NFL viewership off 11% YOY (2 Viewers)

NFL is only fun if it is your team, or you are gambling on it.

NCAA is fun to watch regardless of whether you have money on it.

Both products are starting to push the boundaries of my attention span, however.

Red Zone was quite boring several times today.
It was but I think that was because of a combo of things. You have the double-header on Monday night. You had the early bye game called--so that took a couple of games out of play that normally would  have filled the void.

I still stand by my thought they should do away with the Thursday night game and maybe the Sunday night game and a double header is stupid on Monday night. Yeah a lot of East Coast people will stay up until 2:00 am to watch the end of this one.

as a jet fan, give me a good reason to bother this year?  without a qb in this league, don't bother.  every preview show has a booth of 7 guys analyzing nothing.  zillions of penalties in between the wife beatings and arrests.  so many injuries.  gonna be another looong season.

I think part of it is that we as a general public are requiring more and constant stimulation.   While I do agree that the NFL product has devolved a bit for a variety of reasons (bad officiating for example)--I think that we are overlooking that we as a public has changed.  It takes far more to get our attention, and I wonder if we are being naive thinking that the game just "sucks" now while ignoring the dynamic that we and our expectations have also changed very much.
The general proliferation of ADD is definitely a factor in all this. Its a main driver for the Red Zone popularity.  Many fans just don't have the patience to consume a football game in its entirety. The Packers-Seahawks game yesterday is a great example.  The first half ended 3-0 and was a great back and forth between two NFC power teams; top offense against top defense.  I've never claimed to be a knowledgeable tactics guy, but even I could see multiple interesting storylines developing in the game and was looking forward to seeing the teams' reactions after halftime.  I jumped online at halftime and all I see are people saying how boring the game is.

So, having just the local Bengals game (a fiasco) at 1, and only Green Bay/Seattle at 4 doesnt seem likely to reverse the viewership trend. (and definitely not in my individual case).

Either the local affiliates can't afford to carry the games, or the NFL thinks a whole lot more people are going to switch providers and fork up the extra for Sunday Ticket.

At this rate, FC Cincinnati will be buying Paul Brown Stadium from Hamilton County in 5 years.
What was wrong with the Seattle/GB matchup, 2 playoff caliber teams?  Also, I think there were only 3 late afternoon games , maybe because of 2 Monday night games.  I see more GB and Seattle jerseys worn than probably any other non-local team.

Parking at the stadium is only $30 per car...

I agree it should just be Sunday day, 1 sunday night game and 1 monday night game with the best game of the week they have on schedule for Monday night.

Yeah I don't get the point of the 2nd MNF game to open the season. Are people on the East Coast really going to stay up til 1:30-2am to watch the Broncos-Chargers? I mean, people in LA barely want to watch the Chargers.

the Thursday game has annoyed me beyond belief as well.  then their are London games, then mexico city.  a meaningless preseason.  I still grapple hard to understand contracts.  guaranteed vs non guaranteed vs march cut vs. july cuts.  I am struggling to understand how mo Wilkerson makes 18million a year.  but, it seems we can cut him before march when his salary becomes guaranteed.  lord knows, his money is more of a guarantee than his performance.

I love that there were like 27 fans at that Rams game yesterday. Hope the NFL fails miserably there.
My sister-in-law had 4 free tickets to the game. Her dad was the only taker on attending. The rest of the family and I opted to go the the Rose Bowl flea market...
L.A. doesn't care about the NFL.

I have plenty of it. I am a Gen X NFL guy. But the sheer amount of replay stoppages and commercials is a huge turn off. I grew up watching football in the golden age and there was nothing better than the NFL between 1980-1999.

Ever since the turn of the century.....all down hill and still rolling fast downhill.

Like I said......I will watch my team and if a great game is on....I will watch. But with Red Zone....I flip to it on commercials....so I am great. Without Red Zone.....it would be hard because of the quality of the league (IMO the game is not what it used to be at all) and the incredible amount of stoppages and analyzing if it was a catch for 20 ####### minutes.

TNF is pure garbage and they need to scrap it...please just scrap it. And MNF is over. It’s all about SNF now. Scrap that too (MNF).

I had no idea there was a Thursday game last week. I was hanging out with some friends Saturday afternoon and they started talking about the Patriots losing - was the first I heard of it. Apparently it was a pretty good game, so a pity I guess. Other than Packer games, I've not watched a Monday or Thursday night game in many years.

Ratings are down, but NFL still seems more popular than ever among college age students, at least where I live.

I hate the Thursday night game so much.

The alternative is a late game on Sunday afternoon only aired regionally. With the Rams already in that time slot on CBS in LA, not sure how that would have worked. I think many more people will see this game Monday night than Sunday afternoon.

Sure, more people have a chance to watch it, but there is zero chance I am staying up to watch it.

I agree with all of this. I just wish they moved a couple of the early games to the 4pm time slot to even out the amount of games they bounce between. And as you said, perfect ad break material if you have a home team you are watching.

Nothing in particular wrong with that one game, my beef is that it was the only option. It's utterly ridiculous that I had more choices of Sunday games when I was a kid and had access to 7 free over the air channel, 4 of which were either PBS or small-time independents.

hmm, how will this work for LA time slots going forward?  I know in NY they normally put one at 1 and one at 4, but not really an option for LA since on the west coast.

looks like they are same time a few times, but mostly split apart by east coast road games or playing on different days.

Saw a stat on CNBC today that had average news viewership of 175K last Thursday for NFL opening night.  This year it was 2.2 Million, up almost 1,300%.  The hurricane and end of world Trump craze must have people glued to the news.

Hmmm. If I want to go to a Seahawks game, it'll run me at least $200 including gas and parking.

But I can get a round trip flight to L.A. for $140 that arrives Sunday morning and leaves that night. Might have to seriously consider this.
Pats fans have been doing this for years for Bills home games.  Most years, it is a lot cheaper, even with a hotel stay thrown in.

Really? When and where was this?

I'm not saying we had football on 7 channels. I'm saying we only had 7 channels, and the two networks that had NFL rights always showed 2 games at 1 and 2 more at 4 on Sundays.

This was Cincinnati-area all through the 80's.

Always? So if the Bengals were playing at 1, there was another game being shown opposite of it?

Yes. The Bengals were terrible, so I switched channels a lot. Not sure when they stopped putting games on opposite the Bengals, and if it started with just road games, or blacked out home games, or whatever. It's just that I remember 4 games, and no vintage TV guide will ever override my nostalgic brain cells. (Geez,I'm old enough to remember not only payphones, when they went from a dime to a quarter, but also when you had to buy the newspaper to find out what was going to be on TV for the week.)

The Rams will probably usually be on Fox, leaving CBS for the Chargers.

I don't think the NFL has ever allowed multiple games to be broadcast to the same audience as the home team on networks.  You may have lived on some boundary where you could just pick more channels up because you are in the NE OTA.

I think the popularity of the RZ channel proves a lot of the point of the poor product.  People are realizing they are watching 3.5hrs+ of a program for what, 20mins of actual football action?  No wonder they have to package it together and skip back and forth between games.

My crazy buddy said they should get rid of field goals and PATs.  I initially laughed, but teams going for it more on fourth down near the end zone would generate a lot more exciting plays.

The replay process is painful.  How long did they really need for Diggs second TD?  As soon as the replay officials see that play, they should be reviewing the footage in anticipation it's going to get reviewed.  Should have been 10-15 seconds max.

Simply put, there needs to be some rules changes to football if it's gonna survive.

- Play clock shortened to 16 seconds, or disallow huddles altogether.

- No radio communication between players and coach.

- All coaches at field level. Limited number of coaches (non-medical) on field.

- Maximum game day lineup of 28 players.

- No kickoff unless kicking team elects to kick from their own 20. Ball starts 80 yards from end zone. This should reduce injuries, but allow onside kicks.

- Extra points are a given 1 point, no kick needed. You can elect to go for 2, but you start at the 5. You can elect to go for 3, but you start at the 20. You can go "double or nothing", which could erase your 6 point touchdown, but you start at the 35.

- Only 1 non-injury timeout inside 2 minutes, which no longer stops play.

- Commercial breaks limited to 60 seconds, and a maximum of 2 breaks per 10 minutes allowed.
