NFL Coaching Changes: 2005 (1 Viewer)

FWIW - Here are a couple additions to the Dolphins staff.

The Miami Dolphins named Tim Davis their assistant offensive line coach and Bert Hill as an associate strength coach on Monday.
Davis comes to the Dolphins after more than 15 years in the college ranks, including the last three with Southern California, which has claimed two straight national titles. He's also coached at Wisconsin, Arizona, Idaho State, Walla Walla (Wash.) Community College and Utah -- his alma mater.Hill was on the Detroit Lions' staff from 1990 through 2000 as an strength and conditioning coach, plus worked with both the offensive and defensive lines. Prior to that, he coached at Texas A&M and Ohio State. Since 2001, Hill has worked in private business in Dallas and has co-authored several books on strength and conditioning.LINK

A couple more....

I couldn't find much info on Gibbs, but this may effect the Falcons?

Legendary offensive line coach Alex Gibb will step down as Atlanta's full-time offensive line coach. Citing stress, the former Denver coach will only work three days a week installing gameplans. Considering the huge strides the Falcons made under Gibb, this is a blow. LINK

Also of lesser importance...

Packers look to New Orleans for secondary coach

The Green Bay Packers are reportedly close to finalizing their defensive coaching staff after New Orleans secondary coach Joe Baker accepted an offer from head coach Mike Sherman to join his staff. Baker was in Green Bay to meet with Packers officials recently. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Saints coach Jim Haslett had given Baker permission to interview with the Packers dispite having a year left on his contract with the Saints. LINK

RE: Gibbs, he had the exact same relationship in Denver in his last few years, and they seemed to be just fine. I wouldn't worry to much about that impact of that move as he'll be there to pass on the finer points of his zone blocking techniques.

Thanks for the reminder Jason, I had forgotten about that. In any event, just passing along the news as I find it. :D

The San Francisco 49ers hired former Purdue assistant Gary Emanuel on Monday as their defensive line coach.

Emanuel spent the past eight seasons at Purdue, where he most recently coached the defensive ends. He also spent three seasons coaching the defensive line at Washington State and four seasons at Syracuse. Emanuel spent four training camps as a member of the NFL Minority Fellowship program.

San Francisco also hired Johnny Parker as its strength and conditioning coach. Parker spent the 2002 season in Tampa Bay, helping the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl. He has been in the private sector the last two years. LINK

A few more hirings....

Cowboys add new running backs coach

IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys filled their final staff vacancy Wednesday with the addition of running backs coach Anthony Lynn. Lynn spent the past two seasons in the same role for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is the third and final new assistant on the Cowboys' staff.

Lynn spent six seasons in the NFL, mostly as a special teams player, and was with Denver when the Broncos won the Super Bowl in 1997 and 1998. He later joined the Broncos as an offensive assistant in 2000.

Lynn, 36, was a running back at Texas Tech from 1988-91. LINK

Giants hire Sheridan as linebackers coach

Bill Sheridan, an assistant coach at Michigan for the past three seasons, was hired by the New York Giants Wednesday as their linebackers coach. Sheridan replaces Bill Davis, who left after one season to become the defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. LINK

Former UCLA assistant named Bears defensive line coach

The Chicago Bears hired former UCLA assistant coach Don Johnson as the team's defensive line coach Wednesday. Johnson replaces Karl Dunbar, who left the Bears after last season to become the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at LSU. Johnson, 50, has been a college coach since 1987, when he was an assistant at Riverside Community College in southern California. LINK

IIRC this is one of the best S+C coaches there is and he's mentioned quite a bit in one of Parcells' books.

Jaguars name Campo secondary and assistant head coach

Former Dallas head coach Dave Campo joined the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday as assistant head coach and secondary coach. The 57-year-old Campo spent the past two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, but he was not expected to be retained on the staff by new Browns coach Romeo Crennel, who replaced the fired Butch Davis.

Last season, the Browns were in the middle of the pack in the total defense rankings, but gave up an NFL worst 144.6 yards rushing and ranked 24th in scoring defense (24.4 points).

Campo is the third new member to join coach Jack Del Rio's staff this offseason. The Jags also hired Georgia defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder as linebackers coach and named Southern Cal quarterbacks coach Carl Smith as offensive coordinator.

I agree Bri, this should be an excellent hire. This caught my eye as well. Unfortanetly, they will need much more than a good strength and conditioning coach.

Saints promote Henry, hire Pyne as assistant offensive line coach

Jim Pyne was hired as assistant offensive line coach while offensive line coach Jack Henry was promoted to associate head coach and running game coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, the team announced Thursday.

"I wanted to hire a bright coach who has proven skills as a teacher and who understands the fundamentals and techniques of playing up front," coach Jim Haslett said of Pyne. "Jim will also have the assistance of Jack, who is one of the best offensive line coaches in the business and a wealth of knowledge."

Pyne has worked as the offensive quality coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the last two seasons. He joined the Tampa Bay staff after nine years as a player in the league, the Saints said in a news release.

Spokesman Greg Bensel said Henry will continue to oversee the offensive line while serving as be the chief adviser to Haslett and offensive coordinator Mike Sheppard in all aspects of the rushing attack. LINK

Browns eyeing Houston's Grantham for defensive coordinator

Todd Grantham, the defensive line coach of the Houston Texans the last three years, was in Berea yesterday interviewing for the job head coach Romeo Crennel expected to award to Eric Mangini. Mangini respectfully turned down the Browns after being interviewed last Friday to become defensive coordinator in New England after five seasons as the Patriots secondary coach. The Browns made no formal announcement of the Grantham interview yesterday, but Crennel said when he was hired Feb. 8 that he hoped to have the bulk of his staff, particularly the coordinators, hired before the coaches head to the scouting combines in Indianapolis next week.

The only other team interested in Grantham as defensive coordinator is the Miami Dolphins. Grantham interviewed with Dolphins head coach Nick Saban last month. The Dolphins remain interested.

A decision by Grantham could be made before the weekend. He has coached the 3-4 defense, which Crennel wants the Browns to use.LINK

Update

Crennel adds two more coaches to Browns staff

Todd Grantham, who spent the past three seasons coaching Houston's defensive linemen, was hired as defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel also added Dave Atkins to his staff as running backs coach. Atkins was with New Orleans the last five seasons. Atkins previously worked with Crennel in 1993 on Bill Parcells' staff in New England. LINK

Browns hired John Lott as their S+C coach, from Plain Dealer:Lott joins the Browns after eight years as the Jets' strength and conditioning coach, where he worked with Crennel from 1997-99. He replaces Buddy Morris, who was let go last week. Lott has trained many Olympic athletes, including gold medalists Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell and Mike Marsh. Overall, his athletes have garnered six world records and 12 Olympic medals. "I've admired John's work since we were together with the New York Jets," said Crennel. "He has the uncanny ability to get the most out of his players. The results are stronger, faster players who endure on the field for a longer period of time."

Following up on R. White's Grantham hiring, Cleveland will use a 3-4 D. Snip from NFL.com: Todd Grantham, who spent the past three seasons coaching Houston's defensive linemen, was hired as defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. Browns coach Romeo Crennel also added Dave Atkins to his staff as running backs coach. Atkins was with New Orleans the last five seasons. The Texans played a 3-4 defensive scheme, the kind Crennel used with New England and wants to implement with the Browns. "Todd is energetic and dynamic in how he motivates his players, helping them reach their potential," Crennel said. "He has a good background with the 3-4 defense and will certainly enhance what we are building here." Grantham wasn't Crennel's first choice. The Browns tried to lure Patriots defensive backs coach Eric Mangini to Cleveland, but Mangini stayed with New England, replacing Crennel as defensive coordinator. Atkins previously worked with Crennel in 1993 on Bill Parcells' staff in New England.

This is the 2nd Pack DB coach which is odd but interesting. Apparently in Miami(and they're reassembling Miami's D staff in a way) they used two coaches for the DBs. Miami had a tough D for a good long while. I wonder if this will be the trend. Here's a link

Browns hired Randy Melvin a Rutgers U DL coach to be their DL coach. He was the Pats DL coach in 2000-2001. This means he backed out of being an Illini Assistant

and local guy Mel Tucker to be their DBs coach

Tucker leaves OSU to join Crennel

By Marla Ridenour, Beacon Journal staff writer

During his days as a football and basketball standout at Cleveland Heights High School, Mel Tucker might have never dreamed of working for his hometown Browns.

But coach Romeo Crennel plucked Tucker off Ohio State coach Jim Tressel's staff Friday to coach defensive backs.

Tucker spent the past four seasons directing the same position at OSU, along with serving as co-defensive coordinator in 2004. His career also includes two years at Michigan State with Todd Grantham, named the Browns' defensive coordinator on Thursday.

"Coaching at Ohio State has been an unbelievable experience, and I will always have a special place in my heart for the Buckeyes and our national-championship team," Tucker said.

"To have the opportunity to work with Romeo Crennel, who has created defensive gems the last three out of four Super Bowls, is one I could not pass up.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for me to be closer to my family, which still lives in the Cleveland area."

Crennel spent the afternoon in Washington, D.C., at the State Department, speaking to a group of students as part of a Black History Month celebration.

"I was honored to even be considered for this program," Crennel said.

"The youth of this country are very special. I wanted to talk to them about capitalizing on their education and other opportunities throughout their lives. My hope is that what I said can make a difference for at least one individual who attended today."

In an interesting move by Cowboys coach Bill Parcells this week, "The Tuna" put assistant head coach Sean Payton in charge of the passing game and gave new offensive-line coach Tony Sparano guidance over the rushing attack. That means the Cowboys could actually go into the '05 season with no one designated as the offensive coordinator. It also means that Parcells might again call a lot of the plays, as he has the last two years.

Falcons | Gibbs Could Have Duties Changed - from www.KFFL.com

Tue, 22 Feb 2005 09:21:48 -0800

Matt Winkeljohn, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports the Atlanta Falcons have held internal discussions about the future of offensive line coach Alex Gibbs, who could have his duties changed to that of a part-time consultant/offensive line coaching role with the team.
It may not sound like much, but the last time Gibbs went to a part-time/semi-retirement role, it appeared to have an impact on the respective team's running game. Just ask Mike Shanahan.

Ya when he took that role they had their best RB ever in Clinton Portis.
