I haven't bothered to read this entire thread, but very few people in the media have explained why "the play" is being talked about over and over again.
NFL officials make bad calls or miss calls all the time. In the game on Sunday, some were made that favored the Cowboys and some were made that favored the Lions.
In some cases, when a bad call is made... officials get together, discuss it, and reverse the call on the field immediately. If that had happened in this case, there would be some outrage in Detroit by fans who felt they were wronged... but not to this level.
In this case, you have a call made. Whether it was the right or wrong call does not matter. The penalty was called... THEN IT WAS ANNOUNCED TO THE ENTIRE STADIUM WITH 15 YARDS MARKED OFF ON THE FIELD. THEN... SOMEHOW... ROUGHLY 20 SECONDS LATER IT WAS REVERSED WITH NO EXPLANATION WHATSOEVER TO THE CROWD AND THE HEAD REFEREE WOUND THE CLOCK TO RESUME PLAY.
In 30+ years of watching NFL football, I've never seen anything like that happen. Has anyone else?
To continue my final thought... when it was 4th and 1. Stafford spent the first 5 to 10 seconds of the play clock arguing with the officials. The coaching staff was probably prepared to run a 1st and 10 play from the 30 instead of a 4th and 1 play. Rather than calling a timeout to get a proper play call, they decided to try to bluff the Cowboys offside... and it didn't work.
Basically... on top of the precedent setting way this call was handled... it prevented the Lions from possibly going on 4th and 1 without taking a timeout. Would they have gone for it anyway? I have no idea... maybe not. We'll never know
One thing I can say is that I've never seen another play handled like this by NFL officials in any game. EVER

The refs caused those 6 turnovers?
