MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (1 Viewer)

As par it seems for this draft, you come into the thread planning to draft one song and decide to draft another...

18.xx - John Prine - That's The Way That The World Goes 'Round

Never got into John's music until very recently.  What I have noticed is that his songs take you strange places at times, but as would be expected from a master song craftsman, I find myself circling back to the song again-and-again until I "get it".  Satisfied I understand where he took me, I'll move onto the next tune.  Days/weeks later when I come back to that same song, I'll be darned that I learn something new with that next listen.

Bonus video of an ineligible song:  Kacey Musgraves singing "Burn One With John Prine" to John Prine

When sn0mm1s was still young and quite impressionable his parents played in a weekly game of duplicate bridge. Evidence of duplicate bridge can now only be found on clay tablets in cuneiform writing - but regaling stories of this dramatic, edge of your seat game may be overheard at your local retirement community. While these 4-8 couples were battling for the right to be called "The Best Duplicate Bridge Player of The Week" their children were removed from sight. Nothing as childish as children should distract these masters from their craft. Usually, this meant the children were to be watched by Susie - the lone teenager of the shunned and forgotten. "Susie is the boss," we were told in no uncertain terms. Susie's parents were wealthy, avid bridge players, and almost always hosted. Susie had a large bedroom. Susie had a TV. Susie had a TV with a VCR in her ####### bedroom!!! Susie also had an unhealthy addiction to the movie Grease. Sn0mm1s, for a period of months, watched Grease nearly every week. Now, this was not all bad as Olivia Newton-John was added to his first remembered Mt. Rushmore consisting of Lynda Carter, Catherine Bach, and Carrie Fisher - even a young sn0mm1s could recognize talent. However, the older, wiser, more jaded sn0mm1s doesn't know if this is a guilty pleasure, a legit catchy tune, horrible taste, nostalgia of sitting on a bed with a teenage girl (and sometimes her friends), an expression of Stockholm Syndrome, or an amalgamation of them all. But I have liked this song as far back as I can remember:

Round 17

You're The One That I Want - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John
When computers were newish i was in the poker biz and there was a gaming machine company marketing video poker tables. Hard to believe now, but NOBODY was paying attention to poker in those days (early 90s), so i was fascinated by anything that would raise the game's profile. We went to the company a few times and we didnt like it, nor thought our customers would, for live action. Many expressed that tournaments would go smoother on it, but the hardware cost would be prohibitive. That's when i came up with the idea to use the duplicate concept, which i knew from bridge, for tournament poker. We brought in a programmer and he wrote a program for duplicate tournaments where players could sit anywhere in a game, play a tourney for 100 hands and their chip total would be posted. You could enter as often as you liked then the top 10 scorers would play a live-action final table each week/month/whatever. We realized this concept could be teamed, so we went to a play-rating system. We rated all the starting hands by strength & position and the program ensured that each player would get the same quality of hands per 100 hands played, so an entrant would pay & play as many times as he liked knowing everyone had the same "luck" and the top 10 would final-table. It would have created great curiosity and buzz and a great way for players awaiting a seat to kill time on. Disagreements on personal stuff & profit participation grounded the project before it got off the ground, but i love the duplicate/rated-play concept for poker to this day. Total hijack i know, but this post made me think of it for the first time in decades. The thrills were muliPLYin, that's for sure....

I've seen them each of the last two years.  Love that song live.

Still waiting for my song to be drafted.   I think Binky won't take it because he has one from that artist already.

RD 17:  I've Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People - Yes

There are several Yes songs that I have refrained from using in the mix based on their length.  This one is less than 7 minutes and one of my favorites.  Maybe I can make a separate short list with a handful for an hour long prog playlist.

18.03 - Incubus, Summer Romance (Anti Gravity Love Song) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT7aDgdPDYQ

This is a bit of homer pick for me since I'm friends with one of the band members (yeah, look at me).  This album (S.C.I.E.N.C.E) brings back some fun memories of when my wife and I (before we were married) and a bunch of our friends would follow the band around before they really made it big. Seeing them go from little local hole in the wall dives to more famous smaller venues all over L.A./Hollywood to the major arenas was a great time.

This is a fun, funky tune off an album where they really experimented with a number of different styles while fully hitting their stride as a band.

Yeah, I was just trying to spook KP on the Neil Young thing ...though there a couple Neil's I would still really like in this mix.

Round 18

Which Way Will She Go? - God Street Wine

A New York City jam band that never quite made it huge but made it big enough to secure spots on the H.O.R.D.E. tour twice the second time being the third to last band ahead of Blues Travelar and The Black Crowes. I went back to the days where they played the 712 Club in Harlem, since a college buddy went to high school with Aaron.
This seems like five words to me.  Am I drunk?

Seems like that to me, too. Can't say for sure if you are drunk or not! ;)

Going thru to clean stuff up, and here is what is missing from Round 16-17.

Round 16
Mr. Ected
Northern Voice
Limp Ditka

Round 17
Limp Ditka
Steve Tasker
waingro
Bonzai
Northern Voice
Mr. Ected
Raging Weasel

There are 12 left for Round 18, a good portion of which are repeats from 16 and 17, so we're doing pretty well.

Hey, @KarmaPolice  I apologize if you've mentioned this, but are you going to allow any mulligans before finalizing the mixes?  I've got a song that I love in my draft list that just isn't fitting in the mix.  What say you?

Now that I have the data in some sort of order, I will get on with my draft...

16.04 - Burt Bacharach (w/The Barenaked Ladies) - (They Long To Be) Close To You - (1998) 7 words.

First recorded in 1963 by Richard Chamberlain, this Bacharach song was recorded by a bunch of people until it was made popular by The Carpenters.

This version was from a show in 1998 honoring Burt Bacharach. Many deem BNL as a silly pop band, but their original lead singer Steven Page has a spectacular voice that is often over looked. He does a great job with this song.

Also, are these mixes in draft order? I assume so, but that will also determine the order of my next two picks (I'm not likely -- likely) to get sniped on these.

For 18 I am going with a second Jim Croce song, partly because he suggest giving it a longer title.

The 'Official' title is -

18.04 - Jim Croce - Working at the Car Wash Blues (1974) 6 words.

But in this live version, he says the title is 'I Got 'Dem Steadily Depressin', Low Down, Mind Messin', Working at the Car Wash Blues' which is 15 words; hmmmm! ;)

That is also my jam.  I've always wondered how many wonderful pieces of music he would have produced had he not died so early.

Cool, thanks.

I think they are just two different strategies.  In the draft you sometime just have to go with the picks you think have the highest shot at being sniped at the start, but maybe that song works best toward the end of your mix.  Not sure we've even done a draft where you have to draft in the same order your mix is in.

So do people decided on their theme before the draft?  Take a song or two and see a theme form?  Say "#### themes" and take what they want?

I had a couple simple ones I was thinking of.  Took the Arctic Monkeys song first because that one fit a few themes as I decided which way to go.  I had thought about just doing a UK draft which wouldn't have been too bad.  Also thought about doing one with all the titles also being questions, but decided that would've been too hard for me.  Ended up with something that pushed me a tad, but still wasn't too horrible to find songs for.

Don't have a theme, so much as an attempt to get a whole range of lengths.
