NYC assassination news thread - Please no politics (1 Viewer)

I wonder how much NYPD resources are being used to track/find/apprehend this guy.

It's obviously high profile - so the spotlight is on the department. But, at the same time, there is no indication that the public at large are in danger with this guy running loose. So, how does this compare to the average murder in NYC - which if my google search is correct there have been ~350 this year.

(In fairness - just based on the reporting, there seems to be a lot of evidence to work with here, while the average murder might have almost nothing to go on - video, Face ID, prints, etc.)

- Multiple health insurance companies taking precautions to protect employees --- making live meetings virtual instead, having employees work from home instead of in the office, taking down pictures and names of employees from company websites, hiring more security.
This seems a little much imo.

Feel like an NYC corn hole is needed, where we can come together and solve this mystery.
get a stoner van and talking dog and i’m in!
The Mystery Machine is parked across the street from my pad .. no joke.
You live in an abandoned old amusement park?

:oldunsure:

Maybe.

It's parked in a lot across the street from me.
I'm going to guess you're in LA, maybe near Santa Monica.

There was a security detail assigned to Thompson during his trip to New York, but security wasn’t with him when he was fatally shot Wednesday, CNN reported Thursday, according to a source they said was familiar with the company’s security. It wasn’t known why.

So a little perspective - We put on an investor day last year, which is what UnitedHealthcare was doing when he was shot. For us, our event was at the NYSE. Our entire executive team was there. We stayed at a hotel a few blocks away. Zero security beyond what NYSE has on site. Some folks walked to the conference, some took a car. Recently, there have been more protests and such at conferences we've attended, so we have started seeing a guy from our security team at some of them. The guy is not someone any of our executives knew in advance. They'd have no way of contacting him in an emergency. They didn't know he was going to be there. So...long story short, outside of international travel, I think typically domestic executive "security" is a very loosely used term. I honestly doubt many companies have an armed guard escorting their CEO everywhere they go in NYC or any other major US city.

While I think some of the precautions are a bit much, I will say we had some social media backlash in the last few months, and just a few weeks ago, I was made aware that my name, along with 3 other employees, were posted on a group as people to basically "spam" with hate mail. I received two e-mails before our IT department put in filters to block them. It was a little unnerving to know someone had my name and info and associated me with a call to action. Admittedly, I don't work for a company with a huge reputation issue or anything like that, and we've never had any issues previously - but to be fair, I doubt this guy knew his life was in jeopardy either.

Police have compiled 200+ images of the suspect spanning his arrival in NYC through his escape route.

Sorry. Its not a great time to joke.. and especially about your specific situation described above- that's truly terrible.

That doesn't sound like a gun most people just have laying around. I feel like it's scarce enough that just figuring out how this guy might have gotten one could really reduce the suspect pool.

just an observation most people i hear talking about this in my life say murder is bad and they feel bad for his kids but no one and i mean no one is defending the insurance industry and everyone is saying they totally understand why someone would want to take this guys life and that is pretty scary to me to be honest take that to the bank brohans

I think when people say they can "understand" the motive, I don't think they are saying it's justified.

If an insurance company denies a procedure (for the sake of increasing its profits) and that in essence kills your mother, wife, son, aunt...., you may be sent into a rage and want to harm someone that you think is responsible. Obviously, a rational mind should prevail and one should find another outlet for dealing with the grief and seeking other more acceptable methods to get some revenge/satisfaction like going to the news media or bringing a lawsuit.
i think that for a not small group of people they have lost so much faith in corporations ever being called to account that this may be what they now view as the only way to get justice and lets be honest if this guy did direct to use an algorythm that wrongly denied claims and he knew it was doing that and people died as a result would he ever actually face jail time probably not instead unitedhealthcare would just pay a big fine that would still be less that what it saved wrongly denying claims what i am getting at is that i think for some they view the situation as hopeless and without account and they might be right take that to the bank brohans

seems like having dozens of pictures of his face should do the trick

I think the gun is distinct enough, NYPD were able to track down a store in CT about it. I saw that reported in the last 24 hours, but not hearing about it now... So who knows.

Nope- no fairytale.
(Yes... I know).

I am impressed with the effort that NYPD is putting into this investigation, but it has me wondering how any homicides in NYC go unsolved these days if they can track someone's pathing around the city via thousands of cameras.
BBC article mentioned some new face recognition software NYPD is using... Not sure if it's been implemented yet or not.

Tracing its roots back to the covert, World War II-era Welrod pistol, as well as the more modernized contract VP9, the all-new Station SIX-9 (Silenced Project caliber 9) harkens back to the famed Bride Hall weapons acquisition section, or SOE Station VI, and later Station IX, where the original concept was conceived.

This updated, integrally suppressed pistol features a new grip and updated magazines, yet maintains its non-descript appearance, whisper-quiet sound signature and unique rotating bolt operation. This model in 9mm wears a 3-in. barrel. It finds its operational success as a magazine-fed, non-auto-ejecting single-shot functioning in a rotational bolt action. It is beautifully enhanced by wipe suppressor, and a baffled suppressor is an available option for those who prefer that design.

I still feel like this guy was a pro and is gone. The fact he arrived 10 days early, had a very good escape route and seemed to not have a care in the world suggests this wasn't his first rodeo. I feel like I'm witnessing a movie almost.
I think we all have watched too many movies. I can’t imagine a “pro” risking the chance of 1000 things that could have gone wrong in broad daylight like this. A pro would snipe him from across the street or shoot him while he was sleeping or when he was in his car late at night.

Probably somewhere in between. Not a Jason Bourne type pro, but he did his homework and is many orders more intelligent than the average criminal.

Agreed, he has firearms familiarity, but a pro would have been point blank with the first shot if a pistol was the chosen method.

The original reporting said the victim was shot in the calf. Is this true? Might be a clue that hints back to motive.

I have no idea about any of this but I stumbled on a twitter thread yesterday where the guy is adamant the gun is not a B&T Station Six.

I'd say more organized, but getting water at a Starbucks and leaving a phone are not intelligent. In retrospect, the Starbucks stop is really off with the rest of the MO, he must really have been thirsty.

A Twitter detective said saying something that made sense to me as a movie watcher - a pro doing a brazen hit like this would walk up and pop him in the head point blank from behind. This guy shot from a short distance away and hit the target twice - once in the torso and once in the calf. Twitter detective was not impressed.

and some people feel like white collar crime and criminals should serve out the same type of punishment as other offenses committed by individuals.

I mean, this was in the "For You" feed which I typically avoid and I don't know this guy and don't follow him so buyer beware. But this story is *serious business* for him.

Or in Minnesota where there are far fewer people and cameras and police.

I would be sending out his photos to every shooting range/gun club in the country
How many guys know how to really handle the weapon he used in this murder? Just asking

The photo in the coffee shop looked like possibly blue eyes and it was a pretty clear shot of the top half of his face
This other photo that is supposed to be the murderer, it looks like it was taken at a hotel/airport/bus terminal, not sure where that popped up but it looks like a different jacket
He might have changed clothes
Did they find the back pack that people say was tossed away?

I'm betting they slow down with information released to the public, if they're lucky they already know the name of the suspect but don't want to let that out just yet
Does this guy not have a mom/dad, brother/sister, ex-gf/bf that might want to let the police know who they are looking for?
You know if you are related to this man and you don't call him in, the authorities are likely to knock on your door before or after they find him

I'm mildly surprised we didn't see his arrest already when the face photos were released
I also wondered if he got out of the country quickly but I think they would have had the airports on major lockdown looking for this guy trying to fly out of NYC for say Europe on the first available flight, maybe too risky.

And maybe he wants to get caught

That gun is basically a remake of a WWII English special operations pistol (Welrod) with a built in silencer. OSS used it as well during war.

From CNN....

Investigators have a “reason to believe” the person of interest in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO has left New York City, according to police commissioner Jessica Tisch.

She told CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz that police released photos of the person not wearing a mask on Thursday because they want a “wider audience to see the picture outside of New York City.”

This is the first interview with top police officials since the shooting happened.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said officers are conducting a “very, very extensive video canvas.” They are reviewing footage from around the Hilton hotel, where the shooting occurred, to uptown Manhattan.

He said the suspected gunman rode on a bike from the shooting scene to Central Park. The person then exited the park around 77th Street, still with the bike, Kenny said. Footage later shows him walking at 86th Street and Columbus Avenue, according to Kenny, before he gets in a cab that takes him to a Port Authority bus center near 178th Street and Broadway.

“Those buses are interstate buses. That’s why we believe he may have left New York City,” he said, adding that police are working to figure out which bus the person may have gotten on.

“We have video of him entering the Port Authority Bus Terminal. We don’t have any video of him exiting so we believe he may have gotten on a bus,” he later added.

The words etched into the bullet casings is a pretty emotional thing to do, and that would be where i see the questions about whether it was a pro or not.
A professional hit man usually doesn't leave any clues but this feels a little personal

I do think there is a decent chance this person is related to someone under the UH system that fell thru the cracks or was denied something and someone decided to go vigilante because maybe they already had some proper training in handling weapons, perhaps ex-military or something.

Could be a combo of several things

I had read they were expanding to NJ and CT but those buses could be going anywhere or much further than those immediate States
They knew this guy was a Greyhound rider the same day of the shooting. We were told he left Atlanta 10 days prior, now did he live in Atlanta prior to this?
Lot of questions but this would seem like he made it out of NYC rather easily

Someone was riding on those buses and saw him, or someone that matches the description

UnitedHealth Group stock down 11% since shooting.

Guess it's not a "growth stock" anymore
I also read that several health insurance companies have removed the faces of their executives from their websites
I guess it feels strange that it was perfectly OK to do until suddenly this happens in NYC and now they all want to run for cover

interesting to me that he took the bike back uptown to the west side and then hopped a cab back downtown to Port Authority...maybe hoping the bikeride would buy him enough time to hop a bus. For that matter, he could have also just hopped onto a subway there, or walked over to the river to take a ferry to NJ. or he had a car nearby. I have to figure if he went into and stayed in Port Authority, they'd be able to track his movement and eventual bus.

See this is the non-pro side, you can pretty easily use the ebike and get from 77th to the PABT on Riverside without much video and arguably just as fast. There are also limited options from that station. Probably just Boston on Greyhound and then all the NJ Transit area stuff.

From your earlier post, seems like he didn't go to Port Authority on 40th and 8th, but some satellite place

before he gets in a cab that takes him to a Port Authority bus center near 178th Street and Broadway.

words were etched on the bullets, and he got a coffee beforehand.

Pretty sure we can rule out a professional assassin.

interesting to me that he took the bike back uptown to the west side and then hopped a cab back downtown to Port Authority...maybe hoping the bikeride would buy him enough time to hop a bus. I didn't even realize there was a PA terminal up there.
at the GW Bridge.

as Sammy says, he could've just taken the bike up there... and over the bridge for that matter.

Strange he's relying on public transportation though.

Way he handled a gun, according to tv experts, implies he's got the minimals. taking a bike to a cab to a bus to escape, not so much.

Why would the authorities come knocking after he is caught?

Because someone who is related to this crazy person should already know it's him
They should be calling the police with at least the name of the person even if they don't know his whereabouts
They're gonna come knock and start probing to see if others helped him plan all this.

The Unabomber's brother turned him in and they never had an actual photo of him to show the public, just a composite sketch which btw, can't they get one of those out with the photos they have and make a clean full face composite to help ID him?
