Duce cut loose: Steelers release Staley; make other roster moves
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers released 10-year veteran running back Duce Staley on Monday.
Staley was amid his third year season with Pittsburgh but had failed to be active since the first game of the season. He played in 16 games, 11 of which were starts, in two-plus seasons with the Steelers, rushing for 978 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 230 carries plus catching 12 passes for 89 yards.
In his career, Staley has rushed for 5,785 yards with 24 touchdowns on 1,430 attempts. He has posted 287 receptions for 2,587 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career, which began after originally being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round (71st overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft.
The Steelers also announced that rookie wide receiver Willie Reid has been placed on the injured list and will miss the rest of the season. He injured his foot on October 8th at San Diego in his only game played this season, returning a kickoff for 19 yards and a punt for 11.
Additionally, the club filled open roster spots by signing cornerback Chidi Iwuoma and wide receiver Lee Mays.
Iwuoma was originally signed as a free agent in 2002 but was released prior to this season's opener. He notched 69 special teams' tackles in four seasons after starting his career with Detroit in 2001.
Mays has 11 catches for 154 yards and 36 kickoff returns for 750 yards during his career with Pittsburgh. Originally drafted in the sixth round (202nd overall) of the 2002 Draft, he spent training camp with the squad in 2006 before getting released.
