Holy Hell!
The church in Assisi destroyed by an earthquake in the late 1990's is the first that comes to mind.I am hard pressed to think of a bigger tragedy from an historical perspective.
Not a lot of them since Alexandria, for sure.I am hard pressed to think of a bigger tragedy from an historical perspective.
Yeah, I am sure they will. I am sure each window is document with millions of pictures. Shoot, I even got some.I wonder if they’ll look at pictures of the stained glass and recreate it
There is a picture of the vault on CBS at the moment. Parts of it seem to be there. It appears that while the outer roof was lost, the interior stone roof may have fully held even as 750 tons of spire landed on it. Which may have nearly completely saved much of the interior from not only fire but also lead contamination. That would be pretty amazing.
Started in the steeple which was under renovation. Would be a pretty neat trick to get up there.Given that this is Holy Week, I have a bad feeling this was a deliberate fire by someone with an axe to grind
Was that under scaffolding? I was at work so I wasn't locked into coverage, it didn't seem to be. Is there any thought to a cause, did it burn from the inside out?Started in the steeple which was under renovation. Would be a pretty neat trick to get up there.
They spent 100 years building these things, these were some damn craftsmenI’m pretty confused. The pics made it seem like a raging inferno. Perhaps as HF said, the stone roof somehow held. Unreal
I have a new appreciation for Pillars of the EarthThey spent 100 years building these things, these were some damn craftsmen
I think those might be light fixtures, rather than actual candles. Real candles would likely be used only during services and for votive offerings.I kind of can't believe that in the picture of the altar, the candles didn't melt? Did it really not get that hot inside??
from a post above, this linkI kind of can't believe that in the picture of the altar, the candles didn't melt? Did it really not get that hot inside??
They better not. If we're gonna start recreating ancient monuments, the Library of Alexandria needs to come first.I wonder if they’ll look at pictures of the stained glass and recreate it
If we knew what was inside it, we wouldn't need to recreate it.They better not. If we're gonna start recreating ancient monuments, the Library of Alexandria needs to come first.
It's called the internetThey better not. If we're gonna start recreating ancient monuments, the Library of Alexandria needs to come first.
A huge volume of irreplaceable ancient manuscripts, history and knowledge was lost in the library fire. On the other hand, the Internet has porn.culdeus said:It's called the internet
Agreed. I'm shocked, but pleased (relative to what I was expecting). The pictures above are beyond what I could have hoped.
I’m the least religious person but that is in an incredible image.Billy Bats said:

I might have to become a little moreso after that. Wow.I’m the least religious person but that is in an incredible image.
Where are you seeing this? None of the images ive seen would suggest a major water incursion.I'm pretty sure the building does not have a watertight seal. Also, the crypts below are now an indoor swimming pool.
It's obviously a terrible loss. But if the art/relics were saved and the fire was limited to the roof structure it doesn't seem as bad as it appeared to be last night.
This was reported very early on (saw it on a network talk show in a hospital waiting room). I'm not sure what put the issue in doubt afterwards.I read that one of the benefits to the fact that it was under renovation is that most of the decorations of the roof and spires were already removed.
Turns out the flying buttress is good for more than making middle school kids giggle. If this thread is right in its reporting, that's about the absolute best news one could hope for. Hoping for it to be true.
Middle school?Turns out the flying buttress is good for more than making middle school kids giggle.
One of the Networks started running a list of artworks and artifacts that are located there and it snowballed. This was reported very early on (saw it on a network talk show in a hospital waiting room). I'm not sure what put the issue in doubt afterwards.
One of the posts under it says...."I mean, you can have a protocol, a plan of battle, as any paramilitary organization (incl. fire brigades) must have, but you still need to act on the plan. Actions require people. Paris has a priest firefighter that ran into a burning cathedral to save Jesus's crown of thorns!!"
Wasn't that the finishing move of Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka?Turns out the flying buttress is good for more than making middle school kids giggle.
Vive Pere Fournier. One of the posts under it says...."I mean, you can have a protocol, a plan of battle, as any paramilitary organization (incl. fire brigades) must have, but you still need to act on the plan. In 3 days.it seems fitting that during holy week one of the most sacred christian shrines has burned and no one is speaking of tearing it down but instead only of how it will be rebuilt in a better fashion
