Monday Night Football Has Lost It's Luster. (1 Viewer)

Losing its luster was sort of intentional. SNF is now the premier night game, according to the NFL and the price NBC paid.
Actually, ESPN is paying more for MNF....$1.1 B / year as compared to $600 M / year for NBC.But SNF seems like the premier game to me...especially considering they can change games later in the season.

Overall, the NFL earns $3.7 BILLION A YEAR in TV revenues!

Hmm, I stand corrected. Thought SNF paid more.Either way, if you look a the schedule and how the NFL allows the flex scheduling at the end of the year, it would seem SNF is the premier game. Makes you wonder why MNF didn't get those options, with paying almost twice as much.
There was a good article in USAToday summarizing, but I can't find it online. Here is a quick one:http://www.ocregister.com/ocr/2005/04/19/s...icle_486735.php

NBC also gets rights to 2 Super Bowls, the Thursday night Opener, and 2 Wild Card games.

ESPN also gets the NFL Draft and "other programming"...whatever that is.

Seems like money well spent for NBC...but a good one-line summary from the above is:

"ABC has been losing money on "Monday Night Football," according to reports, and cable channels such as ESPN can afford to pay higher rights fees because they receive monthly subscriber fees from distributors."

Does Marv Albert still do MNF on the radio?
yesIt's excellent with him and Boomer Esiason doing the game. I would much rather they were on the TV...I always liked Boomer, he didn't get along with Al Michaels, had way too much real world football knowledge and made Michaels appear pretty stupid on more than one occasion and that is when I started to dislike AM a lot...I have had to suffer thru his broadcasts for years now.

I think I would like a game when the only sounds we hear are the crowd and field. Just mic the field or have us hear the PA announcer to keep us up to date on firstdowns, who made the tackle etc.
NBC did this once back in the 80s with a Saturday Jets/Miami game IIRC. I don't think they received positive reviews.

You couldn't come up with a worse mix if you tried. Theisman just spouts off stuff without thinking. Kornheiser is a little to quick to pounce on Theisman when he does it and is coming off as kind of a weasel by doing it.

Theisman - not to sharp

Kornheiser - kind of an ahole

Tirico - I like Tirico, but as a group

= very subpar telecast

ESPN MNF Commentary has gone to pot. And why did they spen 15 minutes interviewing a basketball player in the booth? If I'd wanted basketball stuff, I wouldn' be watching MNF. Jeesh!
Simple...ESPN and ABC will begin their NBA broadcasting shortly...free advertising to a sports crowd. I agree that they need to get these people out of the broadcast booth who are not talking football. I could care less about the NBA or who can dance better (Emmit or Jerry).

The crew that worked the Raiders/Chargers Monday Night double header should be the permanent MNF crew.
I only watched the 1st half of that game and was pleasently surprised with those commentators...much better than that pompous ### Theiseman.

It's OBVIOUSLY ESPN and it's whole production staff. From the graphics to the announcers, they're definitely a full step down from other networks.
I think Fox's production is pretty bad; the stupid dancing robot, weak stat updates and tickers. CBS is better than all the others in terms of production.

And why did they spen 15 minutes interviewing a basketball player in the booth?
Because ABC and ESPN both have NBA broadcast contracts. What you witnessed was a commercial during (and over) the game. It's like watching a FOX game, and they get a 'surprise' visit from Kiefer Sutherland the day before 'a very special episode of 24'.Let's list the worse elements of each broadcast:ESPN: commentatorsFOX: annoying 'special effects' (if I hear one more ding, whirr, bang, I'm going postal)NBC: studio crewCBS: Actually not bad. Only criticism is not enough info on the 'crawl' during the games.

I don't think it has as much to do with the crew as it does with the network's agenda.

What the networks are doing for the Sunday night and Monday night games is transforming a sporting event into a reality show. They go above and beyond to create story lines and turn the focus of the GAME into a focus directly on the PLAYERS. Not only that, but more sideline reporting on personal things in addition to info that directly impacts the game.

That's why we will see a 2-14 team from last year this Monday (New Orleans) because it plays right into the story line and helps the network turn a football game into something geared towards a reality format. And the week after that, we get to visit another horrible team from last year (Green Bay) where the focus will be on Favre. They will talk about EVERYTHING that Farve has been through and the trials and tribulations of his family etc. The focus will not be the GAME, it will be a Favre reality show.

And this is what the great game of football has become.....at least in primetime.

Anyone remember Manning vs Manning last week? How many shots of the Manning family did we see? How many interviews about "how it feels" to have these two guys playing each other? It's very very sad that the game has become secondary.

The best thing about these ESPN MNF broadcasts is that once in a while we'll get a glimpse of the gorgeous Suzy Kolber. :) She is the most knowledgable female reporter in the game today.

I'll throw in my vote for Ms. Kolber to be part of the broadcast booth team. Easily. I loved when she hosted NFL Matchup on ESPN a couple of years ago. I can't figure out why she no longer does that gig. She was great with Sal Palantonio, Jaws and Hodge.

Here's my suggestion for a new broadcast team:

Kolber - Play-by-Play (she could easily handle this gig and it would be revolutionary.)

Jaws - Color Commentator (real football knowledge from a real fan of the game.)

Sal - Sideline Reporter (best in the biz, in my eyes.)

Rody

Interestingly, this discussion comes in on the anniversary of the first MNF game.

From Wikipedia:

Monday Night Football first aired on ABC on September 21, 1970, with a match between the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns, in Cleveland, Ohio. Advertisers were charged $65,000 per minute by ABC during the clash, a cost that proved to be a bargain when the contest collected 33 percent of the viewing audience.
I think three people is one to many. I like to see a team of **** Vermeil and Marshall Faulk.

We've been here almost weekly ranting about all the horrific gaffes Theeesman and Maguire made. They finally get someone in the booth willing to call him out on the same idiotic stuff everyone else notices, and you say he's "a little to quick to pounce"??? The real problem is Theesman, but if we have to deal with him, at least let Kornheiser point out what a buffoon he is.

why doesn't Jaws get a shot at the bigtime? He would be much better than Joe T and offer better X's and O's breakdown anyway.

Another thought, why don't Berman and TJ get the nod? They would be absolutely awsome if they could recapture their old routines like Berman: John Doe, from TJ: Yale!! or Berman: Amanni Toomer, the best dressed WR in the NFL or other of his names for people.

Fair enough. I'm still not sure how Theisman still has a job. Thing is, I really don't like listening to a game when drama between the announcers takes away from the game. I almost felt sorry for Theisman a few times. Kornheiser really made him look like such a fool a few times it was uncomfortable just listening to it on national tv. Would of lead to fisticuffs on some streets.

For the love of Pistol Pete Maravich, what the hell is wrong with you all? It's Football on Monday Night (in gorgeous Hi-Def)! Would you rather be watching Dancing with the Stars?I don't care if it's a trio of syphilis-ridden monkeys calling the game - It's Football on Monday Night!
:goodposting: What better way to kick back after the start of the workweek.....plus its a reason to drink on a Monday!!!!!!!!How can you go wrong!

There just seems to be something missing since MNF football moves to ESPN. I don't know if it's the lame play by play crew, the graphics they use, or something else. But the whole broadcast just seems flat the first 2 weeks. It lacks the excitement of when it was on ABC.The best thing MNF has going for it is when Cornhiser repeatedly calls out Theisman for making an assenine comment.
I agree but the reason isn't MNF losing its luster but the fact that ESPN decided to put the together the worst possible announcing crew. First there is Joey T. who never stops talking but rarely says anything appropriate. Trico who totally clueless. Kornheiser should have not be involved with ESPN in any capacity because he know absolutely nothing about any sport. The only he can talk about his himself.I'm amazed that ESPN with all there expertise is sports could put together such a terrible crew. I bet the football guys could put together a far supperior crew off the street.I get so perturbed watching the three idiots I usually turn off the TV or least turn the sound off and watch the play by play on NFL.com which has proven to be much more accurate then the broadcast. However the B crew did a crediable job so maybe they should replace the three bozos.I am anti-kornheiser because I live the DC area and that all you here is him and he is useless and should go back to his style column because he is a terrible sport writer and commentator. If he ever says anything intelligent it purely by accident. Joey T. was good when he was in the studio a few years ago but as an announcer no way. Most of the time i have no clue what game he is talking about.

the announcing crew is BORING! Completely lame.MNF w/o Madden stinks.

My five year old LOVES the robot -- and guess what -- that's what Fox was looking for -- something silly to engage the younger viewers during their dad's game. I can't stand Kornhoser at all -- he bugs me and I can barely stomach him on PTI. He has NO place in this booth except to bag on Joe T who is ther only b/c he's someone non-football fans can recognise in name. I agree with folks who call for the late MNF crew to get a shot. But even they were so-so. MNF isn't as important as it once was, for many reasons already covered previously. ESPN knows this - and they know they don't have to worry so much about ratings (cable stations just don't - they make money off subscribers more than commercials - and the commercials on MNF are just pretty much the same as any other ESPN broadcast so the market is perfect for them anyway). It could be worse guys. Picture:BermanIrvinJim Rome

I wish I could find an internet source or FM radio source that was in sync with my digital cable broadcast, which is usually about 10 seconds behind a normal broadcast. Any suggestions?

i hate how Tony Cornhole mentions that he has "player x" on his team everytime the guy makes a play

i'd love Berman to get in the booth... wooop woop woooop!

I like Tirico and Kornheiser is OK. He adds something different. Theismann can take a flying leap. Why not Jerome Bettis or Steve Young, Dan Marino, Robert Smith, Curtis Martin, Emmitt Smith, or Eric Allen, Steve Tasker...ya know...some of the likable guys that have retired.

I want the Monday night double header like in week 1 - that was great.

Theisman sucks. He sucked on Sunday Nights. He sucked in the studio. He sucked on the original American Gladiators. He must have naked pics of some ESPN execs wife, else I can't figure out why they keep him as their #1 analyst. Yup - gotta be some porn :pics: involved.

Kornlooser - OMG! Who at ESPN thought this was a good idea? If god loves me, he'll gimme 15 minutes in a cage match with that guy before I die.

Never-the-less, I watch the game because i love football and that is the only game on. I'm looking forward to the new NFL broadcasts on Thursdays and Saturday nights. "By :football: people, for :football: people" We will see..... we will see.......

===================================================================

To the guys with NO CABLE! Get on and come to the 20th century, you'll like it here.

:goodposting: Be interesting -- maybe in a year or two when they have some seasoning in broadcast. You can add Tiki Barber whenever he hangs it up. He's desperate to get into broadcast post career. It'd be fun to hear some of the recent retirees chat about guys they just played with/against.

Are you guys really not going to watch your team play on Monday night because the ####### broadcast has changed? Call me crazy, but I'm thinking you'll watch.
DVR it and watch it on a 10 second delay, or 5min...whatever. As long as you don't watch it live, it affects their ratings.
:tinfoilhat: Pssst. Ratings are based on polls, or on a sampling of people who have volunteered with Nielsen to have their viewing habits tracked. Either by keeping a diary, or by a device that keeps track and transmits the results.Unless you're a Nielsen Family or get polled, whether you watch something or not doesn't affect the ratings.

I like how even people AT ESPN know they have the wrong crew on:From The Sports Guy's Page 2:

Second, we all made such a fuss about ESPN's new Monday night announcing team ... and they ended up getting upstaged by the makeshift team for the second game (Brad Nessler, **** Vermeil and Ron Jaworski). Those guys sounded like they had been doing games for 20 years together. They were fantastic. That was, um ... what's the word ... ironic.

In my opinion, Gifford, Simpson and Namath were easily the worst announcing team of all time.
Only if you took them seriously. Personaly I thought they were truly hilarious in a laugh at kind of way - especially when the game was bad and they'd try and fill, you can't write that kind of comedy.

It's excellent with him and Boomer Esiason doing the game.
I really enjoy their broadcasts as well, Albert does great play by play and for whatever reason Boomer is much more informative and less annoying on radio. I get tired of the Johnsonville Brats ads at every commercial break, but what can you do?

Yep. I saw that game and I thought it was great - much more enjoyable than having to deal with the constant yammering of some halfwits in suits. It was better than muting because the crowd and ambient noises really drew me into the game. But the ratings on it were terrible so they haven't tried that experiment again.

Cornhiser is a joke (not the funny kind) the other two guys are ok. I miss Al Michaels but I a don't miss Madden (but I still watch Sunday night FB :loco: ) To me Madden is the worse in the business, a walking talking cartoon IMHO.

The football is what I really watch...I tune out the rest after awhile.

On Cornyhiser....Why do they insist putting a non-football guy on MNF? There are several talented jokes they don't need a court jester............

:goodposting: I abhor the stupid interviews they are now doing in the booth. They aren't even caring about the game for 1/2 an quarter... the problem is, I don't think they are leaving... each week we will be stuck with the next pointless celeb that is at the game, probably courtesy of ESPN... Sunday Night football feels more like Monday Night football to me. They should move the team that did the SD vs Oak 2nd Monday night game onto the normal Monday night game. They were extremely more talented to be in the booth and actually cared to notice there was a NFL football game in progress that they were covering!

The interviews aren't new. How long ago was it that Howard Cosell interviewed John Lennon?

I agree the interviews aren't new, but it just seems they aren't caring about the game anymore... it's talk, talk talk, with the camera in the booth, then they cut away for a second to see the play run, then cut back to the booth, disregarding anything about the game...

I agree with a posting above too, it's becoming more like reality player TV instead of a football game...

Although I don't think that their presentation is top notch either, I don't think that it is horrible. I certainly will watch it because it is football as opposed to not watching it!

There has to be some reason that their ratings are higher than ever before ... it can't be the sideline reports. Where's Goose?

I want to know why they don't have a fixed camera at each goal line. Like the cyclops in tennis. It would sure help in many instances where the only available camera angle is insufficient to give conclusive evidence of whether the ball crossed the plane of the goal line or not. A perfect example is Heath Miller's touchdown. Was the ball over the plane of the goal line when his foot went out of bounds? Is doesn't look like it from the available camera angles, but we'll never know because the angle does not allow us to look perpendicular to the plane ...

Actually I did not mind the interview with Governor Schwartzenagger or Dwayne Wade. They are better than interviewing the coaches. What do they really expect the coaches to say anyway?

Agree on coach interviews. Those things are almost always 100% worthless.

I agree MNF isn't the same anymore it feels like last years Sunday night football. However, Sunday night football feels more like the old MNF with Madden and Michaels.

How about this idea. Keep Tirico, maybe get someone else in there too (Jaws?), and how about putting in the home team's own broadcast crew. I'd love to hear some of the folks calling games for local teams. I would have loved to hear Van Miller call a Buffalo Bills game on TV. Who better to give insight and color on the local teams. Does it take some of the impartiality out of it, sure. But man it would be an improvement.

I still look forward to MNF even tho it does seem to "lack it's luster" these days.

Theisman has been annoying for so long.. it's nice to see someone call him on his BS. Tony was a bit timid during the first game although he did start to question Theisman. He must have got some positive feedback on his style because he really didn't hesitate during week 2's game.

Now as much as I love FFL.. I'd really do OK without knowing Kornheiser's fantasy interests. He also talks about other gambling relating to the game "I told you the under was good here" .. crap like that. He needs to know that his job is to talk about the game and stay away from the other stuff. Nobody cares that he has Matt Jones starting in his lineup.

Anyways I'll keep watching.. As others have said Hi-Def NFL on Monday Night.. thats all I need.
