti is falling.

This season has some potential, but absolutely no Viking fans will allow themselves to get excited.

Whichever team breaks the streak first will be honored as gods among us. If it's the Vikings or Wild especially, there will be absolute mayhem.

Yes, whew, only ANOTHER REBUILD on the horizon for the Browns. We do those better than any team in the NFL...oh wait, no we don't.

Didn't Santa LeBron bring Cleveland a title not all that long ago?
Look, you all can keep throwing that up as Cleveland's lasting success but one championship in 60 years doesn't define a ****ing winning streak for me. Yea it was great, nobody will forget "CLEVELAND, THIS IS FOR YOU!" then he left...again. The Browns haven't been competitive in three decades and while the Tribe/Guardians have made it to a handful of World Series, they have always found some spectacular way to lose.

I stand by my statement, y'all are playing for 2nd place and it's not close.

I am now almost 50. Not a single MN team I cheer for has even made a finals (WS, SB, etc) appearance in my adult life. You've seen your MLB and NBA teams play in multiple WS and Finals, and win one. Ohio State football is a yearly contender with a NC pretty recently.

Nobody is talking about a streak. JUST ONE GD CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCE, FFS!

"Win" is maybe taking it a little too far. They did spend $230M guaranteed to acquire a guy who is universally hated, only for him to also suck at playing football. And Baker Mayfield is playing pretty well.

I get why Browns fans are a little unhappy at the moment.

It's a win to not have to watch Watson every week.

Not that I want anymore of your ire this morning good sir but you guys DO have Ohio State doing things for the state of Ohio. What does Minnesota have in the way of college sports?
