The BBC has seen a text message sent to families by the airline saying it had to be assumed "beyond reasonable doubt" that the plane was lost and there were no survivors.

Cockpit voice recorder only records for two hours. The flight data recorder will have more than 2 hours worth of data. Even so, that will probably just show that the plane ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean.

The Malay PM coming on at this moment is really rich, why yes just at the moment that the different satellites have found large, very possible plane debris, with maximum recovery efforts on the way, now suddenly out marches the big guy to say "Uhm yeah, update, it turns out we've looked at AAIB (?) and they've used technology in a wholly new way and we've concluded that the plane did crash in the South Indian Ocean." Great timing there, they're about to wrap this thing up as to where it went and he's just getting out front of it. These guys have been some real jokers.

A few reasons why I think mechanical failure of some kind is still the third most likely scenario after either suicide or hijack:

• The fact that the plane turned around just after leaving Malay airspace or just as it was about to - It seems incredibly remote that mechanical failure would happen just at the moment that the plane was doing its handoff out of Malay airspace and into Vietnamese. Contrarily this would be the perfect time if pilot suicide or hijack was to take place. The Malay authorities would be expecting the plane to leave their airspace at that just that moment. This would also explain a very normal "good night" signoff from the co-pilot; which if the course had not been reprogrammed was probably perfectly normal and before takeover, or if it was reprogrammed (as originally reported) then it was just as likely coerced to sound normal.
• The lack of communications - if there was mechanical failure, how could the plane be redirected and yet there be communications failure such that contacting any nearby tower was completely impossible? Human intervention of some kind must have taken place here.
• The flight was at night, after 1:00 am Malay time, I believe - the passengers may have been sleeping, they may not have even noticed the turns in the plane if they were not wild or jerky or sudden. It may have taken some time for passengers to react to what was going on.

A couple followup questions:

- Where have the Vietnames been in all this? I would think that air traffic control in any jurisdiction would have a flight plan of any plane coming into their jurisdiction. If so, what did this Vietnamese air traffic control do at the juncture it became apparent that 370 wasn't showing up? I would think the standard procedure is to send a call out to the other jurisdiction to figure out where they were and to notify they had not arrived. Did this happen? If not it's hard to blame the Malaysians for not realizing that a plane had gone of its grid.

- What was the final conclusion on the two passengers with illegal passports? It's totally believable that two guys could get this for drug running, or maybe because they had travel restrictions for political or criminal reasons. Has this ever been run down?

Hey I watched the presser.

Seems to me everyone has really known it's been in the South Indian Ocean for a while.

It was determined that the two were looking to illegally emigrate to Europe, which is fairly common in that area.

Also that was a small plane, nothing the size of a 777. I was just asking, been waiting for someone to bring it up, no one had to my knowledge.

I think one reason it was excluded was the weird behavior of the plane, going off radar, west then south so quickly as opposed to in a long arc.

However as the facts keep changing it might be good to revisit old conclusions that were previously ruled out based on old facts.

Actually crashed in South Dakota. So, turning from a East/West course North, is not too far fetched. The Malaysian plane could have turned South from and East/West course

In order for it to be an hypoxia issue the oxygen masks would have had to malfunction. ......somebody flew it down to 12,000 no hypoxia at that altitude....So either everything malfunctioned at 35,000 feet everybody died of hypoxia and the plane decided to fly itself to 12,000 then out to sea....or the pilots or somebody with pilot experience flew it down to 12,000 and out to sea......if it is in fact where they are actually looking.
