MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (1 Viewer)

@Raging weasel

a tale of two halves. for me, I've heard those first songs enough that I don't feel a need to hear much more, although I really liked the SRV and Etta back-to-back.

when it hit PJ Harvey, I started to find my own groove with it- and I don't remember that song, cool to hear.

low spark- cripes... I went through a period where I put that on every mix tape I made, so it should've been played out for me. but it's been so long since I've listened that I was really happy to hear it- listened to it 3 times in a row. soooo good.

and then... *bam-:headbang:* . I'm not a really metal dude, even though I like tangential noisey guitary punk/garage/post-punk. but dammit- this all just worked really well. great flow, and great tunes I'd never really listened to or ever heard of. really turned my crank this morning. really, really dug that Black Angels tune- pulling into my catch-all playlist fo-sho.
Glad you enjoyed it. Listen to Passover by the Black Angels- it's not even the best track from that disc imo.

@JZilla

winner for most eclectic, and he somehow pulled it all together into a bizarre but cohesive flow/mix. not really sure where it's supposed to end, though (40 songs)- so I'll just do the first visual half (too lazy to count) ending with BJM.

loved how this thing flowed. even though I didnt' really get that into individual songs too much, it was all fun to listen to.

interesting to see a few people take early girl-groups... and I'm happy to see it. really been enjoying listening to these- and I really liked the two you linked up. other than the obvious classics, I have no background in this genre so it's been fun learning some new stuff from you guys.

also interesting to see kenny rogers get picked by a few people- another dude I know nothing about outside of the obvious. cool stuff.

wish I had thought of that super furry animals tune, and you sniped me with the beastie boys.

I think the Brian Jonestown song was the cutoff.

going into snomm's now...

before I do- I had the weirdest dream that this woman and a friend of mine (another mom friend) were being very flirty with me, with lots of nathan jessup style hugs and lingering/wandering hands. I think I fooled around with the other one, who was KT Tunstall... but I have no idea what the real KT looks like. I think she actually looked like the chick from the ####kid song/video I was about to include in my draft- kinda hipster/brooklyn style yoga/indie-chick girl. but of course I don't remember actually fooling around with her, only feeling guilty and worried that I might have (in the dream)

Did you make it to the end?  How did you feel about the Dedicated tonthe One I Love ending out of curiosity.  It works on my system with nice sound quality, but I was curious if anyone else dug it.
I did. I liked it (familiar with the song), but I was listening out of just the speakers of my Iphone.

@Bonzai - Had some issues with your draft, one or two didn't get put up properly. Is this correct? Let me know. Thanks!

When you said this, I was like "I don't remember that part of the movie...oh waiiiiiiittttt"

@El Floppo

floppo's half dozen of one, 6 others

A nearly perfect mix. If mine is a "fever dream," this is perfectly logical, dreamy, heavy, punky, indie, and just wonderful. There isn't a bad track on it.

A+

I hate to compare -- and won't do that again -- but that grade should say what I think of it. I'd really encourage anybody with a rockist bent to listen to it. I wouldn't skip this.

Top 5 of those I've never heard:

5) I Got A Thing, You Got A Thing, We All Got A Thing - Funkadelic

4) Second Last Line Of The Nation - So Cow

3) I Lived My Life To Stand In The Shadows Of Your Heart - A Place To Bury Strangers

2) The Past Is A Grotesque Animal - Of Montreal

1) Pass The Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind - Yo La Tengo

Thanks, flop. That was sublime.
thanks, gb- genuinely glad you liked it.

these drafts, I tell myself I'm going to branch out and be more eephus-like with a theme or something that goes outside of my wheelhouse, but then I just end up taking a bunch of #### I like anyways- always squarely in my wheelhouse.

No sweat, man. I just enjoyed the heck out of it. Ilov80s and I are very similar when it comes to rock n' roll, and I didn't think I would like Of Montreal either, but that and the Yo La Tengo back to back was really cool.

I listened to A Place To Bury Strangers's Exploding Head and So Cow last night. Really enjoyed A Place To Bury Strangers.

@El Floppo

Top 3 songs that I wasn't too familiar with

The Wedding Present- It's What You Want That Matters the Most

Of Montreal- The Past is a Grotesque Animal

Japanther- Um Like Your Smile is Totally Ruling Me

Thoughts

Came full throttle out of the gate. Loved it. Got a little off track when it hit the Rotary, Poulenc, Death Grips section but recovered well.  I also think I discovered more awesome new songs from this list than other. Thanks man. Some real cool music here. Picking the best new 3 songs was about impossible. I never realized I might like Of Montreal. LCD Soundsystem is better than Radiohead. The Pavement, Funkadelic, Gil Scott back to back to back jacks deserve congrats.

Best 1-2 punch

22 consecutive minutes of YLT and OM. Sick.
thanks, gb.

really glad you caught on to the back-to-back 10+ minute tunes... and that they didn't overwhelm.

of montreal is really hit or miss for me- most times I just wanna punch that dude in the face. but I loooove this tune.

at a certain point I started to fade a bit listening to the post-punky stuff, and really wanted to put that Poulenc in there. had nowhere to go with it, so figured I might as well follow it up with that death grips. rotary probably would've gone better with the more soul/funky bridge. the nuyorican soul cover I'm used to hearing might have fit better in there- more modern production

I think I had them very high in my FFA year end album rankings whatever year it came out. was probably the only person ranking them, so likely didn't make the top 50 cut.

Listened to @Binky The Doormat 's playlist during this morning’s commute. While I was familiar with most of the artists on this playlist, most of these songs were a first listens for me.

Opening with a 10 minute Elton song was surprisingly effective. I thoroughly enjoyed each minute of the journey and found myself wanting more once the song ended. This song delivered.

I'll admit, did a fist-pump when Can’t Hear Your Daddy’s Heartbeat came on because the drum beat is soooo sick. It hits you right from the get go and keeps up the pace throughout the entire song. This is a new song for me and a really awesome and enjoyable listen.

Neil Young – I forgot about this song but glad it founds it way back into my library. Thanks!

Overall, there wasn’t a single song that felt out of place. Definitely going to come back to this playlist for a few more listens.

Thanks for review and listen Waingro!  Lots of goodness with the early Steve Miller stuff - glad you liked it!

Listened to @Binky The Doormat's after lunch. It only had 5 songs that I wasn't familiar with and enjoyed those as well as the rest of the mix. This is more my kinda stuff and I would have drafted almost all these tracks.

was nice to hear some tubes-probably been 15 years since Ive heard anything by them other than "shes a beauty" or "talk to ya later".

never heard of sugalland but they fit perfectly into this mix.

never heard of melanie either and while the song was good it was about 2 mins too long.

really liked this one-great job!!

Only 4 reviews to go but may have to wait until monday-we shall see.

Thanks for the review weasel!  Really glad you liked it.  Not sure which one was sugarland - was it the 13th Floor elevators "Don't want to ever come down"?

Still waiting for someone to name a good band/musician from CT
Mary Travers.  An all-time great imo. Just looked it up - born somewhere else.  But she spent most of her adult life in CT and was very much s part of the community.  Beautiful person.

I admit many wealthy musicians move to CT later in life. However PP&M weren't making music shaped by CT.

Yup.  Michael Bolton and that's about it.  I did play a mean trumpet in high school though.
I wonder why there are some cities that seem to have such rich musical traditions and some that have almost none. NY, Detroit, NO. We could go on forever with the greats that passed through there. Other major cities, much less.

Was wondering the same thing.  Just no recent music tradition in CT.  My Grandfather used to tell me stories that in the 20's and 30's a lot of jazz musicians came through Hartford to jam with local talent.  But no music scene here at all these days.  Not much of any scene actually.   :lol:

Even larger cities like Baltimore or Cleveland seem to fall really short

Only got through a couple today.  @Hov34 was the first.

A lot of familiar stuff again, and a few that I had considered during the draft so I am glad to see them get drafted.  Really loved Fogerty bookend to the mix.  Ballsy move starting off the mix with the 11min song too.  In another music reminding me of movie moments during these mixes, I might have to put in some Full Metal Jacket tonight now after getting that Sinatra song in my head.  Glad that some Prince got drafted, and I completely didn't think of that Guess Who song - love it!  Joe Jackson popping up in another mix, but this was one of the two songs I knew of his.  In what might be the :bag: moment of the draft for me, I don't think I have ever heard the Al Green version of that song, just that damn UB40 version.

1.  Stevie Wonder -

For whatever reason, it's somebody who didn't click much before, but it seems like in my old age I like damn near every song that I come across (mostly through these drafts).  Another one to add to my list of artists I need to listen to more.

2.  Genesis -

I think it was covered in another draft, but this is the same as the comment above.  Of the earlier Genesis I have heard I have really liked it.  I have listened to a couple older albums, but not this one.

3.  Earth, Wind & Fire -

Damn good tune.  Listened to this one a couple times.

Overall a great mix and great flow to it.  Couple of the countryish songs didn't sit with me, but I got through them.  I actually like the Dead South more than Waylon.  Sadly, when I glanced at the pic for the mix, I thought the pic of the Waylon album was Dave Grohl.

@Raging weasel

Finished up this playlist today. As others have mentioned it starts off with lighter rock and gradually progresses to more of a heavy sound. I was familiar with about 75% of the artists and I wouldn't say there were many surprises from those that I already knew the sound. I wasn't familiar with/really liked the Etta James - It's a Man's Man's Man's World, PJ Harvey's The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore, and (my favorite new song in the mix) Black Angels - The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven. If I had known about that song beforehand I would've definitely paired it with my "Can I Take My Gun Up to Heaven" choice. Solid list all the way through.

@Bonzai - Had some issues with your draft, one or two didn't get put up properly. Is this correct? Let me know. Thanks!

Pints of Guinness Make You Strong
Looks good to me. :shrug:

I think of those delicious, thin crust pizzas - especially the kind with hot peppers ,,,and of course, the ones with the clams and white sauce.

So good.
I lived a block from Pepe's and Sally's for two years. So. Freaking. Good.

Kissed the Stanley Cup there. (I was such a regular they invited me to a viewing party).

I think the guy from Dirty Projectors went to Yale.

That's as New Haven as I've got.
My non drinking ever M.I.L. was waiting for a liver transplant near Yale for 4-6 months back in 2009. It was just two years after my F.I.L. passed from cancer. We drove there (2hrsish) 4-5 days a week to visit her in the nursing home.  Every drive had our new born daughter screaming her guts out non stop.  Every time, both ways. Come to find out she had bad reflux but that's a whole other thing.

Anyway my M.I.L. got to the number one meld score, and she finally went to Yale for the transplant.  She died on the table shortly after they told us she would be as good as new.  Ironically I was just looking at old pictures of my inlaws and my son for the first time in years.

When I think of Connecticut, unfortunately that's the first thing I think of.  John Mayer is second.

Damn sorry. That's tough.

Not sure which is more depressing tbh.

The school/classes idea was mine, and I can foire that up soon if people want that one.  Down with whatever though.  Usually we take a few weeks ao people can listen to mixes.

Damn mobile fbg
Liked that school idea a lot.

 I'll do another mix tonight.
