MixTape Draft - Back to School edition. Make your picks and post your mix! (1 Viewer)

A lot of us band geeks in suburban Detroit were big blue fans but even those who weren't would play this all the time.
Always loved the song. So catchy. I can imagine so many local kids playing that song and loving Schembechler.

[football] Yeah, it's kind of where I started liking Jim Harbaugh back as a QB, actually, as a youngster. Always thought he was underrated. Was underrated in the pros, too. Bad teams, big arm and mobility, IIRC and IMO. Don't like him as a coach so much just by way of being demonstrative.

As punishment for cutting line, I will serve detention.

In other words, skip me. I'll be back around 1 to pick

Cool.

5.xx - Michigan Wolverine Fight Song

(dedicated to @Ilov80s)

Probably the greatest fight song I've ever heard. The Victors!
My dad has been a season ticket holder since 69 and so that song sends chills up my spine everytime I hear it. I'm not sure there's another song that has a more emotional attachment for me. When that song comes on, 110k people start singing along and those beautiful winged helmets come pouring out of the tunnel, it almost makes me cry everytime.

I might have to draft the only one that comes close.

Yep.  We loved Bo. Tolerated Mo.

College football has become somewhat of a sore topic between dad and me.  He's a wolverine but his second team is MSU. We've become fans of the tide since we've been in bama (3rd to me behind Kansas and Michigan) and he thinks Saban is Satan.

The Oak Ridges moraine runs from the Trent river system to the East all the way to the Niagara Escarpment to the west.

Its a protected area that features a lot of rivers, ponds, swamps, a lot wetter than the lakes and farmland of my previous cottage country pick Bobcaygeon

That was a really good song, NV. Is this a Canadian geography mix? if so, where should I start?

Military history Iced earth - hold at all costs

You could probably teach a good course just off Iced Earth songs.

I'm stealing a writeup.

the first part about the two soldiers on different sides of the war is about General Hancock and Gen(I think he was a general) Armistead, they were friends before the war and Armistead was quoted as saying "If I ever fight against you may God strike me dead." The second part is about Colonel Chamberlain's miraculous holding of Little Round Top(the unions flank.) Like Skeezix said, he was running out of ammo, but not only did they hold the line, they swept down the hill in a counterattack and crushed the rebs. Truly amazing probably my favorite story from the war.

EARJust a mile or so away
Is my dearest friend in this world
He wears the blue and I the grey
And God it hurts me so
The last time we were together
I grabbed his hand and I pledged
If I ever draw my sword on you
May the good lord strike me deThe union flank's in trouble
To the round top on the double
A bad decision, insubordination
Exposed our lie in a dangerous way

The burden lies upon us
Surrender is not an option
We are the flank and if we break
The union crumbles, we could lose the war

Down below's the carnage
The rebels charging onward
Push the slaughter forward, the peach orchard
Through the wheat field and devil's den

The valor of the Texans
And Alabama's best men
They're unrelenting and devastating
The last full measure of devotion's clear

We know what we're made of
When up against all odds we hold our line
For the cause that we so love
We must hold at all cost
We know what we're made of
When our nation needs us we'll stay the cause
For the union we so love
We must hold at all costs

Wave after wave they're coming
Their power must be waning
We're out of ammo, we can't fall back, no
One desperate measure, a means to end

On their next wave we charge them
There is no other option
Disconcert them, force submission
On my command, fix bayonets

We know what we're made of
When up against all odds we hold our line
For the cause that we so love
We must hold at all cost
We know what we're made of
When our nation needs us we'll stay the cause
For the union we so love
We must hold at all costs

Dammit.  How about I try to finish up your draft idea??
Go for it.. I'm not sure how pretty this was gonna be for me no matter what.. everything I'd come up with was getting sniped this time around. I'm finding this more fun to witness than participate in. School songs.. not my strong suit.. Sad

I have a few in my pocket still if anybody wants, stuff I had my eye on for a bit later in the exercise

6- Paschendale, Iron Maiden, History

In a foreign field he layLonely soldier, unknown graveOn his dying words he praysTell the world of PaschendaleRelive all that he's been throughLast communion of his soulRust your bullets with his tearsLet me tell you 'bout his yearsLaying low in a blood filled trenchKill time 'til my very own deathOn my face I can feel the falling rainNever see my friends againIn the smoke, in the mud and leadSmell the fear and the feeling of dreadSoon be time to go over the wallRapid fire and end of us allWhistles, shouts and more gun fireLifeless bodies hang on barbed wireBattlefield nothing but a bloody tombBe reunited with my dead friends soonMany soldiers eighteen yearsDrown in mud, no more tearsSurely a war no-one can winKilling time about to beginHome, far awayFrom the war, a chance to live againHome, far awayBut the war, no chance to live againThe bodies of ours and our foesThe sea of death it overflowsIn no man's land, God only knowsInto jaws of death we goCrucified as if on a crossAllied troops they mourn their lossGerman war propaganda machineSuch before has never been seenSwear I heard the angels cryPray to god no more may dieSo that people know the truthTell the tale of PaschendaleCruelty has a human heartEvery man does play his partTerror of the men we killThe human heart is hungry stillI stand my ground for the very last timeGun is ready as I stand in lineNervous wait for the whistle to blowRush of blood and over we goBlood is falling like the rainIts crimson cloak unveils againThe sound of guns can't hide their shameAnd so we die on PaschendaleDodging shrapnel and barbed wireRunning straight at cannon fireRunning blind as I hold my breathSay a prayer symphony of deathAs we charge the enemy linesA burst of fire and we go downI choke a cry but no-one hearsFeel the blood go down my throatHome, far awayFrom the war, a chance to live againHome, far awayBut the war, no chance to live againHome, far awayFrom the war, a chance to live againHome, far awayBut the war, no chance to live againSee my spirit on the windAcross the lines, beyond the hillFriend and foe will meet againThose who died at Paschendale

For our second quarter, going with South African History. Few more powerful songs, or songs better played live; gives me chills every time I hear it

6.12 - Peter Gabriel - Biko

This song is about Steven Biko, a noted black South African anti-apartheid activist. Biko had been arrested by the South African police in late August 1977. After being held in custody for several days, he was interrogated in room 619 of the Walmer Street prison in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. Following the interrogation, during which the police beat him and left him with serious head injuries, Biko was transferred without medical care to a prison in Pretoria, where he died shortly afterwards, on 12 September 1977. The album version of the song starts with a recording of the South African song "Ngomhla sibuyayo" and ends with a recording of the South African song "Senzeni Na?", both as sung at Biko’s funeral.

Mr. Ected, in regard to the spreadsheet, my only category is theology. I saw where hymns was written for category a couple times, but we were just studying hymns in theology class. I changed it on the spreadsheet. Bless you for keeping up with it.

Will keep it that way from from now on!!

For everyone else, check to see that I am doing things correctly. If you make any changes, or see any errors, just let me know!

This mix is such a mash up of stuff that I wouldn't normally look to draft.  I will admit to putting this together during a couple drunk nights, so forgive me in advance for any lack of flow.  Anyway, I will take another one that gets a hard element out of the way.

6.xx:  LOU REED - SET THE TWILIGHT REELING

LINK

As the twilight sunburst gleams
as the chromium moon it sets
As I lose all my regrets
and set the twilight reeling
I accept the new found man
and set the twilight reeling

Yo Mama University

Course: European Literature 245

Course Title: Killing an Arab

Instructor: The Cure

Course Description: Delve into the 20th Century classic L'Etranger, from Albert Camus.  It's not as cool as the goth kids with eye liner smoking cloves in the staff parking lot make it seem, but it's definitely more cool than 50-something Mrs. Walters tried to make it by playing the song in Yo Mama's English class in 1986 (snapping her fingers and waiting for all the students to proclaim her the "hippest" teacher ever).

Instructor Commentary: "Staring at myself reflected in the eyes of the dead man on the beach.  The dead man on the beach.  I'm alive, I'm dead.  I'm the stranger."

Yo Mama University

Course: Old Testament Studies 420

Course Title: Shadrach

Instructor: Beastie Boys

Course Description: Riddle me this my brother, can you handle it?  We continue our journey into the book of Daniel with the tale of three young Jewish men (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) who were thrown into King Nebuchadnezzar's fiery furnace when they refused to bow to the king's image.  Class is Wednesday mornings, so no smokin' and drinkin' on a Tuesday night.

Instructor Commentary: "Got more stories than J.D's got Salinger."
