Most Depressing Movies (1 Viewer)

An obvious inclusion is Schindler's List.

A less obvious choice is The Notebook. Stupid movie. I don't cry. Like very rarely. My adult children still bring up that one time dad had water in his eyes watching The Notebook. Stupid movie. Ha ha

I haven't seen it in a couple decades, but I remember Kevin Costner's "A Perfect World" as being pretty sad and depressing.

(That may have been because Costner was in it though. )

when a man loves a woman about the impact of alcoholism on a marriage is also very sad and a hard watch take that to the bank brochachos

Requiem for a Dream

This was the first movie that instantly came to mind but if you're looking for depression you're sure to find many in his filmography i.e. The Wrestler, The Whale, etc
Same, re Requiem.

Killing Fields
Leaving Las Vegas
Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Sophie's Choice

Lars Von Trier makes some gut punching (breaking the ways, dancer in the dark) depressing movies, but they always strike me as too manipulative for me to allow myself to get emotionally involved...im usually frustrated more than depressed.

The Whale was a pretty uncomfortable watch, although probably not quite as bleak as some of the others already mentioned.

Requiem for a dream. Full stop. One of my favorites, but I can't watch it again.

Aronofsky is a brilliant film maker and this might have been his opus.

A few listed were the ones that pooped in my head too - Requiem, Kids, The Road, etc..

One that I didn't see and is a rare movie I won't try again was the documentary Dear Zachary: A Letter to His Son About His Father. I am not sure I've ever cried so hard watching something.

Here's my list... I'm sure this isn't everything but these movies all made me tear up...
  • Any of those stupid movies where the dog dies. OLD YELLER, MARLEY AND ME, etc...
  • MY GIRL had me deep in my feelings as a kid
  • BAMBI was the first movie I cried at. Mom tells me I was crying and asked, "His mom died?" in the theater
  • Stupid IRON GIANT
  • THE FOX AND THE HOUND
  • UP got me. The beginning of it where they find out they can't have kids. My wife was 4 months pregnant after we tried for years.
  • I couldn't make it through SCHINDLER'S LIST
  • On that note, THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS was brutal

That's all I can think of, and a surprising number of them are cartoons, lol.

Seconded for Kids. Just a crappy tale.

One that I'd have to see again to see if it was depressing as I remember; but Threads. I remember watching it in high school (near the end of the Cold War) and just being like....nuclear war would REALLY suck.

Hardball.....it was a kids movie. They didn't have to do what they did.
Yeah but it gave us the "we're going to the 'ship!" line which I pretty much use in every instance some team of mine goes to the championship for something.

Definitely Requiem and Leaving Las Vegas.

I'll add Less than Zero. The movie and the parallel to Downey's life a the time.

And D.O.A. Dennis Quaid was quite good in this one.

shocked nobody has put up Se7en especially since it was higlighted in another thread.
Eh, that was probably more shocking. I get that the overall film was shot in a depressing fashion (it never seemed to be sunny, some of the deaths were depressing) but I don't view Se7en on the same plane of depression like I would many already listed in this thread.
