Beyoncé finally winning a best album Grammy for Cowboy Carter feels like the inevitable make up call after refs blow a blatant pass interference

Is Chappel Roan a real drag queen? I honestly don't know. Her red carpet look was the absolute pits no matter who designed it.

I couldn’t care less about an artist’s fashion or how they present themselves. For me, it’s about the music and whether or not I like it. Same back in the day with Poison or KISS. Billie Eilish’s music is pretty amazing. I don’t really care how she dresses or what she presents or doesn’t present in terms of her sexuality.
I don’t get it, it’s just a bunch of mumbling on top of some decent beats

I disagree but am not too invested in trying to change anyone’s mind. Certainly some of her songs are precisely what you describe. But, by way of example, one of her more popular songs is Birds of a Feather (nearly 2 billion streams) where she definitely sings over a beat, but the melody is extremely well-written and catchy and her vocal performance (imo) is outstanding.

Wildflower is another popular tune of hers that is anything but her mumbling over a beat. Most of the song is her vocal over a stripped down acoustic guitar (it builds over time to a more powerful instrumental arrangement). Nothing about music is objective, but I think the songwriting and arrangement is absolutely terrific and her vocal delivery is beautiful and extremely emotive.

And then there is What Was I Made For. The vocal control it takes to pull off this vocal (live is as good or better) is off the charts difficult. And from a songwriting and performance standpoint (I know much of the credit goes to her brother as well), this is as good of a song and vocal performance as I have heard since Adele’s early hits.

Of course, this is all just my opinion and I get that folks disagree. But musically and vocally, I think Billie Eilish is a national treasure and I hope more people my age give her a chance. Just skip the dance tracks if that’s not your thing.

I missed this part. Queering and drag queening isn't about sexuality necessarily. It's about gender and norms. As a matter of fact, queer theory simply posits itself against norms and has little to do with sexuality. That might seem counterintuitive, but it is.

I would ask for grace from members of the board before they jump down my throat about it. You’ll remember that as early as 2014/5 I saw the big trans debates coming. People on the board thought I was nuts. Queering is huge in the younger generation and people into queer theory look like Chappell. It’s inspired by Judith Butler and Gayle Rubin, among others. It’s a long story, and I don’t fully get it yet, but I know it now when I see it.

Was I jumping down your throat? That wasn’t my intent. I was simply remarking that when it comes to music, I pretty much only care about the music. The aspects of the music industry and its artists dealing with fashion or culture or norms or theory are of little interest to me when it comes to music, even if it is part of their identity and/or marketing.

This is where I fall in as well. I like her. I mean she’s a bizarre jaded superstar weirdo but as far as they go, she seems pretty likable. Confused but likable.
How is she confused?

Oh no, you weren't at all. I'm talking about potentially others reading it. You were simply discussing. I'm very cool with that.

I miss the days when all the musicians were straight-laced, red-blooded, gritty hard workers who only delivered kickassssss tunes that we could rock out too.....artists like Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Boy George, Wham just to name a few. We're really lost our way as a society, man.

Those are all seventies or later. You could argue we lost our way back then.

And they're all Brits or Aussies, too, so you could argue that they lost their way, really, and that the U.S. is just going through it only ours are young women who are going through it and not expressive men.

The only act I personally like from that list is Queen, even though John was also ultra talented.

Dang man, I LOVE Elton John. I like most of his stuff, but early on, he had some real bangers. Give "Empty Sky" a spin. "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". 'Bout to jump up and do some Beavis and Butthead moves.

She’s a filthy rich under 30-year-old. She’s a ****ing idiot.

Just because you’re good at one thing doesn’t magically give you wisdom. She’s good at talking over her brothers awesome music but miss me with anything else she has to say.

This is not limited to Billie Eilish.

I don’t know about any of that, but I just wish they could sing without assistance.

I think truly talented vocalist aren’t wanted by the music industry because that talent is their leverage. It’s the one thing that makes them special.

Now the majority of “singers” cannot hold a tune.

Who are the great singers of today?
Adele? She’s 40.
Beyoncé? Also close to 40. Despite all my criticism, she can sing pretty well (not Linda Ronstadt level, which has some of you know is the gold standard for me, but she can sing.

I think Dua Lipa can sing her butt off, but wastes her time on crappy Poppy dance music.

Who else?

According to recent trends and popular opinion, Taylor Swift is widely considered one of the best vocalists currently active, often topping lists for her wide range, emotional delivery, and consistent quality across different genres; other notable names frequently mentioned include The Weeknd and Drake for their strong vocal presence and widespread popularity.

I know you’re not with me on this but Billie has an incredible voice. It is 10x more difficult to sing quietly with control than it is to belt Whitney Houston style. This live performance is jaw-droppingly good from a vocal talent standpoint. Hate her breathiness all you want, they are using this as an instructional video in vocal studio classes across the country. And she’s 23.

Benson Boone was nominated for Best New Artist. He is 22. Ignore his ridiculous getup and all the acrobatics. The kid can sing.

Teddy Swims was also nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys, though he is 32. Here is his live performance from the Billboard Music Awards. The guy is an astonishingly talented singer.

Is there a lot of shenanigans in the studio with auto-tune and the like with many artists of today? Sure. But there is also still a ton of real vocal talent out there. The above are just a few of countless examples. To say that truly talented singers aren’t wanted by the music industry is simply not the case.

Please show with links what credible sites have Swift listed as the best current vocalist alive. (not AI crap)

I am a Swift fan, but no one, outside of her most hardcore fans who probably listen to no one else, thinks that. Swift herself identifies as a songwriter first and foremost, not a singer. She would never claim to be an Adele or Beyonce or Mariah Carey vocally.

Its not my work. I simply googled best current vocalists and thats what it spit out.

:lmao: When this thread popped up the other day, I started reading from post 1 and didn't realize it was from 2024. Post 1 and 2 are about Trevor Noah and Miley Cyrus. Noah hosting again and Cyrus in the audience. Post 4 is where I got confused then realized it was a bump to add this year's later in the thread.

“'I just feel very full and very honored,' she (Beyoncé) added."

And as one fellow full-yet-slightly-dishonorable person to another, Bey, might I say you looked every bit the part of being full while you were wearing that dress.

Me-ow.
