For as much as I bash modern musicians as, well, not really musicians, Janelle Monae's performance last night was notable. Not only can she sing, but she channeled Michael Jackson for a good two-minute tribute that was spot-on. Really impressive and fun.

That was outstanding. I thought Raye was also terrific and I didn't know who that was before last night. I live in a musical cave so I enjoyed learning about new (to me) artists.

Honestly I enjoyed whoever the rapper was that was nominated for best new artist. Her songs gave off 90s rap vibes, at different times she sounded like Da Brat, Missy, or MC Lyte. The performance was a little bonkers but the music was legit.

Interesting to see Khruangbin nominated for best new artist when their first record was released in 2015 and I know they played a show at a mid-sized popular venue in my town about 5-6 years ago.
I thought the same about Sabrina Carpenter.
So people still watch the Grammys?
Kid is a big fan of Chappell Roan, Taylor, Sabrina Carpenter, etc so she was watching.
Wait, Will Smith is allowed back on the award show circuit?
Was it all award shows or just the Oscars?

Some good performances overall. Dragged on of course.

Is rock and roll completely dead? Looking at the Grammy’s performances, I’d say yes. I was much more mesmerized watching the FireAid show that streamed a few days ago. That was unreal

I didn't see the show last night but I did notice that the winner for "Best Rock Performance" - in 2025 - was a Beatles recording, and the winner for "Best Rock Album" was a Rolling Stones record, so that's not a great sign.

Has the Grammys ever recognized Rock n Roll?

Jethro Tull emphatically says "YES!"

They are about as much rock as Beyonce is country

(and I was hoping for a tull reference.)

I had to Google it....Beyonce won country album, and album of the year with Cowboy Carter. I hope the rest of the songs are better than Texas Hold em! I admit thats the only one I've heard, but as far as a country song, it's pretty lame, imo.

Justice was not served to All that night........the shortest straw was pulled for the other ONE.

Counter point: That Rolling Stones' album was really hecking good. "Hackney Diamonds"....even has a song with Lady Gaga on it and it slaps in all the right places.

But yeah, the Grammys aren't for rock n' roll stars, guys. Hasn't been for years and years.

I like the album. Quite a bit; more than most it seems. But it's not country in a traditional sense. The song "Alligator Tears" has a touch of country twang to it - great song, IMO. "Bodyguard" is my favorite song off the album but I don't think it's country at all.

IMO, Kacey Musgraves' was more deserving for Country Album, but I'm just a bigger fan of hers overall.

I'm not a pop music guy. That said, I don't really have an issue with all the crossover between pop, and country. It's seems natural, and has been happening for some time.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but it almost seems like Beyonce is getting some kind of legacy nod for this album. I say that after only hearing one song from the album, and seeing what the Internet is saying about previous "snubs" for her.....so she released a mediocre country crossover and gets a "makeup call.".....sound about right?

Sure, I think that's the sentiment of a lot of people; the people who are the loudest today are the ones who are most bothered by it. I don't really follow the Grammy awards closely - I watched last night because my daughter wanted to and she almost never leaves her room, so I was fully on board watching it with her.

Did Beyonce clean up last night because folks feel like she was cheated in the past? Maybe. It's not like she hasn't put out great music in the past. But then again, you could say the same thing about Martin Scorsese winning an Oscar late in life - it was a make-up award. Was the online outrage the same back then?

Regardless, I obviously liked Cowboy Carter more than some, so I was happy she won for Album of the Year. She's a very good musician and I love her voice. I'm certainly not alone with that thought.

Does that even matter? IF you really like it....that's all that matters.

When it comes to music, art whatever......beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For example I think she is craptastic. And I am not alone in that thought.....lol.

Well, yeah, I think it matters. At least a little. I have plenty of artists I enjoy that many others might find craptastic, to borrow your word.

But I'm rather pleased to know I'm in good company with Cowboy Carter because the entire album is terrific. And it was deemed as such before winning her awards last night.

Music is subjective, sure, but - take a look at this - Critical Reception for Cowboy Carter:

Rolling Stone - 5 stars out of 5
Pitchfork - 8.4/10
Metacritic - 91/100

Here, you're a financial guy. This from the Financial Times:

The Financial Times's Ludovic Hunter-Tilney compared the album to a blockbuster historical epic, with its "impressive, very American aura of importance" and "the sense that history is not only being told but also made"

I'm not trying to change your mind here; you like what you like and so do I. But the album was highly praised and well received long before the Grammy awards. And every so often, I like my music to be aligned with the folks who review it for a living.

I have zero doubt it is a high quality first class production. I am just not a fan of her music.

But I am sure it's quality.

That's fair.

Is rock and roll completely dead? Looking at the Grammy’s performances, I’d say yes. I was much more mesmerized watching the FireAid show that streamed a few days ago. That was unreal
I stopped watching the Grammys 20 years ago.
I don't think the Grammys are for guys like us.

But they can be! You just have to let your guard down a little. I used to sneer and contort my face like I was eating a bad vegetable at the mere thought of watching the Grammys.

Now, I've softened up a little and decided to give them a try. Some really really really good music being made by people decades younger than us. Be a shame to miss it because of *reasons* or sheer stubbornness.

Some of these kids are making incredible music.

The kids I listen to making music these days are found on XM radio on channels like Octane.

I do like some great R&B and the like as well…..I just don’t like all the BS on the Grammys.

I also see tons of great young bands in local rock clubs etc.

I am a musician in my soul. So I appreciate great music.

The Grammys feel contrived these days….and have for the last decade or so. Just not my cup of tea.

The fire aid concert….yeah that’s more my speed.

Felt that way for decades but with a daughter who wants next to nothing to do with me, I'm desperate for common ground and this was it.

I didn't like everything about the show and it dragged on WAY too long. But I walked away with a handful of new songs to my exclusive Spotify Playlist.

I said earlier that I live in a musical cave so finding new songs, artists, material is a challenge. In one evening, I was able to gain exposure to a whole new set of artists and songs that I wouldn't know about otherwise.

Great to see Sierra Ferrell cleaning up the Americana category with 4 Grammys from 4 nominations for Trail of Flowers - well deserved.

Billy Strings deservedly back with another Bluegrass win for his live record, which is his second best bluegrass album award after Home a few years ago. He broke a 2 year run by Molly Tuttle. If it were up to me, he'd have won last year with the record he did with his dad but no complaints as it could have gone to one of many each of these past few years.

I don’t find myself actively seeking out the genre, but whenever I hear good folk/bluegrass stuff I always really enjoy it. Thanks for bringing these to my attention, listening to them today has put a smile on my face.
